VISION
FOR THE FUTURE

LAUREUS SPORT FOR GOOD FOUNDATION
W
hen Laureus was first established in 2000,
there was little widespread understanding
of how the power of sport could be used
to change society and improve people’s lives.
Today, thanks in part to the pioneering work of Laureus,
there is a real awareness among governments and
international agencies that sport can play a significant role
in helping them to achieve their objectives.
Over the years Laureus has developed an innovative concept
which has helped grassroots sport-based organisations
to function effectively, derived from the vision of Nelson
Mandela, the Patron of Laureus.
President Mandela told us in a speech he delivered at the
first Laureus World Sports Awards ‘Sport has the power to
change the world’ and subsequently the Laureus Sport for
Good Foundation was formed with the mission to fund and
promote the use of sport as a tool for social change.
Laureus today, as it was in the beginning, is still a funder of
community sports programmes around the world. Indeed
we have pumped more than €60 million into projects since
2000 and we currently support more than 140 projects
in 34 countries. But in recent years Laureus has gone far
beyond this and has pioneered significant innovations in the
sport for development world.

NETWORK
Laureus has invested over €1 million to develop a broad
package of training in the sport for social change sector,
including training in peace building through sport, crime
prevention through sport, employability through sport,
youth leadership through sport and tackling violence
through sport. The coaches and young leaders that are
trained are then able to go out and become role models
in their community. In 2012 Laureus trained a total of 51
organisations worldwide.
Since 2000, when Laureus made its first grants to innovative
projects using sport to inspire young people, Laureus
has supported projects on every continent. An admirable
achievement, but for many years there was very little coordination or contact between projects and countries.
Now things are different and countless projects and
the young people they serve are reaping the benefits of
having an effective global network of grassroots sports
programmes, connected to one another through Laureus
summits, project exchanges, training camps, and youth
focused retreats.
MONITORING &
EVALUATION
Laureus has partnered with two organisations to develop a
bespoke package of training and software support to enable
projects to measure the changes they deliver to the lives of
young people. In short to evaluate whether these projects are
working effectively and whether donated funds are delivering
maximum impact. Training to use these tools has already been
delivered to 28 organisations in nine countries worldwide.
At the Camp Nou Stadium of FC Barcelona last year,
project leaders from all 34 countries joined members of
the Laureus World Sports Academy to share knowledge and
ideas, undergo training and develop joint initiatives around
the use of sport to improve the lives of young people. For
me, it was memorable. A perfect example of the Laureus
family growing and flourishing.

ADVOCACY
Laureus is now a significant and loud voice in the sport
for development world. Laureus World Sports Academy
Members, by nature of their success, are able to open doors
and make governments and opinion makers listen. In 2012
and 2013 we saw initiatives promoting the use of sport,
taking place around the world: Laureus representatives
presented research and opinion for discussion on Capitol
Hill in Washington, the UK House of Commons in London
and at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio de Janeiro.
RESEARCH
LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER NAWAL EL MOUTAWAKEL AT LAUREUSSUPPORTED PEACEPLAYERS PROJECT IN DURBAN
Laureus published seven research articles in 2012 in
partnership with universities and other centres of sport
science excellence around the world. This comes on the back
of ground-breaking Laureus-funded research reports such
as the Teenage Kicks and Sport Scores which showed that
community sports projects are highly cost effective when it
comes to tackling community challenges and can provide
governments and tax payers with significant returns.
Laureus is more than ever committed to helping young
people to transform their lives through the positive power of
sport, now and in the future.
There are countless examples of young people whose lives
have been changed by attending a Laureus-supported
programme, giving them a new direction, greater confidence
and self-esteem and the chance to stay out of trouble or
increase their chances of employment. This makes me, and
my fellow Academy members very proud.
In this latest edition of the Laureus Magazine, you can read
more about the Laureus approach and meet more of the
young people whose lives have been transformed by the
power of sport. I hope you enjoy it and share with me the
prospect of an exciting future.

