SEA ventures E Brochure_2 - Ruhr
SEA Ventures is a social enterprise, focusing in solving environmental and
socioeconomic issues of coastal communities in underdeveloped regions of
Indonesia. Coastal communities depend on the ocean for their livelihood
and health. We help them sustaining their livelihoods that are compatible
with healthy ecosystems by developing tools and mechanism to protect
ocean resources and its biodiversity. It requires strengthening global scientific efforts to fully comprehend and protect coastal and marine environmental health, as well as to conserve biological diversity, and mitigate the
impact of ocean threats.
1. Overview
The Marine Research Internship program trains you to become integral members
of our marine research work, able to help us in our marine research and
conservation projects.
The research assistants will gain professional training in scuba diving, species
identification and marine habitat monitoring in order to assist SEA Ventures and
its university partners with their long-term marine research program. In doing so,
you will directly be contributing to the conservation and scientific research of
marine life and ecosystems in the Banda Sea and the future sustainable
development of the local Banda community.
The program is open to anyone, with no previous qualification or experience necessary.
To undertake our marine research, surveys and conservation, all research assistants
must be certified to SSI Advanced open water (or equivalent). If you have never dived
before we will train you from the beginning and certify you to SSI Advanced open water
before your program starts.
Who can join?
This program is a great way for graduates and undergraduates to gain the essential
field-based work experiences needed to help further a career in conservation and
marine sciences. We can also provide the opportunity for students in the field of
marine biology, ecology, environmental sciences and conservation to undertake their
own research projects for their thesis (please ask for further details on possible
research projects).
Internship program of 2 weeks and beyond are available. It will start in September
2015 (depends on the project) with spaces available for 4-6 people per expedition.
2. Research Internship
Projects
A.
Coral Reef
Monitoring and
Restoration
(Eco- Diving)
Coral Reefs cover less than 2% of the ocean floor but support 25% of all marine life. They are
the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth, and also one of the most threatened. All
over the world, reefs are in decline, and the UN estimates that most could be lost as soon as
2050. Protection, conservation, and restoration are all essential to save the reefs we still
have left.
The program (in affiliation with Reef Check organization) is designed to give participants a
hands-on approach to learning about the coral reef environment and a wide range of
research and restoration techniques used by professionals around the world. Reef research
and monitoring is the only way to get a true idea of what the problems are and what needs to
be done to alleviate them. After the problem has been identified we can start to reduce the
damage with various coral restoration activities.
You’ll be certified as Eco-Diver from Reef Check organization (www.reefcheck.org) at the end
of the program.
Why join this program?
You will get to experience scuba diving in one of the most pristine underwater world, learn about marine life (corals, fish,
invertebrates etc.), monitoring the reefs for the purpose of marine management and conservation and experience the
unique Bandanese culture, history and the amazing environment of this mega biodiversity hotspot.

Mapping the
distribution and
activity patterns of
flashlight fish
(Anomalops
katoptron)
around Banda
This is a research project between the
Sekolah Tinggi Perikanan (STP) Hatta-Sjahrir
Banda and the University of Bochum,
Germany.
Anomalops katoptron is a species of flashlight
fish found in warm waters of the central and
western Pacific Ocean where they are found in
shallow waters in the vicinity of reefs and in
deep waters from depths of 200 to 400
meters.
species grows to a length of 35 centimetres.
These fish are nocturnal, emerging at night to
feed on zooplankton and smaller fishes.
In this program you will learn techniques of
assessing coral reefs and other benthic
ecosystems, observation methods for
behaviour studies on flashlight fish, safe
snorkelling and diving at night, underwater
videography. You will learn about the biology
and physiology of flashlight fish and their
light organs and about the fish's function in
coral reef ecosystems.
The flashlight fish gets its name from its two
glowing patches that are caused by Special requirements: feel comfortable in
bio-luminescent bacteria in organs below snorkelling or diving, comfortable in being in
each eye. This fish have a black body with a the water at night
bluish tint on their caudal and dorsal fins. This

Besar, historical places like Belgica fort and houses of then exiled
Indonesia’s first prime minister and first vice president, pristine
beaches of Hatta, Rhun and Ay islands (in your free time, at your own
expense).
The length of your expedition determines the level of scientific training you will receive. All
Research Assistants will be trained to a basic level but those staying for more than 4 weeks
will have the opportunity to progress to the intermediate and expert level. All activities will

4. About Banda
The Banda Sea is surrounded by the sprawling mass of islands that comprises eastern Indonesia. Within this body of water
lie the fabled Spice Islands in the modern day province of Maluku.
The islands have had a long and fascinating history, spices, foreign traders, wars and earthquakes have all featured heavily in its checkered past. The group of islands it is located 200 km from the nearest port town of Ambon, and made up of 11
small volcanic islands. There are some 21,000 inhabitants.
Apart from tourism, fishing and nutmeg are the only 2 industries that Banda has.
These days intrepid visitors come not to trade for spice and fill their ships with but rather to photograph marine life both
large and small and wonder at the richness of the local seas as Banda is now considered one of the finest dive destinations
on the world.
Climate
Dry season in the Banda Sea runs from approximately mid February to early May then
mid August to early December, with monsoon season in the months of January, June
and July. The temperature is quite constant between 27°C and 32°C.
Getting There
You can reach Banda by taking flights to Ambon (daily schedule) from Jakarta (direct
flights) and Bali (transit via Surabaya and Makassar).
From Ambon to Banda, you can take a Pelni ferry , Susi Air and fast boat .
