Jundo Gregory Gibbs I hope that 2016 will be a good year for all of you. I hope that it will be a peaceful year for all of us. My wife, Kyoko, and our boys, Sho and Ren, are very grateful for the warmth you have all shown us, and your many kindnesses. Although I write this for a January issue of our newsletter, I am actually composing it in mid-December. I have been listening to my favorite holiday song, “Happy Christmas” on a newly purchased C.D. player in the temple residence. The refrain of the song, by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, is often playing in the back of my mind: “A very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear.” Terrorist events such as the shootings in San Bernadino in early December last year, and the mass shootings at Umpqua Community College two months before cannot help but trouble us. As Buddhists we promote peace. As human beings we long for peace and security. Buddhists are content to share the world with people of differing beliefs, persons of other religions. It is not our task to convert the whole world to our belief system, and I hope that we can continue to make that clear in 2016. Buddhist tradition and Judaic tradition both speak of excessive desires and hatred as intoxicants. Those motivated by hatred are drunk on the wine of ignorance, greed and anger. We do not hate them. We just hope that they will sober up, and learn to be accepting of others, as we are taught to be. Some of us will enjoy a cup of holiday cheer for New Years. New Years is the most common day for an American to consume alcohol. In moderation, that will do most of us no harm at all. However, greed and hatred are intoxicants we should renounce altogether. If we are not greedy or hate-filled, perhaps we will not be seen as a threat to others. Perhaps our accepting attitude and willingness to share this world with others is something we can actively promote in 2016. We do not mean others harm, no matter how different their religious beliefs or political ideology is from our own. We wish well to all. As John and Yoko put it “…A Happy New Year. Let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear.” Altar Flower and Osonae Fund We will be starting a fund for the Altar Flowers and Osonae. If you would like to make a contribution to this fund, please send a check made out to Pasadena Buddhist Temple and write Flowers on the memo line. We will acknowledge your donation in the monthly Hikari. We are hoping that our Sangha would like to contribute to this fund which will be maintained by Mrs. Gibbs. If anyone would like to chair a service, please contact Dona Mitoma (818-568-9123) who is our Religious Chair and handles the scheduling of service chairs. Pasadena Buddhist Temple • HIKARI • JanFeb, 2016 New Course on Buddhism A three-class course on the Introduction to the Basics of Buddhism will be offered the second, third and fourth weeks of January 2016. These classes will be conducted here at our temple. Each week the material will be new, covering the basics in Buddhist thought and practice, and touch the high points in Buddhist history. Please consider attending these classes. There will be no charge however, for those who wish, a donation of $5 per class attended is recommended. Class 1: Wed. Jan 13 @ 7:30 PM and Thurs. Jan 14 @ 10:30 am Class 2: Wed. Jan 20 @ 7:30 PM and Thurs. Jan 21 @ 10:30 am Class 3: Wed. Jan 27 @ 7:30 PM and Thurs. Jan 28 @ 10:30 am Note: The content for this special run of classes will be identical for the Wednesday and Thursday class within the same week. Private Family Memorial Service Schedule There is a system of private memorial observances for members of a given family who gather at a temple or home in memory of a deceased member of the family. According to Jodo Shinshu tradition the memorial dates are: 7th day after death, 49th day, 100th day, 1st cycle (Isshuki), 3rd cycle, 7th cycle, 13th cycle, 17th cycle, 25th cycle, 33rd cycle, 50th cycle and 100th cycle. According to the traditional way of counting, the yearly cycles begin with the Meinichi or death date as 1 (one). But since the Japanese count the day of death as the first Meinichi, one-cycle later is counted as the 2nd Meinichi. Thus the 3rd cycle memorial is observed the following year – 2 years later as Americans count. All the subsequent memorials thus fall on the year before the number of the cycle memorial. The 7th cycle memorial is observed n the 6th year after death, the 13th cycle on the 12th year, etc. This custom, along with the Buddhist emphasis on death observances over birth observances, has resulted in the understanding or attitude that death is a natural occurrence, no matter how disagreeable it may seem to us. An important byproduct of this custom has been the reinforcing of family ties with members beyond ones immediate family and a sense of continuity from generation to generation. I would like to thank you for your support of the Pasadena Buddhist Temple throughout the years and once again ask for your continued attendance at our religious services and involvement with our many other activities in 2016. This will be my last message as your President as Jeannie Toshima as graciously agreed to take over the task as the incoming President. As we closed out 2015, the month of December was very busy for the Temple membership. We began with preparations for our annual Mochitsuki event. On December 12th, with many members taking the time to help, the Temple held its semiannual general clean-up and omigaki. As a way of thanking them for their hard work and an opportunity for camaraderie, Alan Hatakeyama volunteered to host a potluck barbecue afterwards. It was a great time of sharing food, stories and laughter. We held our year-end Oseibo Taikai to thank our ministers and volunteers for their effort throughout the year. The BWA treated all to a delicious otoki of udon and we were thoroughly entertained by the Dharma School, Sangha Teens and Jr. YBA. We did not hold Sunday Family service on December 27th. Our Joya-e (Year-End) service was held on December 31st at 6:00 p.m. and those in attendance were able to ring the temple bell (in total 108 times) to rid ourselves of human defilements as we prepare to greet the New Year. Soba was also served and enjoyed by everyone who came. Invitations have been sent for the Hoonko Service on January 17th at 10 a.m., to be immediately followed by the New Year’s party and General Temple Membership meeting. Obento