GSMA welcomes
internet
players
to MWC
By Ken Wieland
his year’s Mobile World
Congress is notable by its
long list of top industry
executives from both inside and
outside the mobile operator
community. The most high-profile,
arguably, is Mark Zuckerberg. The
founder and CEO of Facebook
T
headlines a Mobile World Live
keynote session on Monday.
“We want to engage in a broad
industry dialogue,” Michael O’Hara,
GSMA’s chief marketing officer, told
Mobile World Daily ahead of the big
show. “Having a varied keynote lineup, representing all of the players in
the broad mobile communications
value chain, is a key part of the

By Ronan Shields
his year’s Mobile World
Congress (MWC) marks
another milestone with the
event playing host to the inaugural
mPowered Industries programme,
based at the familiar venue of Fira
Montjuïc (home to MWC from 2006
to 2012).
“The demand for conference
sessions at Fira Gran Via has been
huge, so to complement the main
conference programme we have
T
introduced a standalone programme
that looks at how mobile impacts
adjacent
industries,”
GSMA
marketing chief Michael O’Hara
told Mobile World Daily.
The establishment of the event
reflects how mobile communication
now plays a crucial part in the lives
of people in every corner of the
globe, plus the need for other
industries to accommodate this
seismic shift in consumer behaviour.
Indeed, organisations across a
number of verticals must now
come to terms with a world that has
transitioned to become ‘mobile
first’, a term first coined by Google’s
Eric Schmidt (during his tenure as
CEO) in his Mobile World Live
keynote address at MWC in 2010.

reaching-out process.”
While O’Hara was “thrilled” to
get the Facebook CEO on the
keynote programme, not least
because
he
rarely
makes
appearances outside the US, the
GSMA’s marketing chief said
Zuckerberg’s attendance was part
of a growing Congress tradition of
attracting “tech stars”.

Google’s Eric Schmidt and Twitter
CEO Dick Costolo are among some
of the big-name industry executives
who have previously travelled to
Barcelona to give keynotes for the
Mobile World Live portal.
Joining Zuckerberg on the roster
of keynote speakers from the
internet world is Sirgoo Lee, co-CEO
of South Korea’s Kakao Corporation.
KakaoTalk, a messaging app, is
proving enormously successful in
Southeast Asia, racking up more than
110 million registered users. Jan
Koum, WhatsApp co-founder and
CEO, is another keynote speaker.
O’Hara also highlighted Virginia
Rometty, IBM CEO, who is giving a
Mobile World Live keynote
presentation on Wednesday. Cloud
strategies are a likely focus.
“Under the theme of ‘Creating
What’s Next’, the 2014 edition of
Mobile World Congress will
highlight the most significant
innovations and advances in
mobile, providing a blueprint for the
future,” said O’Hara.
Of course, leading lights from the
mobile
operator
community
continue to underpin the conference
programme. Monday’s opening
keynote session sets the tone with a
discussion about mobile operator
strategies, which brings together
chief executives from the US,
Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
On the discussion panel are Jon
Fredrik Baksaas, president & CEO,
Telenor; Daniel Hajj, CEO, América
Móvil;
Randall
Stephenson,
chairman & CEO, AT&T; Ahmad
Abdulkarim Julfar, CEO, Etisalat;
and Chua Sock Koong, CEO,
SingTel.
Regulators, too, are well
represented. Over 80 government
ministers are attending the
government programme, which
includes a focus on how to
facilitate investment.

NEWS
j GSMA welcomes internet players
to MWC – Cont. from P1
Also in attendance is Tom
Wheeler, chairman of the Federal
Communications Commission, the
US telecoms regulator.
Among exhibitors, O’Hara admits
there was some trepidation last year
about moving from Fira Montjuic to
the new Fira Gran Via venue.
“Those fears faded when they saw
the modern facilities, space and the
convenience of having everything
under one roof,” said O’Hara.
O’Hara conceded there were
some logistical problems in getting
attendees to and from the event on
the first day of last year’s show. To
that end the GSMA has worked with
city authorities in recent months to
improve rail-links, as well as bus
and taxi availability.
To help attendees get more out of
the event, the GSMA has
introduced more than 60 interactive
NFC ‘Tap-n-Go’ points around Fira
Gran Via. They’re designed to
provide quick and easy access to
event information and other
downloadable material, such as
presentations, schedules and event
news.
In addition, two new mobile apps
– available for Android, iOS and
Windows 8 devices – are available
to make life easier for attendees:
SMART Transport and SMART
Food.
SMART
Transport
lists
transportation points by type and
location, identifies closest points,
maps routes to them, and delivers
real-time information on queues
and wait times.
SMART Food provides a
searchable list of catering outlets by
hall, cuisine and proximity, offers
information on wait times and
queues, identifies closest food
outlets and maps routes to them,
and allows attendees to order and
pay for food in advance with credit
card or PayPal and use express
lanes with NFC or QR codes for
quick pick-up.
“We’re bringing mobile solutions
to life,” said O’Hara.
As part of that process, O’Hara
pointed to the GSMA Connected
City, which is now in its second
year. Showing a “real-world urban
environment”, the Connected City
demonstrates
how
mobile
technology is improving people’s
daily lives across automotive,
education, health, retail and other
applications.
The GSMA is presenting
Connected City in Hall 3 (Stand
3A11 and 3A31) in conjunction with
AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, KT and
Vodafone.
Other
companies
involved
include
Accenture,
Ericsson, General Motors, Huawei,
Samsung
and
Synchronoss
Technologies.
The GSMA expects Mobile World
Congress 2014, which is the 28th
edition of the event and the 9th to
be held in Barcelona, to attract at
least 75,000 attendees.

