Waterford minor hurlers win 2013 WLRfm/
Granville Hotel overall GAA award
THE Waterford minor hurlers were named as the
overall winners for 2013, in the WLR FM Granville
Hotel GAA awards scheme at a gala banquet last
Saturday night in the Granville Hotel. The victorious
minor side who claimed the All Ireland title back in
September, were one of 10 monthly awards winners
in contention for the overall honour.
Former Kilkenny hurler Eddie Brennan made the
announcement to a packed function room who were
loud in their applause for the minor panel. The eight
times All Ireland medal winner with the Cats was rich
in praise for the team's achievements last season:
"They were well worth their win on the day against
Galway, it was a real team effort with everyone pulling
together for each other. You'd have to say they were
worthy winners back in September.
This generation of Waterford minors grew up being
inspired by the senior team of the past 15 years. I
know myself when I was growing up I wanted to play
for the county team and to be like them so there's no
doubt that this bunch of lads would have been
inspired by the Waterford team of the last decade" he
added.
The "Sunday Game" panellist believes the Deise
can build on last year's win: "Success doesn't come
easy and winning is a brillaint habit and to have that
belief of winning in Croke Park is very important.
Those few minutes after the full time whistle makes
everything worthwhile. I think Waterford are in a very
healthy position going forward with so much young
talent coming through the system".
Waterford minor captain Kevin Daly accepted the
award on behalf of the team and said everyone was
thrilled with the reaction to their win over Galway in
Croke Park back on September 8th. "Hopefully now
we can all push on and try and achieve more with the
county at U-21 and senior level. It's been a wonderful
few months for us but it's a new year and I think we're
all looking forward to getting back to the serious stuff
of playing over the next few weeks," he said.
The minor team received a sunshine holiday along
with a specially engraved Waterford Crystal Trophy.
Jackie Cusack from the Granville Hotel made the
overall presentation to the winners along with further
presentations to the other monthly awards winners Patrick Curran, Michael Walsh, Tom Devine, Jake
Dillon, Maurice Shanahan, Stephen Bennett, Patrick
Hurney, Owen Connors and Barry Murphy.

WATERFORD CRYSTAL TOURNAMENT …
University of Limerick deserving
winners in Carriganore
University of Limerick...1-11;
Waterford……………...... 0-10
THE words of the late Ned
Power (Tallow) that ‘no hurling should be played in winter’ never seemed more true
than in Carriganore last
Sunday as players, officials
and spectators alike braved
the harsh weather conditions
throughout this 70 minute
preliminary Waterford Crystal
Tournament game. The bottom line at the end of the day
was that the home team
didn’t make full use of the
gale force winds in a lack lustre performance and a total of
17 wides committed then to
defeat when referee Cathal
McAllister blew the final
whistle.
Despite playing against
the conditions in the first half,
UL performed very well and
were just 0-1 behind after 27
minutes (0-4 to 0-3) and two
in arrears at half time (0-6 to
0-4). Once
Galway’s
Jonathon Glynn got to the
end of a Brian Stapleton’s
delivery in the 39th minute to
score the only goal and Tipp’s
Tommy Heffernan pointed
immediately after, the writing
was on the wall for the hosts
and the winners were never
headed there after.
Limerick’s Tom O’Brien
opened the scoring from a
placed ball in the 2nd minute
but unfortunately he had to
retire injured nine minutes
later after a clash with
Waterford’s wing back Philip
Mahony. The home team had
a goal chance in the 5th
minute
when
Ryan
Donnolly’s flick in front of goal
was kept out by Shane
Hassett.
Kevin
Moran
opened Waterford’s account
in the 8th minute with a good

