For at least ten years, Ikki had allowed the club to use his beautiful designs on a series of collectable Arts & Crafts Fair t-shirts with sales proceeds helping the club fund many of our Rotary projects. Ikki along with his wife Polly have participated as vendors at the fair for more than ten years and added to the reputation of this Fair as one of the best in Southwest Florida gaining the attention of many fellow artists, craftsmen and Fair attendees for the quality of work presented at the Fair. To honor Ikki a new Best of Show award was presented at the juried Fair this year. First place blue ribbons in three categories were presented: Booth 11 Marilyn Vaillancourt-Jewelry, Booth 84 Christine Reichow-Painting, and Booth 100 John Thomas Herbon-Pottery. From these three first place winners the overall Best of Show award was presented to John Thomas Herbon by Polly Matsumoto, Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club President, Scott Congress and Rotary Arts & Crafts Juried Committee Chair, Robert Monk. As a complete surprise after the Best of Show presentation club President, Scott Congress presented a beautiful Luc Century vase to Polly Matsumoto from the SanibelCaptiva Rotary inscribed with a special appreciation dedication in memory of Ikki. Club Fellowship Evening ...ROTARY THEATER NIGHT... Join your Rotary friends at the Strauss Theater, Sanibel to see the extremely thought provoking playDefamation by playwright, Todd Logan. Date ...Thursday, February 27 Time...7:00 PM - Private Garden Reception for Rotarians 8:00 PM - Curtain Call Defamation Group Discounted Ticket Cost...$37 DEFAMATION Preconceived notions of race, class, ethnicity, and religion can color our observations of the world around us. The ideas we carry around with us are not always actual truths. All of us are guilty of some form of prejudice. ARTS & CRAFTS PICTURES WILL BE POSTED ON WEB-SITE WWW.sanibelrotary.org The play Defamation is presented as a courtroom drama; an African American woman is suing a Jewish real estate developer for Defamation of Character. That premise alone can stimulate preconceived thought activity toward one side or the other in this case. That is exactly what Todd wants to examine. Todd said, “Watching the testimony in this case and observing the lawyers questioning the witnesses is like a tennis match…point one side and point other side”. What is the actual truth and what is the perceived truth and why? The twist is that the audience is sitting as the jury and they will be voting on the verdict. After the verdict is rendered the audience gets a chance to engage with the playwright and actors in a discussion about the play and why this verdict may have been reached.
