Everyone from the employees to the folks who rode in for the music is always so nice at Space Coast Harley-Davidson. The terrible day Islamic terrorists murdered 2977 innocent people. Every year we have ceremonies remembering and praying for these victims. At 8:46 AM we have a moment of silence. After we have paid respect to those who died on that day with our silence and prayers, we need to look at the rest of the story. It’s time to change our silence into shouts & screams. Islamic terrorism started long before there was an Israel or the United States. As far back as the 1700s Islam has hated the West. Islam blames the crusades, the Jews, Western culture, and Christians for their fall from power. Truth is they are their own cause of destruction. They are extremely brutal and patient. They know in time that because of the weakness of our politicians they can do a lot more damage by waiting. Let’s take a look at the damage they have done. Since 2001 we have entered into two wars with almost 7000 casualties, 52,000 wounded, and 970,000 veteran claims for disability. 2600 NY Firefighters, Police, EMTs, sanitation workers, and volunteers have had extreme health problems. Not to mention the Trillions of $. Lately there has been a lot of talk about making “America Great Again”. America has always been “Great”. It is the politicians that are taking the greatness and throwing it in the dumpster. We spend more money on illegal aliens, than we do our Veterans. Obama has slashed more than 1.4 billion from the budget for American’s veterans. 70,000 fewer veterans will receive the VA care they need. Obama has said he wants to grant amnesty to 5 million illegal aliens, while cutting military spending to veterans by a staggering 65%. This executive action will be giving out a year’s worth of Medicaid coverage and cash, costing US taxpayers 97.8 million, money which would be taken from the VA. Obama stated, it’s important to give these immigrants a footstool to help them climb out of substandard conditions they been facing. He’s right. We need to give them a foot in the ass hard enough to send them home. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) summed it up perfectly. It’s absurd. Taking money away from veterans who served his country bravely and proudly, and handing it over to people who aren’t even American citizens. It’s insulting to know this man is still president. Actually his actions are not hard to believe. He’s been dissing the military since he’s taken office. He skipped the funeral of the highest-ranking officer to be killed on foreign soil in over 40 years. He’s been smearing Veterans as potential domestic terrorists. He has tried making wounded Veterans cover their own medical treatment through private insurance plans. He gave terrorists at Gitmo a $750,000 soccer field, cable TV, entertainment, classes in painting, etc. while stripping away benefits for soldiers. He silenced and criminalized Christianity in the military. He’s allowed Veterans to die in secret waiting lists at VA hospitals all over the country. He endlessly tramples on the Constitution that soldiers are sworn to defend and attacking the rights they fought, bled and died to protect. Obama has no challengers. The voters gave the GOP the House and the Senate and what did they get? Mitch McConnell the Senate’s designated liar from Kentucky and Speaker John Boehner who can’t speak up unless he’s ordering a drink at happy hour. If chastised he will start crying. If NASA wants to send people to Mars I’ve got some real spaced out x-wives I’d recommend. I have a lot more to say about this and other subjects on my website nobodiesopinion.com See you on the shiny side of tomorrow. Not when Twisted Tea is involved! This year at the Sturgis 75th anniversary Twisted Tea not only gave away one bike but TWO bikes to lucky consumers. The first bike was a 1974 ironhead Sportster that was built by our friends at The Choppin Block. The Choppin Block is a group of builders that got together to do what they love the most- build bikes! Chop Docs Choppers (From Michigan now out of Daytona) Turners Cycle Shop, Kustoms Inc and Doomtown Choppers all played a role in getting this little bar hopper going. We gave the bike away at Steve Broyle’s The Horse Back Street Choppers show at Full Throttle Saloon. What made this bike giveaway special was that it was free to enter for anyone over 21 and the drawing happened right there on the spot that day. The ballot box was overflowing with entries! When it was time to draw a name we had two (unlucky) entrants whose names were called but they never came to the stage so too bad for them! Three times a charm is true because the 3rd name we drew was Rodney Roerhig from Iowa City, Iowa and boy was he happy! As he approached the stage with a Twisted Tea in hand we knew we had the right guy! This story almost didn’t have a happy ending…At the end of this busy day I went home and emptied my pockets of all the receipts and business cards I get all day and realized there was something missing…Rodney’s contact information! Luckily Rodney called up The Horse and they put him in touch with us…Otherwise there would have been posters all over Sturgis that said “Rodney from Iowa call Twisted Tea we have your bike!” 20 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE FLORIDA SEPTEMBER 2015 The second bike giveaway we did was at