lunch can be pre-ordered for $15 each for this event. We hope to see our Temple members and friends in attendance. As you know, the Temple will be having once again an opportunity drawing every month in 2016 for $500, except for December when the drawing will be for $2,000! If you have not purchased your tickets for the drawing, please contact Shelley Shinmoto or Gerry Ito. In the meantime, Board members and others who have sold opportunity drawing tickets, please submit payment for the tickets you have sold to date, or return your unsold tickets to Shelley. December $2000 Winner!!!! Tomomi Yamasaki Get Your 2016 Opportunity Drawing Ticket Now! Each ticket is $100 and every month you have a very good chance to win $500. Selected tickets are returned to the barrel for another chance. The final drawing is $2,000. Contact Gerry Ito (626-797-6346) or Shelley Shinmoto (323-351-0274) if you would like to buy a ticket. If you have any tickets, turn them in ASAP. Pasadena Buddhist Temple • HIKARI • JanFeb, 2016 Before closing, I would like to thank all of you again for your support during my 4-year tenure as President. It has been a pleasure serving you and I believe the Temple Board has accomplished many things. To mention just a few, we revised our “Business and Operations Plan, we’ve amended our bylaws, created a Ministerial Affairs Committee, established a Funeral Guide, created a “Legacy Fund”, established a “Dana” Giving Guideline and hired an admin assistant. With the help of Rev. Gibbs, we are providing classes in Buddhism, Taichi, and Meditation. Although the City of Pasadena had imposed new regulations that has caused some of our fund raising events to be altered and less profitable, the Temple did what was necessary to comply with the new rules and fortunately we were still able to make ends meet. As we are not alone, and other Temples are also experiencing dwindling membership, we ask again that you please urge your family members and friends to join the Temple. For the coming year my role as the “immediate past president” and “1st Vice President”, I will be assisting Jeannie and the Temple Board. The tree will be quite large, approximately 8 ft. tall and will have bronze ginko leaves inscribed with our donor’s names. The Legacy Fund was established as a way to build our operating revenue through donations from our members. We know you already give so much to the Temple, not just your monetary donations and support of our fundraisers, but your time and hard work. As we look beyond the next few years, it’s important to plan for future needs and build a firm foundation so that the Temple exists for generations to come. We would like to ask that you consider joining many other thoughtful and generous members by making a gift to the Pasadena Buddhist Temple Legacy Fund. You may do this in a number of ways. First, a simple cash donation that can be deposited into the Legacy Fund for general operations, or if you prefer, can be designated for a specific purpose or need as you see fit. This can be done at once or pledged in payments spread over time. Second, a bequest such as property, cash, insurance, or securities will help ensure that the Pasadena Buddhist Temple sustains itself as a center of Jodo Shinshu teachings and a rich and vital source of Japanese culture. Third, you can establish a Charitable Annuity Trust, which is also a tax-planning vehicle that can be of benefit to some. And finally, the donation of a vehicle such as a car, boat, motorcycle or RV is another easy way you can contribute by designating PBT as the recipient of the net proceeds of the value of the vehicle. We have established several levels of giving, but of course, any donation you are able to make is greatly appreciated. Southern District Mini-Seminar February 27, 2016 • 2:00 - 3:30 PM Rev. The Pasadena BWA is a wonderful group of ladies that take time out of their busy lives to come and help support the temple and other community functions our organization supports. Even though our main task is not as a “fund raising group”, our main support to the temple has been in that capacity. And so when there is financial burdens to be contend with, the BWA has been there to help out, thanks to the efforts of our ladies that come out and cook chirashi, and all the other items we sell to help raise our funds. So we also need to thank YOU and all your friends for continuing to support our fund-raising efforts. We look forward to your continued support again this year. The BWA will be led by the elected cabinet of officers this year, we were unable to coerce anyone to be acting president, so the officers will all work together to make sure all the tasks are done to help out the temple and our community. We are grateful for the help we get from “non-women” of the temple also.....it gets very hard to move some of those large pots of rice and water in the kitchen....so we appreciate help from anyone who can make time! Our Dine-Out Fundraisers raised $2500 in 2015! Please support this fundraiser in 2016....list of fundraisers at bottom of this page. The Pasadena BWA is open to members of all ages, our membership drive is currently open. Membership is $20/year. We hope you decide to join our group and help us in our many endeavours during the year. We serve lunch to the Pasadena Nikkei Seniors twice a year, provide otoki after most of the special services during the year, serve tea to visiting guest speakers, help with the youth organizations when they need assistance. I have had the wonderful opportunity to be the BWA president for the last few years and I know that it is because of all the BWA members in the past and in the present have done all they could to help the sangha and temple grow. Thanks to everyone for all their support these last few years! Moving into the presidency of the Temple, I look forward to the support of the BWA to help our Temple grow and prosper...and become a place where everyone is appreciated and respected. Gassho, Jeannie Toshima Ho-Onko Service, the memorial service for Shinran Shonin, is scheduled for January 17th. It is a special service and we hope that you will be able to attend. If you would like a ride to the service, please call the Temple Office and arrangements will be made. Following the service we will have our General Meeting and New Year Luncheon. We will order delicious bento and the BWA will serve miso soup. Bento cost is $15 and we need your order by January 13th.
