2008 END OF SEASON REPORTS Como West Jannali Junior Sports Club Inc. www.cwjjsc.org.au Club Phone: 9528 3519 Congratulations to the club, management team and players for another enjoyable and successful season. Wizard Home Loans at Sutherland enjoyed another great year of involvement with the club and its players. We were able to present Player of the Round awards to some 30 lucky winners at the Sunday evening functions. These winners received, as well as a cap, drink bottle and certificate a $50 gift voucher to take to the Good Guys at Caringbah to help buy something. This brings our contribution to the club over 4 years to over $6,000 in gifts and cash. I want to thank everyone at the club for making me feel so welcome at club functions during the year. I enjoyed taking some club members to support the Wizard Blues at the Olympic Stadium for the State of Origin matches. Please keep in mind that sponsorship of any kind is designed to drive more business to the sponsor, and any activity needs to be profitable for that sponsor. My commitment to the club and its members doesn’t end with the end of the winter sports season. I will continue to offer discounts off Wizard’s already highly competitive variable interest rates as well as returning funds to the club, so if you, your family or friends need help with home lending please give me a call on 9521 -8133 or send an email to [email protected] or pop into the office. Until next year, have a great summer. Peter Friend Wizard Home Loans Sutherland 2/854 Old Princes Highway PRESIDENTS REPORT: It is with pleasure that I present my 2008 report. Firstly, I would like to thank our Executive and Management Committee members for all the hard work they have put in to the year. Our year actually starts when we start planning registrations etc, following the presentation picnic, and dinner, so there is not really much of a break. However having said that, I am sure that everyone has enjoyed the year and it is good to see that after our AGM, we have welcomed a number of new members onto our Committee. I would like to thank the sponsors of our Club who have again contributed to our successful year. To Wizard Home Loans, thank you for the weekly and state of origin involvement, along with The Good Guys at Taren Point. Fiori’s Restaurant in Jannali, Rothsay Accounting Services, Ippolio Lawyers, Jannali Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, Hair Artistry at Jannali, Leader Law Services, REBEL, MacDonalds and of course our long time supporters, Jannali Veterinary Clinic, Como Butchers and Alf Bargwanna and Sons. Congratulations to all team Coaches and Managers, particularly those teams who finished up as Premiers. Unfortunately our Netball sides weren’t quite as successful, with only the one team making it to the finals. Still not bad out of just four sides. Details of those team’s reports are available in other parts of this Sideline edition. As far as football is concerned, we were the second highest Club in regard to winning premierships, eight in total. Not too bad, a new record for the Club. I reported last year and the year before, that we were looking at creating an all weather training area to the south of the oval so that we could train rain, hail or shine as well as take a fair bit of load away from the playing surface. It disappoints me to advise that the Council has refused our application, primarily on the grounds of the need to remove some trees and the contribution the extra lighting would have on global warming. Yep, I am serious. Nearly two years work and around $4,000 for nothing. On a brighter note however, Council has given us the approval to “rebuild” Jannali 1, albeit kicking and screaming. We have pledged over $60,000 to do the work, properly this time and that is fully paid for by this Club. Makes you wonder why the Council didn’t fall over backwards trying to offer us support. Hopefully that should make Jannali Oval one of the best in the Shire. We may need to examine how we train early in the season etc. For example, no boots before the competition starts. Next year we have plans for a revised canteen, with a coffee lounge set-up for Saturday mornings and different catering for Sunday nights. All in all our Club is still moving forward, I do not think however that we can handle too many more than the 70 teams we had this year. That is something we will have to look at, although we do have a policy of never turning away players. I suppose this is a good problem, but it is one that we need to be mindful of. Finally, the big news for next year is that we are moving to a new playing strip. The shirts will be issued on a loan basis per team. Whilst the shorts and socks will be given out when you register on our advertised rego dates. You will receive a letter advising the actual dates, however if you keep across our web site you will be able to register sooner and still qualify for the freebies. Cuts out the queuing as well. Next year promises to be another great year and I look forward to the challenges ahead. Thankyou for your support throughout the year, it is only by working together that we can improve. Have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year and we look forward to seeing you all at the first and second Saturdays in February for registration. Bob McArthur SECRETARY’S REPORT: Another very successful year for the club. Registrations this year increased slightly to around 900 filling 73 soccer and 5 netball teams. Soccer participants increased across the Sutherland Shire to over 18,000. With the increase in participants comes increased pressure on our fields, both at Jannali Oval and throughout the Shire. Jannali Oval No. 1 in particular is in need of significant and substantial work. Your Club Committee is examining the various options available to it and recognise that the condition of our fields is one of the most critical issues we need to address. This year also saw an increase in judiciary activity across the Shire. This increased activity was mostly the result of players mouthing off to referees or other players, usually after an initial caution. The SSFA introduced harsher suspensions in these situations and we were pleased to note that our Club had far fewer instances of this behaviour than the majority of other Clubs. Referees are difficult to recruit in the first place and their decisions on the field must be respected. No referee – no game! I’d encourage you to have a go at it one day! Changes to Rooball for 6-9’s were introduced and considered quite successful for our 24 participating Rooball teams. We acknowledge a few changes are possibly needed but the general feedback was very positive. Thank you to the Coaches and Managers and Rooball Coordinators for the positive manner in which the changes were adopted. The feedback we received from visiting parents indicates we’ve generally got the formula right. This year we moved Rooball back from Carol Ave to Jannali Oval. To see the swarms of people on the top oval and the activity around the clubhouse from 8.00 -10.00 am every Saturday morning was fantastic, and created a great atmosphere. This year we increased the number of Rooball Leaders (refs) to cater for the increase in Rooball teams and games. All of our guys have done a fantastic job during the season and many comments were received from parents, both ours and visiting, on how well our guys conducted themselves. A few of our Rooball Leaders have expressed a desire to move on to black & white refereeing and we are very keen to encourage this. An outstanding year in terms of premierships - 8 - a record for our club. Congratulations to the following teams: 10E, 12A, AL12, W14B, W15B, W18B, SWB & SWG. Women’s teams represent about 33% of our teams yet achieved 63% of our premierships this year demonstrating the depth of talent and skills in our female players! Special thanks to Kevin Higgs for coordinating our Rooball leaders during the year. Kevin has put in a huge amount of time and effort marking fields and coordinating games, and has done this and other roles around the club for 17 years I believe. Recognition of his efforts is well and truly warranted. Wizard Home Loans - Sutherland, through Principal Peter Friend, sponsored two Player of the Round awards each round throughout the year, totaling $3,600. Peter’s support is very valued and we hope to see him and Wizard again next season. Many thanks to the parents, grandparents & supporters for your efforts during the year. We have a very social and active club that assists in creating a great sense of community. Let’s keep it strong… Steve Whiteside Secretary SENIOR COACHES REPORT: This year has seen the introduction of the Small sided games format to Rooball with field size, numbers in each team, and smaller goals with no goalkeepers except in the 9’s, being the major changes. The concept is a good one with the idea to ensure skills are taught to the kids and they are encouraged to learn how to play with minimal interference from parents/coaches/referees and no goal and point tallies maintained. Our club has adopted the changes with great enthusiasm as the way forward and congratulations to all the persons that assisted in the coaching and organisation of the kids. Our numbers continue growing in Rooball with 26 teams this year including the under 9’s which have been added to Rooball and non competition this year, with this set to expand next year to include the 10’s. We assisted new Rooball coaches at the beginning of the season with introductory training sessions for the under 6’s which was a great success. Thank you to all the Football Committee members that assisted in these sessions and helped me throughout the year. Along with this a number of our coaches have participated in coaching courses run by the association obtaining accreditation as licensed coaches, which will ensure the teams and the kids they coach in the future will benefit greatly. I am sure they could all tell you of what a difference it makes to their ability to train the kids, and the improvement in their teams’ performance and skill levels. The courses are run by the NSWSFA through SSFA with the qualification recognised by Football Federation Australia (FFA) and successful coaches are registered under the FFA Accreditation Scheme. The following club coaches achieved the accreditation levels as shown this year: Grassroots Football Certificate Nic Fylaktidis Anthony Tesoreiro Jeannette Corner Peter Murray Gail Keane James Tyler Mark Porter Steve Hobden Ric Chapman Brian Malone Junior Licence Coaching Course Manny Loutas Jeff Stewart Youth Licence Coaching Course Dragan Blazevic Jaz Atic Dennis Jones Melissa Smith Mick Savage Michael Beames Ron Turral Tim Graham Danielle Helps Greg Power This has placed the club in a strong position with the above joining our previously accredited coaches so that over 60% of our junior coaches are now licensed and accredited to coach our teams. Anyone wishing to participate in a coaching course please contact me to discuss as there will be courses run in the off season. I am aware that a number of our coaches will be attending courses being run on the day of our presentation, such is their commitment to the kids and teams of this great club. All of this can only benefit our club, and our results this year may be a reflection on this commitment to learning and progressing, with our competition teams performing very well. Of our 45 competition teams, 28 participated in the finals series this year or over 60% of our teams. We had 16 teams progressing through to the Grand Final. Statistically that means 1 in every 3 of our teams made the biggest game of the season so how good is that!. The only club to beat us with more teams in the grand finals has over twice the number of teams than us. The end result was a club record of 8 Premiers from those games and congratulations to those teams and players. The teams and how far they progressed through the finals series is listed as follows: 6 Minor Premiers: 12A, 15B, 35G, W14B, W30A1, WSG 9 Semi Finalists: 10B, 11C, 13B, 21B1, 45B, AL1, AL6, W18C, WSD 3 Finalists: 21A, W12A, W30A2 16 Grand Finalists: 10E, 11A, 12A, 13A, 15B, 21B2, W13A, W14B, W15B, W16A , W18B, WSB, W30A1, WSG, AL12, 35G. 8 Premiers: 10E, 12A, W14B, W15B, W18B, WSB, WSG, AL12 Finally thanks to every coach this year as without your enthusiasm and the sacrifice of your time the club would struggle. Thanks also to all the parents and supporters that showed up to the end of season finals series, your cheering and sportsmanship was a credit to the club and inspired the players. Chris Martin CLUB HISTORIAN REPORT: HISTORY FACT SHEET NO 23, 2008 PLAYING FIELDS The main topic of conversation during this season undoubtedly centred on the condition of the playing fields used by the 17,554 players registered with the 26 clubs in the Sutherland Shire Football Association Competition. I thought particularly about our field – Jannali Oval – and recalled its beginning, and the many challenges which would have faced this club or any club when formed; especially acquisition of a playing area. When Como West Soccer Club was formed in 1956 solving the problem of a training area was a priority. An approach was made to Como West School for use of the school playground. Permission was granted but a big clean-up was necessary as the ground was “all gravel”. The Flats (Scylla Bay) was also used. (Games were also played on Scylla Bay 1956 and 1957. Some games were also played at Tonkin Oval, Cronulla). In March 1958 the Secretary of Como West Soccer Club applied for the ground at Jannali Oval as home ground and it was later confirmed that application had been granted by Sutherland Shire Council. During June 1958, Mr Farr-Wharton reported on a meeting to discuss Scylla Bay ground. “Council’s idea is to fill the reserve with 2 ft of sand which will be dredged out of the River and after being allowed to settle, topped with soil. Also attention to bank levies, drains etc.” The electricity transmission at Jannali Oval was a matter of concern in 1958. Sutherland Council was contacted regarding the possibility of having a guard installed around the tower. Council advised the Electricity Commission promised to install suitable guards on the tower. Weekend games were thrown into turmoil when in 1960 players were advised Council had started to put soil on Jannali Oval with the view to then grading it. Games were hastily transferred to Sylvania Heights, Sylvania Oval and Gymea Oval. The first “seeding” of the Oval is recorded in 1961, and again in 1964. There was also a working party organised to plant runners in the bare patches at the ends and side of the field (No. 1). Hand planting of runners on the new field was undertaken by several club members the following year, a most “tedious and backbreaking undertaking”. A second smaller field was opened at Jannali Oval in March 1961. This extra field “will assist us in other ways during the season, mainly as a warming- up area on competition days and as an extra practice field on Sunday mornings”. Sticks and stones (parents referred to them as rocks) were removed and holes filled. It was soon considered the new field was mostly a better surface than the big field and amply big enough on which to play competition matches for the younger age groups. (No 2 field is still considered by many players to be the better field for all age groups). The Club was having difficulty in receiving sufficient help to erect rope each weekend as a crowd control. In 1959 representations were made to Council and the Department of Education to have a fence erected at Jannali Oval. It was not until the beginning of 1967 that a fence was erected across the top field at a cost of approximately $350 to our club. The Sutherland Cricket Association donated $40 towards the cost and assisted in the siting of the same. As had been the practice of earlier years, the annual application was made to Sutherland Council for continued use of Jannali Oval as home ground. In March 1968 joint administration of permanent tenure was granted with the Cricket Club and Como West Soccer Club, with (then) Councillor Skinner another member of the Committee. Back in 1971 the Council advised they would allocate $1000 which the Club requested be used to tar-seal the car park area and turf the “basketball” area, situated north of the (current) complex. This was later referred to as the netball area. The car park area was eventually sealed with the completion of stage 2, (the Hall, Napier, Pinkerton Clubhouse) in 1983. Between 1967 and 1979 extensive ground work was again carried out by club members. In 1985, the goal mouth areas were fully re-turfed at a cost of $1300 from club funds. Thanks to the drive, commitment and energy of club committee members, there has been a continuation of maintenance programs carried out. Club funds continue to be committed annually. Each year an average $2500 has been spent on field repairs, the exception being 2007 when over $8000 was allocated and spent. Como West – Jannali is the 5th largest of 26 clubs registered with the S.S.F.A, and no doubt provision will be included in projected spending budgets to ensure the requirements of our players (this year 847) are met. N.B. Information for this article has been extracted from official Minutes of Meetings 1956 – 2008. Each year, players are recognised for the years of playing service to CWJ. The following are recipients for 2008. Special acknowledgement is made of 40 years playing service by David Eccles, (35E team). The longest serving player in our club! You all played the game with passion and determination, but most of all you showed us how the spirit of the game should be played. Your manners on and off the field were second to none. We started training in early March, which brought all the boys back for their 2nd year, and didn't they do well. It was so good to see the friendship the boys have formed together. "Alex" You are the smallest person in the side but the hardest person to get the ball off. You regularly dribble the ball though the opposition sides, which produced some great goals. You have great vision for the game, you had an almighty season. "Harrison" You have come along way from the start of the season. Its great to see that you want to be involved in everything. You have ended the season on a high with some great tackling and some solid displays. Well done. "Henri" You regularly turned defence into attack with some strong runs. That big left foot of yours always produced some great passing of the ball. You were always keen and energetic throughout the season. Sometimes it can be hard being the coaches son, but you handled it well. "Sam" You have been a great boy to coach as have all the boys. Its so good to see you love your soccer. You always give 100% at training. Your ability with the ball has improved as the season has progressed. I think with your attitiude and determination you will be a great player. "Mathew" I was a little worried, but then in Rnd 9 V Gray Point it all came together. With a great run from half way, which produced your 1st goal in a Como shirt, much to the relief of everyone, especially Mum and Dad. It was so good to see your confidence grow as the season went on. "Sean" You played with bustling commitment to win the ball and produced some great tackles. When Sean had his head down I can't remember many opposition players being able to get past Sean. He always showed great sportsmanship as did all the boys. Well done! "Sharyn" Once again you have been a fantastic manager. You have been my rock once again this year. Thanks for all your ongoing help and support to make this a very special team. "To all the parents" Thankyou for all your kind words to Sharyn and myself and for all your help with the BBQ duties. To Sandy a "BIG" sorry for giving you 3rd degree burns whilst we were on BBQ duties together. Boys on behalf of Sharyn and myself we are so proud of every single one of you boys. Well done and keep practising. 6 K2 Coach: Peter Munro Manager: George Piggins Congratulations to all our players for a really good season of soccer. They all had a lot of fun and each and every player has shown improvement in their soccer skills thanks to the coach’s effort. Thankyou See you next year. 6 K3 Coach: Greg Power Manager: Amanda Perryman What a season! No keepers, throw-ins and only 4-a-side with the poor old coach stuck on the sidelines! You all made a tremendous effort in the first year of SSG. Callum was on fire from the start and dominated the season. I was particularly impressed with his left foot and passing game. Cousin Cameron was also a handful for the opposition and his joy when scoring a goal was a pleasure to watch. Josh was busy all year and who could forget his two goals against the Kangaroos, he was on fire that day! Bailey, although small in stature, was one the toughest and gutsiest players in the comp. With more slides than Wet'n'Wild, he stopped many an attacking raid. He knew how to find his way to the goal as well. Caitlin, the soccer princess, had fun and scored a remarkable goal against the Possums, dribbling for half the field, to the delight of a delirious coach! Hayley was probably the most improved in the team, getting much more involved towards the end of the season. Thanks guys and girls, I had fun and I hope you had fun too. Thanks to manager Amanda for her help during the year, sorting everyone out with her weekly emails. Thanks to the parents and grandparents (I don't think Bailey's missed a game all year) for your support! Go the Mighty Mo's! 6 M1 Coach: Mark Porter Manager Annette Bell 6 M2 Coach: Nick Fylaktidis Manager: Jeanette Fylaktidis 6O Coach: James Tyler Manager: Donna Lohmeyer 6 P1 Coach: Ron Turrall Manager: Megan Noyeaux Firstly I would like to thank Manager Megan for doing all that manager stuff throughout the season, did a great job seeing that everything ran smoothly including those ground control days. A big thank you to my brother David who did a fantastic job as assistant coach, it really helps having two trainers on training days. To all the parents, thanks for regularly showing up at training and for all that shouting at the games. Finally a huge thank you to all our players, what a great bunch of kids. This year they learnt basic soccer skills including simple ball control, dribbling and turning the ball, instep kicks, attack, defence and shooting for goal. They also learnt respect for the game, respect for the opposition, respect for their equipment, respect for officials and respect for each other. I can very happily say that each and every player passed with flying colours. It was real fun and a real pleasure to coach them. How did we go on the field ? Who knows, I think we scored just about as many goals as we let in but who’s counting. The main thing is that they learned some basic football skills and had heaps of fun doing it. Every player scored more than one goal so that says a lot for the Small Sided Game. To the players – In reverse alphabetical order. Well the coach does get a bit of licence in writing his report. Julia Turrall : Oh ! did I mention that Julia is my daughter? A great little player with her dribbling and turning skills, chip off the old block ? I doubt it, she’ a champion, scored 5 goals in the season. Dad only scored 1. Jacob Sweetland : Now here’s a real chip off the old block! What a striker ! Nice strong kicking game. Always there in defence to thwart those many invaders of our goalmouth. Monique Noyeaux : The left footed striker. She pulled off some great breakaway runs this year and stopped many opposition attacks with her defensive skills. See Monique, I told you your right foot was not there just to stop you falling over. Nicole Mori : The South American connection. Brings that touch of class from that part of the soccer playing world with some great running, turning and goal scoring, not to mention her defensive skills. Kyefer Jones : A tenacious little player . Don’t get in his way when he gets the ball, he’s going for goal. Kyefer also has a great sense of defensive play, when under attack, knows just where to put himself in a covering position. Hayden Edwards : Hayden by far scored most of our goals this year and has deserved special mention for this. A strong player who, when he wins the ball, only has eyes for goal. Certainly a player of the future. As a coach I am usually against nominating a player of the year because the game is a team game and usually every player has given her / his best throughout the year contributing to the team’s final result. This year I have made an exception to my rule because it is the team’s first year of playing soccer and I would like to give an encouragement award. I nominate Hayden Edwards for his application of the skills he has learnt, his punctuality and general enthusiasm toward learning how to play the game. I am sure the whole team would agree with the decision. Coach: Ron Turrall. 6 P2 Coach: Tim Graham Manager: Anne Keir 6 P3 Coach: Leigh Nelson Manager: Jarrod Simpson 7R Coach: Andy Burton Manager: Ian Wright 7 S1 Coach: Danielle Helps Manager: Marie Greer 7 S2 Coach: Peter Murray Manager: James White 7W Coach: Steve Hobden Manager: Graham Pinney 7Y Coach: Andrew Zywitz Manager: 8R Coach: Jenny Perkins Manager: David Pollack Its hard to believe that this season is over already. It seems only a few weeks ago that we lined up for the first game of the season. This year's 8 Red's were made up of 5 players that played together last year (Ethan, Amy, Samuel, Shaun and Jordan) plus Vinnie and Aidan. The team didn't take long to gel together and the pleasing thing is that they improved individually and as a team as the season progressed. Ethan displayed his ball skills from the very first week and often left the opposition players floundering as he dribbled around them on countless occasions. He also scored many goals throughout the season. Amy had a serious illness earlier in the season and was sorely missed and we were all very glad when she returned. Her skills have improved from last year and judging by the constant smile on her face, she obviously enjoys her soccer. Well done, Amy. Samuel was one player who put his body on the line every week. There wasn't a game go by where he didn't put himself between the ball and the goalmouth to stop a shot. He also has one of the strongest boots in the team. Shaun was a bit of a surprise packet, when you least expected it he would come up with a miraculous save or a huge kick to get the team back on the front foot. He also played a vital role as sweeper most weeks. Jordan was full of energy every week and never stopped running in defence or attack. His booming goal kicks were a plus and he scored quite a few goals, both from long distance as well as close range. Vinnie was great example of the improvement shown throughout the season. Towards the back end of the season he knew exactly where he needed to be and often stopped opposition players in their tracks with his defence. He was also very unlucky not to kick a few goals as he always put himself in position to score. After a slow start to the season, Aidan turned out to be one of our most consistent performers. His defence was uncompromising and his improving attack resulted in a couple of goals throughout the season. Many thanks to Jenny who did a fantastic job as coach. Also many thanks to all the parents, grandparents, families, and friends etc who supported the team each week and helped out with washing the shirts, ground control and canteen duties. Most of all, thanks to all the kids in the team who had fun each week and made the season very enjoyable. 8 S1 Coach: Renato Nosatti Manager: Sandy Noakes Another great season for the boys. 8S1 really embraced the art and science of the SSG. Commitment, effort, sportsmanship, team work and skill development were all thrown in the mix and the boys took up the challenge with outstanding results. Throughout the season we saw some great individual play but mostly we saw carefully thought out, well constructed and disciplined soccer where the boys put to the test their passing skills, ball control and positional play. Well done! A special thank you to all the parents for their support and to Sandy for making sure that everything ran smoothly. 8 S2 Coach: Chris Jolly Manager: Julia Baker This season was another great year for the boys of 8S2. We had Zac join us from another team, and Liam come over from Aussie Rules to try his hand at Soccer. In 2008 these boys showed that they’re not just another team on the roster. Of the 14 games they played they had 8 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw, proving that they’ve got the skills and determination to make a go of the competition. These boys just love the game, they’re a great mix of kids, they love the attack, the defence and the sportsmanship of the game. These boys play week after week, even if they’re sick or injured, and hate it when the game’s cancelled due to rain. To them there’s nothing better than running around the pitch with their mates, kicking the ball at the net. If they win, great! But it’s the game they love. This year they were coached by a dad who’s never played soccer, but he happily gave up his time every week to make sure the boys got a run and his enthusiasm along with there’s has mad it a pleasure to be part of. A very big thankyou to Chris Jolly for taking on the job. The parents appreciate it. These boys will be back again in 2009 so watch out as they’ll only get better, faster and stronger. We can’t wait to see what you can do. Harrison Almond – Harrison’s a great allround player. He can and will give any position a go. He’s a strong defender and an excellent goal scorer. Harrison scored 17 goals this year. He’s a great player and an asset to any team, but you can’t have him because he’s ours. See you next year Harrison. Jakob Atic – Jakob has developed into a fabulous defender this year. His confidence has gone way up and he’s turned into a goal stopping machine. You not only keep the other team at bay with those saves, you also help make the whole team look good. Way to go Jakob. Guy Baker – Guy’s got a strong and mostly accurate boot and he loves to use it!! You don’t want to be in the way when he’s focused on the game. Guy lives for soccer and you can see it in the way he plays, in defence and mid field. This year Guy scored 9 goals for the team and loves a good game. Jak Graham – Jak’s our pocket rocket player, he has endless energy and is super versatile. Jak’s great in defence, as he can read the play and is trouble for the other team in attack. Jak scored 5 goals this year for the team. Well done Jak. The force is strong in this one. We’ll see you next season Jak. Liam Jolly – Liam’s our new guy to soccer this year. He has shown a willingness to learn and a passion for the game. Liam is strong in mid field giving great support to the whole team. Liam scored 5 goals this year, a super effort. You’ve had a great season Liam, you’re our Rookie of the year! Zachary Middleton – Zac’s a great forward with a lethal left foot. He’s our highest goal scorer with 19 goals to his name this year. Zac came from another team to us this year and he’s fitted straight in. He’s one of the boys, he loves soccer and he’s our super striker. Way to go Zac, see you next year. Sean Noyeaux – one of our smallest players, but size has nothing to do with commitment and heart. Sean’s all about teamwork, he’s a great mid fielder, feeding the ball up the line and watching for opportunities. Sean scored 3 goals this year. You chase that play station control Sean, see you in 09. 