score from play but, in
general, the visitors were
hurling with more purpose
and with an extra man back
in defence they were coping
well with their opposing forwards.
Tommy Heffernan (f) and
Jamie Nagle traded mid-half
points before the dangerous
Jonathon Glynn had a UL
goal chance at the city end.
The Deise team went back
into the lead in the 19th
minute when Ryan Donnolly
won a free which Maurice
Shanahan converted and the
lead was stretched to 0-2
when Jamie Nagle fought
hard to set-up fellow midfielder Shane O’Sullivan for a
fine score. Both teams never
looked like scoring a goal and
0-2 each were traded for the
remainder of the half with
Tommy Heffernan rifling over
two frees against the gale
and Shane O’Sullivan and
Maurice Shanahan pointing
for what proved to be an inadequate 0-6 to 0-4 interval
lead. UL hadn’t scored from
play in the first half but they
were in a very good position
WESTERN BOARD MEETING …
Minor and under 21 football
championships start next month
AT the Affiliations meeting of
the Western Board in
Lawlors Hotel last Thursday
evening it was announced
that the Minor Football championship will commence on
the first week in February and
its Under 21 equivalent will
commence on February 14th.
Delegates
were
also
informed that it will be
announced by the County
Board that the Senior
Football Championship will
begin on the 13th April and
the Senior Hurling will start on
April 26th.
The Kilgobinet club successfully applied
to be
regraded to Junior Hurling
(Intermediate Attached) while
the Kilrossanty club didn’t
affiliate in the Minor football
championship which was
arguably the biggest surprise
of the list of changes to the
2013 set up. Cois Bhride, the
Tallow/ Shamrocks combination, have signed up for the
Under 21 championships and
Colligan have affiliated two
hurling teams.
As both Brickey’s and An
Rinn were relegated from
Senior Ranks last year, their
second string football and
hurling sides respectively will
participate in the Junior
(Intermediate
Attached)
championships. Likewise,
Fourmilewater’s second team
will play Junior Hurling
(Intermediate Attached) after
their relegation from the
Intermediate grade. The
Ballymac men won this
Junior County title in 2012.
The
Western
Board
Championship Structure will
take place on Thursday,
January 23rd at 7.30 p.m. As
there are ten teams in the
Intermediate Hurling and just
four in the Junior champi-
onship, the Board will be
recommending to this meeting that two teams will be relegated from the Intermediate
grade this year which should
lead to some interesting
debate. Fair dues to the officers of the Western Board,
who have already met with
the four Junior teams regarding options for the running of
this year’s championship and
all will be revealed shortly.
Before the end of the
meeting,
the
Board
announced that eleven clubs
have new secretaries this
year while any club requiring
extra championship medals
can contact Treasurer John
Jackson.
Following a motion passed
at County Convention, clubs
have until Friday, March 7th
at 5 p.m. to submit their
regradings to the Western
Board.
facing into the second.
Stephen Molomphy and
Ian O’Regan were introduced
for the restart but it was UL,
as expected that dictated the
play and Waterford didn’t
score until the 19th minute of
the second half as they were
now paying the cost for their
nine first half wides. Jonathon
Glynn’s goal and Tommy
Heffernan’s fourth point shot
UL into the lead for a sufficient third time. The hosts
had a second goal chance in
the 40th minute after some
great play by Kevin Moran
and Stephen Molomphy but
the latter’s enforced kicked
effort was saved at the
expense of a ‘65’.
Pauric
Mahony
and
Stephen Roche were introduced in the 43rd and 46th
minutes as the visitors’ lead
was stretched to a clear goal
(1-6 to 0-6) by Padraic Walsh
from Tullaroan who was one
of the best players on view
throughout. UL were five
points clear by the 54th
minute thanks to
Brian
Stapleton and yet another
pointed free from Tommy
Heffernan.
Maurice Shanahan was
the first Waterford forward to
score from play in the 54th
minute but UL’s subs were
proving their worth with
scores by Mikey Ryan and a
gem by Mikey O’Neill near
the sideline on the far side.
Waterford’s third goal chance
resulted from impressive
team play by Jake Dillon,
Stephen Roche and Kevin
Moran but the latter’s well
struck effort went wide of the
post. The winners enjoyed
their greatest lead in the 63rd
minute, 0-7, when Brian
Stapleton scored a point from
his left side near the stand,
similar to Mikey O’Neill’s
effort.
Staring
at
defeat,
Waterford upped their tempo
and the result was three
pointed frees by Maurice
Shanahan after a fourth goal
effort, this time by Jake Dillon,
also went unclaimed. UL won
the second half by 1-7 to 0-4
and this was definitely the
case of the best team winning
the game. The winners now
play WIT at the same venue
this Sunday after beating
Waterford for the second year
in succession, the first by
1-20 to 0-18. Last Sunday
they were missing such notables as Podge Collins,
Séadna Morey, Jason Forde
and Conor Ryan and with all
these players on board they
should well test UCC’s three
in a row Fitzgibbon title ambitions next month.
Number of Scorers: UL
7; Waterford 4.
Scores from Play: UL
1-5; Waterford 0-5.
UL’s Top Three: Padraig
Walsh, Brian Stapleton and
Jonathon Glynn
Waterford’s Top Three:

Waterford County Board
clarifies minor hurling

IN relation to stories circulating on social media regarding
the All-Ireland Minor Hurling
winners medals, Waterford
County Board wish to issue
the following statement:
Waterford County Board
received 24 official All-Ireland
Final winners’ medals for our
minor hurlers from Croke
Park as is the norm for minor
All-Ireland winning teams.
Waterford County Board
ordered additional medals to
ensure that all members of
the Minor panel received winner’s medals.
Unfortunately five of the
additional medals were incorrectly stamped/engraved and
will have to be replaced. As
soon as Waterford County
Board became aware of the
issue, we contacted the supplier with a view to correcting
the problem.

