She’s the product of a worldwide community—she’s Chinese born in the Yang Si province, plucked from an orphanage by my brother. Now she’s traveling across the country to be with auntie Edie, uncle and cousins. She Edie Rice-Sauer Executive Director, Transitions appreciates family perhaps because she had to create one and she insists we communicate as much as possible in this jet set world. She truly values community. Mary Rita Rohde, SNJM Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus & Mary BOARD OF DIRECTORS Linda Williams, Chair Washington Trust Bank Steven Jarvis, Vice Chair BDO USA LLP Kari Grytdal, Secretary Spokane County Penny Brown, Treasurer AmericanWest Bank Gerald Almanza Movher Inc. Deborah Brooks 2nd Look Books Kim Chaffin Community Volunteer Liz Cole, SP I also write this on the day after the sniper shootings in Dallas reaction to two black men killed by police and the killings that preceded these events. Today our community feels split apart, bleeding with angst. St. Joseph Family Center Phyllis Gabel Community Volunteer Emilia Keener Providence Health Group Sr Pat Millen, OSF St. Joseph Family Center Sr Joy Milos, CSJ Gonzaga University Community requires communication, respect, compromise and honesty. Conflict occurs and threatens us. How can we create peace from hate and distrust? Just as we are all called to create this peace in our world, Transitions seeks to help women create this peace for themselves. Healthy communities are the foundation. We have begun Restorative Justice Programs. Program participants and staff come together to heal when someone has broken the agreements of their community. They work to find a way to repair their community and find solace. Each woman comes to us often alone and isolated, seeking to find a sense of belonging. When you invest in Transitions you invest in the community each woman finds through our housing, employment, and basic need services. Thank you for seeing the value of community and wholeness. Now, pray for unifying, respectful peace. We remember and honor these roots as we look to the future. For Transitions, the future is home. When the Spokane Dominicans merged with the Sinsinawa Dominicans, they purchased the four-acre campus that now houses the Transitional Living Center and EduCare programs. 2.07 acres of this property remained available for development. Wanting to continue and honor the legacy of those Sisters, we began to research and discuss the best way to end poverty and homelessness for women and children using that park-like piece of land. An aerial view of Transitional Living Cottage Housing beginning construction in Spring 2017. Our discussion resulted in a plan to design and build twenty-four cottages, individual homes that will range in size from studio to three-bedroom. As we look towards the future, we know having a permanent supportive housing option for our participants will position us for both mission and financial stability. To us this long-term vision is important. However, equally important is that our participants’ desire to stay once they have joined the Transitions family. An arbitrary timeline cuts short support and healing. The future of these women and families is more secure when they have a home, a forever home. In Spokane County, for every one hundred very low-income families, or individuals looking for housing, there are only eleven units available. Transitions will make an impact on these statistics, honoring the legacy of our sponsoring communities, and providing even more robust services to our participants. 2.07 acres of land, the future is home. "THE FUTURE OF THESE WOMEN AND FAMILIES IS MORE SECURE WHEN THEY HAVE A HOME, A FOREVER HOME." 5 Home is the place where it all comes together. Home is like the sun that a family’s universe spins around. A constant orbit around home, each member of the family a planet on his or her own path, the gravity of home holding it together. Without home the planets go off course. Without a central point of support and the gravity to guide them, planets begin to grow distant, no longer performing the routes needed to keep them working in harmony to create a beautiful universe. Beyond the need for support and guidance, home also provides a place to feel safe and relieve stress. SAFETY HOUSING VOUCHERS PROVIDE A PLACE TO CALL HOME Imagine the constant nagging worry of wondering where you will sleep each night, whether someone will expect payment for letting you stay, whether or not your children will be safe there. Not to mention the exposure to allergens and environmental toxins that comes with life on the streets. A housing voucher gives long-term stability to housing. When women and families are exiting Transitions, their goal is to move into safe, affordable, permanent housing. A housing voucher provided by Spokane Housing Authority provides guaranteed rental subsidy based on the size of the family and the family’s income. “A voucher is a way to make sure that no matter what happens with our income level we will be secure in housing. I have three kids in my custody and I will move out of the Transitional Living Center into a duplex, we have three bedrooms, a dishwasher, there is a pool, air conditioning and a playground! It’s in the Mead School District, which will be great for my kids” shares Becky Bussing. The Spokane Housing Authority (SHA) has radically changed the way housing vouchers are managed in Spokane. We all know the struggle of finding new resources. SHA decided to better utilize an existing resource, allowing non-profit agencies to manage a small number of vouchers. Non-profits, like Transitions, are given a few vouchers each month and can use these to assist participants who would otherwise have waited years for a lottery. Home is the glue that holds a brighter future together, that keeps the planets in orbit. “Now that I know we will have a place to live I can focus on other goals and move forward. I can’t wait to go back to school, get a job and be a good mom.” Becky Bussing, TLC Alumni 6 SUPPORT COMMUNITY COURT: A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE IS NOW IN SESSION Toe