IN OLYMPIC LEGACY TRIP
J
ust months after the Laureus World Sports
Awards visited Rio, some very special Sport for
Good Foundation project members from the
Brazilian state made a life-changing journey
of their own.
The exchange programme ran from May 27 to June 3 and
saw seven Brazilian Youth Council Members aged between
16-30 visit the London academy situated in the shadow of
the London Olympic Park.
One of those young people was a very talented young
boxer named Wanderson. Before he arrived, 16-year-old
Wanderson, or ‘Sugar’ to those who know him best, said:
“I am really excited about seeing the Fight for Peace
academy here in London and to meet our friends in the UK.
Young People from the Laureus-supported Luta Pela Paz
(Fight for Peace) Boxing Academy journeyed to sister project
Fight for Peace in east London to learn about each other,
how they both use martial arts for social good and to build
even stronger links as a legacy of the London 2012 and
upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Laureus World Sports Awards and was very impressed with
the work the project does and really enjoyed meeting some

Rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, Vice Chair of the Laureus

aureus has welcomed two celebrated sporting
Ambassadors to its family – former FC
Barcelona and Real Madrid footballer Luis Figo
and British tennis star Tim Henman.
Tim Henman, who dominated British tennis for more than
ten years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reached the
Wimbledon semi-finals four times. He was and remains
immensely popular with the Wimbledon crowd, who now
watch the action on a giant TV screen from a viewing
area which they have dubbed Henman Hill. He is now a
respected TV analyst.
Tim said: “I am delighted to be named a Laureus
Ambassador and would like to thank the members of the
Laureus Academy for asking me. We all know how effective
sport can be in tackling problems and bringing people
together. That is at the heart of the Laureus philosophy and
it is what I believe too.”

are delighted to welcome Tim as a Laureus Ambassador.
You only have to be anywhere near Tim at Wimbledon, or

ortuguese-born Luis Figo was one of the famous Real Madrid Galacticos and was in the team which won La Liga twice and the Champions League during his five year spell
from 2000-2005.
He joins other renowned football figures as an Ambassador
for the Laureus Foundation in Spain, including the
Spanish National Team manager Vicente del Bosque and
international player Juan Mata.
Luis also has his own foundation, the Fundaçao Luis Figo
(www.fundacaoluisfigo.pt), and he commented: “ It is
an honour to be a part of the Laureus Spain Foundation
and work on interesting and useful projects that
benefit society.”

rupo Desportivo e Recreativo de Manica (GDM), a football-based Laureus-supported
project in Mozambique, is one of over
20 grassroots projects worldwide that is
benefiting from InFocus – a ground breaking new package
of software and support that helps sport for development
organisations to measure their effectiveness.
Laureus World Sports Academy Member Martina Navratolova
said: “I think it’s essential for the projects to know how they
should structure themselves because now with the austerity
measures in Europe and the United States what gets cut first
in schools is art and athletics. So there will be even fewer
opportunities for kids to really be active and to do sports
so I think it’s even more essential that Laureus does this
work where we become really extremely efficient and make
sure that the money goes in the right direction and that the
programmes are implemented correctly.”
For years most information collected from Laureus projects
was limited to data around funds received and activities
being delivered (for example the number of youths
accessing different types of sporting and educational
sessions), rather than to outcomes, measuring actual life
changes taking place as a result of those activities. Infocus
allows Laureus and its network of supported projects to see
their impact in much more detail, including life changes
created for youths and also (as shown in the chart below)
the impact Laureus has on the organisations it supports,
who now receive a broad package of Laureus support
spanning funding, software, tools, training and knowledge
exchanges such as Laureus Global Summits.

Laureus created InFocus with two collaborators –

help both funders and grassroots sports programmes to
track their social impact and use the information they
collect to support continuous internal learning. Ultimately
the aim is to help projects and their funders to understand
what works, what doesn’t and why.

GDM’s Vice President Chote Chikwandingwa explains: “Just
when I was about to give up on reporting to funders because
of the tiresome task of retrieving data from mountains of
papers, the InFocus software rescued me.”

“With the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter full of sports equipment,
we have succeeded in making the kids of Bola pra Frente
smile and have made them happy. I want to thank everyone
that made this project happen,” said a happy Franz about
the incredible support he had received.Together with Global
Partner Mercedes-Benz, Franz had asked all Germans to
donate their old football boots. It was their target to fill
the complete Sprinter with used shoes by the time of the
Laureus World Sports Awards.

