Don’s talents were many; his natural wit and unrelenting puns as alter
ego Charlie Farquharson were balanced by his insightful interviews during
his stint as host of CBC Radio’s Morningside. As an actor, he shared the
stage with the likes of Lorne Greene, William Shatner, Maggie Smith, and
Christopher Plummer. Here in Charlottetown, Don is revered as co-creator
of Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™.
In 1956, Don was recruited by producer Norman Campbell to fill a 90minute TV spot; it was Mr. Harron’s idea to create a musical version of
Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery’s beloved novel, which he had
been reading to his children. In 1965, Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ found a home on the Confederation Centre stage where it has since
set a Guinness Record as the longest running annual musical in the world.
Don died on January 17. He was 90. Don leaves three daughters, Martha,
Mary and Kelley; and grandchildren, and his partner, Claudette Gareau,
who continues to spend summers on PEI.
