CONFERENCE CENTER
Season XVII brings Riverside Center’s patrons an expanded
schedule of no less than seven exciting and acclaimed theatrical
productions, beginning with our first non-musical play, Steel
Magnolias. Following Steel Magnolias, the “musical lineup”
begins with our high-energy revival of the ever-popular West
Side Story. Then, for country music fans, Hank Williams: Lost
Highway spotlights the immortal music of the legendary American
singer. British humor rocks the Riverside stage in Monty Python’s
Spamalot, the musical spoof based on the 1975 film, Monty Python
and the Holy Grail. For the Christmas holiday season, nothing
could be more festive than the return (by popular request) of It’s A
Wonderful Life. To begin the new year, it’s a sparkling production
of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a thrilling and sophisticated
theatrical experience showcasing many of the composer’s signature
songs. Rounding out our 2014-2015 season will be the hilarious
musical version of Dolly Parton’s hit movie 9 to 5, with the expected
return of Sally Struthers to our stage!
Our ever-increasing circle of awareness has attracted performers
from the Broadway stage to national-tour casts, and noted musical
theater critics have cited Riverside Center as “consistently
demonstrating high-quality, professional-caliber productions”
and “one of the best places to see musicals in the D.C. area.”
Independent of government subsidies and blessed with a dedicated
resident staff, we are widely recognized as a major regional
performing arts center.
Maintaining our commitment to the vibrancy of our community,
Riverside Center contributes extensively to educational and
charitable organizations, as well as scholarships to deserving
students furthering their careers in the performing arts. The
Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce has honored us
with its coveted Business of the Year award.
Our “sister” organization, the Riverside Foundation for the
Performing Arts, an IRS Code Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
charitable foundation, has participated in a variety of fundraising
and educational activities for area service ministries since its
establishment in 2007. Under major grants from PNC Bank and The
Community Foundation, as well as generous contributions from
the general public, the Foundation continues its seven-year history
of offering annual summer performing arts camps free of charge to
economically disadvantaged children and youth.
We are immensely grateful to Pohanka Hyundai as the official
sponsor of our musical offerings for the fifth consecutive year. The
Pohanka family of dealerships in Fredericksburg and Northern
Virginia has long been associated with tangible investment in
community enhancement. Thanks, Tim Pohanka, for your ongoing
partnership in nurturing and sustaining our venture!
The Stafford County Office of Economic Development has also
significantly assisted in underwriting a portion of our tourism
marketing over the past decade. Many thanks to its talented and
supportive staff!
We trust that, as a patron of the performing arts, you too will help
to increase the public awareness of Riverside Center by your
personal “word-of-mouth” endorsements, and, if possible, financial
investment. Perhaps your business would consider sponsorship of
one of our Children’s Theater presentations. Also, tax-deductible
contributions to the Riverside Foundation are always welcome.
Please feel free to contact any of our management staff for
suggestions on how you can participate in Riverside Center’s
outreach. We hope to greet and interact with you on numerous
occasions in the coming months.

Director’s Notes
The theme for It’s A Wonderful Life! is pretty clear:
Love the life you have, because it’s the only one you
get. In a world that moves so fast that it can pass us
by even while we’re waiting for the bus, we can lose
ourselves in thinking about what might have been, just
like George Bailey.
It’s easy to get lost, especially in the world of show
business. There’s a lot of alone time, late nights,
constant traveling, uprooting your life for months at
a time, fast meals, friendships that come and go too
quickly. In that world, loneliness can consume us. I found out years ago
while traveling that it isn’t only those of us in show business who share
these feelings. Everyone, everywhere, feels these emotions—teachers,
doctors, cashiers, presidents, fathers, mothers, friends.....EVERYONE! So,
I learned to think about the good things in my life and be thankful for all
that I have around me, however large or small. Yes, we all make wishes and
set goals for ourselves as we grow up, and yes, those wishes and goals can
be achieved.