mPowered
Industries
will
assemble leading domain leaders
from the health, travel, marketing
and broadcast media sectors, to
share insights, best practice and
solutions in their respective
industries, as well as business
models for success.
Monday’s mPowered Industries
keynote programme will include
speakers from the BBC, IBM, Visa,
Marriott International, Ithaca Health
and Weve (the joint venture between
three of the UK’s largest mobile
operators); a line-up that indicates how
mobile is now the nexus for consumers
and companies across a number of
industries, and how organisations can
benefit from a collaborative approach
in order to meet the expectations of a
mobilised world.
THE POWER OF
COLLABORATIVE THINKING
Arguably, Weve – a joint venture
between EE, O2 and Vodafone –
exemplifies
the
diversified
opportunities for collaboration in a
world of ‘big data’ and ‘mobile first’
consumers, as the outfit has
launched a number of mobile
advertising, loyalty and payments
services in recent weeks; services
the joint venture terms as the
‘digital wallet’.
David Sear, Weve CEO and
keynote speaker at the event,
explains how the organisation’s
recently unveiled collaboration with
MasterCard to launch a contactless
mobile payments service is an
example of what can be achieved
when best practice is shared.
“Payments are a mess and loyalty
is broken,” he claimed. “Until 2014,
it’s not really been possible to roll
such services at scale on mobile,
but by working together with
MasterCard we have been able to
create standards making it easier
for banks to sign up to the service,
and help reduce the cost of mobile
payments to a tenth of what they
were.”
Weve and MasterCard’s mobile
payments
solution
will
be
demonstrated on the MasterCard
stand from February 24-26,
between 10am and noon.
Fellow keynote speaker Mary
Carol Harris, Visa Europe, director
of mobile, also acknowledged the
importance of collaboration in a
converging world. “As mobile and
payments converge, it is critical that
Visa has a presence at Mobile
World Congress to establish our
position as a key player in the new
mobile ecosystems emerging,” she
told Mobile World Daily. “Speaking
at the mPowered Industries event
provides the opportunity for us to
showcase our new vision and
services that are live already, or
planned for launch in the upcoming
year.”
Weve’s Sear and Visa Europe’s
Harris will be participating in the
mPowered Industries keynote
session 1 – along with a host of
other speakers – in Fira Montjuïc,
Hall M5, between 14:00 and 15:40
on Monday 24 February.
The
mPowered
Industries
keynote programme will be
succeeded on 25 and 26 February
by four separate conference
strands: ECHAlliance Health &
Wellness; EyeforTravel; Mobile
Media Summit and NAB Show
Conferences. All will be hosted in
exhibition hall M8 at Fira Montjuïc.

10 reasons to watch Mobile World Live TV at MWC14
By Justin Springham
The world’s biggest mobile event gets underway in
just a few days’ time. It’s big. REALLY BIG. So big it
has its own television station. And this year Mobile
World Live TV (MWL TV) is going to be all over the
event, with far more screens than ever before and the
best content broadcasting not just around the venue,
but across the city and online globally. So whether
you’re making the trip to Barcelona or stuck back in
the office, MWL TV will ensure you don’t miss a thing.
1
THE BIG ONE: Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is coming to town! Zuckerberg has made
very few event appearances in recent years (especially outside the US), but he’s giving the
first MWL keynote of this year’s event. And MWL TV is streaming the session exclusively
live at 6pm CET on Monday 24th February. That has to be worth a ‘Like’, surely?
2
3
MWL TV is broadcast LIVE. Live television is unpredictable. Things will go wrong. This should
in itself be entertaining (more so for the viewers than presenters). Although we can’t
guarantee any epic Michael Bay meltdowns…
4
MWL TV will bring you more than 20 exclusive interviews with the biggest-name CEOs in
mobile. From operators to OTT players, network vendors to device manufacturers, we will be
talking to the most prominent execs in the industry. Names already confirmed include the
heads of Alcatel-Lucent, EE, Kakao, VimpelCom and ZTE.
5
6
MWL TV is more fun than blisters. With more than 100 multi-sized screens throughout
the venue you will never be far from catching the action. So give your feet a rest and
catch up on all the news.
Another exclusive keynote: the #1 most powerful woman in business (Fortune, 2013) –
IBM’s Chairman, President and CEO, Virginia M. Rometty – will appear live on the
Wednesday evening of Congress, as the head of one of the world’s tech giants talks
mobile, cloud and big data.
MWL TV will debate the industry’s hottest topics all week. In fact we’ve scheduled
almost 20 panel discussions focused on the industry’s biggest talking points – everything
from 5G to wearables, small cells to privacy – and only the most relevant and topical
companies will feature on each panel.
7
We’ll bring you all the action from the 19th annual Global Mobile Awards, as well as an
exclusive interview with BAFTA and Tony Award-winning British actor, writer, presenter
and comedian James Corden. We don’t know how much he knows about the mobile
industry, but we plan to find out.
8
9
10
Every major press launch will air on MWL TV. We’ve already got the invites from Huawei,
Nokia, Samsung, Sony and Tizen, and more will follow. We’ll be reporting from each event.
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS DAILY 2014 – PREVIEW | www.mobileworldcongress.com
Each evening our studio host Sasha Twining will review the day’s action, joined by a panel
of industry experts. Exclusive keynote highlights from that morning’s conference session will
broadcast, as well as all the buzz from the showfloor – don’t miss the Daily Wrapup show.
All the week’s content will be available in bite-sized programme chunks once the event
closes its doors for another year. So if you miss any of the live broadcast and want to
relive a particular programme, every piece of content will be available for replay just
days after the last cerveza has been sunk in Barcelona.
So those are our plans. We hope you’ll be able to tune in, wherever you are, during
what is always a crazy week. MWL TV will be streamed to the homepage of
www.mobileworldlive.com (and broadcast throughout hotels via a local Barcelona TV
station) from 8.30am on Monday 24th February – we’ll see you then.

