Publisher’s note
F o r t w e n t y y e a rs, Greystone Books has worked with the David
Suzuki Foundation to create books that help readers understand and
appreciate the world around them. This unique collection of important
works includes books that take a stand on issues related to the environment and sustainability, explain the workings of the natural world,
or capture the magic of some aspect of that world. Together we have
created more than seventy new books, many of them best-sellers and
award winners.
Beginning in September 2015, this relationship will take an exciting new path when Greystone shifts its historical partnership with
the David Suzuki Foundation to the David Suzuki Institute. The David
Suzuki Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 that
works closely with the David Suzuki Foundation to advance awareness
of important environmental issues.
Greystone Books is proud to partner with the David Suzuki Institute, and we are proud to launch this relationship with three new
books in this catalog: Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand
Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry, More Than Honey: The
Survival of Bees and the Future of Our World, and The Wild In You:
Voices from the Forest and the Sea.

The Parrot, the Others, and a Scattershot World
Brian Brett
A raucous biography of a remarkable parrot and an incisive exploration
of how we relate to those who are different from us.

Both a biogr aphy of an irreverent African Grey parrot—given to asking
“Whaddya know?” and announcing “Party time!”—and an exploration of the history of birds/dinosaurs, the relationships between humans and birds, our notions
of language and intelligence, and our tendency to “other” anything that is different from us, Tuco also describes Brett’s own painful experience of being othered
as an androgyne. Provocative, profound, hilarious, and moving, Tuco is most of
all the extraordinary story of Brett’s decades-long relationship with this singular
bird, what Brett calls “a story we made together.”

of Canada Nonfiction Prize, and has written numerous books of poetry and fiction.

Excerpt
Tuco came with a heavy little music box, which the former owner claimed he loved.
The music would “pacify” Tuco if he became wild and obnoxious. The box played
“Feelings,” a song so treacly I could understand why it drove him into silence. I kept it
on the board sitting on filing cabinet, beside his cage (in case I felt the need to torture both of us), until the day Tlell, our lovable husky cross, flopped down too close
to the filing cabinet and soon began snoring. Tuco scuttled out of his cage, deciding
this was going to be more fun than the usual afternoon nap. He tugged at the heavy
little box, wiggling it around, which made me curious, so I stayed at my desk—until
I suddenly realized he’d pulled it over above the dog’s head. He whipped around and
started pushing it. I leapt to my feet and shouted “Watch out!” so loudly that the dog
looked up, startled, just as the box crashed to the floor where her head had been
resting a half-second earlier.
Tuco strode cackling—shoulders twice as wide as a minute earlier—back to his
perch. I removed the busted music box to the garbage can.

Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against
the World’s Most Powerful Industry
Andrew Nikiforuk
From the award-winning author of Tar Sands, winner of the prestigious
Rachel Carson Environment Book Award, and Saboteurs, winner of
Canada’s Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction.
The shocking, inspiring story of an oil and gas industry insider’s determined stand to hold government and industry legally accountable for
the damage fracking leaves in its wake.
When Jessica Ernst’s well water turned into a flammable broth that even her

dogs refused to drink, the biologist and long-time oil patch consultant discovered
that energy giant Encana had secretly fracked hundreds of gas wells around her
home, piercing her community’s drinking water aquifer. Since then, her ongoing
lawsuit against Encana, Alberta Environment, and the Energy Resources Conservation Board has made her a folk hero in many places worldwide where fracking
is underway or is being contemplated. In this powerful work of investigative journalism, Andrew Nikiforuk interweaves Ernst’s story with the science of fracking
and stories of human and environmental repercussions left in its wake. Slick
Water raises dramatic questions about the role of Big Oil in government, society’s
obsession with rapidly depleting supplies of unconventional oil and gas, and the
future of civil society.