caused to any panel member
who received an incorrectly
stamped medal and we can
assure them that they will
receive the correct medal as
soon as we have them.
Waterford County Board

that All Ireland winners’

From the Files of the Dungarvan Observer – 50 years ago. Saturday, 1st February, 1964. By John A. Murphy
1964 County Board Convention …
Motions generate lively debate
OF the 33 motions listed, 14 were passed,
8 defeated, 4 were ruled out of order, 5
withdrawn and two referred to the incoming
County Board. The controversial motions
were undoubtedly the ones tabled by the
Ballyduff Lower Club and included their
successful one in requesting that Rule 27
(Foreign Games Rule) be open for discussion every year instead of evey third year
as at present. This motion goes before
Congress at Easter but from the trend in
former years is unlikely to be carried.
In his excellent address to the
Convention, the Chairman Mr. Jamie
Moloney, said:
The reports of the Divisional Boards
show an upwards trend in the number of
clubs affiliated to the Association in the
county. This is ample proof of the popularity
enjoyed by our national pastime and of the
ever-increasing number of young men and
boys participating in our games every year.
I sometimes wonder, however, if we are
using this to the best advantage. Since its
foundation the GAA has played an outstanding part in the life and history of the
nation and with its ever increasing popularity now more than ever can we help in the
national development. Last year, I mentioned the need for men of character and
integrity in charge of clubs. Today, I repeat
this. The Club is the cradle of the
Association and it is from his cradle days
that the mind and character of the individual member must be moulded so that
he may develop into a true Gael and a true
sportsman.
While there are many influences outside
our organisation which tend to counteract
our efforts and belittle our ideals, there is
sometimes the greater danger from the
enemy who lurks within our fold. We all
understand that it is human nature to rebel
against being governed but while rules and
bye-laws remain we must submit ourselves
to them. Those rules are drawn up at
Convention time and at Congress by the
individual members themselves. They are
the members’ rules and when we rebel
against them we are in fact rebelling
against ourselves. I therefore appeal to
each member to be loyal to the aims and
high ideals of the Association and to be
obedient to its rules whether on matters of
administration or conduct on the field of
play.
While we may dwell with pleasure on
the past, we must look to the future. In the
Eastern Division Senior hurling is maintaining its high standard but the outlook for
1964 I regret, is not as bright in the
Western half of the county. If current
rumours concerning the regrading of existing clubs are true then the future is gloomy
and I urge the incoming Board to go into
the matter immediately with the object of
seeking the cause of this decline and making an effort to rectify the matter before our
senior hurling competition sinks to a competition confined to one division. It is sad to
see hurling strongholds like Dungarvan,
Cappoquin and Lismore unable to field a
Senior team. This must eventually have an
adverse effect on our Inter-County team.
MOTIONS
The first motion, in the name of the
Abbeyside club, sought to have the County
Senior football team regraded to Junior, but
was decisively defeated.
Moving the motion, Mr. Seamus O’Brien
said they were not pressing it very strongly,
and more or less wanted the clubs to discuss it. They have been considering the
record of the County’s Senior football
teams over the past half century. They had
made no progress, and the standard of
football in the county today was not as high
as in other counties. They could not hope
to win an All-Ireland in the senior grade,
and it might be best if they went junior for a
few years at least. They believed they
would have a great chance of winning a
Junior All-Ireland. Carlow and Fermanagh,
he added, had benefitted greatly by regrading.
Mr. Liam Whelan (Kill) said it would be
a bad move to go Junior. They should stay
as they were.
Mr. V. Donoghue (Lismore) said in 1936
the county was regraded Junior in football
and they had a most unfortunate experience by being defeated in the Munster
final. The only football honours won by the
county was the Provincial junior title in
1948, but that year they also had a senior
team. The motion had nothing to defend it,
and was only a defeatist attitude.
Mr. Jim Cullen (Ardmore) said the footballers in the county got very little and by
going Junior they would be cutting out
another 20 players.
The Chairman, Mr. Moloney said it
would be a very bad move to go Junior. In
Munster they could beat Clare, Tipperary
and Limerick and could always give Cork
good challenge. He believed it would be
very bad for the game in the county.
Mr. O’Brien (Abbeyside) said he did not
agree it would be a backward step.
The motion was then put to the meeting
and was heavily defeated.
Another motion by Abbeyside, asking
that players transferring to and playing with
another club, be compelled to remain with
his new club for a period of at least two
years, was ruled out of order by the
Chairman.
Mr. O’Brien said it would bring more
stability to the clubs and would give them
more authority.
Ruling the motion out of order, the
Chairman said it was seeking to amend a
rule that was non-existent.
RULE 27
A great deal of interest was centred on
the Ballyduff Lr. motion seeking that playing
rules be amended only once in five years,
and that rule 27 (excluding games) be
revised every year.
Speaking for the motion, Mr. Eamonn
Cheasty said his club believed that the
opportunity should be given to members of
the Association to discuss the foreign
games rules every year rather then evey
three years, as at present. The time had
come, he said, when that rule no longer
served a purpose in its present form. They
felt it should be considered every year.
The Ballygunner club seconded the
motion.