What do you
expect to be the
hot topics at this
year's show?
Wearable devices will be a
hot topic and I'm expecting
lots of new products in this
area. For smartphones it's
all about iteration rather
than innovation this year,
although a few curvedscreen phones will offer
something a bit different.
LTE's going to be a major
focal point. There are 200
million LTE subscribers
worldwide and CCS Insight
forecasts they'll grow to
over 1 billion by 2017.
Content and apps will also
be huge — we're
expecting some big deals
to be announced and App
Planet to be larger than
ever.
The real area of
innovation in 2014 will be
in the Internet of Things
and specifically M2M.
This category will see
substantial growth across
a number of verticals and
I would expect to see a
lot of companies
demonstrating exciting
solutions at the show.
In the network, we’ll see
lots of SDN/NFV, small
cells and LTE-Advanced.
Service-wise, we should
hear a lot about the
future of
voice/messaging and
data monetisation
(including OTT
partnerships). And while
it won’t be CES, we’re
bound to see some highprofile device launches
and platform news.
Mobile players are now
looking for the next big
thing. Wearables
represent a huge
opportunity to extend our
interaction with mobile
devices. They are the tip
of the iceberg of a new
revolution in which
connectivity and mobility
will take on new
dimensions. Wearables,
the Internet of Things
and Connectivity will be
the hottest topics at this
year’s show.
Mark Zuckerberg’s
keynote - I’m really
interested to hear what
he has to say about
online identity and
personal data. As our
lives become increasingly
digital, the concept of
identity in the digital
world – and who
authenticates people’s
identities and guards
their personal data – is
going to be hugely
important.
Smart devices, as ever,
However, I’m personally
fascinated to hear how
providers of alternative
device platforms are
getting on, especially given
Firefox OS’s strong
showing last year. With the
more canny new wave
platform providers now
recognising how to use
existing hardware and
software platform
developments – especially
those around Android – to
their advantage, the
business models behind
them are beginning to
make more sense.
Any tips for a
breakthrough
name, service or
application?
Watch out for Taiwanbased chipmaker
MediaTek. Its chips were
designed into about 200
million smartphones in
2013 and we predict that
number will keep
growing in 2014. For the
first time in recent years
Qualcomm will have
some significant
competition, so you can
expect a strong response
from it and other silicon
suppliers. And we might
hear some big news from
Microsoft as Nokia
becomes part of its
business in 2014.
Chinese smartphone
vendors have succeeded
in beginning to disrupt
the market but the
majority of their volumes
remain in China. In 2014
we will see the likes of
Lenovo and Huawei
succeed internationally
with high-quality, lowmargin products that will
test the profitability of all
Android vendors. But
with the recent hire of
Hugo Barra I suspect
that it will be Xiaomi that
will be the surprise name
of the year.
WebRTC. We’ve seen the
hype around WebRTC
slowly build over the last
few years. More
importantly, we’ve seen
commercial offerings
ramp to the point where
we should be able to turn
WebRTC from a nice set
of demos into something
more significant carriers
can benefit from.
Most companies forget
that thousands of new
products are launched
every day. This usually
means endless names,
complex products, poor
experiences and low
value. The best advice is
to focus on simplicity.
Companies that
differentiate by making
things simple will find a
long lasting formula for
success. Value is only
high when it makes our
lives simple.
Pebble. Their Pebble
Steel smartwatch can
run on Android or iOS,
and, unlike many of its
competitors, it looks like
a watch someone might
actually want to wear.
Pebble raised millions
through crowdsourcing to
develop the Steel, which
went on sale last month
– can’t wait for mine to
arrive!
Lenovo has already put
itself at the connected
devices top table by
acquiring Motorola Mobility.
In the longer run, Windows
Phone could become one of
the big stories of 2014 as
consumers and business
users finally start to see the
value in Microsoft’s
investment in the platform
and carriers feel more able
to push the devices. How
Microsoft handles its
acquisition of Nokia’s
mobile phones and services
business will be interesting
to observe and may also be
fundamental to the
company’s future.
What will be the
most overhyped
sector in mobile
this year?
There's no doubt:
wearables. The industry
is placing a lot of hope on
this sector as the next
big thing, but there's also
an enormous amount of
hype. Big questions still
need to be answered. Do
people actually want
wearables? Which form
factors work best? What
will people pay for them?
Will they keep using
them? Right now the jury
is most definitely out.
Without a doubt it will be
the wearable tech space.
So many big companies
have jumped in without
thinking through the real
use case of their products.
The lack of true value that
these devices add mean
that it will be 2015 before
they start to go
mainstream. Maybe it is
another category that
Apple needs to redefine
before we see real growth.
I figure it will be a threeway tie: Internet of
Things, SDN/NFV and 5G.
The first two represent
major opportunities for
vendors and carriers, but
are so broad that
messaging around them
has become nearly
irrelevant. However, 5G
probably takes the win
since it’s the topic
everyone likes to talk
about, but only to say,
“it’s not defined yet and it
won’t be around for 5+
years.”
Flexible displays.
Manufacturers are trying
to innovate through new
form factors. At the
show, some vendors will
promote devices with
flexible screens and
preach about how they
improve the viewing
experience. However,
flexible displays will only
become popular when
users can bend and fold a
large screen into a small
pocket.
The Internet of Things.
While there’s obviously a
huge opportunity here,
there’s still lots of work
to do and it will be a long
time before operators
see any significant
revenues from connected
devices - at GSMA
Intelligence we estimate
that M2M made up just
2.8 per cent of global
connections last year.
The wearables sector is
close to boiling over in
terms of hype and in the
long run much of that
hype may be justified. For
now, wearables are for
the most part either
accessories serving
particular applications or
too expensive to
encourage mass adoption.
Wearables only really
become interesting when
they represent true open
platforms for innovation
and aren’t tied to specific
vendors’ smart devices or
apps, so the commercial
release of Google Glass
could be a turning point.
What one
development
would you like to
happen in the
mobile industry in
the next 12
months?
Personally I'd like to see
data roaming abolished,
especially in Europe. I still
find it hard to understand
why it costs me €0.55 per
MB to use my UK mobile
phone in Paris, which is
closer to London than
Edinburgh. We should at
least move to a reasonable
flat rate. If my hotel in
Barcelona offers unlimited
Internet access for €10 a
day, why can't mobile
operators offer a similar
deal?
I think as an industry we
need to do more to make
mobile technology more
accessible to a greater
percentage of the world’s
population. The solutions
that are being developed
today have the
opportunity to have wide
scale economic, social
and environmental
benefits that will change
people’s lives. All of
which is significantly
more important than
what size screen the next
iPhone will have.
Broadly, I’d like to see
the back office get the
attention it deserves. To
some extent, we’ve seen
its profile rise in the face
of hype around data
analytics (aka, “big
data”). Still, the
OSS/BSS space isn’t
often considered exciting;
that’s a shame since it’s
at the center of carrier
service innovation.
The most important
development would be
the end of roaming
charges. Mobile
operators need to be at
the forefront of a truly
global mobile revolution.
Each individual should be
free to travel between
any two locations in the
world without being
charged a premium price
for communications.
I’d like to see more dualSIM smartphones. You
still see so many people
carrying around two
iPhones, which is crazy.
With screens getting
bigger there should be
room for the extra
hardware, although
admittedly a strategy that
reduces sales volumes
would be hard for device
vendors to sell to
shareholders!
My one hope, not just for
2014 but for the future, is
that mobile operators
finally learn to embrace
software and become
fully part of the dynamics
and dialogue of the
software industry. The
distinction between
telecoms, media and IT
are fast disappearing at
both a technology and a
business level and failing
to respond appropriately
to this will have farreaching consequences
for operators.