That Lonely Section Of Hell
The Botched Investigation of a Serial Killer Who Almost Got Away
Lori Shenher
An ex-police detective’s searing personal account of sexism, racism, and
mishandling in the investigation of missing and murdered women.
In That Lonely Section of Hell , police detective Lori Shenher describes her
role in Vancouver’s infamous Missing and Murdered Women Investigation and her
years-long struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of her work on
the case. From her first assignment in 1998 to explore an increase in the number
of missing women to the harrowing 2002 interrogation of convicted serial killer
Robert Pickton, Shenher tells a story of massive police failure—failure of the police
to use the information about Pickton available to them, failure to understand the
dark world of drug addiction and sex work, and failure to save more women from
their killer. That Lonely Section of Hell passionately pursues the deeper truths
behind the causes of this tragedy and the myriad ways the system failed to protect
vulnerable women.

tigers, following them across azalea-strewn mountains and painfully staking out

In this marriage of memoir and manifesto, Elizabeth May reflects on her extraordinary life and the people and experiences that have formed her and informed
her beliefs. As a result of her disparate formative experiences, May believes that
Canadians must rescue our threatened democracy, return to our traditional role as
a world leader, develop a sustainable economy, and take immediate and decisive
action to address the climate crisis. Who We Are is both a fascinating portrait of a
remarkable woman and an urgent call to action.
Elizabeth May is the leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. She was formerly executive director of the Sierra
Club of Canada. She lives in Sidney, British Columbia.

Paddlenorth tells the riveting story of Jennifer Kingsley’s fifty-four-day
paddling adventure in the northern wilderness as she and her five companions
battle raging winds, impenetrable sea ice, and treacherous rapids. Woven through
this spellbinding narrative are the harrowing accounts of earlier explorers whose
traces along the river warn us against romantic notions of the wild. Paddlenorth
paints an indelible portrait of the spectacular northern landscape and eloquently
explores what wilderness means to us.
Jennifer Kingsley holds a BSC in biology and a MFA in writing and has worked
as a guide and naturalist for more than a decade. Her writing and radio stories
have been featured nationally and internationally. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario.

In Puckstruck , Stephen Smith chronicles his wide-eyed and sometimes
wincing wander through hockey’s literature, language, and history. On this
journey to discover what the game has to say about who we are as Canadians, he seeks to answer some essential riddles. Can hockey make you a better
person? What exactly is the Swedes’ problem? Where did the hook check go?
Should those men really be permitted to keep punching each other in the head?
If hockey is the best of us, is it also the worst? Is there hope?

One Woman’s Final Year After a Lifelong Struggle
with Anorexia and Bulimia
Michelle Stewart (1965–2014)
A dying woman reflects upon her decades-long eating disorder and her
experience as a palliative patient in this poignant memoir.
In March 2013 Michelle Stewart was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure due
to her eating disorder and given only a few months to live. Determined to share
her story while she still had the chance, Michelle began writing a revealing blog
in which she chronicled her lifelong struggle and her experiences as a palliative
patient. “I have had a 32-year dress rehearsal for the fate I now face,” she writes.
This memoir is a collection of the most poignant pieces of writing from that blog,
supplemented with previously unpublished pieces of original poetry from the
author.

Discipline Without Damage
How to Get Your Kids to Behave Without Messing Them Up
Dr. Vanessa Lapointe
A child psychologist equips parents with tools to manage behavioral issues
more effectively while supporting their child’s healthy, natural development.
When your child is threatening a meltdown in the grocery aisle, is it really
possible to keep your cool, correct the behavior, and reinforce healthy development, all at the same time? In this easy-to-read, science-based book, parents,
caregivers, and big people of all kinds will discover how discipline affects children’s development, why intervention should reinforce connection not separation,
and why the disciplinary strategies that may have been used on us as children are
not the ones that children really need.
Dr. Vanessa L apointe is a BC-based registered psychologist who has been
January 2016 Canada / January 2016 U.S.
supporting families and children for fifteen years, both in private practice
and through her previous work with the BC Ministry of Children and Family

Greystone Books is committed to reducing the consumption of old-growth forests in the books it publishes.
This catalogue is one step toward that goal, printed on 100% post-consumer paper.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia
through the Book Publishing Tax Credit and the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund for our publishing activities.
