need and provide service with a smile. Come out and see what they have

Featured on the cover this month is a sample of the beautiful jewelry you
will find at Vickymarie’s. With Mother’s Day coming fast on May13th,
be sure to stop in and pick out a bracelet or one of the other unique gifts
you will find in Vickymarie’s store. She can make you a personalized,
one of a kind piece of jewelry for the lady in your life. Heidelberg
Family Restaurant and Ozgood’s Grill and Bar are hosting special
Mother’s Day feasts, so pick up your mom and take her out for a good
meal. There are several community things happening this month in which
you can participate. Support the Library by buying books, botanicals and
baked goods. Healthy Paws and the Locker Room are having another
Blood Drive this month so make an appointment and lend your arm for a
donation. Finally, the pool will be opening at the end of the month so if
you haven’t joined, put that on the top of your list. You can’t beat the
pool family membership for value, fun and to beat the soon to come
summer heat. I hope you will join us at the Heidelberg Family
Restaurant on Memorial Day at 4pm when the Conrad Weiser Senior who
worked hard and WON the Learn and Earn Contest will be given her
car. And, to all you Prom goers, please do not drink and drive. Have a
safe and sober prom night so we wake up and have all of you still here on
Sunday. The consequences of drinking and driving or hosting a party
with alcohol are expensive and can be deadly. Protect yourself and your
friends by looking out for each other and Be Smart Stay Alive!!!
BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
Richard’s Music Studio owner Richard DiGirolamo.
I started
teaching a single student from my home in Reinholds, PA in 1994. At the time I
had been studying music for four years and my guitar instructor suggested this
would be a great way for me to learn more about what I didn’t know. I wasn't
quite sure of what he meant by that, but I was eager to try. I convinced a coworker that he needed to play the guitar and that I would be just the teacher for
him. After a little arm twisting, he agreed. After his first lesson I was hooked. I
enjoyed seeing the look of accomplishment on his face when he did well at his
lesson. In 1995 I took a part-time teaching position at a local studio where I
could get even more experience. My passion for teaching guitar and bass guitar
had grown and I knew this was what I wanted to do. After working there six
years the owner informed us (the teachers) that she was retiring and selling the
business. It was at this point I decided to open Richard’s Music Studio and
teach full-time. My wife and I decided that moving to a better location was the
first step. We found a great home in Womelsdorf. It is the oldest house in
Womelsdorf, built in 1732. The house belonged to Helen Kalbach who, I am
told, was the last remaining Womelsdorf family descendent. I was attracted to
the summer kitchen and decided it would be my one room schoolhouse. (My
wallet had other ideas.) After spending most of our money fixing up the main
living quarters, the studio would have to wait. But not me. On June 1st, 2001 the
doors opened. I was teaching from my living room until other arrangements
could be made. The building we used for storage has now been converted into
the studio and all of the teaching is done there. I still have my sights on the
summer kitchen though. The business has expanded to about sixty students and
in 2004 I started teaching the guitar program at the Blue Mountain Academy in
Hamburg. I grew up in Shillington and graduated from Governor Mifflin. My
wife, Debbie, a fellow Berks County native, grew up in Robesonia and graduated
from Conrad Weiser. We have two children, Marisa, a CW 8th grader and
Dominic, a CW 5th grader. Along with guitar lessons I also perform minor
repairs, adjustments and restringing of guitars and bass guitars. I now have 10+
years teaching experience. As a student you will learn: How to properly handle
and play your instrument. How to care for your instrument. How to read musical
notation and perform songs. How to interpret chords, notation and tablature.
Youwill learn about musical theory and how to perform with others. Advanced
students will learn more in depth notation and theory including but not limited to
improvisation, reharmonizing, chord melody and musical composition. I hold
day and evening classes and include books with lessons. I have SIT strings and
accessories and offer senior citizens discounts. Please contact Richard at
610-589-4041 or visit my website @ www.richardsmusicstudio.com.
HISTORY
402 West Penn Avenue & May Street was once the home of Stamm’s
Store. Built in 1912 by Francis Stamm this small store had groceries,
tobacco, penny candy, (yes there was once such a thing), and ice cream.
There were a couple of tables and chairs for those who wanted to eat
their ice cream in the store. Those chairs were also used by area men
who gathered for card games and chit chat. Bud Bricker recalls buying
soup at the store as a little boy when he lived a couple doors away. Mr.
Stamm died in 1937 and the store remained open but was run by his
daughter and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Oxenrider for about one year
before they converted it into a small home. Today the building still
stands and hasn’t changed much except for aging.
SENIOR CITIZENS
A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won’t stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won’t shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I’m happy when I’m not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
go to my blood so I won’t fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I’d really like to know….
Is what tells each one where to go!
SPRING CLEAN-UP
May 4 & 5 are the days to take all of the items that cannot be put out for
the trash to the borough garage located at 210 South Elm Street. We all
want Robesonia to be a well kept town. All of you who have put off
cleaning up and throwing out those unnecessary items, now is your
opportunity to GET RID OF THAT JUNK. There are ordinances to
protect those that adjoin problem properties and the borough will be
enforcing them in an effort to get things cleaned up. So before your
neighbor reports you or the Mayor comes knocking on your door, start
the process today and be ready to unload your throwaways by May 5th.
A list of charges can be found in the Borough newsletter and proof of
residency (ID) must be provided when you unload at the garage. No tires
or toxic waste will be accepted and the Borough has the right to reject
excessive amounts of disposable material.
Randy Gartner for Berks County Commissioner
On May 15th, will you vote for a candidate based on what they
say, or will you vote for a candidate based on what they have
done?
I am a Navy Veteran, small business owner, an active member of
The Robesonia VFW, The Friends of the Robesonia Furnace, The
Robesonia Community Association and St Daniels Lutheran
Church. In 2007 I formed a group to fight for the elimination of the
school property tax and served as co-campaign manager for our
new State Senator, Mike Folmer. As a former school board and
Borough Council President I have a long record of holding the line
on property taxes.
As a County Commissioner I will fight against foolish spending
like for a County Police Force. I will fight to eliminate the violent
crime that is plaguing Reading and costing us millions of dollars a
year paying for the court system, the prison, the District Attorney
and Parole Offices.
I will never vote to raise my own pay or retirement.
For more information about my background or what I will do as
County Commissioner, please visit my website at:
www.gartnerforberks.com or call 693-6244.
In the May 15th republican primary, vote for a candidate who
has a long record of serving our country and our community.