8W Coach: Dennis Jones Manager: 8 Y1 Coach: Judy Dawes Manager: Kathy Roser 8 Y2 Coach: Ric Chapman Manager: Sherryl Crowley Well what a spectacular season. This was a group of kids thrown together because all the other sides had full compliments. A raggedy bunch of little triers who showed up to play with limited ability, no experience, but hearts as big as themselves. We trained hard every Tuesday night and we worked on skills. We built a little unit of friendship and we shared time equally on the paddock and the spoils. And in the end, this bunch of beautiful babies won more games than they lost. We even won one of our games 21 to nil which gave them the self confidence to play hard and with great delight all year round. By mid year they were not bunching together chasing after that elusive ball with every one of them striking their skinny legs out hoping to connect. Instead it was replaced by people actively going to goal, calling for passes, looking for yellow shirts and making space for themselves. It was such a joy to watch them progress as little people and players. The twins, our only girls in the team Briget and Ellen, not only held their own all year, but improved their skill sets remarkably. Bridgy, for example, could not even kick a ball when she first came to play, but by year's end was shooting for goal. To see her growth as a player and to watch her shyness peel away as confidence gathered, brought tears to your eyes. Sister Ellen did score a couple of goals during the season and her toughness and competitiveness will see her go on to bigger and better things. Both girls were regulars at training and seemed to really enjoy themselves all year. Liam is a tough, rugged boy who charged into the fray from moment one. Whenever he saw a ball, he attacked it like an axeman would a tree in a forest. He had no concept of player preservation or the need to pass to team mates when he started, but by year's end, he too knew the value of getting ball to a man in space. He scored a few goals and they were just reward for his efforts. Kevin is one of those happy little souls who smiles whether he is chasing a ball, kicking a ball, missing a ball who being smashed in a tackle. He scored a few goals, some at vital times in matches, and his defence was always solid. He has the capacity to just improve and improve and improve once the penny drops about how best to get foot on ball. Jeremy did not play as many games as we would have hoped because he is tireless and has natural ability that will bubble to the surface as he gets more experience and grows older. He is fast, is exceptionally keen and scored a few goals simply by seeing the need to be in a certain spot. He is a good team man and works very well with other players and the coach, never causing any problems on any level. Dylan too has loads of talent. He can score goals, he is one of those rare people who can actually finish off moves really well and he potted 8 goals in that game we won 21 to nil showing his raw talents. he was another who missed a few games and training sessions which impeded his growth as a soccer player, but when he showed up the team always played very well. He is tough, fast and very willing. But it was Zac who shone the brightest. He scored nearly 30 goals by year's end and his awareness of where he needs to be on the field at any given time was obvious for all to see. That was the most amazing development in this boy who started playing last year but who was completely run over and had no idea of what to do, where to run, how to kick. He is slight and skinny but his natural talent is there in spades and by year's end, once he learned what the game was about (having fun, chasing hard, finding yellow shirts, getting on with the action, finding space free of rivals) he went to a new place of excellence. He came to every training session, missed just one game during the season, and was an excellent listener to instruction. He won our Player Of The Year Award mainly because of his inexhaustible energy and his amazing improvement as a player. But all up, the team was successful in all those important areas that parents, coaches and managers want them to be. They learned, they had fun, they improved and they got on wonderfully with one another. The parents and spectators who came to the game every week, stood back and enjoyed what they saw as much as the kids enjoyed playing. No coach could have asked for a better bunch of sideline supporters. And if there was an award for Best Manager, then Sherryl would get it. She crossed every tee, dotted every eye, kept everyone totally up to date on week to week happenings and was diligence plus. In the end, it was a shame the season ended because everything about this little lot was simply wonderful for our souls. 9C Coach: Gail Keane Manager: Peter Hunter 9E Coach: Wayne Green Manager: Paul Ippolito 9F Coach: Anthony Tesoreiro Manager: John Collier 9H Coach: John Shearsby Manager: Stuart Mcgrath 9I Coach: Jeannette Corner Manager: Nick Bennett Coach – Brian Malone Manager – Sarah Clay Position: 4th – Semi Finalists P W D L GF GA Pts 17 8 6 3 45 24 30 10 B An up and down season with the boys on top of the table after 8 rounds, a mid season slump and then finishing strong in the last 4 rounds to secure a place in the semi-finals. Lack of numbers and school holidays certainly hit us hard this year and in the end it was a great effort to make the top 4. A very proud coach and parents with the boys achievements this year. The boys efforts and commitment at training throughout the year were excellent and it was a pleasure to be involved with them all. A big thanks to Sarah our Manager for her efforts and to Michael Stilp and Michael Davis for their help throughout the year. The 10B squad LACHLAN BAKER - by far the biggest improver in the team who had an outstanding season in his left back roll. TIM CLAY - our Captain and defensive mid fielder. Tim always gave 100% and got through a lot of work in the mid field and lead by example. JOSH DAVIS - the most laid back boy I've ever met. Without a doubt one of the highlights of the year for me was Josh's double in the last match of the year to secure our spot in the semi's. JACK GRICE - Big Jack at the back when switched on always makes it hard for the opposition to get around him and always tries hard. JACK GUSTARD - another boy who always give 100% and a big reason for our improved defence this year. CHRIS HANCOCK - a very talented mid fielder who was a little bit up and down this year but boy did we miss him when he went overseas on holiday for a month. RORY HANNON - our main goalkeeper who did an excellent job in goals and kept us in many a game with some great saves. Also showed some promise with his limited time on the field. DEVLIN MALONE - our Player of the Year this year who was very consistent and gets through an unbelievable amount of work on the field. BRADEN JONES - had a good year in his right mid field role and went through a real purple patch mid season to play some outstanding football. With a little more consistency should show some real promise. ALEX KAKAKIOS - Run Alex Run, Alex has some exceptional speed across the ground, just needs to work on his ball skills and spend a little more time on the training paddock. NICK STILP - another boy who did an excellent job this year particularly when switched to sweeper. Reads the game well and showed vast improvement from last season. NICK EGGLESTON - Little Nick joined us mid season to help bolster our numbers and certainly improved the squad. A real scrapper on the field and very versatile, he also was our backup keeper and never let us down. I would also like to thank Ethan, Luke and Harris from the 9C's and Declan from the 10E's for helping out in our time of need in the school holidays. The vital point we gained from that match ultimately got us into the semi-finals. Congratulations to Devlin and Chris for making the Under 10's Sutherland Sharks squad. We are all so proud of you for not only the way you played, but for the manner in which you maintained your composure at all times during the year, not only displaying great skill, but more importantly great sportsmanship under, at times difficult circumstances. The team really responded to training with a much improved and sustained effort putting in the hard work week after week. The team discovered that working together, field positioning and passing produces results. Most importantly the team as a whole realized early that without the hard work invested at training we weren’t going to produce anything of value on game day. The season was full of highlights including a 11:3 win over the eventual minor premiers. That game produced 3 hat tricks one to Lachlan who had his game of the season that day, Peter and Stefan. Stefan scored 4 hat tricks in the first four games of the season to eventually end up with 30 of the teams 78 goals. Peter bagged 22, Nathan Collits 14 and the rest where shared among Lachlan, Declan, Roisin, Julian, Daniel R, Daniel L and Ruiari. Resulting in CWJ being the most potent attacking force in the competition. Unfortunately we couldn’t get everyone on the score sheet this year but 2/3 of the team scoring goals is a great achievement. Another highlight for me was the defensive improvement over the year, in the first 8 games we conceded 20 goals as opposed to the last 11games where we only allowed 10 to be scored against us. Considering the last 3 games included one against the comp leaders at the time a semi final and grand final the defence did an exceptional job. Further to that we played a lot of those 11 games with a minimum of 11 players, NO SUBS!!! The great effort coupled with their eagerness to learn at training resulted in a solid defensive line. Well done to Liam, Philip, Danial R, Hannah, Ewan, Declan, Julian and to all who played goal keeper this year, especially Declan , Lachlan and Phillip. The midfielders Lachlan, Ruiari, Nathan Cunningham, Roisin, Daniel L lead by Peter where everywhere. They produced some great passing, runs with and off the ball and tracked back to help out on defense as required. They continually kept shutting down the oppositions midfield and provided some super passes. We can’t forget our forwards Nathan Collits and Stefan who would at desperate times dig deep give it their all up front and than fall back on defense. Well done everyone, GREAT TEAM WORK!!!!!!!!! The grand final is a great reflection of our year. Our character as a team was tested that day. Losing the toss and running against a gale really took the confidence out of us, as a result we where camped inside our half from the start and not playing our best football. Unfortunately the occasional loose marking of a quality Barden Ridge attack gave them a chance to post a controversial goal in the first half. Nonetheless the kids with their never say die attitude epitomized how much this team has improved as a unit since their first game and rallied hard and thru skill, teamwork and determination created a number of scoring opportunities one of which happened late in the game which Stefan took with both hands blasting the ball in the back of the net. A great goal to watch!!!!! Thanks so much to all the families and friends for their support throughout this season! Thanks also to Scott Maddock the manager. And a special thanks to Ron Turrall for stepping in when I was away. I also would like to send out a huge thank you to both the coaches from the 9e's and 9f's for lending players when required.A very special thank you to the kids who have been a pleasure to coach, we are all so proud of you, you are CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately we lost some players from last year’s 10E Premiership winning team, but we welcomed three new players in Lewis Perkins, Scanlan Bradley and Tate Funston. We were also promoted 2 grades to the 11C’s. We always knew it would be a big ask but still set our sights high to at least make the semi finals this season. It was evident after the first game of the season that we were definitely going to be competitive this year. Within a few weeks it was also evident that it would be a year that 4 teams would dominate this 11C competition. Halfway through the season after round 9 we found ourselves 2nd on the competition table. At this stage we were true believers that making the semis was a real possibility. The boys had played some awesome soccer and we were looking really good on the field. Maintaining our positions and hitting our players with precision passing. The boys were really enjoying their soccer and so were the Coaches and Parents. For most of the year we had 1 reserve due to the fact that we only had 12 players in the team. When we found that we were short on players some weeks through injury or illness we borrowed players from both the 10B and 11E Como teams. A big thank-you to all the boys that stepped up and played with us this year, it was much appreciated by the whole team and supporters. The second half of the season did bring the boys back down to earth with a few losses to the higher ranked teams. After round 15 it was obvious that we would make the semi finals and a not too long after that we realized that we were going to finish 4th on the table. It was always going to be a big ask to make it through to the grand final from 4th position. This did not change the boys, their attitude and effort was absolutely fantastic. The semi final was a close game against our archrival Loftus(clash of the cousins as we like to call it) which had some spectacular goalkeeping saves from both sides. It was tight to the end but it just wasn’t to be our year. Full credit to the boys, they took the loss well and everyone was in high spirits. It’s also full credit to all the Parents as the boys are both good sports as well as great kids. We would also like to thank the Parents for the effort which they make throughout the season to make sure that the boys got to training and to each and every game. We must say that it has been an absolute pleasure to coach the boys this year and we hope to see Andrew, Cameron, Chris, Daniel, Harri, Jack, Jared, Joel, Lewis, Max, Scanlan and Tate back next year for another shot at the Premiership. 11 E P 17 W 5 Coach – Tim Beames Manager – Vivien Wall Position: 6th D L GF GA Pts 3 9 20 30 18 Coach – Manny Loutas Manager – Simon Doyle Minor Premiers / Premiers W D L GF GA Pts 12 3 2 33 9 39 12 A P 17 Stats include 2 State Cup games / 17 Competition games / Semi Final / Grand Final: 14 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses - 38 Goals For (includes 1 own goal), 12 Goals Against. A great season where we welcomed 8 new boys in Zac, Daniel, Callum, Steven, Angelo, Che, Jordan & Ryan to team up with 7 boys from last year’s successful 11Bs Minor Premiers/Premiers side. Only some of these boys had been exposed to the pace & intensity of A grade football but then these 2 groups of boys went onto gel & develop into an A grade team & have a monster of a season. All 15 boys should be proud of their efforts. The above results were very good but they were achieved as a result of great teamwork. To finish 1st by 3 points ahead of Gymea United in a very strong A grade competition was a very good achievement & demonstrated that the boys were consistently playing good football to wrap up the Minor Premiership!!! Our semi final appearance against 2nd placed Gymea United ended 0-0 & saw us progress through to the Grand Final. The Grand Final saw us pitted against Gymea United on a cold, blustery & slippery Heathcote Oval. We had the strong wind at our backs in the 1st half but there wasn’t much between both teams to go into half time 0-0. We faced the wind in the 2nd half but adapted much better to the conditions. With about 8 minutes to go we forced a corner. Up stepped Tom Doyle to deliver a perfectly flighted corner to Jordan Galic’s head who then forcefully nodded it into the roof of the net. 1-0 Como’s way!! The 15 strong Como squad were determined to hang onto this lead & did it in fine style to be cheered on by the many Como supporters (thank you all) to see out the final minutes to win the Premiership!!! Our State Cup campaign saw us win 4-1 (Anton 3, Jordan 1) against Hurlstone Park in the 1st round but we then bowed out in the 2nd round 2-0 to Maroubra United. A good experience all round. Thank you to all you parents for helping out with canteen, ground control duties, helping out on match day & for your overall support in making this a memorable season. Thank you to the 11As Coach Graham Davis for loaning us Jack (2 goals v Cronulla RSL) & Tim. Thank you to Dave Russell for his help at training & my thanks also to Gary Webster, Roger Smith, George Fragiadakis & John Galic for their help at training, as well as our many discussions on all things football. Finally, a big thank you on behalf of the team to Simon Doyle for managing the team ever so efficiently & for putting up with my rantings & ravings. Thank you for an enjoyable & successful season. Manny Loutas (Coach) Player Profiles (in alphabetical order) Dylan DANIELS aka “Rio Ferdinand” from England for his no nonsense tackling at sweeper but then made stopper his position. Dylan stopped many potential goals showing great vision with well timed tackles & clearances & a never say die attitude. Dylan used