(NOSTALGIC) FEATURE
The Show Daily – through the years….
First held in 1987 and having
undergone a few identity changes, the
GSMA Mobile World Congress is now
the industry’s largest annual event.
Every year the show generates
headlines around the world, but for
the last 15 or so years its own
newspaper has been the daily ‘must
read’ for attendees. We take a look
back at how the Show Daily has
covered the event’s growth.
2002
2007
2011
Back when the event was held in Cannes,
France, and known as the 3GSM World
Congress, the prestigious annual awards
ceremony had a touch of film festival glamour
(but we were still waiting on plentiful supply of
3G handsets)…
The first Congress to be produced by the GSMA,
and one where mobile operators tackled the
threat of a rival technology called WiMAX that
failed to live up to its hype…
As Nokia and Sony Ericsson hit the front page,
the 2011 event set new records with attendance
of more than 60,000 and nearly 1,400 exhibiting
companies. Plus, the GSMA opened its
‘Connected House’ to the world…
2008
2003
One of the world’s first ‘smartphones’, Danger’s
Hiptop device was unveiled to the European
market at the 2003 event…
2004
Talk of (3G) capacity crunches and hype – some
things never change…
2005
The last year that the Cote d’Azur played host to
the event, but the focus was more on emerging
markets such as Brazil than the
Mediterranean…
2006
Barcelona’s Fira Montjuïc venue welcomed the
3GSM World Congress with open arms in a preiPhone and apps era where the hot topics
centred around mobile entertainment…
The first Show Dailies to be produced by the
GSMA, and the year the event rebranded as the
Mobile World Congress; more than 55,000
visitors and 1,300 exhibitors set record
attendance numbers, as China Mobile
announced plans to ‘trial’ LTE…
2009
Amidst a global economic downturn the 2009
Mobile World Congress still attracted 1,300
exhibiting companies. The big news of the week
focused on plans by the largest US operator
Verizon Wireless to become one of the world’s
first LTE operators…
2010
In a Mobile World Congress first, Google
Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt delivered a
keynote that was streamed live on Mobile World
Live to a global audience. And more than 20,000
people (including 6,000 developers) visited the
inaugural App Planet event within Congress…
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS DAILY 2014 – PREVIEW | www.mobileworldcongress.com
2012
Another year, another record; Facebook, Ford
and China Mobile made headlines while more
than 67,000 visitors from 205 countries – and
more than 1,500 exhibiting companies –
attended Congress. 2012 was the last year the
event was held at Fira’s Montjuic venue…
2013
In its new home of Fira Gran Via, Mobile World
Congress set a new record in 2013 with more
than 72,000 visitors and 1,700 exhibiting
companies. Internet giant Mozilla dominated the
week’s headlines with plans to take on the might
of iOS and Android in the mobile software space,
while venue highlights included the Connected
House morphing into an entire city…
2014
With headlines yet to be made (will we see an
Android device from Nokia and Samsung’s
flagship Galaxy S5?), the GSMA expects the 2014
event to be the biggest yet…

