ATHLETE GUIDE
A WELCOME FROM PILOT/FLYING J
On behalf of the over 20,000 Pilot Flying J employees in the
USA and Canada, I welcome you to the City of Portland and
the State of Oregon! I am confident you will find the people
of Portland and all of Oregon to be hospitable, open and
friendly. The natural beauty of this area makes for a superior backdrop for your triathlon and I hope you are able to enjoy the vistas and the impressions, even as you
compete.
When Pilot Flying J was considering our sponsorship for the 2012 season, we were excited about your brand
loyalty. Rev3 Cedar Point and Rev3 Anderson champion Andy Starykowicz told us that in thanks for our
sponsorship, he decided to fuel and stop only at Pilot Flying J as he drove back and forth across the country. We hope that you will
make the same decision as Andy and patronize our Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J Travel Plazas across the United States and
Canada. Here are some ways you can do that:
SIGN UP FOR OUR PREFERRED CUSTOMER MYREWARDS CARD: Follow the directions at myrewards.pilotflyingj.com to register your card you received in your registration packet. If you did not receive one,
you may pick one up at any participating Pilot or Flying J location. If you own an RV, be sure to sign up for
that program, which has some great benefits for the RV traveler. Registering enables you to receive all of our
exclusive deals and rewards!
DOWLOAD THE MYPILOT APP: We have invested in this app which we hope you will find very useful as you travel
throughout the year. Plan your route, plan your stops and get lots of information to improve your experience.
SWIPE YOUR CARD: Once you have registered your card, be intentional about swiping those cards when you fuel,
and about scanning that card for in-store purchases! We really hope to learn a lot about
our Rev3 customers, where you come from, where you go, what you buy. This will help
us tailor special deals and opportunities to improve your experiences throughout the
2012 season.
We are eager to compete to earn your loyalty with the same passion for excellence that
you possess in competing in these events. Once again, thank you for making Pilot Flying J your travel stop on your way to Rev3 events, on your business or family travels,
and even on your daily commutes. We are deeply appreciative of your support and are
delighted to support Rev3 and the sport of Triathlons.

Competitor Responsibilities
When you pick up your race packet and timing chip at athlete
check-in, stop by the chip verification table to ensure that your
correct name shows up on the computer screen.
You must wear your timing chip at all times while you are
racing. Fasten it to either ankle with the Velcro strap provided
before the swim and leave it on until after you finish the run.
Volunteers will help you remove the chip at the finish line. If
you do not start the race, you are responsible for returning the
chip to timing. If you drop out or are pulled from the race at any
time, turn in your chip to a race official. Failure to do so may
disqualify you from participating in future Rev3 events.
It is essential that we know where you are on the course at
all times for your safety and our peace of mind. If you are
transported to any medical station, the medical staff will
take responsibility for your chip. Your race chip is a loaner.
By picking up your race number and timing chip, you are
guaranteeing that you will return the chip to timing, or you will
be billed for its replacement.
There is a $90 replacement fee for any lost or damaged timing
chips. If you lose your timing chip during the event, you are
responsible for a replacement at one of the following locations:
swim exit, bike exit or run exit. Race staff will have extra timing
chips at the timing locations above. If you lose your timing
chip while on the run course, please notify a timing official
immediately after crossing the finish line. Failure to wear your
timing chip on race day, return your chip after the event or pay
the replacement cost of your lost chip may disqualify you from
future Rev3 events.
NO CHIP = NO TIME
RACE DAY PARKING
Parking will be available at Blue Lake Park only. A $5 fee will be required on BOTH Saturday and Sunday. The park will open at 8am
on Saturday and at 6am on Sunday.
If you are coming to check out the course Wednesday through Friday you will be able to park for free at Blue Lake Park, providing
your stay is under thirty minutes.

of these items, please see the transition area director for a replacement. During packet pick up, you will be given temporary tattoo