But realistically, sometimes things don’t always turn out the way we wished
or planned. Do we have a fate? Do we have a “set” path to follow? Who
knows? George Bailey lived in his dreams. He was so hopeful to see the
world and wanted to accomplish everything he set out to do, but his life
took a different turn. Sometimes LIFE intervenes, and we must make new
decisions and new choices.
As I was directing this story, something made me realize once again that I
need to open my eyes and look around, just as George was able to do with
the help of Clarence. Many of us have a special person in our lives to help
us with that journey, but some do not. All I can say is try not to focus on the
negative. Sometimes we spend so much of our time in this world worrying
about diseases spreading, cashing checks, becoming powerful, acing that
test, winning that game, that we lose ourselves and forget to focus on the
wonderful things we do have.
All life is beautiful, and magical, and important. This is life, here and
now, and it’s the only life we have. So let’s make it wonderful! HAPPY
HOLIDAYS!!!

Production Staff
PATRICK A’HEARN (Producing Artistic Director) marks his fourth season
as a member of the Riverside Center management staff, affording a new
dimension and broader outreach to our marketing and artistic endeavors. Mr.
A’Hearn was a member of the original Broadway cast of Les Misérables, and
can be heard on its original cast recording. He has appeared on Broadway
and in the national tours of Les Misérables, Chicago (with Chita Rivera and
Ben Vereen), The Phantom of the Opera, The King and I (starring Rudolph
Nureyev), The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber (with Michael Crawford), and
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (with Andy Gibb), as well
as in the acclaimed Forbidden Broadway in New York. He was featured in the
world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem Variations, performed
as Marvin Hamlisch’s principal vocalist in Mr. Hamlisch’s Concert Tour,
and appeared in concert with Byron Janis, at the Aspen Music Festival, and
in concert tours throughout Europe. Additional principal portrayals include
Freddy in My Fair Lady with the Portland Opera, Edmonton Opera, and
the European tour starring Maximillian Schell; Mr. Snow in Carousel with
the Minnesota Opera, and the title role in The Student Prince with Jerome
Hines and Christine Andreas. A featured soloist in Broadway Pops programs
with major symphonic orchestras throughout the U.S., Patrick has released
two nationally distributed CDs: Patterns of the Heart and By George!—The
Music of George Gershwin. He assisted Trevor Nunn and John Caird in the
staging of the first national tour of Les Misérables. At Riverside Center, he
has appeared in an Actors Equity Guest Artist capacity as Harold Hill in
The Music Man (2006), the Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (200708), and the Phantom in Phantom (2012) for which performances he was
recently honored by D.C. Metro Theater Arts as Best Performance by an
Actor in a Musical 2012 and by the Maryland Theater Guide Reader’s Poll
as Best Actor in a Musical 2012. His Riverside directing credits include
42nd Street, Evita, Into the Woods, Chicago, The Best Little Whorehouse
in Texas, Hello, Dolly!, Dreamgirls, Cabaret, The Full Monty, Gypsy, and
our highly acclaimed 17-week presentation of Les Misérables, for which
Patrick received the 2013 award for Best Director of a Musical from D.C.
Metro Theater Arts and the Maryland Theater Guide Reader’s Poll.
CHRISTOPHER NOFFKE (Director) is an award-winning east-coast
choreographer and director and a frequent contributor to Riverside’s
mainstage productions. His last adventure here was as associate director/
choreographer for Monty Python’s Spamalot. Previously he directed White
Christmas and Footloose and choreographed Gypsy, Dreamgirls, The Full
Monty, Hello, Dolly!, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, and Chicago.