his speed & good ball control to run the ball out of defence & was one of the main reasons why we had the best defensive record in the competition. Thomas DOYLE (Vice Captain) aka “David Beckham” from England for his very good dead ball free kicks & corners. Tommy’s very good ball distribution, non stop running, strong tackling & passing of the ball was a highlight every week. His never say die attitude inspired his teammates to do the same week in week out. Tommy also scored 3 goals for the season & assisted in many team goals. Daniel FALLINS aka “John Terry” from England for his safe, reliable & tough defending where not much got past him during the season. Dan showed good vision to break down many attacks. Dan also kept in goals ever so confidently when Zac was away on the one occasion to proudly keep a clean sheet. Dan also scored 1 goal for the season & that was the only goal scored in a nail biting 1-0 win against Sylvania. Angelo FRAGIADAKIS aka “Carlos Tevez’’ from Argentina for his strong running & passing of the ball & had the uncanny ability to bob up at the right time to poach a goal when needed with that lethal left foot of his. Angelo is the total team player where he put in a 100% effort no matter when or where he played whether in the forwards or midfield. Angelo scored 3 goals for the season & assisted in many others. Steven FRAGIADAKIS aka “Ricardo Carvalho’’ from Portugal for his no nonsense style of defending & showing great vision & full concentration week in week out to be one of our most consistent defenders all season. Steven is one of the main reasons why we had the best defensive record in the competition & he should be proud of his very good season. Steven was a pleasure to coach & can only get better. Todd FRANCIS aka “John Arne Riise” from Norway for his running, passing & tackling of the ball mainly in defence. Todd was solid at the back with a never say die attitude & would use his pace to cut down his opposition to assist in keeping our best defensive record in the competition intact. Todd went about his business of defending with a minimum of fuss & was the silent achiever of the team. Jordan GALIC aka “Fabio Cannavaro” from Italy for the classy & stylish way he played at stopper & then at sweeper. Jordan seemed to have so much time on the ball in getting it out of the danger zone & would use it to find a midfielder or forward. Jordan displayed great vision & forged a great partnership with Dylan & all our defenders to allow us to have the best defensive record in the competition. Jordan scored 4 goals for the season. Samuel HAZELDINE aka “Sami Hyypia” from Finland for his no nonsense style of defending & putting his body on the line. Samuel showed confidence & calmness after dispossessing his opponent. Samuel’s well timed tackles broke down many potential goals & ran the ball from the defence to lay off a nice pass into the midfield or the forwards. A total team player who always gives 100%. Drew LENEHAN aka “Ruud van Nistelrooy” from Holland because when he scored goals with either foot you knew they were sweetly struck into the net. Drew’s natural goal scoring ability proved invaluable & would get the team a goal when we needed it most. Drew scored 4 goals for the season including a memorable long range free kick about 15 metres out from the penalty box against Cronulla RSL. Anton LOUTAS (Captain), aka “Fernando Torres” from Spain for his skilful running & dribbling with the ball in the forwards. Anton led by example every game where he also played in midfield making many piercing runs & passes & was strong in defence. One run in particular against our nemesis Marton he dribbled his way through 5 players to finish off with a lovely goal to help the team win 1-0 with minutes remaining. Anton scored 12 goals for the season. Zackery MORAN aka “Gianluigi Buffon” from Italy for being ever so confident & possessing razor sharp reflexes resulting in him making numerous 1st class saves during the season & in games which were tight to allow the team to get a much needed win. Zac was by far the best keeper in the 12A competition & was the consummate professional for a 12 year old boy! Zac was also one of the main reasons we had so few goals conceded all season. Callum RUSSELL aka “Ryan Giggs” from Wales for the way he dictated play down the left hand side of the midfield both in attack & defence. Callum developed immensely throughout the course of the season into a fine midfielder showing quite a bit of vision & also assisted in many team goals. Callum put in a 100% effort whether he was needed to play left back on the one occasion or anywhere across the midfield. Ryan SMITH aka “Frank Lampard” from England for doing the hard yards & for being the unsung hero in central midfield week in week out. Ryan went about his game in midfield ever so coolly & confidently where he assisted the defence when needed yet also dictated the middle of the park to assist in many team goals. Ryan’s passing was a delight to watch & his tackling was tenacious in taking no prisoners. Che WEBSTER aka “Deco” from Portugal for being hungry to want the ball all the time. Che initially started playing up front but over time I realised he had an important role to play in midfield to assist in many team goals. Che developed into a fine attacking right midfielder but also became a fine defensive midfielder where his tackles had a bite to them when winning those 50/50 balls. Che scored 6 goals for the season. Murray WHITESIDE aka “Michael Owen” from England for his good ball skills came into play mainly on the left side of midfield or left forward where his good ball distribution was second to none & his defensive work was solid. Murray volunteered to play keeper in one game when both Zac & Dan were unavailable & did an admirable job. Murray also scored 2 goals this season & assisted in many team goals. 12 B P 17 W 0 Coach – Glenn Trewhella Position: 8th D L GF 3 14 4 GA 45 Pts 3 This season began with a new look team and a new coach. Having been graded 12B, we went in to the season with confidence knowing that it would take time for the team to learn a new style of play and each other. The season began with a number of close results but unfortunately the result was always in favour of the other side. As we moved through the mid point of the season signs emerged that the new team structure was working, with key positions settled and the style of play evolving. Then the turn-around that made it all worthwhile for the players, parents and the coach. We played the top four teams in the run home. First up, a draw with Barden Ridge who were on top of the table! We celebrated like we had won. What a difference this made to the team. The next three games against the remaining top three teams saw us take our new-found confidence to a draw and two 1-0 losses. We went from averaging 3 goals against per game to only conceding 3 goals in the last 4 games and against the top 4 teams. A great way to finish the season! The team showed real courage, selfconfidence and team spirit to be highly competitive for the full game as the season drew to a close. A big thanks to Coach Glenn Trewhella – your positive and constructive approach was a big part of this. Matt – spent many games as goalkeeper. He showed maturity in the way he used his penalty area, stifling attacking opportunities by intercepting long passes and by closing down opposition attackers as they were attempting to shoot. He has great hands, rarely dropping a ball and pulled off a number of great saves. When on the field, he again showed vision when sweeping by reading the play and clearing the ball. Riley – played as our sweeper and Player of the Year. Fast, determined and with his long legs, he was never beaten. Many teams tried to kick the ball past him or run around him but Riley was always able to stop them. His goal kicking was fantastic, always getting the ball toward the half way line and he always shouted encouragement to the team. Nathan – playing left full back and the occasionally midfield, Nathan was always very tenacious. He marked his player, making tackle when the player received the ball and always made the opposition player feel under pressure by consistently nudging and challenging for the ball. If beaten, he would surprise the opposition player with his speed and be there in a flash to make the tackle. Scott – as the central defender, Scott was able to show his versatility. Solid on the ball, whether he used his feet or his head, many attacks were thwarted by Scott. Scott matured in the role of stopper as the season progressed showing an ability to read the play, intercepting the ball or closing down the opposition as they threatened our goal. His long throws were our secret weapon and they always surprised the opposition. Jono – played a number of games at right fullback and midfield, and a few runs up in the forwards. Jono showed speed, a solid kicking game combined with great vision as he moved across the field to counter attacks on the other side. His game against Gymea was memorable where a number of times he was the last player between the attackers and the goal and each time he prevented them from scoring by making a quality tackle. Joel – always tenacious in the way he played. Not afraid to use his body in a tackle, Joel would always make his tackles count. His speed allowed him to get himself in to space and leave defenders chasing. Always consistent in the way he played made Joel a valuable member of the team. Cameron – Mr Versatile. Cameron played in a number of positions during the year but excelled in the midfield role. With good ball skills, he was always able to control the ball and look for a passing opportunity. His determination to win the ball in close contests and then look for a teammate gave a sense of authority to the team rather than just kicking the ball down the field. Blake – the engine room of the team. Playing in the mid field, Blake always gave more than 100%, moving around the field to assist in defence and attack. His passion and determination encouraged his team mates to dig deep and his ‘no fear’ approach to winning the ball left many opposition players wondering what happened. Blake was always consistent and competitive. Kieran – magical skills with the ball at his feet, Kieran made the game of soccer look easy. With his ability to move the ball with the inside and outside of his foot, he could pass a number of opposition players in a moment. Playing in the central midfield, Kieran ensured the team had fluency as it moved from defence in to attack. Jonathon - with a number of games in goal and midfield, Jonathon showed his versatility. When in goal, Jonathon was able to throw his body through he air and pull off a number of classic saves. On the field, Jonathon made sure he always had space around him and this gave him time to look and pass. He had speed and this enabled him to chase down players whilst defending or make a long run down the wing when attacking. Jai –most improved player during the year. Jai played on the left side of the field as the coach though he was left footed only to learn late in the season that was not the case. Having the ability to kick with both feet, Jai was one of the best tacklers in the team. Many times it looked like an opposition player but he would beat him but Jai always managed to come away with the ball from the tackle. Adam – playing in the positions of goalkeeper and as striker during the season, Adam was dominant in both. In goal, Adam would always be in the right position, which enabled him to catch the ball rather than push it away. In doing this, he was able to take the team from defence to attack with a quick kick down field. As a striker, Adam would control the ball and look to pass enabling his teammates to join him and launch an attack. When he was in front of goal, Adam would always look to put a shot on goal. His header against Barden Ridge was a classic goal. Jason – as our main striker Jason made Jason a valuable contributor to the team. Always determined to win, Jason looked dangerous when he had the ball at his feet. With a fantastic kick, Jason was able to score from set plays and make our corners threatening as the ball would sail across the six yard box. His two goals from free kicks were fantastic to watch. 12 D P 17 W 4 Coach – Brad Matthews Manager – Mark Gregory Position: 8th D L GF GA Pts 0 13 17 64 12 Although the boys didn't get the results of the previous couple of the seasons, it was another successful year, with some solid improvements in skill and teamwork. Most importantly the boys continued to enjoy their football. It was always going to be a tough year with the team going up a grade. After winning 2 of the first 3 games, the challenge got a bit more difficult with 2 players breaking their arms during the season. Often playing without subs against quality opposition, the team struggled defensively mid season. However, to the boy's credit, they never lost heart and were able tighten up their defence by the end of the season. The season finished on a high with a couple of wins in the last few rounds. Player highlights as follows:Jake - big improvements this year and played a key role in moving to the sweeper position mid season to shore up the defence. Would prefer to play in the forwards but made the sacrifice for the team without complaint (not to the coach anyway). Nicholas - always heavily involved in the game and scored his first goal in many years in the last game of the season. Great effort. Jordan Ellis - another player who showed big improvements this year and is a quality and super reliable defender. Josh Finlay - made a big contribution when in goals this year and always showed pace and enthusiasm when in the outfield. Liam - another speedstar who created plenty of opportunities down the flanks. Josh Gibbs- award for the best broken arm of the season. Always contributed with great skill and ball control. Daniel - continued to demonstrate great dribbling skills and did some excellent work on his passing and kick placement this year. Jordan Leplaw - has the biggest kicking range in the team and had a great season in defence. His handstand following his goal from the centre back position was a highlight. Lachlan - always gave a 100% with great tackling skills and much improved positional play. Dale - ever reliable when in goals and always covers a huge amount of ground when playing in the mid field. Rhys - created plenty of opportunities for the forwards with some great throughballs and passing. Jack - had some sensational games in goals this year and saved around 6 near goals in one game. Highly reliable when playing in the backs as well. Gerad - award for 2nd best broken arm. One of the most accurate kicks in the team and a fully accomplished goalie. We still easily made the semi’s despite a bad knee injury to one of our strongest players making him miss the second half of the season, and working through the vagaries of two boys being committed to school soccer for various weekends. There were a number of highlights this year. On the field the emphatic 5-2 victory against Georges River was the best game of soccer these boys had ever played whilst off the field was the party after losing the semi final where the parents all stand around bemoaning what could have been whilst the boys just pick up a soccer ball and start playing again...the loss already forgotten. He has a fantastic soccer brain and a great knack of playing fantastic through balls. Never gives up and gives 110% every game. A really great team player, and is a dream to coach. Josh you had a great year and you are a real asset to the team. Peter Rowlands. Our keeper this year did a first rate effort. New to the toughest position on the field he took to it like a duck to water. Numerous times he showed real courage and determination taking on the opposition attack and saved the scorelines in a number of games for us. Congratulations Pete on a great season. Hayden Ross. One of our most consistent and valuable players. He often gets shuffled around from position to position, but he never complains and always does an outstanding job wherever he is put. Loves to run with the ball and some of his moves down the sideline were fantastic to watch. You should be very happy with your year H. Angus Rigby-Wild. A