Race Tattoos
We want you to look good while racing with Rev3. You will notice in your packet pickup that
we have given everyone tattoo’s for your body marking for race day. Make sure you put these on
BEFORE race morning. THERE WILL BE NO BODY MARKING ON RACE MORNING.
Simple procedure, you should have been given 2 tattoos with your bib number on them. These
two numbers go on the upper part of your arm between your shoulder and elbow. To apply these
tattoos, REMOVE THE PLASTIC SHEET first. Place one bib number on your right arm and
the other bib number tattoo on your left arm. Use a wet cloth to dampen the area around the
tattoo. Once the tattoo is damp, remove the paper. Instant tattoo!
You were also instructed to get your age. These tattoos will go on your right calf. Make sure you put your age vertical on your leg. If
you are competing in a relay you will add the R to the bottom of your age. You put these tattoos on following the instructions listed
above. Take off the plastic coating, place the tattoo on your body and damped the back. Hold a damp cloth on the tattoo for about 30
seconds and you should be good to go without having a stranger write on you at 6:30am!
To remove the tattoo’s you can use rubbing alcohol, baby oil, or nail polish remover.

ATHLETE GUIDE
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD REFEREE
Welcome to this USA Triathlon sanctioned event. You are racing under the
USAT Competitive Rules. In order to minimize misunderstandings on race day,
I hope you will take the time to read the following summary of the Position
Violations, which you know as the drafting rules.
• I have reduced the Position Rules to the following concepts, which everyone
can remember:
• Ride on the right side of your lane.
• Keep three bike lengths between yourself and the cyclist in front of you.
• Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
• Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
• If passed, you must drop completely out of the zone, to the rear, before
attempting to re-pass.
Remember you are racing in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and there are
USAT certified referees on the course to ensure fairness in the competition.
There will be NO WARNINGS if you commit a foul during competition. Triathlon is an individual event and you must take personal
responsibility to understand the rules and avoid penalties. At the end of the race all citations by the marshals are reviewed by the Head
Referee who then decides if a penalty should be assessed. The Head Referee’s ruling is final in the case of Position Violations and
there are no protests or appeals of Position penalties. Marshals commonly cite the following violations:
• Position– riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
• Blocking – left side riding and impeding the forward progress of another competitor
• Illegal Pass – passing on the right.
• Overtaken - failing to drop back three bike lengths before re-passing
• Drafting – following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass within 15 seconds.
Though Position Violations carry a time penalty for first offense, two citations will result in an additional penalty and if you are cited
for three violations, you will be disqualified. Be sure to check the penalty sheet before you leave the race site and have a chat with the
Head Referee if you have any questions.
Make sure your helmet is a CPSC approved model. All helmets legally sold in the US are CPSC approved but if you purchased your
helmet in a different country it might be illegal for use in sanctioned events.
While on your bike, always have your chinstrap securely fastened - before, during and after the event! The chin strap rule is easy to
follow, so don’t forget – that’s a DQ!
Wear your race numbers, don’t leave your trash on the course, and don’t carry or use any portable audio devices.
Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers, and officials with courtesy and consideration. Failure to do so is called Unsportsmanlike
Conduct and you will be disqualified.
All that being said, I hope you have a great race, lots of fun, and achieve all your goals.

