Tonight, we honor the blood donors who began donating blood many years ago, and have donated so consistently that they’ve reached remarkable milestones in their donation history. For some, this is their first milestone, and for others this is another in a long line of successes. Tonight we also celebrate our donor chairpersons, who saw an opportunity at their businesses, churches, community groups or schools to organize blood drives and inspire others to save lives in our communities. The selflessness, dedication and generosity of our donors, donor chairs, groups and employees are the heart strings of the Community Blood Bank. Without you we would not be who we are, and for that we celebrate you! Thank you! 1 Community Blood Bank Board of Directors Natalie Dwyer-Haller, Esq. Throughout the last 50 years, these three words have been a business strategy, a directive, and, most importantly, a philosophy. In 1966, it was probably difficult to imagine all the changes Community Blood Bank would see as we grew from one small location in Erie. But 50 years doesn’t happen by accident – it’s the result of every new donor who acts on their desire to help; every regular donor who makes time in their day; and every staff member who has an idea for a better way. The Community Blood Bank isn’t the location at 26th & Peach St. – it’s the generosity and ingenuity of all the people in the CBB family. In an industry that is everchanging, CBB is proud to be moving forward in the best interests of our generous donors, our partner hospitals and the patients who rely on all of us when life hangs in the balance. In Collections The ability to provide the right blood product at the right moment has become key in the blood banking world, and CBB staff have focused on ensuring that the specific needs of our partner hospitals are met every day. As such, the Collections Dept. has ushered in new technology that will help each and every donor give in the most meaningful way possible. In House Executive Director Steve Beeler moved on from his position at the Community Blood Bank in April 2016. While he was with the blood bank for only 2.5 years, his leadership and vision have brought CBB into a position of strength and success for years to come. We wish Steve all the best as the search to fill his shoes continues. In Our Lab Our laboratory is one spoke in the CBB wheel. The laboratory staff pride themselves on working with donors and CBB staff as a team. Their main focus is ensuring that your donations are processed, stored and delivered to those in our community who are in need of your vital and precious gifts. This past year presented many changes and challenges in the laboratory. Our professional staff members braved each with confidence, and they continue to improve our processes to ensure the safety, purity and potency of your donation. The laboratory staff would like to thank all of our donors for their continued commitment to our community and are humbled by their demonstration of sincere generosity. 5 With the addition of Senita Brkic, our new Donor Operations Program Supervisor, the Collections Staff has done a tremendous job ushering in new platelet technology in the form of the Trima. Through this technology, our amazing platelet donors have substantially increased the availability of platelets to our partner hospitals. In addition, we’ve brought in new donation scales to help streamline the collection process for our phlebotomists, and even though donors may not have noticed them, the scales also help monitor the donation. Finally, in June, staff will be learning new Double-Red Cell technology, which will help us to better sustain inventory of those elusive negative blood types. The Community Blood Bank also welcomes Jennifer Stephany to the CBB family. Jen started in April as our new Donor Collections Manager, and will work closely with both Collections and Recruitment staff under the newly formed umbrella of Donor Services, headed by director, Deanna Renaud. This realignment of departments will better serve donors through enhanced customer service and communication. Finally, we want to offer special thanks to Donor Collections Supervisor Chris Koszegi for all her time and dedication this past year. Chris has done an outstanding job helping her team navigate all the changes, and we truly appreciate all that she has done for the blood bank. We look forward to hearing Chris’ infectious laugh at CBB for many years to come! 6 Community Blood Bank News & Notes Community Blood Bank News & Notes In Recruitment The Recruitment Dept. has made it a priority to grow the next generation of blood donors. While students can begin donating blood at age 16 with parental consent, it’s crucial to teach them about the importance of donating blood at an even younger age. During our first annual Finding Faithful Donors Campaign in the summer of 2015, Deanna found a new partner in Grace Church, who held bloods drive simultaneously at all 3 campuses, resulting in over 50 units collected and 20 new donors! We have already been busy planning our second annual blood drive with them this year. During the last year, Deanna Rosenthal, our Erie County Mobile Drive Coordinator, designed a K-12 school presentation to teach kids about the components of blood in our body, the functions of each, the compatibility of blood types, and of course, the need for donors in our communities. The lesson sets up the opportunity for elementary- and middle-school students to host a blood drive for teachers, faculty and family, and teaches them about