tapping, nausea, nail-biting, sweating, clothing adjustments, and deep-breathing – the hallway of the County Courthouse. The tension is real and even those happy with the outcome of their court cases have unease in this setting. A judge up on their throne looking down on the inhabitants of their courtroom would give anyone disease. Now, add the challenge of living with the chaos of homelessness, complications from your mental health issues or the struggles of chemical dependency. Every Monday, at the downtown library a different kind of courtroom experience unfolds. There is still screening and security but people chat waiting in-line talking about the movies they’ve recently seen, a new bike path they discovered or the best chicken they’ve ever eaten. As they walk in they are greeted by a room full of providers, including Transitions. Mary Logan, Spokane Muncipal Court Judge Patty Norton, a 13 year Transitions’ and Community Court Volunteer employee, describes these as “the services needed to live healthy lives.” Patty’s outreach at Community Court is part of the Women’s Hearth’s efforts to reach women who need resources but don’t know what services are available. “Getting people into housing is the most important thing I do. But, I also help women navigate systems in Spokane including the court system.” “This program is making a difference, women know they can come here every Monday and access the court, the services, the public defenders, and the prosecutor. Beyond that, the Community Court really celebrates the successes here. They announce when someone graduates and the whole court stands up to applaud and congratulate them. The judge sits on the same level as the participants, not up on a platform.” This same personalized, tailored and flexible approach is just what Patty says makes Transitions a success. “Transitions is flexible and really works to listen to and meet our participants where they are. I have never worked anywhere else for more than four or five years, but Transitions is different. We are always inclusive. We practice inclusive leadership as a staff and bring participants into every decision possible. I stay here because I know these services improve lives and save lives.” “The Women’s Hearth receives a lot of ‘things’ from the community that allow us to meet women’s basic needs. But the most basic need these women have is for the Women’s Hearth to stay open and we need monetary investments to do that. We are doing outreach, providing basic need services, classes and help navigating systems. It’s working, please help us keep doing it.” "TRANSITIONS IS FLEXIBLE AND REALLY WORKS TO LISTEN TO AND MEET PARTICIPANTS WHERE THEY ARE." 7 There is light behind Megan Curran’s dark eyes that reveals layers of depth and empathy. She is soft-spoken and chooses her words with care and thought. When she speaks, others listen. Her experiences of loss and struggle do not dampen her resolve. Most recently, she lost two friends to addiction, yet she remains focused on her own path to recovery and growth. She has worked to build supports, working on herself to become healthy and whole. She has gratitude to all of the people who have Megan Curran, Miryam’s House Alumni helped her get healthy and whole and has hopes to one day be able to pay them back. Her advice to future Miryam’s House residents comes reluctantly and humbly, “take advantage of the services and supports that are offered freely. Take your time to rest, but there is a lot of work to be done. Make the most of the time that you are here. Your full time job when you get here is yourself and it is the hardest job that I have ever had.” On March 10th, the doors of Miryam’s House opened to welcome Megan Curran. She had spent the first months of 2014 in hospitals and a nursing home recovering from addiction and, two heart surgeries. She had struggled with addiction, PTSD and homelessness for 8 years. She wanted desperately to stop hurting the people she loved, but feared this too would be another failed attempt at change, at sobriety and at life. Yet, Megan believes in second chances and that she has been given one. She has come a long way from the streets and addiction to become a leader, a friend, a sister, a mentor at Miryam’s House. She has learned to trust and believe in herself. She beams, “To be where I am now, where I am rock-climbing. I don’t really have limitations. I would never have believed it. How can all that happen in a year?” SKILLS FOR SUCCESS FINDING HOPE AT MIRYAM’S HOUSE Megan graduated from Miryam’s House on December 9th, 2014. It had been a long journey to the steps of the big house with the red door, which had begun many states away, through years of trauma and addiction. She was welcomed to her to her new home by the women of Miryam’s and felt the warm force of love and healing. She has sat down to over a hundred community meals and yet she still remembers her first dinner. “I will never forget that first dinner. This overwhelming sense of belonging, safety and love the things that a family provides.” She speaks of Miryam’s and her journey with fondness and reverence. One of the lessons she learned at Miryam’s was not to run. “This was a true place of transformation where things began to change for me.” It was more than a year ago that Megan moved into her new apartment and the next chapter of her journey. Her dreams to live a life with purpose and to pay it forward are coming true. She has served on the Program Committee of Transitions, go through Leadership Spokane, graduating in June. She works at a recovery center, helping others make it through addiction to the other side. She continues to pay it forward. In the 9 months she called Miryam’s House her home, she became a leader, resident assistant, a big sister, and an inspiration. Asked about Megan’s journey, Sue Barclay, Miryam’s House’s resident counselor, remarks “When I think about what the sister’s spoke about, it is in the everyday things that we see miracles. Megan is the miracle of Miryam’s.” 8 BE A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE BE OUR GUEST START SOMETHING A way to get involved is to host your own fundraiser for Transtions.