Content Sharing
Game on! It’s time to assemble your best technology team if you want to
hold the winner’s cup for online content sharing and entertainment. With a
global audience that’s ever growing, no electronic or toy manufacturer
wants to leave this competition to chance. To the victors go the spoils: a
sizeable portion of the US$1.1 trillion consumers spent on electronics and the
US$13.3 billion they dropped on online gaming last year. Both numbers are
sure to soar into the stratosphere as internet users double the number of
connected devices they own to five by the year 2017.
THE ULTIMATE REMOTE IS IN YOUR

Embedded in millions of smartphones
everywhere, unassuming NFC technology
has been content to play fullback to date.
However, this close-range, low-power
wireless technology is now storming the
center, eager to help kick some serious field
goals. To accomplish this aim – and advance
to the finals -- NFC is teaming up with
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to form a technology trio
of power forwards. Together, these three
technologies will transform mobile content
sharing and entertainment by providing
seamless hand-offs, instant and always-on
connectivity, and new ways to work and
game.
So what’s happened? First, NFC technology
has gained critical mass. It’s already
embedded in several hundred million
handsets but will soar to 1.6 billion by the
year 2018. In users’ hands, pockets, and
purses, the smartphone has become the
computing device of choice: mobile and full
of rich functionality. It’s not just a phone,
mini-computer, and camera: It’s also a
portable TV and game controller.
NFC IS EVERYWHERE
Equally importantly, NFC technology
provides instant connections to Bluetooth
devices and Wi-Fi networks, making critical
processes faster, easier, and better. Its favorite
move is the push kick – a quick, short and
highly accurate pass – to a teammate.
So how will your consumers use NFC
technology and its technology teammates? In
our white paper, Smart and Perfect Together:
NFC, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi Make Mobile
Connections and Content Sharing Easy and
Convenient, we introduce you to the fictional
Velocious family -- parents Gig and Zetta,
toddler Buzzy, preteen twins Flash and Dash,
and teenager Tweet and her friend Bitly -who are using NFC technology to power and
streamline their lives on an ordinary Saturday
in November 2017. In just one day, they’ll use
NFC technology to:
• Share and print photos by touching three
tagged devices together
• Help their toddler learn English language
skills with a mash-up of physical and
virtual learning devices
• Check the energy consumption and
maintenance needs of home appliances
• Transfer video to a home TV via an NFCpowered device and Bluetooth controller
• Listen to an audio book in a borrowed car
with an NFC sticker, smartphone, and car’s
audio system
• Share a home Wi-Fi network with a friend
• Use a fitness tracker to streamline data
capture and monitor daily activity and
health information
• Enjoy music by tapping a Bluetooth
headset to a smartphone to connect the
two devices
• Download mobile games to the home TV
and play them with Bluetooth game
controllers
ON THE GO WITH THE ALWAYS
CONNECTED FAMILY
Does this scenario look like your life? Like
your customers’ lives? If it isn’t, it will be –
soon. NFC stickers and inlays are appearing
in home electronics such as TVs, routers,
printers, and cameras; are embedded in smart
wristbands, watches, and hands-free devices;
and are carried for perpetual on-the-go Wi-Fi
access. NFC technology is so useful that it’s
even being placed in refrigerators and
washing machines to provide vital
information about appliance performance,
while streamlining key functions and
maintenance. With five devices apiece, a
family like the six-member Velocious
household could easily possess up to 30
intelligent devices, all talking together via
NFC, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connections.
Consumers will use NFC technology to:
• Enable rapid, seamless pairing: Simply tap
NFC and Bluetooth enabled devices
together to connect them. There is no
manual set-up, no interference from other
devices, and an almost instantaneous
connection. NFC tags can quickly turn over
their signal to Bluetooth devices to enable
longer wireless connections of 30 to 100
feet, depending on the device power.
• Access Wi-Fi networks in public and private
locations: Instantly access a Wi-Fi network by
tapping a laptop, tablet, or smartphone to an
NFC sticker or the router itself, if the tag is
embedded inside. Users can carry and share
the routers on their devices with friends or
access trusted networks easily. Retailers and
vendors benefit, since they know the Wi-Fi
service is localized to their location and can’t
be bootlegged by offsite users.
• Switch on devices: The latest generation of
NFC tags can even switch on Bluetooth
devices and Wi-Fi networks by harvesting
their power, making it that much easier to
access media and content. NFC inlays can
be placed close to the device surface, apart
from other circuit board electronics, saving
more space for these parts.
• Transfer content: Tap NFC-enabled devices
together to share content with a friend or use
NFC-powered remote controllers to move
media to a TV for group consumption.
• Authenticate products: With their unique
ID numbers, NFC tags provide the same
product identification capabilities as other
RFID tags, while pulling double duty as
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi access enablers.
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS DAILY 2014 – PREVIEW | www.mobileworldcongress.com
Manufacturers can use NFC tags to
authenticate goods, reducing counterfeiting
and increasing consumer confidence in
their product purchases.
• Provide instructions: Instead of printing
costly user manuals, electronics and
games manufacturers can leverage the
same NFC tags they’re using for Bluetooth
and Wi-Fi pairing to link consumers to
graphic instructions and videos on their
corporate website.
With its seamless connectivity and
exceptional functionality, it’s clear that NFC
technology is here to stay as a power
forward. Make sure NFC has a critical role in
your wireless strategy, as you design
electronics, online games, and intelligent
toys for today’s technology-discerning – and
consuming – buyers.
Game on, indeed.