very welcome addition to our team. He is strong in every facet of the game, he is a good thinker, he is quick and has great ball skills, but most of all he is so determined. Wonderful to coach as he is capable of playing in any position on the field, he is so enthusiastic and just never and never gives up. You and a very talented player angus and you will go on to bigger and better things. Elliot Ofori. Elliot has got fantastic natural ability and is a real asset with his size and strength in attack. His free kicks are exceptional and when Elliot hits a ball they stay hit. Saved his best for last this season and really stepped up to his potential when we needed it towards the end of the year. You should be proud of your achievements this year Ell, and I get the feeling next year will be even better. Angus McClean. Gus...our revelation from South Australia. Had a great year in attack and improved his defence with real dedication at training. Looks super sharp running onto through balls and was really unlucky not to have a couple of more goals. Gus you learnt a lot this year and you are headed to be a very good attacker. Luke Manos. Started the season really well and was in may matches the most dominant player of the field...then disaster a crippling knee injury puts him out for the season. Despite this his contribution to the team was still so high as he is such a great mate to all the kids, he has such a positive attitude he was inspirational even when injured. Get you back next year big fella. Tom King. Tom was injured early in the year and had school soccer commitments kept him outside the rhythm of the team for the first half of the season, but came back with a vengeance when fully fit. Saved his best for the last 3 or 4 games where his heavy tackling and excellent ball distribution really shored up our mid field. Stay injury free and you will be at the top of your game Tom. Jeremy Chapman. A great year for you Jem. Your talking on the field (to the players’ NOT the referee) was a real highlight of your maturity this season. Good to see you not panicking with the ball and wanting the ball at your feet. Your tackling and determination make a coach very happy. Kayne Bryant. Unusually for Kayne started the year a little slow, but he fixed that by the end of the year when we got our old rock back. Playing out in the wider full back role gave him a better chance to show off his ample ball skills and attacking flair whilst running down his opponents. PLEASE learn to jockey next year. . . PLEASE! Luke Bressington. One of our other rock solid defenders. Luke’s sheer presence and his ball domination is invaluable in this team. Formed great combinations with his other back throughout the year, has great clearing kicks and tackles tremendously hard. Cool as a cucumber when taking penalties, Luke is cool all the time making him a great stabilising influence on the park and in the team. Jordan Bentley. Was a coaches delight this year...after 4 years he is kicking and kicking well with his LEFT foot. What an achievement Jordy. Not usually his strong point but Jordans defensive workload this year was exceptional. He sprinted back consistently to help his defence. What a team player well done Jordan. Jordy I think you still get the biggest cheer from the parents when you race down the right side line lining up to shoot...keep it up mate. Andre Alday. What a season Andre!! You earned the player of the year, and you scored the most goals. Your game has improved so much in the 6 months off season, it was unbelievable. Your speed across the ground and you tackling determination and courage had to be seen to be believed. Well done mate you should always remember this season as a real turning point in your soccer career. All the boys trained exceptionally well this year and they are just fantastic to coach. Thanks for the season all of you. The step up to A grade means tougher opposition but there is also the added pressure we put on ourselves and on each other to perform at the higher level. Some boys handled it very well and really stepped up to the marked this year. Others found it harder to cope. But all the boys showed improvement and I believe that all of them can perform at A grade level if they keep putting in the effort and gain the confidence to play at this level. We had a lot of unlucky and frustrating games this year where we deserved a better result. Some might argue that we could have got more results if we played a more conservative style. But this year was not about results and I was never disappointed with our style of play. The boys played some great attacking football this year. We scored against every team in A grade except for Seagulls who had the best defence in the competition. With some more clinical finishing we could have scored lots more goals. We were competitive against every team, and from a neutral point of view, every game was entertaining to watch. From a coach's view it was sometimes tense and frustrating, but there were moments in games which were absolutely brilliant and a joy to watch. But the most pleasing thing about this team was how well the players bonded, especially the new players. After a few weeks you would never had guessed that some of these players had never met before joining the team, and it was great to see new friendships develop and hopefully grow stronger in years to come. A few words about each of the talented players in the team, who were both very skilful as individuals and as a team. They were good enough to play in any position and many of them played in all positions throughout the year. Ryan Landers (c) - completely blew me away with an outstanding start to the season. Four goals in his first 3 games, Ryan took A grade by the horns and never Looked back. He was our team captain and lived up to the title. I can see a big future for this player. Brent Shiels (vc) - versatile and skilful Great in attack and defence Brent saved our bacon plenty of times in the backs but also picked up a goal this year in attack. Brent was a great addition to the team is a very talented player that can go on to bigger things if he wants them. Liam Henderson - for someone who had never played club football before Liam had amazing skills. He struggled a bit at the start of the season with tactics and a short attention span but by the end of the season he was the best player on the park and blitzing the opposition in both attack and defence Jamie Collits - Became a much more attacking player this year and showed some superb skills and passes, and has excellent vision. Loved scoring against Menai, Jamie never missed a game this year and apart from an almost SBW moment, he never missed a training session either. Even though others may not see it, Jamie has a great passion for the game could definitely go on to bigger things if he has the dedication to see it through. Michael Bujcevski - never gave up and always stayed positive even though A grade was a big step up. Had some strong games in the backs and midfield and was very good at organising his defence With more hard work and some confidence Michael can make it in A grade. Mitchell Hughes - Excellent effort and great commitment. Played well in both defence and attack and showed lots of skill and also showed leadership qualities. Mitchell has the raw talent to be a great player and just keeps getting better and better. Will come back stronger and sharper next year. Harris Loutas - a great defensive player that knows where to be to cut of the opposition pass but also very good at giving the pass and a big asset to a team that likes to play possession football. Harris has a great spirit and work ethic and if he keeps that up he will become a top player in 2009. Yorick Roydhouse - excellent goalkeeper and made some great saves throughout the year. He's kicking also greatly improved. Yorick would have found A grade extra tough as he came up from C grade but I can see him making a another big step up next year. Brendan Drury - converted to a great defender this year and had plenty of outstanding games. Also showed he stills has the attacking flair when given a chance and will look to combine both aspects next year and become a more complete player. Tim Werger - our top goal scorer and also a top player. Showed some excellent touches on the ball and really developed as our target striker. Scored some great goals including 2 very nice headers. Lots of big things to come from Tim in the future. Jake Warner - very skilful and loved taking on the opposition (and the coach). Jake had great attacking moves and picked up a few goals but also improved his defensive game and tactical game this year, which will provide a good step up for next year. Ryan Gannon - great skill and pace, Ryan loves flying down the right wing and became very good at providing crosses from the right wing, which became a dangerous threat to our opposition. Has had awful luck with injuries but a good rest during the off season and Ryan will come back stronger and more dangerous in 2009. A great team, great players and a fantastic bunch of boys to coach. Even though the results may not have been as good as they could have been, I believe this team made a successful introduction to A grade. Next year they will become much stronger and, hopefully with a bit of luck and a bigger team, I can see this team challenging for the premiership in 2009. A few thank you's now. A huge thanks to Angela, who took up the reins as team manager and did a great job looking after the team from filling in match sheets (especially with the all the borrowed players we had), to providing watermelons and cup cakes for the boys. Also thank you to Vesna for her lunches and her support. And thank you to Ian for his support of my ideas and extra curricular activities. Thank you to all the parents for their support at the games and especially thank you for trusting in me to develop your boy's skills and allowing me the freedom to teach them the way I know best. Thank you to the boys from the 14Bs, 13As and 12As who played for us this year. With only 12 players in the team (and constantly missing players on holidays, or through injury or other commitments) we ended up borrowing 13 different players through out the year. But most of all thank you to the boys. I was expecting some pubescent, teenage angst and attitude this year, but that never happened. Apart from some clowning around, and some frustratingly short attention spans, the boys were very well behaved and showed great maturity. I'm very happy with the friendships they have made and the support they have given each other. There are some great memories and experiences that I will take away from this year, both on and off the field. I'm proud of the progress they have made this year and look forward to a bigger and better season next year. Well done guys. 14 B P 17 W 3 Coach – Fred Polimeni Manager – Kay Macadam Position: 6th D L GF GA Pts 8 6 69 30 17 The 14B team comprised half of the B and C teams from the previous season. Under Fred’s guidance and leadership, it was only a matter of only a few weeks before the boys started to gel. During the season, they became stronger and improved their skills dramatically. Each week their confidence grew. From the first match to the last, the 14B team gave it everything they had and really put in a gutsy effort. They demonstrated plenty of character and determination. Unfortunately, we were riddled with injuries, however, we had wonderful support from other teams, which was most appreciated. Overall, the boys drew or defeated higher ranked teams on the ladder than them and proved that they were always a threat. Well done guys! Good luck with your summer sports and soccer season next year. Thank you to all of the parents for being so reliable and for your fantastic support. To Fred, Luis, Fernando and Brett W – you have done an incredible job, bringing out the best in these boys. Thank you so much for your commitment, dedication and for sharing your passion with our children. 14B Coach Fred Polimeni end of season report Although we did not make the finals the team had a respectful season, 8 draws worth 1 point made it difficult to make the final 4. A season plagued by injuries, the boys played on. Often matching it with leaders of the comp, the team played a physical and a skilful game with a never say die attitude. The main focus this year at training was on developing skills such as shielding, ball control, passing etc. It was very pleasing to see the improvement of the boys game throughout the season. Yes there is still a lot to learn, but these boys no longer just play kick and chase and therefore we saw some exciting games this year. 14B player profiles: James: First year in goals was a standout. If there was a better goalie in our grade I did not see him. Under Fernando’s guidance this season James is already building a reputation as a true goalie and I believe can only get better with more experience. Todd: Played some blockbusting games for us this year. A powerful runner with our without the ball. Mainly played in the defence but played also as a striker where his thumping kicks found the back of the nets a few times. Jak: One of the most improved of the boys this year. Relished playing in the backs starting to read a game well and along with his speed, and being at the right place at the right time, managed to shut down quite a few run away strikers. Jake: Played in the defence this season. Jake plays with no fear copped some hard knocks putting his body on the line but always gets back up and does his job. Makes any striker work hard to try to beat him and most could not. Callum: In the engine room centre mid. Tough and skillfull player made a welcome back from rugby league. Never stopped running and a huge work rate every game. One of the quietest boys of the team but very loud on the field. Sean F: Plays out wide in the midfield. Sean loves to attack and with his speed and strength can be a handful to the opposition. Sean continues to improve every season and starting to put some good passing in his game. Sean P: Played on the wings and midfield this season. Worked hard on his skills at training where his ball control and kicking have made a big improvement. Sean stepped up well this season. Chris: Played in every position this year including goalie, benefited a lot this year with his willingness to learn new skills. Always gave his best during a game or at training pushed himself all season and as a result got better with every game. Josh: Injury after injury unfortunately plagued Josh this season. A huge loss when he could not play, hopefully he will have an injury free season next year. Josh is a very talented and skillfull player and makes a difference whenever he is on the field Lachlan: Physical and aggressive and always hungry for a goal, a true striker. Can be a real danger man to the opposition when he’s on the ball. Started the season quiet but ended it with some super games. Brett: A knee problem for most of the season put Brett off his natural game. A boy who is skillfull and can read a game, to his credit Brett battled on and was there for the team every week, a courageous effort. Justin: Broken wrist and ankle injury made him miss some games but managed to get back and finish the season off. Along with his vision and ball skills passing the through ball between defenders is his trademark. Blake: Everything I expect of a captain Blake did and more. Led the team by example played every game till the end with his never say die attitude. This inspired the boys to play to their best. One of our best week after week, a great captain’s knock. Good job Blake. I would like to thank the boys of the 14D’s and 13B’s for helping us out throughout the season, the coaches and managers, Alex, Ian, Anthony and Jackie. Much appreciated was all the support of the parent’s of the boys, it made coaching that much easier. The teams manager, Kay, for doing such a great job for us, did a lot of work and always on the ball. . My assistant Brett W for being a big help to me this season, especially the nights when my knee was playing up. The job is there for you if you want it next year. Fernando trained the boys in the skills that are required of a goalie. The boys really enjoyed getting trained by someone with so much experience in the