Mr. Jim Cullen (Ardmore) asked why
Rule 27 was so very important that it
should be discussed every year, and all the
other rules only once every five years.
Mr. Cheasty: The others are only playing
rules and they could not be changing them
every year.
The motion was carried by 65 votes to
58.
A motion by they same club that Rule 28
be rescinded relating to attending foreign
dances was well beaten.
Speaking for the motion, Mr. Cheasty
said that some counties had no Vigilance
Committees. These committees were
sneaking on the activities of others and
reporting to the County Board. Last year in
the Co. Waterford they had suffered as a
result of this committee and anyone who
said they did not was not facing facts.
Because of that their club would like to see
the rule abolished.
Mr. Seamus Power (Mount Sion) said
allegations had been made that the
Vigilance Committee did not act impartially,
warranted a comment from the Chairman.
The Chairman said he would make
reference to that statement when dealing
with another motion that had been listed.
Mr. Jim Cullen said that people were
going around boasting that they had
attended the particular function which led
to the suspension of a County player.
Mr. P. Flanagan (Tramore) said as long
as there was a rule 27 they would have to
have a Vigilance Committee.
They same club’s motion that the foreign
games rule be rescinded was not accepted
by the Chairman as it was not the year for
discussing it at Congress.
“DID ACT IMPARTIALLY”
Another Ballyduff motion asking that an
investigation be held into the failure of the
Vigilance Committee to report fully and
impartially during 1963, was also ruled out
of order by the Chairman.
In ruling so, Mr. Moloney said the
Vigilance Committee was the preserves of
the Chairman. No one knew who they were
and they were trying to act to the best of
their ability. Any names submitted to him
had been dealt with according to rule.
Ballygunner Delegate: We should
appoint a Vigilance Committee to look after
the Vigilance Committee.
Chairman: If we had genuine Gaels we
would have no need for this Committee.
Mr. Dick McAllister (Brickey Rangers):
Why didn’t the Vigilance Committee report
everyone that was at the function being
referred to.
Mr. Cheasty: We do not think they carried out their duties impartially. I have no
objection to the suspension itself as the
rule was there and anyone that violated it
knew the consequences. But everyone
knows the Committee did not act impartially last year. It is futile trying to say they
did.
The Chairman said the only ones that
would know that the Vigilance Committee
did not act impartially were the ones that
were there themselves.
Mr. Cheasty: I do not mind the suspensions, but when members of the Vigilance
Committee go to these places and see
who were there and then do not want to
see everyone that was there it is a definite
reflection on their integrity.
Chairman: I am not accepting this
motion as it is out of order.
FOURMILEWATER MOTION
FAILS
A Fourmilewater motion that the Senior
hurling championship be played off in two
Divisions led to a lengthy discussion and
was only narrowly defeated by a vote of 8574.
Mr. Liam Ryan (Fourmilewater) said the
Chairman in his address had mentioned
the poor standard of hurling in the West,
and this motion was an effort to safeguard
the game in that Division. He felt if the
Senior championship was broken up into
two divisions like the Junior hurling it would
help to keep alive the game in the West.
The reason for clubs seeking regrading
he said was because they feared their fate
in the Senior grade. “What would happen
hurling in Fourmilewater if we met Mount
Sion in the opening round? This is the only
hope to keep hurling alive in West
Waterford.” he said.
John Fraher (Cappoquin): Waterford
hurling is at the cross roads, and now is the
time to look into the matter. I think it is a
very good thing to create competition in the
West, and if we had that a few years ago
we would not have had the regradings we
are having this year.
Seamus Power: As much as we appreciate the plight of hurling in the West I must
oppose this motion very strongly. Clubs in
the West would only have to play two
games and would then be in the county
final.
Mr. Fraher: If this is carried we will have
the same number of clubs in the West as
last year plus Fourmilewater.
The motion was put to the convention
but was defeated by 11 votes.
“ENGLISH DANCES”
Clubs running socials with English
dances was strongly criticised by Johnny
Coffey (Fourmilewater) when moving a
motion that Rule 29 be strictly enforced.
The Chairman said Clubs were
masquarading under the name of social
clubs and were running dances. But is was
very hard to get proof.
Mr. Coffey: We have GAA clubs openly
running dances.
Chairman: Some clubs have not the
gumption to run ceilis. They hope to “twist
their way” through the Association.
PLAYING FIELD FOR
KILMAC
The last motion on the Clar was from the
Kilmacthomas Club asking the Convention
to instruct the incoming County Board to
set up a Committee comprised of representatives of the County and Divisional
Boards and the Kilmacthomas club, with a
view to procuring a suitable playing field at
Kilmacthomas.
The Chairman, Mr. Moloney said that
while it would be a very good thing if
Kilmacthomas had their own playing field
he did not know if it was the County
Board’s duty to buy one for them. But if the
Kilmacthomas club went about getting one
the County Board would give them every
assistance.
A Kilmacthomas delegate said they had
a pitch in mind but they were one of the
poorest club’s in the county.
Mr. Nicholas McGrath suggested that
the incoming County Board consider the
possibility of it. They could help the club
that way, and the Board should remember
that it has more duties then running a
championship.
Mr. Seamus Grant (Mount Sion): There
are extenuating circumstances in
Kilmacthomas and all they are looking for
is help from the Board.
On the suggestion of the Chairman it
was agreed to discuss the matter at the first
meeting of the incoming Finance
Committee.