FEATURE | SHOW PREVIEW
MWC 2014:
Top 5 Themes
Mobile World Congress (MWC) is back for its second year at the new venue
on Gran Via and its ninth year in Barcelona. Those of you who remember the
last Cannes event in 2005 when it was still known as 3GSM have witnessed
how much MWC has evolved over the last decade. Indeed, MWC 2014 will
bear little resemblance to its earlier incarnations as cars, wearable
technology and other connected devices increasingly dominate the
showfloor. For MWC is no longer ‘just’ about mobile phones, mobile
technology and networks; it also reflects how mobile is pervading other
industries and areas of our lives on a massive scale. As Anne Morris reports,
that will be even more apparent at this year’s event.
o what can you expect to see on your
walk through the eight halls of the Fira
Gran Via? Below we have compiled
some views from long-time visitors to MWC
on what they expect or hope to see at the
show.
S
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
To say that wearable technology, or plain
‘wearables’, was a dominant theme at CES in
Las Vegas last month is something of an
understatement, and it is inevitable that the
momentum generated by new launches at
that event will continue at MWC. Although
MWC is not as focused on new gadgets as
CES, expect to see plenty of these types of
devices on the show floor.
“We likely saw more wearables in Las
Vegas than will be on display in Barcelona,”
noted Avi Greengart, research director,
consumer devices, at Current Analysis. “That
said, the category is of growing importance
to operators and device vendors alike, so I do
expect to see plenty of wearable technology,
particularly as smartphone add-ons and as
part of m-health initiatives.”
Kester Mann, principal analyst at CCS
Insight, added that there is still a great deal of
hype around wearables as well as questions
about what people would actually ‘wear’ or
even want. “The jury is still out,” Mann said,
“but the industry is very interested.”
PAGE 8
In a recent report on wearables at CES,
CCS Insight noted that CES 2014 provided
some clues about where this sector is heading
and further underlined the importance of
health and wellbeing as dimensions in
wearables, “but no real breakthrough has yet
been made”, the company said.
Mann noted that smart watches and smart
bands are among the first tier of products to
be emerging that have some momentum
behind them. But CCS Insight sees few
compelling mass-appeal consumer use cases
and applications so far.
Emma Mohr-McClune, service director,
global consumer services at Current Analysis,
also pointed out that a major factor with
wearables is that such devices and gadgets
often come without a SIM card. “So what’s in
it for operators?” she asked. Will OEMs start
to consider how the operator could be
brought into the value chain?
According to Annette Zimmermann,
principal research analyst at Gartner, there is
a growing link between wearables and
smartphones “as this device is still the hub for
peripheral devices and the services
ecosystem”.
“Google has enhanced the Android platform
with more APIs to enable interaction with
wearables,” said Zimmermann. “It could be
the time for Microsoft to show enhancements
of that kind for Windows Phone.”
OPERATING SYSTEMS
Talk of Android and Windows Phone takes us
neatly onto the next area of focus: mobile
operating systems. Visitors to last year’s
event will remember that Mozilla created
something of a storm by unveiling Firefox OS
as an alternative HTML5-based operating
system for low-cost Android smartphones in
emerging markets.
The company said at MWC 2013 that more
than 20 operators and handset vendors would
support the new platform, and Spain’s
Telefonica has arguably been the staunchest
supporter of the Firefox OS, launching the
first device based on the OS in Spain last July.
In November, Mozilla said the OS was now
available in 13 countries.
This year’s MWC provides a good
opportunity for Mozilla to announce the
next step in Firefox OS development. “It’s an
ideal time for an update,” said MohrMcClune, who added that Firefox is also
proving to be the best bet so far among the
various operating systems that have
emerged in the past year or two.
Zimmermann agreed: “We could see
Firefox extend to other platforms; a Firefox
tablet has been rumoured for a long time,”
she said.
According to Greengart, the market is
currently a natural duopoly between Android
and Apple iOS, with BlackBerry and
Microsoft fighting hard to claim distant third
place.
“The window for other vendors to offer
mainstream alternatives has probably
closed; the ecosystem costs are simply too
high,” Greengart said. “Operators want more
choices, but none of the alternative OSs has
made a strong case for why consumers
should choose them. Firefox OS is actually
shipping on inexpensive hardware, but lowcost Android and Asha phon es are tightly
competitive.”
“We should see new
devices from
Samsung, HTC,
Nokia, Huawei, TCL,
Sony and others...we
may also see more
devices with a
curved/flexible
display from Samsung
and LG”
Annette Zimmermann, Gartner
Apart from Firefox OS, analysts tend to
agree that Samsung’s Tizen operating system
is most likely to offer something new in
Barcelona this year: both CCS Insight’s Mann
and Gartner’s Zimmermann said MWC 2014
could prove to be a belated coming-out party
for Tizen on Samsung devices. Tizen itself
has also indicated that there could be an
update on its operating system in Barcelona
this year.
“Tizen may make some
announcements at the show, and I look
forward to seeing how it is positioned,” said
Greengart.
Mohr-McClune also pointed out that
although iOS and Android may appear to
have the market already sewn up, it has to be
remembered that the mobile OS market is
really not that old. “It is too early to talk of
established consumer habits,” she said.