nets. Luis my right hand man lives and breathes this game and plays it with great skill and passion. Coaching the boys along side me this year was a huge benefit to the team and myself. Thank You. I am not going to get tactical and technical and try to analyse how the team can improve, that can wait for next season. Overall it was a good season, I hope the boys enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank the boys for the respect you have given Fernando, Luis and myself. You have all been a credit to the team and a credit to your club. Have a safe summer and I hope we can do it all again next season. Coach Fred 14 D P 17 W 4 Coach – Alex Atic Manager – Ian Smith Position: 6th D L GF GA Pts 3 10 13 44 15 It was a pleasure coaching the boys in 2008,and watching them develop as soccer players and team mates. There was remarkable improvement particularly in fitness, communication on the field, and teamwork .In the 2nd half of the season we had some excellent results and stirring performances, including giving each of the 14D grand finalists the fight of their lives. In the coaching dept I tried to get the boys to focus on enjoying their soccer, to play a positive style and to learn to think for themselves on the field. This resulted in a team that played an intuitive and free flowing game, that was very entertaining to watch and one which I think the boys enjoyed playing, particularly when we started to string together some good results. Sadly we lost a couple of strong players right at the start in Jordan and Sefton through injury. There was impressive improvement in fitness and conditioning of all the boys particularly Angus, Ethan and Justin A, who ought to be commended for that. Smithy made a late comeback from injury and showed plenty of grit and determination in his matches. As far as skills go, Blake, Lleyton and again Justin A led the way. In terms of commitment, Aaron, Sasha and Daniel were rarely anything less than an inspiration to their team. In terms of all round improvement, Steven led the way with strong defence week after week, and Matt with clever and effective attack. Our goalie Tom saved the day repeatedly, and was a quiet hero for us, never failing to put his body on the line for his team. In a team full of great lads, with a fantastic attitude, who were respectful and cooperative all year, special thanks go to Blake the vice captain, and particularly to our captain Lleyton, who both showed an exemplary attitude, and strong leadership qualities, in always putting their team's needs first. I believe that all of these boys have a great future in soccer and at this club, and if in future they continue to improve at the rate they did in 2008, the sky's the limit. Coach – Chris Martin Manager – Medhat Wassef Minor Premiers / Runners Up P W D L GF GA Pts 17 12 3 2 60 19 39 15 B Well what a year that was. In review you’d have to say we had a great year, Minor Premiers and playing great football, but it’s that last result that hurts. Good things beaten, again. The luck or otherwise of this side never ceases to amaze me. We were more or less beaten by conditions on the day than anything else, but it still hurts. Our results this year make excellent reading. On top with 39 points, with 12 wins, 3 draws and only 2 losses, with 60 goals for and 19 against. The top attack and the second best defence and playing in our first grand final. The team really does play good football and have demonstrated that against all comers. Other teams tend to play the reef it up the middle and run onto it type of football, which does cause us the occasional problem, but which each year we get better and better at defusing. Unfortunately, the grand final was an example of where it can go all wrong, but as stated the conditions certainly contributed to that, and Menai did play that style of game. On the last game, the Menai coach was gracious enough to state that they really didn’t know how they could beat us as we were the best football playing side, but when he woke on the day and saw the conditions and ground, he knew it’d become a lottery. I suppose you can say that in victory, but he had no reason to say it other than he thought it true. Small solace I know, but we were truly the side to beat this year. Gymea’s coach saw me at the Final also and said the same thing, so there must be some element of truth there. Training has been a lot of fun this year as the sessions were set to practice and refine attacking play rather than defensive drills. Next year I intend to continue with that as it certainly pays more dividends, as with everyone attacking in training, the defence quickly learnt how to defend better and improved, or they would of sunk without a trace. They, as already said, had the second best defence in the league, so it seems to work. I’d like to thank John Hughes for undertaking managing of the team this year, to great effect. Also thanks to all the parents for their support throughout the year and good sportsmanship as is always on display from us, which is truly wonderful and appreciated. Also, thanks to Ben Hurst and Liam Champness from our 15C side for turning out for us at the end of the year and really showing their class as players, Thank you to all the boys for your efforts throughout the year at both training and on the pitch and for your humour and good nature which is very much appreciated. I still enjoy your company and love watching you play in particular to see all that hard work in training paying off, with the fantastic football you are capable of playing. See you all next year and look forward to another awesome season. 15B’s Player Profiles Mitchell Cardy: Fast, strong and tough with the wickedest shot going from long range. Mitch enjoyed dominating the middle of the park and is becoming a very good centre midfield or centre back, scoring 5 goals this year. Tom Evans: Tom has showed his versatility all year working equally well as a forward or midfielder, and when asked will play and star in defence also. Scored 6 goals this year and also created 4 more with assists or where his final pass led to goals. Jarryd Evans: Played his usual brilliant passing game this year distributing the ball to his supports with great and accurate passing skills. Also found an extra gear in speed this year and chased down the opposition often in defence, and with a great shot scored 4 goals and had 2 assists. Blake Fenton: Had a really outstanding year as a defender and is becoming one of the toughest players to get past and one that can be relied in to perform the hard work when needed. Also scored two goals this year. Zac Garvey: Played awesome as centre back dominating the middle of the park and really putting his body on the line in defence. Zac at centre back was a real find this year and we look forward to his continued efforts there. He also managed to score 2 goals this year. Andrew Hill: Out of goals this year and into the midfield where he showed great skills and determination with a high work rate also, creating 4 goals with assists, or the “miracle ball”! Steven Hughes: Great year in defence proving to be tough to get past and clever with the ball when he takes it off the opposition and giving great passes. Got amongst the goals also, netting twice. Ryan Kurtz: Fast and great with the ball at his feet proving a nightmare to opposition defences down the right, beating them with pace and sending in brilliant crosses. Scored 7 goals and had an awesome 10 assists. Jackson Martin: Hard and tough up front this year showing great skills and a deadly shot carving up the opposition defence, but on occasions helped out in defence showing a dab hand at sweeper also. Scored 16 goals winning the golden boot for the team and had 14 assists proving very unselfish. Kamine Naidoo: Speed to burn and skills to match, Kamine was a handful for the opposition taking them on and making them look ordinary. He was a welcome addition to our attack scoring 4 and creating 4 with his assists. Brad Nash: Our new goalkeeper who only conceded 13 goals all year with the other and first 6 scored against the team when he was off with a broken finger. Bounced back well from the early season set back and truly pulled off some stunning saves when needed proving very reliable between the sticks. Scored a hat-trick of goals in one of the games we allowed him out on the field. Alexander Quandt: Tough, hard and fast and always doing the hard yards in the middle for us which is great knowing he can be relied on. Scored 4 goals and had 6 assists with these often arising from the great corners that he began to hit this year. Issac Wassef: Played very smart as sweeper this year organising his defence and leading them in the tough stuff as usual proving almost impossible to beat. Managed to go forward and score 3 goals this year also. 15 C P 17 W 9 Coach: Craig Champness Manager – Noel Napier Position: 6th D L GF GA Pts 3 5 55 47 30 Playing in a 12 team comp. finishing 6th only 5 points adrift of first and second place, it was a very close comp this year and it could have gone anyway right up to the very last round. Throughout the year the boys played some great football, most games with no reserves, or playing 1 short, giving everything they had. This year we saw 2 new players join the team, we welcomed Ben Hurst and Ben Thompson, both new comers to the beautiful game, with them making great contributions to the team and fitting in exceptionally well. Every team member should be proud of their achievements. Player Profiles – Lloyd – our goalie, who plays an outstanding game both in goals and when the opportunity arises on the field. As the year continued, his confidence really built up and he made some great saves. Edward – the utility player, who really found that playing sweeper a rewarding challenge and certainly gave the opposition players a hard passage to get through. Glenn – playing this year as right back and taking to the challenge very well. Some strong defence occasionally saw him get the wrong end of the ref’s penalty count. Luke – left back, who when on his game is a very good player both in defence and some great runs into the attack. Ben R – centre back / midfield and occasional goalie, determined and great defender caused the opposition many headaches with his tackles. A very capable attacker who set up some great plays Drew – midfielder, who can really belt a ball, great defender and certainly caused the opposition pain with some great tackles playing the man of the ball. Liam – midfield / centre back, all round player in defence and attack, dictated play in the midfield, setting the attack plays with determined attacks and damaging defence. Bryce – a great midfield player whose abilities to inject himself into the play will become more apparent as he grows in confidence, a beautiful striker of the ball. Ben T – over the year greatly improved and was an important part of the team creating havoc with the opposition with his determined defence and very strong attacking plays. Ben H – very gifted player whose ability to out run the defence and attacking players caused many teams to re think their game plan and this created many opportunities for Ben to score. Adam – a determined forward who has some great skills that caused many teams to mark him tightly, as his ability to get behind the defence usually meant that the midfield opened up for us. Daniel – talented forward who can turn the pace on and gifted with a good left foot bagged the majority of the goals for the team. Isobel, Amber and Kirby are still very young and only in their second ever season. Isobel volunteered to be goalie for a half each week and at this age quite brave in itself. She also developed her field kicking skills. Kirby also greatly grew in confidence and made some boomers while Amber was just a tiger in every game and no matter what position she was placed in. Our defence was solid all year and most improved Elisha was probably our most consistent player all year. She covered, kicked hard and read the play well. Her best mate Francis played really well and they make a great team. The last member of this trio was Rachel who had some confidence problems returning after a horrendous injury run. But she was straight back into it not holding back and she read the game beautifully. Our hardworking midfield was headed by Jordie and Keely. They got themselves into great position to score goals and defended stoutly. Chloe had the biggest kick in the competition and this lead to her topping the goal count with some amazing efforts. I maybe be biased but Lizzy has wonderful potential, she is hard at the ball and dribbles brilliantly. Thanks Kim And Brett, Gary and all the parents for their support and friendship. Thanks Dougo Chris Martin Maureen Quirk Position: 2nd – Runners Up W D L GF GA 12 3 3 33 23 W13 A P 18 Pts 39 These girls are a combination of last years W13A’s who finished bottom the previous year and half of last years 12B’s (who could still play in the 12’s this year), along with a couple of girls that had been playing with various other teams. At the start of the season no one could tell how they would go, but it was looking like it might be pretty hard when you consider that the Association in their wisdom graded us in the A’s when we had asked to be considered for B’s. Just shows the Association some times get it right! To say the girls have had a great year is an understatement. We were runners up after the end of the rounds this year coming second to a virtual representative side from Lilli Pilli which had scored 125 goals and only conceded 2 and had not lost or even drawn a game. Our girls were the first side to score a goal against them and we were the only team to do it in open play, with the other side to do it scoring from a penalty. We were also the only side to truly push them when we lost to them in round 18 by only one goal. Lilli Pilli were starting to get worried about us then as they had beaten everyone else by at least 3 goals and most times it was 8 or 9 (They averaged 7 per game). Our record this year reads well with us recording 12 wins, three draws and only three losses to finish on 39 points, six points clear of third place. Two of our losses were to Lilli Pilli, so we were only beaten once by “normal’ club teams. We scored 33 goals, or just under 2 per game, and conceded 23, and if you take out the 10 scored by you know who our defensive record was excellent and we were worthy contestants into the finals series. In the semi final Lilli Pilli beat us 5 nil but they had really scored some freakish goals in doing so, and you could sense our girls were getting fired up and hoping for another confrontation with them. To do so though we had to overcome an extremely determined Georges River and we ousted them through a nerve racking and intense nil all draw in the Final. It was a really exciting contest with Rivers fast and tough striker a real handful and their goal keeper keeping them in the contest with some fantastic saves when goals looked certain. It was a relief to get through and the girls then had to regroup after a tough contest like that and psyche themselves up on how to get through the grand final against such an intimidating opponent. The grand final proved to be the most exciting game of the year, with our girls really pumped and willing to fight for the title. At half time having absorbed all Lilli Pilli could throw at us while they were running with the wind at their backs, it was looking good for an upset. However the Lilli Pilli girls shocked us with an acute angled shot which was just a fraction too high for our Dame of the Game Amelia in goals to save part way into the second half. Damn, another of their freaky goals! All of Lilli Pilli thought they had it won then but didn’t reckon on the fight in our girls who came out blazing from the restart. Lilli Pilli were forced to desperately defend from then on, and were placed in the unfamiliar position of not being able to get out of their half such was our teams determination. Then the unthinkable for the berries happened! Kiralee hit a long high ball into their goal mouth and their keeper realising that half of Como were coming at her rushed to save it and misjudged it, having it bounce over her and forcing her to rush to recover and try and stop it on its way in. As I said half