supported the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation since its creation in 2000 and this
year Mercedes-Benz developed a special
campaign, together with their brand ambassador Franz
Beckenbauer, called ‘Football Boots for Rio’.
German football legend Franz made some dreams come
true for the young people as he brought a group of famous
friends with him, including Laureus Academy Member
Boris Becker and Ambassadors Jens Lehmann, Axel Schulz,
Sabine Christiansen, Ole Bischof and Michael Teuber – plus
a brand new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, filled with sports
equipment.
The response was overwhelming: children and parents, old
and young football players, as well as stars and football
professionals sent in their shoes. Even whole sport clubs
were supporting the project as a team. Over 1,300 pairs of
football boots were sent to Mercedes-Benz and at the end
they were able to fill up the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. They
reached their goal and the boots were exchanged for brand
new sports equipment which was given to the project.
Franz Beckenbauer and legendary Brazilian footballer Carlos
Alberto teamed up to present the Sprinter to the former
Brazilian soccer player Jorginho, who is the Patron of Bola
pra Frente. In an area of almost 12,000 square metres,
Bola pra Frente is working with street children between the
ages of six and 17. Soccer is used as a method to support
the children. They learn important things like team-spirit,
discipline, respect and strength of purpose and they finally
experience recognition for their achievements and effort.
This is what helps them in their daily fight against poverty,
discrimination and violence.
That is why Franz Beckenbauer was delighted to fulfil his
promise: he personally handed over the Sprinter to Bola pra
Frente and achieved his personal goal to make the children
smile. Franz said: “All the people of Germany that donated
their old football boots made this generous present possible.
I thank them.”

The Laureus Awards are the premier honours on the international
sporting calendar. Proceeds directly benefit and underpin the work of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The winners are chosen by the
Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of
46 of the greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen.

The crowd were lined several deep in the Praça
Floriano and their loud roars announced the
arrival of someone special.
All evening the noise from the sports-mad
aficionados outside the Laureus World Sports
Awards had waxed and waned as more than
100 of the most famous sportsmen and women
in the world had walked the red carpet outside
the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro
But this was Brazil, where football is king.
And this was Neymar. The brilliant 21-year-old,
then playing for Santos, waved and thanked the
onlookers as he headed for the auditorium.
His appearance was one of the highlights of
a scintillating Laureus World Sports Awards,
however on this occasion he was not a winner
as the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year
Award went to Andy Murray, not him, after
the British tennis player won an Olympic gold
medal and the US Open Grand Slam.
Two months later Neymar received his prize
with a transfer for a reported €50 million-plus
fee to FC Barcelona and now he will weave his
magic on a European stage. But on this warm
Rio evening, Neymar was the property of the
Brazilian fans and how they loved him.

Hosted by Hollywood stars Morgan Freeman and Eva
Longoria, the winners were unveiled at a globally televised
Awards Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, which included a third
Laureus Award for Jamaican sprint giant Usain Bolt, a triple
success for British sport with honours for Andy Murray,
Jessica Ennis and Sebastian Coe, and a special new Award for
Michael Phelps, the most successful Olympian of all time.

Usain Bolt was acclaimed Laureus World Sportsman of
the Year after his remarkable performance at the London
Olympics when he repeated his success in Beijing by
winning gold medals in all three sprint events in London –
the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay.

The Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award went to
Jessica Ennis, who carried the hopes of the British nation in
London. Despite the enormous pressure of being one of the
first on the track, she dominated the heptathlon and won the

Olympians who received special Laureus Awards.
Legendary swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated
Olympian of all time with a career total of 22 medals,
including 18 gold medals, eight of which he won in one
Olympiad in Beijing, was presented with a new Award – the
Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award.

And Laureus World Sports Academy Member Sebastian Coe,
the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the highly
successful London Olympic and Paralympic Games, received
the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award. Coe said: “Thank
you very much to the Academy. This is an extraordinary
honour. We all have that unshakeable belief that sport
can, and does, transform lives. So I very openly share
this with them, because it is the ethos that we all

Brazil’s Daniel Dias, aged 24, was once again the
outstanding swimmer of the Paralympic Games, winning six
individual gold medals in London, all in world record times.
It was an achievement which won him the Laureus World
Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award for the
second time.
The Laureus World Team of the Year Award was presented
to the European Ryder Cup Team after their thrilling golf
victory against the United States at Medinah, while Austrian
skydiver Felix Baumgartner, who became the first human to
go through the sound barrier when he made the highest ever
freefall from 39km (24 miles) over New Mexico in October
2012, received the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of
the Year Award.