Harty Cup progress on the line
against fancied Bandon side
Dungarvan CBS
-vHamilton High School,
Bandon
On Wednesday, January
15th
In Castlemartyr
at 1.30 p.m.
HARTY Cup action returns
after the Christmas break on
today Wednesday, January
15th when the four Quarter
Finals in this year’s series
take place in four different
venues around the province.
The match with the most significance locally is, of course,
the clash of Dungarvan CBS
and Hamilton High School
Bandon as the ‘Brothers’ are
the only Deise school remaining in the competition.
Without the services of the St.
Augustines players this season, many shrewd followers
of the game are of the opinion
that the CBS have done well
to qualify for this stage of the
competition but that their
days as champions are numbered as they face a team
that have really impressed to
date and have a freshness
about them comparable to
that of Dungarvan Colleges
over the past two years.
Bandon finished second in
Group 3, their only defeat
being at the hands of one of
the championship favourites,
Ard Scoil Ris, Limerick in a
high scoring 4-20 to 3-14
encounter. In a tough Group,
they defeated St. Flannan’s
Ennis by 2-16 to 2-11, St.
Coleman’s College Fermoy
by 1-20 to 0-15 and De La
Salle Waterford by 2-15 to
0-8. In their four games they
have scored a total of 8-65
and conceded 6-54. This represents an average of 2-16
for and 1-15 against. This
portrays an impressive forward sextet though perhaps
a suspect defence which
hopefully the CBS can
expose in Castlemartyr.
When Bandon defeated
St. Flannan’s, they led by 2-9
to 0-6 at half time after playing with the strong wind but
they didn’t cave in in the second half which was a sign of
quality team, losing the half
by just 2-5 to 0-7. Hamilton’s
main man is their centre forward Michael Cahalane, who
plays at centre forward and
who scored a total of 1-8
against ‘Flannan’s’. When
Waterford beat Cork in the
Minor thriller in Pairc Ui Rinn
last year, Cahalane goaled
after just 50 seconds and he
contributed another point
later on. The Bandon team
includes a tight full back line
in their captain Micheal
Sweeney at number 3, and
Andrew O’Connell and Niall
Murray in the corners. Their
free scoring forwards include
the speedy duo Eoin O’Reilly
and Jonathan Mulcahy, ball
winner Darragh Curran and
goalgetter Trevor Horgan.
Hamilton High School are the
current Cork Senior champions, beating Midleton by
2-18 to 2-8 and their results
have shown that they are in
the quarter finals on merit and
they will be fancying their
chances of making the last
four at the expense of players
with two Harty Cup medals.
Dungarvan CBS made a
good start to this season’s
campaign with an impressive
1-16 to 0-14 win over
Western rivals Blackwater
C.S. at Fraher Field. They
followed this up with wins
over Midleton by 1-10 to 0-12
and against Rochestown by
1-15 to 1-10, the latter without the services of one of their
top scorers, the injured
Patrick Curran. Everything
was going full swing, therefore, until the CBS met
Nenagh CBS in their final outing but, the Tipp team, who
had not won any of their previous three games, deservingly took their first brace of
points, with an 0-14 to 0-9 victory.
In contrast to Hamilton
H.S. Dungarvan have scored
3-50 in their three games and
they have conceded 1-50.
This represents an average
of 0-15 for and 0-12 against,
which isn’t the more encouraging statistic of the two
teams playing today. Poor
displays
in challenge
matches over the Christmas
period hasn’t improved their
recent form so it appears that
it will take a huge effort from
the team today to keep on
track for a three in a row title
attempt locally.
Shaun Murray should
again man the goal for the
CBS and he has been a right
find this year at number 1.
Jersies number 2 and 4 will
be more than likely worn by
Michael Cronin and Cian
Culloo while Kevin Daly and
Shane Nugent will most likely
have numbers 3 and 6
respectively on their backs.
Jack O’Donnell and Darragh
Lyons are tipped to play in the
half back line and of the six
backs mentioned we will
have to wait and see who will
get the task of marshalling
Bandon’s
danger
man
Michael Cahalane. Cormac
Curran has been the CBS
leader on the field to date and
if he can repeat this form it
could ignite a strong local
challenge. Brickeys have
enjoyed a strong presence on
the team and
Cormac
O’Grady should complete a
Bushy Park pairing i lar na
pairce. Up front. Conor
Morrissey, Carthavh Barry,
Micheal Shine, Eamonn
Crotty and Aaron Donnolly
are scoring forwards while
the return of Patrick Curran
from injury should be both a
scoring and a morale boost
for the ‘Brothers’ in this difficult game.
It’s under no illusions so
that the County’s remaining
team in the series will travel to
Castlemartyr, but, playing to
their full potential, a semi final
spot can be secured by players who have the experience
of digging deep in previous
crucial games.
Once again the 1.30 pm
starting time militates against
the working follower of the
game and there is no doubt
but if all the knockout ties
were held on weekends,
there would be much bigger
attendances at fixtures such
as this.