of Como were onto it with Lauren winning the race and managing to put the ball beyond a desperately diving keeper for a fantastic equaliser, sending the game into extra time and our spectators over the moon in celebration. The extra time contest was end to end with both sides testing each other out in a grand final truly deserving of the name. We couldn’t quite get the winning goal, but in the draw we were so thrilled that it certainly looked like a victory such was our girls excitement. It was a wonderful end to the year, and the look on the opposition faces confirmed we had come away enjoying it much more then them. When you consider that the grand final was the only game Lilli Pilli didn’t win you can understand why, so a moral victory to us. The teams record at the end of the year is a direct result of the work and effort they have put in at training during the season. They are great to coach and have always endeavoured to do everything asked of them and their skills as football players is becoming quite high. They can all run the ball well and pass and move into space for return passes as a good team should. They back each other up and play for each other so they are a champion team, not a team of champions unlike some others we know of. It is a significant difference, and we all saw the result of that in the last game of the year. If it had of gone a bit longer, I reckon we would of won it as our team play for each other, and look out for one another. A very big thank you to our Manager Maureen Quirk on behalf of the team and myself who I couldn’t get by without. Maureen always gets all the administration and organising done with no fuss and allows me to do all the dancing around and jumping up and down on the sideline, with the occasional quiet word to keep me in line when needed. To the parents of the team members a very big thank you for your support and cheering from the sideline. We are always great sports and are fantastic advertisements for the true meaning of sport, which is to enjoy, participate and encourage and we represent the club in an exemplary manner. Thanks also for helping out with the ground duties when rostered it’s really appreciated. Finally thanks girls for your efforts this year and allowing me to coach you and be a part of your success. I am exceptionally proud of all of you and have enjoyed every minute of it. W13A’s Player Profiles Brigit Barnes: Brigit is our fast and tough enforcer at the back. She revels in the big tackle and can easily catch any breaks with her exceptional speed. Opposing players learn quickly not to tangle with her. Kitiana Bell: Kiti has exceptional speed and skill and is always in the thick of the action, equally at home in the forwards or midfield. She has a high work rate and never stops and has scored 4 goals this season. Stephanie Breyley: Stephanie always works hard for us in the middle tackling and chasing and clearing the ball upfield with an exceptional boot. Steph is equally at home in centre mid or centre back positions and can always be relied on. Tomasin Clark: Tomasin is pure speed and didn’t we need often with her capable of chasing down opposition breaks with ease. Those players couldn’t believe how quick she could catch them, and her tough tackling also meant she formed a great partnership with our other defenders and she has become an exceptional fullback. Bonita Fragiadakis: Bonita has great ball skills when she dribbles the football and combined with a big kick means she is a real handful for the opposition. Bonita can play in midfield or forward, scored 4 goals this year and is also a pretty handy goalkeeper. Casey Gentgall: Casey is strong and fast and works all game and has become a high work rate, tough, dependable midfield player who can also be relied on as a full back or goalkeeper when needed. Casey also scored a goal this year, now all we have to do is get her to give away that other game! Amelia Gilday: Amelia is a skilful midfield player who provides great passes to her supports, scoring 3 goals for us in the season. Amelia is a great team player and played in goals for us in the finals series proving very hard to get past playing exceptionally well in the grand final. Kiralee Martin: Kiza is our sweeper and can always be relied on to chase down the opposition, win the ball and move it back up field with exceptional skill. Kiralee is a tough tackler also and takes on far bigger rivals and gives them a lesson in football every time and she managed to share a goal in the grand final through her big kick. Lauren Murfitt: Lauren is our striker and has brilliant skills running the ball past opposition defenders and is tough enough to be able to withstand some pretty hefty hits from them also, giving as good as she gets. Lauren scored 10 goals this year, 11 counting a shared effort in the grand final, and is the winner of the golden boot for top goal scorer in the team Eliza Potter: Eliza is a powerhouse central defender who never stops tackling chasing and clearing the ball. The team relies on Eliza in this position as she constantly repels and stops all opposition attacks, with those teams bewildered on how she is always on to them no matter where they move the ball to try and get through. Shelley Quirk: Shelley is a speedy forward or midfielder with great positional play always there to finish off attacking raids. Shelley works hard for the team in attack always getting herself free of the defence with her elusiveness, and is a great finisher jagging 7 goals this year. Chanel Soames: Chanel has terrific speed and a strong tackle and can be relied on to upset the rhythm of the opposition in attack as she is always after them. Chanel plays equally well in mid field or defence and used her speed to grab 2 goals in one match in the forwards, so is very versatile. Chelsea Spilstead: Chelsea is a high work rate defender, mid fielder or forward and can be relied on to play in all those positions and give 100% effort. Unfortunately Chelsea got hurt right at the end of the season but never let that stop her cheery face showing up to support us all the way through. Helena Tome: Helena works hard wherever she has to play and has shown she has the skills and toughness to handle every position. Helena is a determined defender and non stop midfielder and showed her versatility scoring a goal when put in the forwards. Chris Martin W14 B P 18 Jeff Stewart Minor Premiers / Premiers W D L GF GA 17 0 1 80 11 Pts 51 The girls completely dominated the competition this year taking out both the Premiership and the Minor Premiership. Surviving the entire Association competition undefeated is a great success and a credit to all of the girls. On top of that, they also performed admirably in the State Cup – losing (in a very close and hard fought game) to the ultimate runner up. Each girl, in their unique way, brought a different skill set and style of play to the team. We started with some very proficient players, some experienced players, some in their first season, some that just wanted to kick a ball, and all of them very interested in having a chat and a giggle. I am happy to say that we finished the season with a group of players that combined as a very strong and cohesive team. Ball skills have definitely improved, passing ability, game vision and the will to succeed have all become apparent. The girls demonstrated some very nice and entertaining football week on week, with spectators enjoying the passing and ball control, many opportunities to score evident and the opposition often wishing they could be elsewhere. The games were definitely a pleasure to watch and the girls appear to have enjoyed bonding as a team (with an opportunity to chat, giggle and laugh regularly). Kindi Peacock was a stalwart as our regular goalkeeper and is one of the reasons that our ‘Goals Against’ is so low. Although her preference was to play on the field, Kindi definitely put the team as a priority and (on average) played at least half of each game in goals and performed very admirably. Rosie Smith, before her untimely accident, was also a very proficient goalie and instilled fear into the oppositions attack. The other girls rotated through goals on a regular basis, such that we managed to only concede a total of 10 goals all year. A testament to the low goal count against us was also the rock solid defence. Led by Georgia Quinn as Sweeper and Kate Beattie as the regular Centre defence, the opposition had very little opportunity to attack us down the centre of the field. Georgia and Kate cleaned up the few balls that made it to them and blunted any of the ‘kick and run’ tactics that the opposition teams may have attempted, effectively forcing the opponents to attack down wide. With out trio of Abbey Middleton, Tori Guy and Cassie Gillett all growing in confidence and skill each week the Wing Defence was also solid. The girls challenged hard, stopped our opponents from turning the ball, tackled successfully and looked to pass or dribble out wide when in possession. Abbey also subbed as a very able midfielder and centre defence when needed, making some superb runs back into the attack and setting up our attack whenever possible. Kindi when given a chance on the field, generally in the defence or the midfield, made the most of her opportunity with solid tackling and nice passes. The Midfield of Georgia Deeth, Lisa Matthews, Rosie Smith, and Paige Burton controlled the centre of the park with skill and intelligence. The girls could be seen running all game (as good midfielders do), cleaning up the loose balls from defence, supporting the attack wherever possible, and distributing some fantastic balls that made the job of the forwards so much easier. Ball Control and vision was evident. Georgia D (in her first year) grew in skill each day, Lisa (although training was not possible) constantly harassed the opposition and held her own, while Rosie and Paige both dominated whichever position they were asked to play – with skill, finesse, vision and ball distribution that could not be faulted. As a result, the forwards of Cherie Stewart, Maddy Nicol, Deb Stewrat and Gemma Wilkins were virtually unstoppable. A combination of Deb’s ball skills, deadly shot and speed of attack, Cherie’s phenomenal speed off the mark and ability to beat all defenders, Maddy’s runs down the left, skill at cutting around players and hard driven crosses, and Gemma’s persistence and determination meant that goals (totalling 91 for the year) were never in short supply. Overall it was a successful and entertaining year that the girls should recall with pride for a job well done. However midway through the season we had all realised that we were premiership contenders. In an instant attitudes changed, confidence came to the fore and you started to believe not only in yourselves but in each other. You believed that you were a champion team, thus leading to you walking away ultimate victors in season 2008. CONGRATULATIONS. We have both played football for many years, and this year will be remembered as one of our top football experiences, it has been an enjoyable and rewarding season. Each of you improved aspects of your game throughout the year and to see the smiles on your faces each week was the most rewarding of all. You were successful in every way – the Grand Final victory simply icing on the cake (and well deserved). The Premiership Winning W15B’s consisted of: Olivia - A girl who just loves her football, softy spoken off the field but on the field the goal keeper that every team needs. Being the eyes for the ten other players on the park and directing their moves with experience beyond her years. Your determination to play the remaining 4 or 5 matches with a busted back will never be forgotten and will always be appreciated. Morgan - A player whose confidence grew every week, and with that her teammates were able to be certain that as a defender no one was going to get past her without a fight. We always said never give up and Morgan is a testament to those words. Sam - Could’ve played anywhere on the field but found that defence was her forte. Always able to force the opposition to the sideline, and always wearing a sly smile every time she shut down the opposition. Amber - Our dependable sweeper, who kept a level head at all times and who took charge of the defensive line up. As the season wore on she was able to give us more attacking options from free kicks and corners, all the while keeping as amused with cheeky comments along the way. Sarah - Our speedy central defender who really just wanted to go forward and attack. Sarah always provided us with options at the back of the field and had the football smarts to creep forward when needed, all the while keeping an eye on opposing forwards. Iavie - Could play in a multitude of positions, and at times did. However she always knew exactly what was required. Her versatility was a real asset to the team, even offering to do the goal keeping duties should need be. Lauren - Another player that could play in multiple positions and always to the best of her ability. A big improver throughout the year who can now add control to her list of football skills, and who can also tick off her first yellow card. Lauren continually showed the desire and hunger for the ball. Holly - Amazed us all at training one night with her ability to dribble the ball between the cones whilst sending texts on her mobile – without even skipping a beat. Able to take on opposition in the middle of the park and release the ball with relative ease, Holly ran her heart out every week and began to show leadership in her role as a central midfielder. Maddie - Another mobile addicted teenager who as the other half of the central midfield duo never ever stopped ticking, surging forward in attack and throwing herself at the opposition in defence. The outbursts of frustration kept us all smiling and importantly Maddie never ever stopped. Emma - Able to play as both a central and a wide midfielder, proved herself to be yet another adaptable talent. Her powerful throw ins became a real benefit in attack and it was great to see your confidence grow and become visible each week. Emma became a vocal player on the pitch which offered great support to her team mates as the season progressed. Marnie - Started the year as a striker but found herself owning the right midfield by seasons end. A very relaxed, confident player who if not challenging the ball would always put herself in the game by communicating and encouraging her teammates. Bernie - Couldn’t have been more relaxed when taking a long range shot at goal. Ever confident with the ball at her feet when taking on and beating the opposition and even more confident when delivering payouts to a particular red headed coach. Without doubt we will all remember the match winning goal in the Grand Final with just seconds remaining on the clock. Greta - Will no doubt remember her debut year for a long time to come. With a natural ability Greta showed a great passion to learn and improve her game at every opportunity. She never ever stopped and now has the knowledge and confidence in herself that her team and coaches had all along. As already mentioned – one of the highlights of our soccer careers has been coaching you all each week. It was an absolute pleasure and so much fun. We scored 18 goals & conceded 10.In the second round we ripped. We scored 22 goals but conceded only 4 & it was the solidness of the defence that gave us the confidence to go on. The second round highlight was the 1-1 against Miranda. That was followed by a hard fought win over Menai at the stadium followed by a tough victory over the Crusaders.7 points from 9 & I said to the girls that we had a good chance at 2nd spot. We continued on & that's where we ended up. The semi final victory over Miranda was our sweetest moment but the grand final effort, in terms of courage was just as good. Everyone played well, trained well ,worked hard & learnt plenty & I can only see this team getting better. I'll go through the players, In goals, Georgia & Kellie were terrific with Georgia really showing huge potential, The defence was outstanding, Ellyse ,Kim, Kristie, Kelly & Kelly were reliable solid, fantastic. The mids, the engine room, Courtney, Laura, Lisa, Alicia, Kiera, Kellie & Angie were all sensational. Up