TOP 5 THEMES
DEVICES
As well as possible new Tizen-based devices,
rumours are rife that Samsung will make use
of this year’s MWC to launch a new flagship
product, the Galaxy S5. The company has
announced its ‘Unpacked 5’ event will be held
in Barcelona, and this would mark the first
time it has unveiled a flagship device at the
event since the Galaxy S2 in 2011. It has been
suggested that the launch has been brought
forward due to lower than expected sales of
the Galaxy S4.
“Device vendors will launch new
smartphones as MWC continues to be the
main event for those announcements,” said
Zimmermann, who specialises in devices at
Gartner. “Like every year, vendors will use
MWC to announce new flagship products. We
should see new devices from Samsung, HTC,
Nokia, Huawei, TCL, Sony and others...we
may also see more devices with a
curved/flexible display from Samsung and
LG.”
Other announcements may come from
Russian company Yota Devices, which could
launch version 2 of its dual-screen
YotaPhone. Zimmermann also highlighted
the possible launch of what has so far been
dubbed the ‘Blackphone’, a joint project of
Silent Circle and Spanish smartphone
Geeksphone.
“I’m expecting to
see at least 10 cars
in Hall 3”
Emma Mohr-McClune, Current Analysis
“It is a phone entirely made with the user’s
privacy in mind,” observed Zimmermann. “I
don’t think this will be a big trend but it
highlights a problem that service and
technology providers will have to deal with,”
she added.
Nokia meanwhile is holding its own press
conference at Fira Gran Via in Hall 3,
although it’s also not entirely clear how
Nokia, Microsoft and Windows Phones will
be showcased at the event: “How Microsoft
presents Nokia’s brand is a huge question
mark, and a question I’m going to be
following closely myself,” said Greengart.
Interestingly, Microsoft is holding a separate
press event in Barcelona on the Sunday
before the big show, where it promises to
update on Windows Phone progress. And
Nokia has been linked to launch of an
Android device, which would really ramp up
speculation over the direction of its future
ownership by Microsoft.
Overall, Greengart is fully hoping to see
some novelties on the showfloor: “You never
know what’s going to pop out of someone’s
lab – that’s one of the great joys of attending
shows,” he said. “MWC has been the launch
point for several modular phone/tablet
initiatives, new technologies, and, on the
other end of the spectrum, phones for seniors
and simplicity seekers.”
At the same time Greengart is also
expecting to see more of the same: “Lots of
Android-based phablets is what I’m expecting
from most vendors,” he added.
CONNECTED CARS/CONNECTED
HOMES
As highlighted in the introduction to this
report, MWC 2014 will showcase as never
before the pervasiveness of mobile
technology in an increasing number of
vertical sectors. This will be reflected in no
small part by connected cars and connected
homes, as mobile technology is utilised to
add new features and functionalities in a
variety of different ways.
“I’m expecting to see at least 10 cars in Hall
3,” said Mohr-McClune, who added that she
would not be surprised to see all operators
with a car, following the example set by SK
Telecom last year.
A key question here is how much operators
actually want to be involved in the value
chain for connected cars. Some appear happy
to take the reseller approach while others
want to be involved in the entire ecosystem
and create a whole new set of information
services that be accessed from the car.
Meanwhile gadgets related to the
connected home feature prominently in the
kitchen, and the crossover between mobile
technology and food retail is increasingly
sparking the interest of major supermarket
brands.
Indeed, Mohr-McClune said she would not
be surprised to find herself rubbing shoulders
with supermarket executives at MWC as they
get in on the act with their own smartphone
apps and branded tablets, such as Tesco’s
Hudl and Aldi’s low-cost tablet.
CONNECTING THE NEXT 5 BILLION
Meanwhile, as MWC continues to illustrate,
the developed world benefits on an ongoing
basis from incredible advancements in mobile
technology and connectivity. Mobile is also
regarded as the solution to connect the
around 5 billion people across the globe who
do not as yet have even basic internet
connectivity – but costs need to be brought
down first.
Some prominent names such as Facebook
founder Mark Zuckerberg have launched
initiatives aimed at driving down the cost of
connecting people in countries where
incomes are low. A separate initiative, the
Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), wants

to see the realisation of the UN Broadband
Commission Broadband Target of entry-level
broadband services priced at less than 5 per
cent of average monthly income.
Zuckerberg’s initiative is dubbed internet.org,
and it sees mobile operators as playing a
central role in making access affordable. They
are the ones that will need to drive initiatives
and partnerships to develop lower-cost and
higher-quality smartphones, as well as take the
lead on collaborations to roll out internet
access in under-served communities.
Zuckerberg is due to give the first of the
week’s Mobile World Live keynotes at MWC
2014 on extending the benefits of ubiquitous
Internet access to the unconnected world.
This is also Zuckerberg’s first appearance at
MWC, marking the growing importance of
mobile technology for the realisation of his
ambitions.
AND FINALLY…
Of course the MWC conference programme
will feature other leading industry executives
including Alcatel-Lucent CEO Michel
Combes, America Movil CEO Daniel Hajj,
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson and many,
many more.
It’s set to be an exciting week, and the
Mobile World Daily team will be there to keep
you up to date on all the developments. See
you there!