WORST WETSUIT CONTEST
Are you a little shy about your ratty ripped up wetsuit? Holding your
zipper together with a safety pin? PERFECT!
Rev3 and blueseventy will be having a worst wetsuit competition at
the Rev3 Stage at 12:30pm on Saturday, July 7th.
During the swim we will have a representative checking out all of
the wetsuits and will determine two athletes who we feel have the
worst wetsuits. These two athletes will be rewarded with a brand new
blueseventy Helix wetsuit.
So have no fear and rock the 10 year old wetsuit, it could work out well
for you!
BIKE COURSE SUMMARY
Olympic-Rev: Fast and Flat! It is a one-loop ride with the majority of it taking place
on Marine Drive.
Half-Rev: Technical and Challenging. IMPORTANT: This course is the most
technical bike course we have in our Rev3 race series. You will have steep climbing,
fast descents, and hairpin turns. The Rev3 staff strongly advises all athletes to watch
the course video, pre-ride the course, or drive the course prior to race day. Pay
attention to caution signs along the course. On a happy note, the bike course ends with 10 miles of fast flats!
All participants are expected to follow the “rules of the road” while out on course. With the exception of Marine Drive which is closed
to traffic, the rest of the course will be open. Where there is a designated bike lane, please use it. When going through the urban
areas, keep your head on swivel and watch for unexpected traffic. With the number of climbs out on the course, there will be ample
opportunity to show off your cycling prowess. Do not litter along the course. Police officers are located at all stop lights and will
provide you the right of way. If they ask you to stop, you must comply. The Rev3 staff, county officials, police officers and volunteers
want everyone to be safe out on the course.
BIKE COURSE MARKING
Olympic Bike Course will be marked with Green Signs and Green Arrows on the ground. The arrows on the group will be
made with bright green duct tape and Rev3 signs. If you see those you are on the right path for the Olympic.
Half Bike course will be marked with Pink signs and Pink arrows. Again, the arrows will be marked with bright pink duct tape
on the ground and Rev3 Signs.

WETSUIT RENTAL
Rev3 will have blueseventy wetsuits for rent at all of our venues for 2012. You will be able to choose
from the Reaction Wetsuit and the Helix Wetsuit. You can rent the Reaction wetsuit for only $55 and the
Helix wetsuit for $75. Here is your chance to swim like the pros for less than half the price! Supplies are
limited please reserve in advance. To reserve a wetsuit please e-mail [email protected]
Helix Wetsuit
In 2012 we’ve further enhanced our flagship Helix wetsuit with subtle pattern refinements and
considerable material improvements. This year our Helix suit is designed to further impress with
unparalleled flexibility while strategic materials and panels maximise buoyancy throughout the suit.
BUOYANCY
The Helix tiers buoyancy 5-5-4, centralizing Core buoyancy to raise the position of the hips in relation to
the rest of the swimmer.
CHEST: RATING 5mm
The Helix uses two layered chest panels that naturally and anatomically accentuate the lungs in producing
the optimal amount of buoyancy for the swimmer in the upper body.
TORSO: RATING 5mm + AERODOME
The torso uses a core panel of Yamamoto Aerodome material to deliver a maximal central buoyancy zone
in the suit, keeping the hips high and promoting an efficient downhill swimming position.
LOWER LEGS: RATING 4mm
Research with top swimmers has shown that our 4mm Yamamoto 39 cell neoprene legs deliver the perfect
blend of buoyancy without limiting drive from the kick.
REACTION Wetsuit
100% Yamamoto Neoprene with a SCS (SUPER COMPOSITE SKIN) coating provides a low drag
external surface and impressive buoyancy. Combined with our A- FLEX jersey lining the Reaction
delivers high performance flexibility and buoyancy.
BUOYANCY
The Reaction tiers buoyancy 4-5-4, centralizing Core buoyancy to raise the position of the hips in relation
to the rest of the swimmer.
CHEST: RATING 5mm
Two side panels of 4mm Yamamoto 38cell Neoprene accentuate natural lung buoyancy to optimize your
upper body position relative to the legs.
TORSO: RATING 5mm + AERODOME
5mm Yamamoto Neoprene supports the hips and lower torso, lifting the body in the water reducing drag
and improving speed. The 5mm panels in the back of the hips, are lateral orientated in order to facilitate
raised body position when you roll to the side during breathing.
LOWER LEGS: RATING 4mm
Research with top swimmers has shown that our 4mm Yamamoto neoprene legs deliver the perfect blend
of buoyancy without limiting drive from the kick.