front, is there a better ball player than Bec-I doubt it & Georgia, when she's not in goals causes havoc in the oppositions defence. Top goal scorers I think were Bec & Lisa with 10 each, Alicia with 9 & Kellie with 6. Terrific effort to score so many in an 'A' comp. May I say it has been a real pleasure to coach this team, this group of young ladies. They listened, offered opinions, ideas & turned up to training each week & made my job a pleasure & I say "let's do it again next year !". My player of the year is Lisa Stewart. Great effort ladies; you've had a wonderful year capped off by a thrilling one nil win in the Grand final. Helen's first half goal after a great run from Peta proved to be the winner as we hung on for the rest of the match. We won this year by playing some good football but more importantly coming together as a team, helping each other out and giving 100% every time we played. A quick thumb sketch of the champions: Georgia Takacs: The best goalie going around who, like last year, saved her best game for the grand final. Likes a run out on the field, but we all breath easier when she's between the sticks. Katie Watson: A class act as sweeper who bravely played a few games when she should have been resting. Unfortunately too ill to play in the grand final but her legacy was in the way she taught the others to cover for her. Holly Creighton: Her experience at fullback proved invaluable; always in the right place at the right time. This year added an attacking role to her game which started many of our goals. Elise McLachlan: Had her best year ever as she really grew into the fullback position. A most effective marker, normally targeting the oppositions best striker. Put her body on the line and saved us a number of times in the grand final. Kirsty Bunch-Bozonie: An absolute rock at stopper. Not much gets past Kirsty and if they do; they don't do it again. Incredibly brave who never takes a backward step. Libby Jones. Midfield and one of the real improvers. Libby has always been very fit and runs all day, but this year added some lovely skills to her game. Scored a couple of goals when we really needed them. Bekky Hogan: Midfield. Great to have Bekky back this year. Happy to play anywhere in midfield and by the end of the year was playing strong football. Professionally covered the fullback position when needed. Candice McGregor: Off season purchase and what a good buy. Candice is very determined and won many balls that really had no right to win Unselfishly stuck her hand up for replacement goalie which was well appreciated by the others. Peta Smith. Centre-mid. The engine of the team whose drive and determination was a great spur for the rest of the team. Often heavily marked by the oppostion but always gave more than she got. Jade Beazley. Another member of our tireless midfield who never stopped trying. Often covered up front where her pace always posed a danger. Importantly for team morale, always played with a smile. Belinda Potter. Pots plays left wing where her speed and strength was one of our greatest weapons. Manages to get her head to the ball more than any other player and, when the going got tough, would often be found helping out in defence. Jordie Thomson: Provided the speed on the right wing where she scored some cracking goals but also provided some lovely crosses for many more. Has the best one liners (especially to refs) and looking for a street directory. Helen Fragidakas: Out of retirement this year. Great to have her back and by the end of the season was playing like the Helen of old. Has the sweetest left foot which she used to score some brilliant dead ball goals. Belinda Thwaites: Centre forward. Bel T has the best ball skills which she used to score a heap of goals (including 5 in one half!) and set up plenty more. Quiet and unassuming we realised just how good she was when she wasn't playing. Missy Dillon and Alysha Chappelow. Everywhere. Every side needs a couple of real ream players who are willing to play anywhere when required and are good enough to do it well. Missy's effort as sweeper in the grand final in Katie's absence was the real clincher. Alysha often moved from sweeper to centre forward and everywhere in between without missing a beat. Couldn't do without the pair of them. Thanks to John and Chappo for helping out with coaching, to Michelle and Paul for the managerial duties, to Mick Thwaites for the medical support and to all parents, boyfriends and girlfriends who came and supported each week. We were determined to better that performance and prove to all in the Women’s 30 Competition that there was a competition and the competition heavy weights GP could be beaten. After injecting a few more of the ‘old Berries’ into the squad we looked even stronger and proved it finishing on top of the premiership at the end of the season, defeating GP in both club rounds to gain the minor premiership. GP got their revenge in the final series however, coming out to play at a hectic pace defeating us 1 nil in a torrid tussle in the semi and again 3 -2 in the Grand Final. No fairy tales for the Como girls, but considering we aimed to play for fun, tried to give all a good run and did not have one training session, whilst trying to win as much as we could then the final result does not really matter. Grays Point were simply too committed on the day, which is grand final footy. The 2008 Squad saw awesome performances from the players which are best summed up in personal reflection:The ‘Bear’ or ‘Co” earned her stripes mainly as the ‘Eskimo Queen’ and ‘Dorothy Michaels’ match report writer. Being the “Coach” Co had a balanced season, a ‘Ying Yang’ of moments of brilliance to moments of Gumby’s to keep the side line entertained, whilst she focused on the team line up and performance. Her motivational ‘cliché’s’ often the secret to our success! When she wasn’t scoring the odd goal herself of course. ‘Spare Bear’ or “Mo” was a consistent enforcer scoring high as the ‘Utility Asset’ of the game often. Being the team “Manager” and The cog of the ‘engine room’ helping to direct play forward or direct midfielders back to defend. There is some conjecture however that often it was “Co” who did something well & “Mo” got the credit, or visa versa, but whoever it was it was determined and effective and led us to many fine victories. Maxine Brewer was ‘Not the only one’ to be newly inducted to the team in 2008. After she ‘talent spotted’ our side at the one night we actually went to training in 2007, Maxine proved a formidable force & versatile in the many positions she covered. She was fast up the wings and could cross the ball setting up many plays, scored a few, along with a few Gumby moments mixed in to make her a valued member of the squad. Debbie Crowther. There is an old saying “It’s the quiet one’s you have to watch” and ‘Debstar’ didn’t say a lot but she was a determined force on the pitch, often in a never say die moment. She would tackle anything in front of her, sometimes even the corner post, but ‘Debstar ‘found skills this season that even she did not know she had and has to be one of our most improved of the season. Meegan Cuell or “Harry” was another newcomer commencing her 2nd season of soccer ever! Harry was a natural. Chasing everything, tackling everyone,’ Harry’ never gave in and hustle and bustled her way through every game creating goals and scoring them alike. Scoring against Grays Point is something people can never achieve in 20 years, and Harry set the record books to get a goal in the round 2 match. Harry proved she can listen and learn when she scored her best goal, with an almost over head scissor kick first time volley against Georges River. Quite simply it was a pearler and so is she and easily a contender for player of the year!! Bronwyn Gray, Being the ‘big bird’ of the back line, Bronwyn picked up where she left off on last years Grand Final winning the Dame of the Game. Winning the ‘utility asset’ many times this year Bronwyn is sure to hand over the mantle of ‘Gumby’ of the year 2007. Her big match performances a big part of why she is so vital to our team. Vanessa Gray or ‘Ness” was always quick with a joke or to light up a smoke… but wait…. That was last year and in 2008 it was Ness who was on fire!! After giving up the bungers Ness could last longer than 5 minutes and was often brilliant dominating the right midfield and wing, blotting opposition players out of game contention. Rowena Harris or “the Cucumber” was the rock of Gibraltar at the back as always. The backs rarely got the ball in some games but when it came Rowie was the VKG. Her communication timely, informative, and sometimes edging a little sarcasm in good humor. Rowie was always there to be as “Cool as a cucumber’ dissolving attacking raids and setting up a counter attack. Nicole Hollands the ‘Chrystal’ of the team was determined to get through a season without breaking something. The only thing that could stop her was that vial flu that kept her out of the semi final. Despite some “ours” and some “there’s’ goals Nic played strongly in the back line and showed the forwards she still had it as striker when playing up front. Nicole was reliably consistent especially in the ‘big games’ and an important ‘utility asset‘ to our team. Veronica Jordan or “Ronnie” retired from the A team to aid our mission. Despite being wounded in many games before kick off due to her rugby career, Ronnie rarely disappointed on the pitch. Sometimes she even mixed up the football codes… ask Spencer from GP. Ronnie could kick goals from the sideline, her crosses and corners giving us many opportunities to score, or air swing, depending on the day. Kath Jones unleashed many new talents in 2008 and improved on last years’ effort opening up the scoring in the round 2 clash with Competition favorites GP. Kath played goals for a few matches also and put those football goal kicking skills on display with her goal kicks when she was not showing off the catching skills. Donna Lewis or ‘The Don’ was our Sherman tank in the backline intimidating the opposition many a game. The Don showed off her many years of experience on the field with precision passes, tackling and chasing whilst all the while never giving on her chase. Kathy McIntyre the original “Big Bird” was back to her best form in goals and out. This season saw her on the pitch more than in her cage and she showed her true forward potential scoring her first ever hat trick with oh so almost another late in the season. Kath in the Goals was a force field and an intimidating last soldier to any opposition attacking forward. Julie “Guffy” McGuffie earned a new nickname with her “Tiger” like performances. Leading the goal scoring on 28 goals despite missing a few games, Guffy proved her years of experience enabled her to put away the numerous ‘imperfect’ passes we gave her to make us all look good. Her best goal of the year a screaming first time volley from the 18 off a Ronnie cross where she struck it so cleanly it near broke the net and the keeper it almost collected on the way in. Julie Norris or ‘Noddy’ was ‘absolutely fabulous’ in the mid field setting up many goals with her determination and skill in the mid field and running relentlessly up the right wing. Showing more dance moves than ‘ginger rogers’, Noddy bedazzled her way through the middle of the pitch and sent the ball sailing goal ward to set up many goals scoring a few along the way. Cassie “Tweety” Shearer came back from injury and was soon scoring goals to easily be our 2nd highest goal scorer on 25. Cassie’s goals were generally spectacular as when she is on her game and hits it… it stays hit and many a keeper found it hard to stop her ‘bend it like beckam’ efforts. Cassie’s corners also made the rest of us look good as they landed right where they should and we managed to get something on them to get them in. W30 A2 P 18 Carol Turner Position: 4th - Finalists W D L GF GA 9 3 6 35 34 Pts 30 As the time of writing, the competition is yet to be decided. What has been decided, is that the lovely ladies from W30A2 have won the BRONZE medal, the second year running. If nothing else, we are consistent. A great year has been marked by lows - a number of injuries to players, some season ending and highs - with some players making a comeback. There were many games when we were struggling to get a full team, but with true courage, the team played on. The only statistic to report is that until late in the season, we had only lost to the 2 teams playing in the 2008 grand final. A fabulous effort. Unfortunately, this statistic was spoilt when we lost to Gymea2, a team at the bottom of the table. We turned up to play, but forgot to switch the on button, then we lost the last game to Gymea1. Then…… after finishing in 4th place, we played the semi final against 3rd placed Gymea1. We played like Champions, coming back from 1-3 down, to level at 3-3 by full time. In extra time, we put on a magical display resulting in us winning 4-3. Fantastic effort on the field, as well as the post match celebrations! Thanks everyone for being such a great bunch of girls. See you in ’09! The Team Alissa: A very welcome addition to the team, after being away for a few years. Alissa picked up from where she left off, spectacular saves – a great goal keeper. Carol: A dazzling forward, who always has the opposition on their toes. A niggly calf injury hampered Carol’s finals preparation, but she courageously played on and played her heart out. Clare: The party girl of the team. Clare had a fantastic year, dependable in all areas of the game, but unable to break into the forwards this season. We needed Clare in defence, but don’t be surprised if she makes a move for a forward position next year. Forwards, be warned…. Danielle: The season didn’t start well for Danielle, with a serious knee injury in the opening game against Grays Point. True to form, Danielle recovered, returning to play fantastically as always. A complete and dependable player. Deb: A great comeback following the birth of Luke at the end of last season. Always dangerous in attack, ever reliable in any position played and great ball skills which resulted in Deb scoring some fantastic goals. Donna: A few injuries throughout the season didn’t stop our Donna. Donna played hard and always put her body on the line. Although not available for selection in the final, we can’t wait for the new Donna next season. Gail: Lightning fast goal scorer, who beat backlines time and time again. A great goal scoring year for Gail, who was the only player to get a hat trick. Janelle: Very reliable midfielder, Janelle played where ever asked. Despite picking up a couple of injuries, Janelle recovered and was rewarded with some great goals. Janine: A big return to the game, after being away for a number of years. Janine’s still got it, an adaptable player who scored a spectacular goal, much to everyone’s delight. Jenny: You wouldn’t know its Jen’s 2nd year playing soccer and 1st on the field. A fantastic transition from goal keeper to a versatile player, in attack or defence. Jill: Jill started the season knowing that she wouldn’t see it to the end. Jill and family are overseas for a year. We hope she returns and picks up where she left off, scoring loads of fabulous goals. Kathy: Super fit and great defender who runs all day. Kathy often played without substitution, taking on anyone and she just kept on running. She earns the title of the fittest in the team. Kelly: A great year, topped off by some great goals. Kelly runs all day and is a competitor for the title of lightning runner of the team. Kristen: Reliable and fearless defender whose season ended early with a knee injury that needed surgery. Kristen was sorely missed. We hope ’09 is a better season. Libby: What can you say! Not much….except the team matriarch keeps on turning up every year, chasing that elusive premiership! Nessie: The stronghold of the midfield, reliable under pressure. Shame about the Pinkerton shots on goal, one of them has to go in soon! Rachel: The Marquee signing in 2008, making a spectacular return to the game just weeks after the birth of Edward. Too bad the season wasn’t longer for Rachel, she was just warming up. We hope to see her back in ’09! Coach: Mick Perkins Manager: Libby Pinkerton ..and the POSER goes to ....