We recommend to use the MWC Airport
Shuttle Bus to get to Fira Gran Via, but there are
other options to reach the venue. Please check
the Travel Section on MWC website for more
information on other transportation options.
Lost an item in a taxi? A Lost & Found service
is available by calling +34 902 101 564.
New for 2014! Download the Official Taxi
App for iOS and Android devices. The app
allows users to calculate estimated time,
distance and fares for taxis in the metropolitan
Barcelona area. Link can be found at the
transport section on MWC website.
Guests using VIP Transportation (limousines, VIP
cars and small shuttle vans [maximum nine
passengers]) are allowed direct access to the venue,
using our VIP Pick-Up and Drop-Off Point on the
East end of Hall 3 (on Carrer de la Botànica).
MOBILE WORLD
CONGRESS 2014 TO
BECOME
WORLD'S LARGEST
CERTIFIED CARBON
NEUTRAL TRADESHOW
Access to the VIP Drop-Off Point:
VIP cars and limousines booked through our
official supplier b network (former Barcelona
Business Pass, BBP) are automatically granted
access to this location and have the required
sticker applied. Cars booked through other
suppliers must apply for access and the required
sticker, please see contact details below.
The 2014 Mobile World Congress will become
the world's largest tradeshow certified to have
a zero carbon footprint. The GSMA will certify
Mobile World Congress as carbon neutral
through the internationally recognised PAS
2060 standard; official certification will be
awarded once the event is completed and
official data on emissions can be obtained.

For several years, the GSMA has had climate
change initiatives underway at Mobile World
Congress in order to reduce the impact of the
event on the environment. These initiatives
have focused heavily on reducing waste in
printed materials; encouraging the re-use and
recycling of materials at the venue; utilising
digital signage and electronic tools; and
working with Fira Barcelona, exhibitors and
local partners to minimise the carbon
footprint of the event. This year, the GSMA
has increased its environmental commitment
by working to not only reduce the emissions
of the event, but to go one step further and
certify Mobile World Congress 2014 as
carbon neutral.
VIP CAR
Please check the recommended routes to access
the VIP area on the transport section on MWC
website. It is important that we drivers follow the
recommended routes as have been designated by
the Guardia Urbana (Traffic Police) to help with
the mobility of the area around the venue.
This VIP Pick-up and Drop-off Point is not a
permanent parking zone. Once a drop-off is
complete, the driver will be asked to leave, and
to return within 10 minutes of the next pick-up.
Please note that VIP Cars can wait to a holding
area at Motors street. Guardia Urbana will not
allow VIP cars parking around Gran Via venue or
dropping attendees off in other areas rather than
the designated VIP Pick-up and Drop-off point.
Please check the Travel Section on MWC
website for important information for VIP Car
Drivers and Guests.
H12 BUS
PRIVATE BUSES
Barcelona has added a bus line called the H12
bus. This line runs along Gran Via de les Corts
Catalans of Barcelona. This line crosses the city
from the Forum area to Fira Gran Via, passing
through Passeig de Gràcia and Plaça Espanya.
Some groups of attendees book shuttle buses
and vans to transport only their group. While not
required, we strongly recommend those wishing
to book Private Shuttle Buses do so through b
network (formerly Barcelona Business Pass [BBP]).
The bus stop nearest Fira Gran Via is located in
Plaça Europa, a one-minute walk to the South
Entrance. Please check the ‘Travel’ section on MWC
website to see all of the stops of the H12 Bus.
Please check the Travel Section on MWC website
for important information for Private Buses.

Mobile World Congress will generate
approximately 150,000 metric tonnes of
carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e); it is
estimated that 14 per cent of carbon emissions
related to Mobile World Congress are
associated with the venue and operation of the
event, while 86 per cent result from attendees
travelling to the event. To achieve carbon
neutrality, the GSMA will first undertake
activities to reduce the carbon footprint and
will then purchase carbon credits to offset any
remaining emissions. Carbon credits purchased
by the GSMA will fund several CER (Certified
Emission Reductions) projects certified by the
United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC), including a
hydropower project in China and a wind
energy project in India, among others.
To achieve certification of Mobile World
Congress as carbon neutral, the GSMA is
undertaking the following steps:
• Work with an independent certified
consultant to measure the total carbon
footprint of the event, including all
attendees, exhibitors and the GSMA's own
carbon footprint under Publicly Available
Specification 2050:2011 (PAS 2050:2011);
• Implement a carbon management plan to
reduce the event's carbon footprint;
• Purchase carbon credits in order to offset
the emissions that could not be avoided or
lowered through reduction initiatives; and
• Obtain official certification under the
international standard PAS 2060, verifying
the process through an independent audit.
It is expected that the GSMA will finalise the
process to achieve certification by June 2014.
