Thanks to enormous support from the community –
The 477 professionals at Stairways Behavioral Health provided mental health services
to 8,490 adults and children in Erie and Crawford counties. We hope you share our
pride in these unique 2009 Community Outreach accomplishments:
Fighting Stigma
Stairways Behavioral Health distributed a record 37,000 copies of UP Magazine through
outreach to clients, mental health professionals, college students and community members. This free publication connects readers to resources and information so they can
become as comfortable talking about a mental health disorder as they are about heart
disease or diabetes.
Getting Back to Work
Stairways affiliate, Opportunities Unlimited of Erie, provides contract employment as
well as supported employment services for disabled individuals interested in returning
to employment in the community. As a Social Security Administration designated Employment Network, and in collaboration with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation,
Opportunities Unlimited of Erie helped 229 reach their employment goals.
Fairweather Lodge: Promoting Best-Practices
Stairways organized and hosted the 25th Anniversary National Conference of The Coalition for Community Living (CCL), parent organization of The Fairweather Lodge
program. The Fairweather Lodge is a residential and vocational community program
providing opportunities for individuals diagnosed with persistent psychiatric conditions.
Raising Awareness for Mental Wellness and Suicide Prevention
Stairways brought Alison Malmon to Erie to speak with hundreds of local college
and university students. Malmon is the founder of Active Minds Inc., a Washington, DC based nonprofit organization that advocates mental wellness on college
campuses nationwide. A culmination of Malmon’s multiple-day visit was the
2009 Out of the Darkness Community Walk, attended by nearly 150 people to
memorialize loved ones, support survivors, and raise awareness.

Family Connections Family Support
With help from dedicated volunteers, Stairways launched the Family Connections support group, providing regular group meetings and educational events
for people looking for encouragement, answers and a welcoming place to share
concerns. Family Connections is open to anyone who wants to understand and
assist a loved one with their mental health care challenges.

Hope is Real
IntroducingRebecca Debelak
Eleven years ago, Rebecca Debelak admitted herself to a hospital and was diagnosed with major depression and
anxiety disorder. She had been struggling for some time and self-medicating with alcohol, which compounded her
problems. After a lifetime in the workforce, Rebecca found herself out of work. The father of their two children left
the country, taking the children with him.
Rebecca needed help. “I was that person,” she says, “curled up in the fetal
position in the corner of the doctor’s office.” Stairways was there to help.
“I live in Erie today because of Stairways,” reveals Rebecca. Though her
family lives closer to Pittsburgh, she made the difficult decision to stay here
following her hospitalization. Rebecca realized the care she needed to get
better was here at Stairways. “They took me in, got me the help and the
therapy I needed and got me back on my feet.”
Inspiring
Today, Rebecca celebrates her recovery.
Stable and taken off all medications,
Rebecca also marks 10 years of sobriety.
And Rebecca is back to work - at Stairways - turning her
talent for the arts into part-time employment, teaching
at the Center for Arts & Humanities. A dedicated
and steadfastly dependable employee, those who
know and work with Becky also appreciate her
kindness and deep caring for others.
Rebecca is also a strong advocate of
Stairways and never turns down a chance
to speak of her recovery. “I absolutely
owe where I am now to Stairways,”
asserts Rebecca. But what sets her
apart is Rebecca’s resolve to not let
mental illness or hardship keep her
from finding her way back to a full life.
Recipient of the Stairways 2009
Hope is Real award, Rebecca has put
hope into action in her own life, and
has made a positive difference in
the lives of so many others.
