1982 SUZUKI “NEW JACK” KATANA
Legendary, or so conventional wisdom would have one believe, the
1982 Suzuki Katana was a machine before her time. A Nippon-Saxon gamble that the masses were ready for starship styling to
replace their conventional silhouettes. Thirty years on, she’s the
darling of the ball, but in ’82 few where interested in dancing with
the silver dame.
Specifications
The New Jack is ICON 1000’s reimagination of what could have
been. One possible future.
sharpened front fairing, relocated oil cooler, LED lighting.
Built within the confines our Portland based headquarters, the New
Jack uses a host of pilfered Suzuki kit, custom fabbed components,
and a splash of Honda.
SUSPENSION: Honda 945 forks, Nitron NTR Race Pro rear shocks
BUILDER: All ICON 1000 bikes are built in-house at our Portland headquarters.
ENGINE: 1200cc Suzuki Bandit, custom exhaust, custom velocity stacks, PBI sprocket,
Regina Chain
BODYWORK: Dished stock tank w/rolled seams, custom tail, “Endurance” fuel caps,
CHASSIS: Braced frame, TL1000R swingarm, Honda 929 Triples, Driven Rearsets
WHEELS/TIRES/BRAKES: RC51 SP2, Continental Race Attack Slick, Pro-Lite Brake Rotors,
Pro Performance Pads
The motor is a 1200cc beast, transplanted from the veritable
Suzuki Bandit, upstated with a custom exhaust and velocity stacks.
As is often the case, big motors often expose big structural
problems. Ours was reinforced with profane conjunctions of 1/4”
plate to keep the wobbly’s at bay. Additional footing is supplied by
dual Nitron shocks, and a Honda 954 front-end.
Hans Muth may be building cafe racers, but we’re keeping his ‘80s
dream alive in Portland.