Handball tradition
holding good
THE successful Handball tradition in the
County was further enhanced over the
Christmas period when a large group of
players and supporters from the St.
Augustines College based club once
again travelled to America for the
championships there. All the young
Deise handballers gave of their best at
this level and pride of place went to
Dungarvan clubman Darragh Lyons who
convincingly won the under 17 All
American Title.
The local club has made great
progress in recent years under the
guidance of Bro. Finbarr Spring and
his fellow handball enthusiasts and it is
encouraging to see their dedication to
the game rewarded as it was recently.
The sport of handball goes back a
long way locally with alleys in many
places around the county in days gone
by. The Kilgobinet alley was a big draw
in the Dungarvan area with such as
Mossie Butler, Declan Mulcahy, Pat
McGrath, Pat Noctor, John Kiely, Jim
Hurley, John Wall, John Joe Wright,
Martin Sandford, Christy Phelan, Colm
Bannon. Stephen Lyons, the McCarthy
brothers Martin and Pat, Anthony Kelly
and many more enjoying many hours of
enjoyment at this well appointed venue.
Handball has stood the test of time and
going on recent events this is set to
continue.
McGrath Cup
THE kingpins of Munster football Cork
and Kerry have qualified for the final of
this year’s McGrath Cup senior football
competition. The Rebels had a facile
6-16 to 0-7 win over U.L. at Mallow.
While Kerry were pushed all the way by
C.I.T. in Tralee before emerging 2-12 to
0-13 winners. It was interesting to hear
Cork Manager Brian Cuthbert say on
Sunday last how important it was to paly
three games in the competition.
Interestingly the so called 4 weaker
counties in the Province namely
Waterford, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary
withdrew from the competition in protest
at the seeded draw in the Munster SFC.
Kerry have not lost a game in the
competition in 7 years and they will be
hoping to extend that to 8 years in next
Sunday’s final.
Boost for
Westmeath
WESTMEATH GAA have received a
major boost ahead of the commencement of the National Football League.
The County Board have signed a three
year sponsorship deal with Renault
Ireland which includes all County teams
in both hurling and football. This is an
exciting deal for any county in the
current economic climate with many
counties struggling to find a sponsor.
Crystal Cup SH
FOR the second year in succession
Waterford senior hurlers bowed out of
the Crystal Cup competition to
University of Limerick. At wind and rain
lashed Carriganore on Sunday last the
Limerick College were winners on a 1-11
to 0-10 scoreline. Elsewhere Limerick
hammered Tralee I.T. 10-17 to 0-9, while
Tipperary had a facile 3-20 to 0-5 win
over Limerick I.T. U.L. return to
Carriganore this weekend where they
will face W.I.T. in a quarter-final tie.
Meanwhile, W.I.T. continued their
pre-paration for the Fitzgibbon Cup on
January 30th with a challenge game on
Monday night against Leinster Club
champions, Mt. Leinster Rangers.
Waterford senior hurlers were in action
last night, Tuesday against the Brian
Whelahan managed Offaly in a
challenge game played at Tinryland, Co.
Carlow. They hope to have another
game at the weekend.