His other recent credits include director/choreographer for Warp Speed: A
SciFi Parody Musical (Midtown International Theatre Festival, NYC) which
earned him awards for Best Director and Best Choreographer, assistant
director/choreographer for BARE (The York Theatre, NYC) and Andrew
Lippa’s The Wild Party (The Secret Theatre, NYC), director of Season’s
Greetings and Yes, Virginia and choreographer for Little Women (Kentucky
Repertory Theatre, Horse Cave, KY), and choreographer/dancer on The
Jerry Springer Show. Christopher also directed several plays for three
festivals in New York City, one of which won awards in the Best Play,
Best Actress, and Best Actor categories. Additional credits include the NYC
2011 Choreographers Canvas, resident choreographer for The Naples
Dinner Theatre in Florida, and director/choreographer for Northern Lights
in Wisconsin, where he contributed to such shows as Tommy, My Fair
Lady, Victor, Victoria, Anything Goes, Mame, Pal Joey, and Sugar!
JASON J. MICHAEL (Music Director) is a veteran music director at
Riverside, having supervised such acclaimed Dinner Theater and Children’s
Theater productions as Monty Python’s Spamalot, West Side Story, Gypsy,
Les Misérables, Legally Blonde, The Full Monty, Phantom, Cabaret,
Dreamgirls, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Pinkalicious, and High
School Musical. Regionally, he directed seven national children’s musical
theater tours for American Family Theatre, and has been guest music
director at both the Fulton Opera House (Lancaster, PA) and the Ephrata
Performing Arts Center (Ephrata, PA). Most recently, he contributed songs
to Warp Speed: A Sci-Fi Parody Musical which played at the Midtown
International Theatre Festival in New York City this past August. His
spiritual, All Aboard: The Ballad of Harriet Tubman, is published by
Theodore Presser Co. Jason holds an MFA in Theater/Pedagogy from
Virginia Commonwealth University, an MA in Theater from Villanova
University, a BA in Music from Susquehanna University, and a BA in Theater
from Kutztown University. A faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth
University, he currently teaches directing and speech, and also serves as
Music Director, Adult Choir Director, and Hand Chimes Director for the
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg. Jason would like to
thank Patrick and Christopher for their friendship, and both Patrick and
Dino for the many opportunities he continues to enjoy at Riverside. He
also thanks his mother, the Furey family, and his wife Nancy and son John
Adams for all their love and support.
Anthony CantrelL (Technical Director) is proud to be working with
Riverside Theater again. This is his first production as a technical director,
but our audiences have recently seen his outstanding lighting design work in
Monty Python’s Spamalot. Previously Anthony worked at Kings Dominion
as an entertainment manager with RWS, Moonmax Productions, and All
Wheel Sports. He was also lighting director for The Chuck Marhena Center
in Princeton, West Virginia. Anthony studied acting and directing at Concord
University before focusing on the technical aspect of the theater. He greatly
looks forward to a bright future ahead at Riverside Dinner Theater.
Kathryn Moncure (Lighting Design) is honored to premier her
first design at Riverside Dinner Theater in It’s A Wonderful Life! Working
as a lighting technician for Riverside over the past two years, she helped
stage over twenty shows, and now is thrilled to take the design and creative
responsibilities for this production. In addition to her contributions at
Riverside, Kathryn has also worked for AMC’s television show TURИ as a
properties intern while retaining her background in computer coding. She
would like to thank her family and friends for their support, and hopes that
she can prove herself a far better designer than an autobiographer.
CAROLE ANNE HALL (Production Stage Manager) joins the Riverside
Dinner Theater production staff for the first time as stage manager for It’s
A Wonderful Life! Carole is a 2013 graduate (BA in Theater) from The
University of Mary Washington here in Fredericksburg. Her previous stage
management credits include Klein Theater (UMW) productions of The
Tempest, Talking With, Moon over Buffalo, Summer and Smoke, and Romeo
and Juliet, and Studio 115 productions of Zoo Story, Four Dogs and a Bone,
and Reckless.
BEN WALSH (Resident Production Stage Manager) joined the Riverside
Production Staff with SPAMALOT. Ben is a proud graduate of Howard
Community College (James W. Rouse Scholars Program, AA degree)
and the University of Kentucky (BA degree) where he managed two
undergraduate productions, Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Seagull.