I
t was a long way for Michael Phelps from the pristine stadium pools surrounded by cheering spectators, where he became the most decorated Olympian in history, to the sprawl of a favela in Rio de Janeiro.
But there was really no doubt that, having met some
remarkable young sports lovers there, it was just as inspiring
an experience.
Michael, who won 22 Olympic medals in his career,
including 18 gold medals, enjoyed every minute of his visit
to Rocinha, on the eve of the Laureus World Sports Awards,
though it must have been one of the most unusual settings
he had ever swum in.
Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha (Rocinha Sports Centre),
which was established in December 2010, is part of the
Rio 2016 Olympic Development Programme. It currently
benefits 4,500 people and offers 17 different sports, plus
providing social and health services for the community.
It does great things each day for the young people of the
area, but when it was opened no one ever imagined the
great Michael Phelps would be giving swimming lessons
there one day.
As he joined a large group of youngsters in the pool, Michael
said: “Coming to the Laureus World Sports Awards has given
me a great opportunity to visit Rocinha and get a feel for
what is going on here. I enjoyed meeting some of the kids
and I really feel sport is making a difference here.”

Michael lead a swimming clinic at Rocinha featuring
elements from the Michael Phelps Foundation’s ‘im’
programme. ‘im’ stands for individual medley, one of
Michael Phelps’ most celebrated events, and it also reflects
‘I am’ which is a focus of the approach of the programme
which tries to increase the self-confidence of the young
people who attend. He talked to some of the youngsters
about the basic principles of his Olympic success – Dream,
Plan, Reach.
At the Laureus Awards Ceremony Michael was presented
with a new Award – the Laureus Academy Exceptional
Achievement Award. He said: “This is all a dream come true
for me. I woke up with a dream as a kid to be the best that
I could be and to be able to win this Award is amazing. To
have the members of the Academy vote for this and give me
this, I’m really at a loss for words.”

Olympic gold one day and this was that first step towards
that.”
The cast list for these events was exceptional, none more
so than the Women in Sport symposium. No fewer than
four Laureus Academy Members, Nadia Comaneci, Cathy
Freeman, Tanni Grey-Thompson and Martina Navratilova,
took part. They were joined by Olympic medallist Donna
De Varona, Sue Campbell, Chairman of UK Sport, and

Just hours earlier the person responsible for staging those
London Olympics, Sebastian Coe, had shared a platform
with Carlos Nuzman, President of the Organising Committee
for the 2016 Summer Olympics to be hosted by Rio: the
two most influential men in the Olympic Games, past and
present, brought together by Laureus to discuss Olympic
legacy.
Laureus Academy Member Lord Coe, one of Britain’s
greatest Olympic athletes, used the occasion to confirm
the importance of sport in the education and overall
development of young people. He told how the London
Olympics had inspired boys and girls throughout the United
Kingdom.
Coe emphasised the synergy between Laureus and
the Olympic movement to emphasise the impact both
organisations can have on young lives. “Every opportunity
that we have to encourage young people to take up sport is
really important. The excitement generated by a really good
Games is the platform on which you build.”
Carlos Nuzman said: “I would like to thank members of the
Laureus family for being in Rio de Janeiro for this event. The
awarding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Rio de
Janeiro symbolises the understanding by the world of the
transformation sport can make possible. And this city will
serve as an example for other regions of the world.”

In the next major event, the topic switched from the positive
benefits of sporting legacy to a problem that sometimes
seems insoluble - the illegal use of performance enhancing
drugs. Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports
Academy and Chairman of the United States Anti-Doping
Agency (USADA) and Travis Tygart, Chief Executive of
USADA, joined Laureus Academy Member Steve Redgrave
and Marco Aurelio Klein, the head of Brazilian AntiDoping,
for the discussion.