the All-Ireland Intermediate championship club semi-final on Sunday,
February 2nd at Kinnegad, Co.

provide formidable opposition.
Meanwhile, congratulations to Lismore
club on being named Waterford Club of
the Year. A well deserved honour in
recognition of their achievements in
2013.

THE official Cork GAA website saw an
increase in traffic of more than one
million visitors in 2013.
The site received a total of 4.45
million hits, an increase of 26% on the
3.35 million in 2012.
The months of July, August and
September in 2013 all reported more
than 500,000 hits, something that never
happened before in three consecutive
months.
The involvement of the Cork senior
hurlers in an All-Ireland final and replay
contributed to the increase but club
activity accounted for the two days with
most views.

Park Hotel Sports Star
Award 2013
quarter of a century, building its
reputation, enhancing Waterford
sport and acknowledging not just
one champion each year, but
twelve or more who have been
honoured monthly for their
personal or team achievements.
Lynne McEnery, Womens
Boxing won the January Award,
taking the 48kg title and also the
“senior boxer of the tournament”
award in Sweden. Niamh Briggs,
had a superb game against
Scotland in Womens Rugby which
helped her country towards the
eventual Grand Slam. Soccer’s
Jim Goodwin, won his place in
Scotland as Captain of St. Mirren
while in the Ladies game, Ciara
Grant helped Arsenal win the F.A.
Cup for the 6th time in eight years.
Shauna
O’Brien
Became
National Swimming Champion in
the women’s 50m and 100m
butterfly events while Kelly Proper,
won three individual gold medals at
the National Senior Athletics
Championships.
It was a rich year for hurling, with
the younger generation making all
the sen-sational headlines, providing four Monthly Winners.
Tom Devine captained the
Dungarvan Colleges team to an
All-Ireland Senior “A” Colleges
Hurling Championship victory,
while Patrick Curran excelled in
Colleges Championships and was
a prominent member of County
Waterford’s All-Ireland Minor
Hurling Championship team.
Patrick was also top scorer in
Waterford’s All-Ireland victory over
Galway.
However, September saw Kevin
Daly earn his place as the outstanding Captain of the magnificent Waterford Minor Hurling team
that brought the Irish Press Cup
back to Waterford for the very first
time and the hurling tally was
brought to a climax when in
October the Passage forward
Owen Connors, was outstanding in
the remarkable victory over
Ballygunner in the Co. Senior
hurling final.
The fifth hurling place went to
Ballysaggart’s Stephen Bennett,
who was leading marksman and
outstanding in the County Junior
Hurling victory over Tramore, top
scorer in the Munster Junior
Hurling Championship, and helped
bring a first ever provincial title to
Waterford at this level.
Kevin Phelan kept the Golf flag
flying with victories in Ireland and
the US as well as a coveted place
in the 2013 U.S. Open. Robin
Dawson was the other monthly
winner in Golf taking the Irish Boy's
Amateur Open Champion-ship
playing on the Irish Boy's team that
won the Home International
Championship.
Horse Racing supremo, Henry
de Bromhead earned his place
with four very good winners, including a good double in Wexford and
a very good win at Gowran Park
with Buckers Bridge in November.
Those are the twelve from which
the Adjudicators will pick their
winner. It is an unenviable task, but
one which their experience, knowledge and integrity qualify them
admirably.
They
have
a
major
challenge ahead, for rather than
having to find a worthy winner, they
have the task of leaving many who
are suitably qualified behind.
They are up to the task and
some time after 11 p.m. on the 25th
January, the destination of the Blue
Riband of Waterford Sport will be
known.