His regional credits include Forever Plaid, A Christmas Carol, Same Place,
Another Time, Cinderella, Spring Awakening, Little Shop Of Horrors, The
Submission, and Over The Tavern at Olney Theatre Center (Olney, MD);
Urinetown, Seussical, John & Jen, and The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee at Red Branch Theatre Company (Columbia, MD); H.M.S.
Pinafore at Victorian Lyric Opera Company (Rockville, MD); and I Am My
Own Wife at Rep Stage (Howard Community College, Columbia, MD).
CAROLE SHRADER (Company Manager) celebrates her fourth year
in this critical position after having served at Riverside Center in nearly
every theatrical capacity over past seasons—as actor, backstage technician,
properties manager, Children’s Theater show director, and Stage Manager
for both Children’s Theater and mainstage productions. Carole holds
a BFA in Theater Management from Wright State University in Dayton,
Ohio, and following college graduation was active with community theater
productions in the USA and overseas. The entire Shrader family has become
a part of the Riverside Center family, with daughters Hannah and Rachel
and their father frequently seen both onstage and backstage.
STEFANNIE SMITH (Set Design/Dresser) Over the past three years,
Stefannie’s outstanding set decorating handiwork has been seen in Riverside
Center’s productions of West Side Story, Anything Goes, Phantom, The Sound
of Music, The Full Monty, Legally Blonde, Ring of Fire, Les Misérables,
White Christmas, Gypsy, and Forever Plaid. Her favorite accomplishment
thus far was building the massive barricade set for Les Misérables. She has
also designed, decorated, and constructed sets locally for the Lake of the
Woods Players, Stage Door Productions, and the Fredericksburg Theatre
Ensemble, as well as for Brock Road Elementary and Ni River Middle
Schools. Stefannie’s “extracurricular” passion for acting and singing has
blossomed in mainstage and Children’s Theater roles at Riverside and in
community stage and film productions. Stefannie expresses great thanks
to the late Ron Wehman and to Patrick A’Hearn for giving her a place and
the opportunities to flex her creative muscles both on stage and behind the
scenes. She also thanks her wonderful husband, Randy, for his unwavering
support and true love.
GAYE LAW (Costume Coordination) has participated with the Riverside
costume team since Patrick A’Hearn persuaded her to produce “a few”
costumes for our 2009 presentation of Evita. Awed by her creative and
productive talents, we solicited her efforts for 2010’s Into the Woods, and
she has since followed as chief costume designer/coordinator for Hairspray,
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and the multi-faceted wardrobes
for Hello, Dolly!, Dreamgirls, Cabaret, Anything Goes, Phantom, The
Sound of Music, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Full Monty, Ring of Fire, Les
Misérables, White Christmas, and West Side Story. Many thanks to Patrick
and Ron (posthumously) for these opportunities and for their never-ending
encouragement and support. Most of all—huge THANK YOUs to my
amazing hubby, Dave, and to my beautiful and talented daughter, Becca—
for putting up with my messy and time-consuming hobby!
KYLIE CLARK (Properties Coordination) has served as Riverside
Center’s properties mistress since our 2005 production of Kiss Me, Kate.
Kylie holds a BA in Theater from George Mason University and an MA in
Music Theater from the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
During her two years abroad while earning her MA, she had the good fortune
to design and create specialized properties and stage effects for the critically
acclaimed Off-West-End (London) production of John Harrigan’s Cirxus.
Among her favorite Riverside property creations are the spitting camel for
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the bust sculpture (with
removable nose) for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,
the Angelette Brigade “doll ensemble” for The Best Little Whorehouse in
Texas, and every item in the Waiter’s Gallop number for Hello, Dolly! Kylie
would like to share her appreciation with all the people at Riverside who
have lent their expertise to enhancing her projects.