donating blood long before their high school blood drives. It also gives eligible high school students the opportunity to have a successful, rewarding donation experience. Northwest Pennsylvania Region The NWPA region includes Elk, McKean and Warren counties, and Titusville in Crawford County. Shari Jerman has been the Mobile Drive Coordinator since March 2001. Shari continues to work on increasing collections in her region with 5 new donor groups in 2015: Elcam Inc., St. Marys, PA; Warren Manor, Warren, PA; Titusville High School, Titusville, PA; Warren County Sheriff’s Office- Holiday Heroes Drive, Warren, PA; and Youngsville Police & Fire Departments-Holiday Heroes Drive, Youngsville, PA. In addition, we’ve held several family-themed promotions and look forward to more family-themed events this summer. Our new, unofficial tagline “Help Your Family Join Our Family” has appeared on posters and social media, as we ask our existing donors to share the reasons why they donate and help inspire the younger members of their families to become blood donors, too. Erie Region In addition to her work on the education program, Deanna Rosenthal has added three new schools (Erie Institute of Technology, EUP’s Porreco Center and Cambridge Springs High School) this school year, and was able to return a former partner (Strong Vincent High School) back to the rotation – all of this resulted in more than 250 units this past year! 7 Shari continues to successfully manage the Double Red Cell program in her region, recruiting those much-needed blood types at crucial times and helping CBB supply our partner hospitals with the units they need at the moment they need them. Western New York Region In 2015, Kathy Hastings added blood drives with 6 new Amish Communities within her territory. These drives are proving to be successful and one has the potential to grow into another Cherry Creek blood drive, where we consistently see an average of 90 Amish donors, six times per year. One high school, in particular, went above and beyond. Gowanda High School collected 200 pints of blood this school year. They held both school and community blood drives to meet this goal 200 will receive two $500 scholarships to award to students of their choosing. Kathy continues to work to expand our donor base in Venango and Mercer Counties. A total of 18 new drives were added this8 past year throughout her territory, which spans Chautauqua County in New York State, as well as Mercer and Venango counties in Pennsylvania. Community Blood Bank News & Notes In addition, Gowanda High School was named Donor Group of the Year in the WNY region because of its outstanding support of the local blood supply. They are already preparing for next year. Kathy continues to work to expand our donor base in Venango and Mercer Counties. A total of 18 new drives were added this past year throughout her territory, which spans Chautauqua County in New York State, as well as Mercer and Venango counties in Pennsylvania. PANY Region Lora Cope has served as Mobile Drive Coordinator of the “PANY” region (a combination of “PA” and “NY”) since 2011. Her territory includes Potter and Tioga counties, Emporium community in Cameron County, Smethport Community in McKean County and Allegany County in New York State. Community Blood Bank News & Notes In other news from Galeton High School, Mrs. Ellen Moon, our long time donor chair and faithful donor, retired from Galeton High school. We are grateful to all that Mrs. Moon did for us, and are always pleased to see her as she continues to support us in her retirement. This year, the PANY Region also saw some changes to community based drives, beginning with the Angelica Fire Department in Angelica, NY who began hosting a community blood drive for Angelica and surrounding Amish communities. As such. We have seen an overall increase in the total number of units collected at this blood drive. Great job all around! We are also pleased to announce that both Port Allegany High School and Port Allegany Fire Hall have transitioned from hosting blood drives with the American Red Cross to hosting them with Community Blood Bank. Welcome to the family Port Allegany! This was a big year for awards in our PANY Region. In November James Querry, our Student Donor Chair at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa. was inducted into the Fresenius Kabi National Hall of Fame for donors and volunteers. During his time as Student Donor Chair (a position created by the PANY region last year), James helped to double the amount of units collected at Mansfield University’s blood drives. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors! In addition to James, Morgan Petrencsik who started donating when she was 16 years old, graduated from Galeton High School with a total of 12 donations which is equivalent to 1.5 gallons, and was awarded a scholarship from CBB by her school. We wish Morgan all the best in her future endeavors! 9 10 Gallon Achievements 25 Gallon Robert Bird Richard Fitzsimmons Rosann Wheeler 20 Gallon Richard Caldwell John Hollingshead Melvin Knauff Kathy Love Gene Natale Michael Owens Linda Pinter Steven Salow Kenneth Smith Kenneth Witt 11 15 Gallon Kathy Allin Douglas Anderson Jack Benson Mark Bruns Peter Danielewicz David Decarolis Natalie Dwyer-Haller David Eddinger Roger Fenton David Johnson Charles Kobel Gary Krugger Doris Lake Susanne Liebel Kathy Martin Richard Marzka Dennis McAndrew Debra McCracken Darrell Mook Edward Neuburger Emil Petak Richard Pheasant Shirley Pytlarz Kenneth Reisenweber J.