One Eyed Jack’s. This was in conjunction with a national “text to win” a trip to Sturgis and a chance to win the bike. The bike was a ’72 FLH shovel head which we named “Tea Bagger” because hey it’s Twisted Tea and it’s a bagger…no brainer! We had the ballot box at One Eyed all week long and there were many entries. On Thursday afternoon we picked 6 ballots out of the box and called the contestants to let them know they were chosen as finalists. One Eyed Jacks is always busy and this night was no different. With the bar packed and the crowd waiting in anticipation each contestant came up and picked one of 6 keys out of a bucket. First one…nuthin… second guy (who won the trip to Sturgis)… nuthin…Once again 3 time’s a charm and the 3rd contestant Eric Hess from Buffalo New York had the key that fired the bike! Just like Rodney he was a long time Tea drinker so we knew the right guys got the bikes and nothing could make us happier than making our loyal drinkers happy! This was the first time we did something like this and felt it was a great success. We plan on doing it again so who knows the next winner could be YOU! History of Motorcycles: Part 6 World War I had a dramatic effect on the motorcycle industry, but just as the war had successfully thrust the industry ahead by leaps and bounds, the post war economy would prove to be detrimental to the motorcycle world and its advancement. To fully understand the effects the post war economy had on the industry, we must first fully grasp the situation the United States was in following the success of WWI. Several years into America’s post war era, the financial integrity of our country would collapse. October 24, 1929 would forever become known as Black Thursday, the day stocks plummeted and banks began calling in loans…the beginning of the Great Depression. By mid-November an estimated $30 billion in stock values had all but disappeared. By March 1930 more than 3.2 million people are unemployed. In December 1931 New York’s Bank of the United States collapses while holding over $200 million in deposits, making it the largest single bank failure in American history. Nationwide conditions continued to break down and US citizens suffered greatly until the Second World War, when things finally began to turn around for the United States. So what happened to our beloved two-wheeled lifestyle during the chaos of the Great Depression? Following the stock market crash, motorcycle sales in the United States plummeted. We will revisit a few key players from previous segments, and see where they end up by the end of this devastating era in American history. The first victim of the Great Depression was Excelsior. Excelsior was operating successfully during the war, and consistently filling orders. The Super X was making the company money, and things were good. Previously purchased by the bicycle guru known as Schwinn, it seemed Excelsior would be a household name for years to come. So imagine the surprise to everyone when Schwinn called his department heads together for a meeting on a summer day in 1931 and announced, without any prior warning, that the company would be closing 24 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE FLORIDA SEPTEMBER 2015 its doors. It was said he stated very bluntly, “Gentleman, today we stop.” I can imagine the shock, that despite a full order book, Schwinn chose to cease motorcycle production…Excelsior closed its doors in September of 1931. Triumph, though located on the other side of the pond, was also greatly affected by the post war economy. In 1929 Triumph sold its German subsidiary as a separate, independently owned company that would later merge with the Adler Company to create the Triumph-Adler Company. In 1932 Triumph sold another branch of its company (the bicycle production portion) to the Raleigh Bicycle Company; by this time Triumph is struggling financially to stay afloat. By 1936 motorcycle operations are faring better due to the acquisition of Jack Sangster. Sangster formed the Triumph Engineering Company LTD, and with the help of Edward Turner designed the Triumph Speed Twin (500 cc) in 1937. This engine became the basis for all Triumph Twins until the 1980’s, and kept Triumph from dissolving completely during the Great Depression. Though the company survived by the skin of its teeth, it did not emerge unscathed, but rather as bits and pieces of its former self…so in the famous words of Freddie Mercury…another one bites the dust. Indian Motorcycles on the other hand, maintained a respectable success rate following WWI. During the Great Depression, Indian did not claim rights to any extraordinary advancement in the motorcycle world, but instead turned its focus towards styling updates and cosmetic improvements with the hopes of maintaining customer interest in the face of declining sales. Who doesn’t love a pretty face?? In 1932 Indian introduced skirted fenders, a long graceful chain guard, as well as a saddle tank that hid the frame… this foretold the profile of the “modern” motorcycle. In 1934 Indian chose a streamlined, automotive styling to its model line. Lightly valanced fenders were given deeper side panels, and two-tone paint schemes became available on most models. the 80 cubic inch (1300 cc) Flathead to their line in 1935; 1936 brought more changes to the industry with Harley’s announcement of the 61E and 61EL