natural ingredients. To enhance
this life force, we use biodynamic
methods in our gardens, rejecting
chemical pesticides, fertilizers
and GM ingredients, while
embracing everything that

we plant, nurture and harvest
every seed with love in harmony
with the seasons, surrounding
plants, insects, birds and even

From the moment our head
gardener, Michael Bate, judges
a crop to be ready we are on a
countdown to harness this power
before it wanes. At exactly the
right moment, our gardeners
will harvest the whole plant, or
just the leaves, or blossom, or
root. The crop is transported
just a few miles to our tincturemaking facilities where it is
washed and prepared by hand
ready to be made into effective
treatments. Picking to processing
takes place as quickly as
possible to preserve the very
life force of each plant.
Our unique processes
Depending on the individual plant, special methods are used to capture the plant ‘essence’.
These range from the simplest - where it is infused with naturally fermented alcohol and water
- through to more complex procedures in which the processing and temperature of extraction
are specifically tailored to the creation of each individual formula. Throughout these processes,
the therapeutic application of the product plays a crucial role in determining the methods
we use.
Once the process is complete, the tincture
is separated from the plant material by
pressing and filtering, with the residual plant
material returned to the herb garden for
composting. Each tincture is tested for purity
before it can be included within a product.
Once released for use, it may go on to be
made into one-off medicines for individual
customers or to production where we will
use it to make a batch of product, for
example our Calendolon Ointment or the
Weleda Calendula skincare range for babies.

Where ‘like cures like’
Weleda also manufactures Homeopathic
remedies. Developed by Dr Samuel Hahnemann
in the 18th century, homeopathy also follows
a holistic approach to good health stimulating
the body’s natural ability to cure itself.
Its guiding principle is to choose a remedy that
would produce similar symptoms to those
you wish to treat, i.e. ‘like cures like’. Each
remedy is created by a series of dilution and
shaking processes to produce a minimum
‘potentised’ dose.
‘Which strength?’
Over the counter homeopathic preparations
are generally available in two strengths:
6c and 30c.
6c Potencies
In most self-help cases 6c should be
selected. 6c is useful when conditions are
mainly physical, such as coughs and colds,
or when the condition progresses at a
slow pace.
30c Potencies
30c is selected when the condition is very
active (acute) and/or when there is an
emotional element to the condition, such
as occasional sleeplessness. 30c remedies

In the past, sea buckthorn berries grew
wild throughout the Fruili region of
Italy, Swiss Misox and the French
southern Alps. However, as these areas
became increasingly developed, these
berries became less common. For
over 10 years Weleda has worked in

Tuscany where sea buckthorn berries
are now grown prolifically on nearly 200