THE NEWSLETTER
NOT SO SWEET GREETING CARDS
My darling. My lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you screwed up my life.
I see your face when I am dreaming.
That’s why I always wake up screaming.
Kind, intelligent, loving and hot;
This describes everything you are not.
My love you take my breath away.
What have you stepped in to smell this way?
Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss.
I only went out with you because I was pissed.
Dear IRS:
Enclosed is my 2007 tax return showing that I owe $3,407.00 in taxes.
Please note the attached article from USA Today, wherein you will see
that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid
$600.00 for a toilet seat.
I am enclosing four toilet seats (value $2,400) and six
hammers (value $1,029), bringing my total remitted to
$3,429.00. Please apply the overpayment of $22.00 to
the "Presidential Election Fund," as noted on my return.
You can do this inexpensively by sending them one 1.5"
Phillips Head screw (article from USA Today detailing how
HUD pays $22.00 each for 1.5" Phillips Head Screws is
enclosed for your convenience.) It has been a pleasure to pay
my tax bill this year and I look forward to paying it again next year.
Sincerely,
A Satisfied Taxpayer

HAVE YOUR SAY !
Thank you for all the feedback on our local businesses. I
am proud to say there were more compliments than
complaints. If you have something to say about a local
business call me at 610 693 9722 or send it to 12 Patterson
Drive-Robesonia, PA 19551. I want to hear about where you
like to eat and where you don’t like to eat. I am interested in
what businesses are providing both good and bad services. If
an employee was rude to you or extra helpful, I want to know.
I will pass your comments onto the business, good or bad, so
they can provide better service or so that they know they are
doing a good job. If you choose not to use your name that’s
OK. So, Robesonia, here’s your chance to “Have your say,”
and help the community function even better. This is one of the
comments received:
“I stopped to eat at that little place on Penn Ave, Digger’s, and I
thought it was so neat. The food was good and the people are so
nice.”

YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS
Everyone that attended the program at the Conrad Weiser High School
with Ben & Cindy Walters and Linda & Elliott Sheftel on April 16th,
had to be moved beyond comfort at the heartbreaking story they shared
with us in an attempt to save our children and families from the tragedy
they live with everyday. Ben, a 2005 graduate of Wilson, spoke
candidly about the events of that day during Senior week at the shore.
I could feel his sincerity and remorse as he relived drinking alcohol
most of the day and the sequence of events that led up to him getting
into his car, hitting, and taking the life of Justin Sheftel. When Justin’s
mom, Linda, stood before us my tears started to flow. I have never
been able to grasp how a parent goes on after losing a child. Here
before us this obviously still grieving mom, begins to tell us about her
day, that day, that has made it impossible for her and her family to
ever be the same again. She speaks of the joy of Justin graduating and
what she remembers of that day up until that unwanted, this can’t be
happening, phone call when she learned she had lost her son. As we
all watched slides of Justin growing up, with his family and friends,
and then in his cap and gown so happy, not knowing how little time
this family had left to be together. That last kiss, that last goodbye.
Then Cindy, Ben’s mom, greeted us and took us through her day and
how this tragedy has affected her. She explained how and why she
does not look or live life in the same way. No one involved in this
would EVER be the same. We watched slides of Ben growing up, with
his family and friends and then in his cap and gown. What a proud
moment for a parent and a child. She explained her agony of having
been told of the accident and being kept from Ben because he was 18
years old. She had to make an appointment to visit Ben in jail and
could only see him a few times on the weekends through glass. No
hugs, no kisses. She asked that teenagers avoid senior week, it is not a
place you should be, and instead volunteer doing something good in the
name of Justin Sheftel. They all made us feel how the tragedy
affected all of their lives so differently but so intensely and forever. I
made a point to speak with all of them that night. What truly warm
people they all are and what they are doing could and should save
100’s of lives. If you missed hearing them speak at Weiser, please find
time and take your family to hear what they have to say. No one ever
wants to think that their world could be touched by such deep pain, and
these families could never have seen it coming after
graduation in 2005. But it can and it does happen to nice people. I
guarantee, you will be moved and so will your teens.
