Government of Yukon Premier’s Welcome Message Welcome letter for the Northern Air Transport Association’s annual conference. On behalf of the Government of Yukon I am pleased to welcome you to Yukon and to the Northern Air Transport Association’s 36th annual general meeting, conference and trade show. The aviation industry is a critical component of modern life in Yukon and provides a service that is vital in connecting our communities and providing access to southern markets. As you know, airlines and related service providers face unique challenges in the North, from extreme weather conditions to limited resources in remote areas. Despite the challenges, your industry consistently delivers reliable and professional service. Northerners have come to depend on this quality service and appreciate your efforts in helping to build our strong communities. Your industry is invested in the territory and you demonstrate your commitment to Yukoners, not only through aviation services, but also through your support for a variety of local businesses and organizations. On behalf of all northerners, I thank you for your dedication in helping to connect our communities. I wish all participants a successful meeting and I look forward to your continued innovation and interest in the transportation field in the North. Sincerely, Darrell Pasloski Premier of Yukon City of Whitehorse Mayor’s Welcome Message Welcome Delegates to the 36th Northern Air Transport Association’s Annual General Meeting, Conference and Trade show On behalf of Council and the residents of Whitehorse it is my pleasure to once again welcome all of you to your annual general meeting taking place here in Whitehorse. Air access to Whitehorse as well as other northern communities is vital to our social and economic well-being. Without a doubt air transportation continues to be a major factor in the economic development of the north and rest assured we value the efforts of NATA assisting with the challenges of providing safe, efficient and effective air services. I wish you all the best, hope you have a successful AGM and that you will have an opportunity to sample some of our world famous northern hospitality during your stay. Mayor Bev Buckway Whitehorse City Council (From top left): Councillor Dave Austin, Mayor Bev Buckway, Councillor Betty Irwin, Councillor Ranj Pillai, Councillor Kirk Cameron, Councillor Florence Roberts, and Councillor Dave Stockdale Northern Air Transport Association President’s Welcome Message Welcome to the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Northern Air Transport Association April 2012 Whitehorse, Yukon The need for enhanced weather reporting systems in the North, lack of fuel storage capacity at northern airports, the predominance of gravel runways in the North, delayed development of GPS approaches at northern airports, poor northern airport security, David and Goliath competition at northern hub airports and the unsuitability of RESA regulations for northern airports…sound familiar? These issues and many more have plagued northern operators for many years. And they continue to do so despite a concerted collective effort to make changes. Thus, the list of challenges worthy of discussion at this, our 36th Annual General Meeting, is long and, unfortunately, predictable. Having said that, we are pleased to welcome once again, our colleagues from government. Without their ongoing participation we are unlikely to gain any traction in the fight to alleviate some of the stresses which are an integral part of life as a northern carrier. Despite setbacks and lack of progress on many issues, I remain encouraged that we will be able to tackle and topple some of these hurdles if we keep pulling in the right and same direction. While I am certain that we will enjoy a fulsome discussion on the matter of northern aviation challenges, if we accomplish nothing else at this AGM I hope that we can, at a minimum, convey the message that air transportation in Canada is an important economic driver and in the North it is imperative and absolutely necessary element of the economic wellbeing of its residents, businesses and government. If we are successful in this task all else should flow more easily to support such an important facet of northern life. On behalf of the NATA Board of Directors I want to thank you all for your participation in this year’s AGM. Your attendance here is critical to our mission. Tracy Medve, President Northern Air Transport Association Executive Director’s Welcome Message For those of you who have been coming to NATA for years you will be know that there is not normally a message from the Executive Director in the program. Then again, it is somewhat unusual for the Executive Director not to be at the AGM! Unfortunately, I am still recovering from heart surgery and the trip to Whitehorse was just not in the cards. On a personal note, my heart felt appreciation for all the well wishes and support I have received during this difficult time. What I would like to convey to everyone though is just how active your association has been in the last year in looking after your interests. Under the direction of a knowledgeable and active Board of Directors these are just some of the activities we have been involved in: CARAC Fatigue Management Working Group CARAC Performance Based Navigation Working Group CARAC Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Working Group The Aviation Security Regulatory Review (ASRR) Security Screening Technical Committee Widespread Fatigue Damage Risk Assessment Canadian Aviation Executive Safety Network (Note: NATA is now on the CAESN steering committee ) GNWT Airports Meetings Nunavut Airports Meetings Float Plane Safety Focus Group CARAC Technical Committee Health Canada Consultations CCAA National Occupational Standard for Canadian Commercial Pilots Nav Canada ATOCC / ANSNAC meetings DND CASARA North consultations Appearing before the Senate Transportation Committee CARAC Modernization Consultations GNWT / NU Proposed Occupational Health and Safety Regulations GNWT Proposed New Wildlife Act CARAC CRM Focus Group CVR Risk Assessment Presentation to the Northern Caucus Advisory Group on Aviation Security I would also like to take this time to thank all of you who volunteered your time either on the Board, doing research, or representing NATA at various meetings. It it this type of involvement that provides the expertise and professionalism that we are respected for, while keeping our costs low. As a result our membership continues to grow. I hope to see you next year in Yellowknife at the AGM, if not before. Regards, Stephen Nourse OPERATOR MEMBERS Adlair Aviation (1983) Ltd. Innu Mikun Airlines Air Inuit Ltd.