Coming in the aftermath of the USADA report on retired
cyclist Lance Armstrong which resulted in him being given
a ban from the sport and having his Tour de France titles
withdrawn, the conclusion was that progress is being made
but there is still a long way to go.
Although the Awards Ceremony was held in Rio for the first
time in 2013, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has
been working there since 2003 and during the weekend
many Laureus Academy Members took the opportunity to
connect to the community while they were in the city.
Another of the highlights of the weekend was a football
debate involving World Cup stars Franz Beckenbauer, Bobby
Charlton and Vicente del Bosque, manager of the current
world champions Spain. Their discussion covered a variety of
topics including the forthcoming World Cup in Rio de Janeiro
in 2014. Beckenbauer and Charlton fondly recalled the 1966
World Cup Final when they played against each other.
New Zealand rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, Vice Chair
of the Laureus World Sports Academy, had Brazilian
youngsters dancing and chanting with delight as he brought
the ‘haka’ to the Luta Pela Paz community project supported
by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Rarely has the haka, an ancestral Maori greeting made
famous by the All Blacks rugby team, been performed
in more unusual surroundings than the courtyard of
Luta Pela Paz, a boxing and martial arts gymnasium in
Complexo da Maré situated far from the bright lights of
downtown Rio.
Luta Pela Paz (Fight for Peace) has proved an
overwhelming success in transforming the lives of
youngsters living in a community blighted by crime,
violence and drug abuse. Sean said: “It has been
wonderful to experience at first hand what is going on
here. What Fight for Peace is doing is tremendous and for
Laureus to be involved in that, in helping to change lives, is
what we’re all about. I’ve been inspired by w
hat I’ve seen.”
And Steve Redgrave, the legendary British rower who won
five gold medals at five successive Olympiads, joined
up with members of the local Botafogo rowing club in a
coxless fours on Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, the lake that
will host the 2016 Olympic rowing.
After being warmly applauded by 50 Botafogo rowers
upon arriving at their clubhouse, Redgrave said: “It is
a marvellous setting, It is very rare that rowing gets to
compete in the middle of a city. Spectators and rowers are
going to love it.”
Two new Laureus Ambassadors were named in Rio de
Janeiro - Spanish national football team manager Vicente
del Bosque and Chinese badminton superstar Lin Dan.

ust a few months into 2013 and the Foundation had already welcomed a host of exciting new
names into the family as Ambassadors all
dedicated to championing the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation message.
One of these names was Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach
André Villas-Boas, who visited the Laureus-supported Street
League project at one of their London bases in Kings Cross
in May. There he led a special training session for the project
members, even running some of his Spurs team’s favourite
training exercises in the process.
But like all Laureus-supported charity projects, it’s not about
the sport alone. The eight-week Street League Academy
programme, which is supported by the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation, delivers employability and life skills
training, with three out of every four graduates going on to
get a job or return to education.
André took time to chat with the participants, aged 16 to 24,
about what it means to be a great leader, and also to find
out more about how they are bettering their lives through
Street League at a time of such high youth unemployment.
One of those young people was Clark, who completed the
Street League training last year. Having graduated from the
project, Clark’s life has changed beyond recognition from
what it was before he joined.
Recalling life before he discovered Street League, he told
Laureus: “Toward the end of my time at school I started
bunking, I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. Things at
home weren’t good. I could see my mum was not happy with
the way I was.”

Then Clark found out about Street League during his search
for work having left school. Now, thanks to the opportunities
given to him at the project and the help he received in
building up his own CV, he has secured a position working
at a top London law firm. Now he has his eyes set firmly on
the future. And having worked for a year now in and around
lawyers, the profession is really sparking his interest.
“I’m looking into para-legal stuff… I’m really interested in
that and my supervisor is so supportive. I’m around good
people,” he said.
It’s a remarkable turn-around for the young man from north
London. But it is also one that Laureus and Street League
are helping bring about more and more often. As André
said: “The numbers are absolutely staggering - 76% of the
graduates go on to further education training or directly into
employment.
“To be able to pick up kids from prisons, job centres,
people that are in the most difficult situations that want
that breakthrough moment in their life but for some reason
or the other they can’t get it. … it’s great to see that Street
League are developing into other cities over the next years
and that Laureus are supporting them in this.”

The New Year kicked off to a great start as Ashes
winning cricket captain Michael Vaughan announced
he would be setting off on a UK-wide bike ride to raise
funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The Laureus Ambassador, who famously inspired
England to their memorable 2005 Ashes victory,
revealed he will be leading a team of charity fundraisers on a 12-day tour of England cricket grounds
to coincide with the One Day International series
against Australia from September 6–17. The ride will
also benefit the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to Shine
initiative, which promotes cricket across the UK.
Starting with the first One Day International at
Headingley in Leeds, Vaughan’s peloton will route via
Old Trafford in Manchester, Edgbaston in Birmingham,
the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff and the Ageas Bowl in
Southampton before finishing in London.
Vaughan said: “This is going to be a serious challenge,
but I am really looking forward to it. I’ll be cycling
462 miles over the 12 days and that is not going to be
easy, but these are two really good causes.”
Michael launched his cycle ride at Lord’s, the Home of
Cricket, where he was supported by current England
women’s cricket stars Lydia Greenway and Susie
Rowe. But the Laureus Ambassador is also recruiting
star names to join him on the ride, including Olympic
cycling great Victoria Pendleton, British tennis star
Tim Henman, England footballer Jamie Redknapp and
former England cricketers Phil Tufnell and Andrew
Strauss. But he doesn’t want to stop there.

