These drugs are often prescribed to help prevent and treat blood clots in the legs and lungs, atrial fibrillation, and following heart-valve replacement therapy. According to Mary Muth, APNP, the advanced practice nurse working in ProHealth Care’s onsite medical clinics, “Everyone responds differently to anticoagulants so it’s necessary to monitor each individual’s response to the medication carefully.” New program will help residents monitor and manage their care Factors including general health, diet, use of other medications, and physical activity can all affect the body’s response to an anticoagulant. Routine blood testing is the only way to determine if an individual is getting the proper amount of medication. When individuals visit a Regency medical clinic, a small drop of blood will be taken from a finger and tested. Mary will measure the time it takes for the liquid portion (plasma) of the blood to clot. The results are reported as an international normalized ratio (INR) and are used to adjust the medication dose if needed. Test results, changes in medication dosage, and any advice given is recorded electronically and is available for your physician to review the day of your visit. Mary will contact your physician directly if there are any concerns. Anticoagulation services The ProHealth Care medical clinics offer: • INR measurement (immediate results) • Medication dose adjustment if needed • Education and resources on medications, diet, and lifestyle To take advantage of onsite anticoagulation services, residents must be under the care of a ProHealth physician. If you are and would like to use our services, please contact your physician or current anticoagulation or Coumadin clinic and inform them that your care will be managed by the Regency medical clinic.
