In This Issue Happy Independence Day - Perfume Bottle Style! Can YOU Guess? IPBA In The Press Sotheby Sells Scent Bottle for a Cool $2.5 million Europa Perfume News from Afonso Special Features: FACES OF IPBA Kovel's Newsletter Upcoming Perfume Bottle Auction Happenings in Europe Regional Chapter News Welcome to New Members Happy Independence Day - Perfume Bottle Style! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ This red, white and blue flask-type perfume bottle reminds me of our summer time rituals in the US of family get-togethers enjoying Bar-B-Q, hotdogs and hamburgers, with grilled corn knocked back with a few cold beers - all in celebration of the 4th of July. Although the colors of red, white and blue may call to mind multiple references, to me these colors represent the patriotic colors of the USA. I shared this bottle with Petr Novy, our Keynote Speaker in Vegas, who hails from the Czech Republic and is a specialist in Czech glass. He was unsure of its age, but suggested that it may not be very old and likely the end-of-theday personal bottle project of a glass blower/worker. He argued that perhaps I see RED when the color is more orange. Maybe. But to me it speaks of the patriotic RWB of July 4th. Perhaps you have a perfume bottle that holds a special place in your collection because it signifies a special holiday or personal day for you. Maybe you decorate with perfume bottles or related vanity items on national, religious or days of celebrated significance to you. I invite you to share those moments with your fellow collectors here. Contact me with your pictures and a few words about the significance, and we will share one each month for the rest of the year. Thank you! Can YOU Guess...... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Perfume bottles shaped like Disney bad-guys? which shape relates to which character? Can you guess Japanese designer Ruby Spark has carefully crafted the bottles so that they resemble the antagonists from films such as The Lion King, Snow White, Robin Hood and Frozen. For the quiz (and most importantly, the answers!) and further info, check out this link HERE. Thank you to Shelley Bechtold - she is always on the look-out for newsy perfume-related info for us! IPBA In The Press ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ READ All ABOUT US! Teri Wirth, IPBA VP, is responsible for PR for our organization. Although often most of our PR comes out in anticipation of our Annual Conventions, we advertise on multiple glass-collecting and antique-collecting websites year round. Herein are samples of just a few articles that ran this spring in antique journals. An article by authors and IPBA members, Marti DeGraf and Toby Mack, was featured in the Journal of Antiques & Collectibles (Vol XVI, No 2, April 2015) issue on "The Allure of Glass" which featured "The Glass Artistry of DeVilbiss". View the complete article HERE. Also in that issue, Teri ran a beautiful and detailed ad on our 2015 convention (HERE). In the March issue of the West Coast Peddler - The Oldest Journal of Antiques & Collectibles in the Pacific States, author and IPBA member Ken Leach's "Commercial Perfume Bottles - Fragile Shells of Forgotten Fragrances" was featured. View the complete article HERE. Thank you to Teri Wirth for a job well done! More featured articles to follow next month. Sotheby Sale of Scent Bottle Surpasses $2.5 million US ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Previously owned by an American Collector since 1958 (it was not you, was it?) "an early gold enamel, pearl and gem-set singing bird automaton" with an elaborate and detailed provenance was sold this past month. The exquisite piece was accompanied with its fitted leather case. Please check out the listing HERE. (I apologize that I could not post a picture as Sotheby's strictly protects their catalogs photos. This is one link not to miss!) Our appreciation to members Rob Girouard and Elizabeth Creech for sharing this auction info. Europa Perfume News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Afonso Oliveira, our new International VP, is visiting multiple venues this summer spreading the word about perfume bottle collecting and IPBA. His first stop was Seville during the 1st weekend of June. The Feria de Antiquedades was in the old stadium, Olimpico de la Cartuja, with more than 50 exhibitors displaying antiques of all genres. Dealers came from all across Spain. He shared our Spanish language version of the MGAM brochures with dealers that exhibited vanity type items. He is hoping that he has planted a seed of interest for the future. He is following up with several Spanish contacts he has made through Facebook. The 2nd weekend in June found Afonso at the Grasse event "Salon des Collections". He traded business cards with multiple like-minded collectors and shared information about IPBA. Check out those bottles! SPECIAL FEATURE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the FACES of the IPBA Meet Helen Pettit and Jan Olson, the best perfume-bottlecollecting-buddy duo I know! These ladies share a personal history of not only collecting perfume bottles together, and attending the convention together, but 40+ years of a close, wonderful, supportive friendship. Helen found an IPBA membership application in a perfume bottle collecting book and decided to attend her first convention in St. Louis. She brought Jan as her guest. Don Orban was her mentor-extraordinaire, contacting her before the event and acting as her guide. Helen and Jan first met through work, they both have had long careers in the medical profession. Although Helen is retired now after 43 years, she works a few days a week at a women's clinic as a First-trimester Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging. Jan has over 20 years of experience as a Medical Technologist in Histology, she was a tissue-cutter (a very specialized skill for those of you with a pathology interest!). Jan now owns and runs an antique mall in Peru, Illinois with her husband. With over 15 years of experience in the field, Jan shared her insight on young collectors - they are going for modern furniture and collectibles from the 50s, 60s and 70s. As to their specific PB interests, Helen's love is minis, she has SIX cases of them in her living room. She also enjoys DeVilbiss and LOVES Art Deco. Jan started collecting marbles and Santa Claus items. Then she acquired a Santa Claus perfume bottle. Well, the Santa Claus collectibles got left behind, and she moved on to perfume bottle collecting specifically! Such a special friendship these two share! Together they have even taken their respective grandkids on antiquing sprees through Europe shopping for bottles. Next time you see them at convention ask them about their latest acquisition. KOVEL'S Newsletter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Antiques-guru Teri Kovel (and her late husband Ralph) has been an IPBA member since 1995 or earlier. Their antiques newsletter has been followed for decades and their antique guides, TV shows and now YouTube features have global followers. The IPBA eNewsletter was featured in their recent June online eNews in a blurb titled "Bottling Memories of the Dearly Departed" - a newsy item from member Shelley Bechtold that we featured last month. Catch Kovel's June news HERE. Yeah Shelley! **This just in from member Joyce Geeser.....the July issue of the Kovels monthly newsletter carried a big full page spread on the Perfume Bottle Auction 2015.