must seem like a long way from Kyalami or Silverstone. The
man is Laureus Academy Member Mika Häkkinen and he
was in this unusual position in June as he took part in the
Laureus ‘Amazing Race’ through the streets of Durban.

IN SOUTH AFRICA
The event was put on with the support of Mercedes-Benz
in South Africa, and featured 35 cars with teams of 4 per
car. Several of the cars contained leaders from the Laureus
YES programme (Youth Empowerment through Sports), a
remarkable leadership training programme that enjoyed
its second year in 2013. Starting at the Mercedes-Benz
dealership in Umhlanga, the race went through Durban
in several stages, stopping at the end of each leg where a
challenge or task was given to each team before they were
given clues for the next destination.
MIKA HÄKKINEN
Talking after the event, Mika made it clear the altogether
unusual Segway challenge had a very real purpose. He said:
“You can’t see where you are going and your team members
have to help and guide you around the track. Left and right. It
helps teach trust between all of the team. It was fascinating.”
This Segway experience is just an example of the exercises the
YES programme teaches young people to help improve their
life skills and even employment opportunities.
Asked about the young YES leaders he met, Mika said:
“They’re smart, eager to challenge themselves in the future,
and eager to listen, which is so important. They want to
succeed and are so happy to be a part of Laureus to achieve
this. These young leaders are unsung heroes for the work
they do in their communities. By staging this race we also hope to let people know more about what Laureus is doing
in South Africa.”

SPECIAL OLYMPICS PROJECT PARTICIPANTS
Alexey Nemov may be more familiar with the Olympic medal
podium than the speaker’s podium, but that did not stop the
Laureus World Sports Academy Member from delivering a
much appreciated key note speech in April to the 76th AIPS
Congress in Sochi, host city for the 2014 Winter Olympic
Games.
Alexey, one of the most popular gymnasts of all time, who
won 12 Olympic medals including four gold, was the special
guest speaker at the Congress of the International Sports
Journalists Association (AIPS).

Laureus is the official charity partner of the AIPS and many
prominent international and Russian sports journalists
were present to hear Alexey’s speech, for which he received
a commemorative award. In his comments, he said: “I am
very excited to be in Sochi where in 2014 we will have what I
know will be a wonderful Winter Olympic Games.
“Since I have become a Laureus Academy Member, I have
been on several visits to projects where we are helping young
people. I always find it very inspiring. When you walk into a
room full of kids, coaches, teachers, parents, and often the
wider community, it is very exciting. I would like to thank
all the members of the AIPS who every year tell the story
of what Laureus is doing around the world to help young
people.”
Alexey is an enthusiastic supporter of the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation and three months earlier had visited
a Moscow-based Laureus-supported project along with
newest Laureus Ambassadors, Olympic gold medal winning
synchronised swimmers Elvira Khasyanova, Daria Korobova
and Anzhelika Timanina.

Spirit of Sport has boasted a sports-packed - but also
glamorous – schedule in the first half of 2013. Laureus’
monthly sports magazine programme, intended to reflect
the year-round work of Laureus, its Ambassadors, the
Academy and – crucially – the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, is now seen by over 25 million viewers each
month.
Exclusive content also includes interviews (including tennis
star Ana Ivanovic), joining Bobby Charlton on a visit to the
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’s project in Hong Kong
as well as following Academy Member Ian Botham as he
walks across Sri Lanka to raise funds for the Foundation.

Following on from the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards,
Spirit of Sport has continued to uncover the importance
of sport in Rio de Janeiro with regular Brazilian themed
packages. From riding the waves with legendary surfer,
Pedro Scooby, to skateboarding with the professionals
through the favelas and the city, the packages highlight the
passion for sport across the city.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Martina Navratilova was in Paris to
give Spirit of Sport an exclusive interview and it was access
all areas as Spirit of Sport took viewers behind the scenes to
preview the preparations for the 2013 Formula One Season.