models. These models boasted the Knucklehead OHV engines, and by the end of the first year of production these babies had been road tested and improved upon as well. By 1937 Harley had equipped all Flatheads with the same type of dry-sump oil recirculation systems introduced on the Knucklehead OHVs. The revised 74 cubic inch V and VL models were renamed U and UL; the 45 cubic inch R model became the W, while the 80 cubic inch VH and VHL were renamed UH and UHL. The only American motorcycle company to continue to introduce advancements during the post war years was Harley Davidson. In 1922, the new 74 cubic inch (1212 cc) V-Twin was completed. Harley introduced the “teardrop” gas tank in 1925; 1928 brought about the addition of a front brake, but notably only on the J/JD models. In 1929, the 45 cubic inch (737 cc) Flathead V-Twin was announced. The Flathead was designed to compete with the Indian 101 Scout and the Excelsior Super X…this was the “D” model, and remained in production until 1931. Indian riders referred to the “D” model as the “3 cylinder Harley” because the generator was upright and parallel to the front cylinder. The Great Depression was in full swing only a few short months after the release of the Flathead V-Twin, and with it came a dramatic drop in sales. Harley Davidson sales in the United States fell from 21,000 in 1929 to a meager 3,703 in 1933. In the face of such loss, Harley did not back down. The company instead raised a proud middle finger to the economy and waved it for all to see…unveiling a new line up for 1934 that included a Flathead engine and art deco styling. In order to survive the remainder of the depression, Harley supplemented their income by producing industrial power plants based on their motorcycle engines. They also designed and built a 3 wheeled delivery vehicle called the “Servi-car”, which incidentally remained in production until 1973. The Servi-car became a mainstay of small businesses, vendors, and delivery drivers for decades to come. As if Harley hadn’t done enough in such difficult times, they also added During the course of the Great Depression, Indian and Harley Davidson began a long-lived and well known rivalry that continued until Indian closed its doors in 1953. Despite the hardships cast upon the United States after the First World War, Indian and Harley Davidson survived…they were the only two American motorcycle companies left standing. But why did they succeed where others did not? Their survival is due in part to having strong dealer networks, continued product use by the military, police, and postal services, as well as strong exports to Canada and Europe…combined, and these factors allowed them to weather the economic disaster that followed WWI. September 1, 1939 brought about the start of WWII. The war in essence turns around the American economy and brings an end to the Great Depression…and with the Second World War comes yet another section of motorcycle history to uncover. Melanie Schwarte ~ Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Sturgis 2015! Ron Woodruff of Buffalo Chip & South Dakota Lt. Governor Matt Michels 26 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE FLORIDA SEPTEMBER 2015 Sturgis 2015! by Deborah Speicher This year was the 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and estimates had the record crowds at about one million. Regardless of whether they really hit the one million mark, the roads, bars, stores, restaurants, campgrounds and other venues were packed! We took advantage of some of the great events sponsored by the Buffalo Chip, starting with Michael Lichter’s photography and motorcycle exhibit the “Naked Truth.” Michael, along with some of the motorcycle builders, did a great gallery talk about the motorcycles and he gave us some history on his photos. The next day we rode into Deadwood for the Legends Ride, proceeds of which benefitted local charities which included athletes from the Black Hills Special Olympics. John Paul DeJoria at Legends Ride The very next day we headed out to The Lodge at Deadwood for the Biker Belles Celebration. This event benefitted the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame and Helping with Horsepower. The keynote speaker was motorcycle matriarch Gloria Tramontin Struck, who recently turned 90 years old! Gloria is still loving and living life on two wheels. As in many years past, she rode her motorcycle from home (New Jersey) to Sturgis and back. Paul & Suzy Jaffe at Legends Ride There were so many bike shows, concerts, organized rides and more that you wish you could clone yourself and not miss a thing! But, since it really is all about the riding, we did spend a few days to ride to Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower (Wyoming), Custer State Park, and The Badlands with a short stop at Wall Drug for our free water, free donut and 5cent coffee. To sum up our entire trip to the Black Hills, the riding and views were spectacular, and what a nice break from the Florida heat and rain. 28 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE FLORIDA SEPTEMBER 2015 Sturgis Biker Belles Michael Lichter at Naked Truth Exhibit Fannies & fenders 2016OPENMODEL YEAR HOUSE SATURDAY, SEPT 5TH • 9AM-6PM & SUNDAY, SEPT 6TH • 11AM-5PM CHECK OUT THE ALL-NEW 2016 MODEL LINE UP, GEAR AND ACCESSORIES ALL DESIGNED FOR THE EXPERIENCE OF LIFE ON THE OPEN ROAD.
