BURLINGTON TORONTO
A message from the President...
This time of the year always brings mixed feelings to ACE staff and coaches
- as we wind down the academy year, get ready to to bid "farewell" to our
graduating senior players, and start embracing the summer season.
The competitive summer season has already started - and congrats to the
ACE players that had strong results in the first series of national selection
events (see results below). In addition lots of tournament activity - especially for younger
competitive players - has taken place at both ACE Toronto Tennis City and ACE Burlington.
We also thank Andre Parent - Tennis Canada's Montreal National Center Fitness Coach for his
valuable visit to ACE Burlington.
SUMMER
2016
Summer Camps at both ACE locations are less than three weeks away- and as we gear up
our preparations - we also sense the anticipation from many of our players. Intensive
refurbishing efforts are taking place at Cedar Springs Sports Club - under the new ownership so the facilities promise to be much improved for all members.
On behalf of ACE Tennis, we would like to thank all players, parents, and families for a
wonderful year, and we look forward to seeing many of you in the summer.
Sincerely,
Doug Burke
ACE TENNIS President

ACE Toronto was very fortunate as ACE alumni Raheel Manji came in and paid a visit to the
National/Provincial group. Raheel was in town for a few days working with ACE Toronto Head
Coach Irfan Shamasdin on the clay courts gearing up to play a few semi-pro tournaments in
the
summer. Raheel took some time after practice to answer various questions from the players
about obtaining scholarships and his past experience as a junior player in the OTA. Raheel
will be entering his 3rd year at Indiana University in September, as he is an integral part of
the
team.Good luck to Raheel in the summer and his upcoming year at Indiana!

2010 TEAM BURLINGTON
In order to be able to offer a program like the 2010 Team program, we had
to schedule the program as early as 7 am on a Saturday morning in
Burlington - and head coach Gabe Radulescu [pictured] had to depend on
the tremendous help from all the parents who committed to participating in
this 30 week FREE introductory experience. 23 players born in 2010 and
their parents committed to the program and the attendance was
extraordinary. The program offered children and their parents an
opportunity to learn what being on the courts is all about, finding their hidden
talents both as little tennis players and coaches.

ACE offers 10 daily major programs from the introductory Progressive 1 program to the
International Team which consists of many of Canada's top young players. The ACE
system is developed to provide opportunities for children to begin playing the game as early
as 4 years old. After players "graduate" from this program they can either pursue the
"Competitive" or "Progressive/ Recreational" stream based on their level and the family's
commitment.

FITNESS WHIZ VISIT
On June 1st, as a part of Tennis Canada's
program of assisting TDC's - Tennis
Development Centers - ACE Burlington
was payed a visit by Andre Parent - the
long time head fitness coach at Tennis
Canada's National Center in Montreal.
Andre has worked with numerous leading
Canadian players over the years - and
was able to give us some valuable and
interesting insights into his work with current
top Canadian juniors such as recent
French Open Junior Runner Up Felix AugerAliassime.
As the Fitness component has always
been an integral part of ACE's programs discussions were held regarding our
approach to fitness, and Andre conducted
fitness sessions on court with two of our
strong young players Rachel Kryzak and
Sarah Liu. ACE Burlington's Fitness Coach
Derek Bennett said, " We had a great visit
from Andre Parent - he stressed the
importance of improving coordination in the
physical development of young players,
and demonstrated many drills which are
effective in this regard. I will stay in contact
with Andre - as his insight will be a valuable resource for us.Thanks a lot Andre ".

COACH'S CORNER
As coaches, we do a lot of reading to help further educate ourselves and I
thought, why not share some of these great articles with everyone else.
Especially for you parents out there who always try to learn more about tennis
and why your child is developing specific skills. Below is an article on training
movement. In my opinion, movement is one of the most crucial factors in tennis.
You can have great strokes, but if you can't get to the ball those strokes are
B randon
Alguire
useless. Every great athlete moves exceptionally well no matter what sport they
play. Why do they move so well? As the article points out, because they
anticipate what's going to happen before it actually occurs. Have a look at the
article and also check out the link to a YouTube video of Christiano Ronaldo and
see how good his anticipation is. You will be blown away.
TRAINING MOVEMENT
Training movement isn't only about speed and agility, it's about teaching the athlete to
anticipate and react quicker. Believe it or not, the most important element in creating a great
mover in sport is actually developed and trained between the ages of 4 and 12. And what is
this great characteristic found in the best athletes you ask? Anticipation. Ever watched a
player who doesn't visually appear to have the physique to be athletically quick, but
somehow seems to get to every ball or be in the right place all the time? Ever wondered,
besides other great attributes, why Roger Federer, soccer star Christiano Ronaldo or squash
wizard Ramy Ashour, are at the top of their sports? Why is it that they seem to be in the right
place at the right time?
Here's why:
The best movers on the court, not only have great footwork and movement skills, but also
have the ability to read the game and anticipate. They see the play before it happens.
Even though the required muscle and properly trained movement patterns are essential in
developing a great mover, it's the athlete's ability to react and their reflexes that determine
just how well they will move in their chosen sport.
Simply put, all movement starts with the brain telling the body that it needs to move. The
neuromuscular system or 'brain to body wiring' as I like to call it, needs to be continually
trained.
Good anticipation and response skills are essential qualities to being a good mover on a
tennis court. Knowing the opponent's next shot, the one that's coming back, allows players to
move early and into the correct position to be ready.
The key to a good mover in sport is that they react faster. They are earlier into position and
ready. Reaction and anticipation exercises should be included into all movement programs,
not just athletic based skills.
These skills are developed best in the 'skill hungry' years (between ages 4 and 12). This is
when an athlete is more teachable, pliable and receptive to acquiring the skill. The later an
athlete is left to acquire reaction and anticipation skills in their development, the less chance
that athlete is going to be a great mover.
It's highly recommended that a coach or trainer develops and works on these motor skills in
their kids' sessions by including lots of games that involve challenging the child's ABC's:
Agility, Balance and Coordination skills (catching and throwing).