WELCOME BACK
All in the club is delighted to see Ben
Gallagher back in the club after a years stint with
senior club Roanmore. A great addition to Kill
footballers and Fenor hurlers.
BIG DEVELOPMENTS
As everyone knows now the big news story in
East Waterford GAA circles last week was the
joint forces of Kill and Fenor in hurling and football for 2014. These eleventh hour negotiations
came to light the weekend before last and it sees
Kill not fielding a hurling ryan and Fenor not fielding a football team with both clubs assisting each
other in the respective codes.
It was no secret that Kill have been struggling
with numbers in the hurling department over the
last 12 months and with the 3 Burns brothers
gone to Dunhill, Stevie Kirwan on the injury list
and Kieran Dunphy gone to New Zealand it was
going to very challenging to say the least for
2014. While I can't speak for Fenor they were in
a similar situation regarding football and so the
clubs put their heads together and come up with
a sensible solution. Naturally, Kill would have to
be in a position to field a hurling team but we are
living in challenging times and it's a trend that will
continue in the years ahead I'm afraid. Transfers
were lodged last Friday to the Board and with 25
requests in, these were mainly for insurance purposes so realistically the club will only have 10/11
hurlers involved with Fenor. So, interesting timed
indeed for all concerned, and let's hope both
clubs can gel and make it work for 2014 at least.

Numbers drawn were 3- 21- 24- 27. There was

Tallow
SPONSORED BY McGRATH'S PHARMACY, TALLOW
AGM
The Annual General Meeting of CLG Tulach
an Iarainn took place last Friday evening with a
good mixed attendance of young and old where
club matters over the previous twelve months
were dissected and discussed.
The day-to-day accounts were presided over
and presented in the usual efficient manner by
our excellent treasurer Mairead Sheehan and
these painted a picture that is in tune with the
overall picture of the town and the country ie a
difficult 2013 but with renewed hope for 2014.
Less income from sponsorship, club Lotto and
membership meant an overall deterioration of our
financial position by about €5,000 from the end
of 2012. Careful resource and financial management and spending cuts have meant that the
impact of that reduced income has not been felt
as keenly as it could have been.
The Lotto account, presented by Fiona
McDonnell and Donna Buckley showed reduced
sales and increased prizemoney given out
throughout 2013 which led to a reduced contribution to the running of our club in 2013. There
were four jackpots won in 2013 totalling over
€20,000 in prizemoney. Chairman Denis Tobin
expressed thanks to Mick Kearney for his continued generosity in sponsoring the Lotto.
The Deise Draw account was again carefully
managed and maintained by David O’Brien and
he reported a slight decrease in sales but
expressed confidence that he could hold the
numbers he had. This would continue the excellent contribution of the Deise Draw to the development fund of the club and to paying the everincreasing County Board levy which at this stage
makes the temporary Sean Quinn insurance levy
look like a short-term fix.
Chairman Denis Tobin, in his address to the
meeting gave a report on playing matters and
expressed his thanks to all his assistants and fellow board members for their help during the year.
The majority of the outgoing executive mem-
bers were re-elected with Finn McCarthy being
elevated to the position of vice-chairman.
SPONSORSHIP
CLG Tulach an Iarainn is delighted to
announce that McGrath's Pharmacy, Tallow are
the new principal sponsors of Tallow GAA club.
They are a long established business in the town
providing service and employment to countless
Tallow people over the years and we thank
Roger and Helaine McGrath for their generous
support.
MEMBERSHIP
Members of CLG Tulach an Iarainn are kindly
reminded to renew their membership for 2014.
Please contact Lindsay Murphy or any member
of the executive.
GAA NATIONAL CLUB DRAW
Tickets are now available for the GAA
National Club Draw with tickets available at €10
from any committee member. While we realise
that club members and supporters are hardpressed at this time of year, the array of prizes
on offer is extremely tempting. Trips to Australia,
Boston and New York are among the fantastic
prizes available. It must also be stressed that
every penny of your €10 goes to your local GAA
club.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Stuart Barry on his recent
marriage to Aileen Courtney from Castlehaven.

RUNNING GROUP
A big thank you to everyone who turned up on
Monday night for our run. After 1 or 2 more
weeks, people are going to find their proper pace
and really enjoy improving each week. Again, the
main objective of the run is focused on the construction of a running track around Kirwan Park.
Once the track is in-place, it will benefit parents, children and grand-children forever. It will
be a safe and secure place to exercise in the winter nights and parents can easily monitor their
children.
Our only rules for our running league are:
• Hi Vis Vest is essential - no hi vis, no run.
Headlamp advised!!
• Over 16’s only.

GAA CLUB NOTES
Geraldines
Geraldines
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is now overdue; the club needs
the finances in early to offset expenses like Team
Affiliations and Players Insurance. The club cannot play players who have not paid their membership as they are uninsured. This leads to an
issue with affiliating teams because if players do
not take up membership then they cannot play,
so should we bother affiliating certain teams at
all? Basically, if you are interested in playing and
want to be guaranteed a team to play on; pay
your membership to Steven Ronayne now. We
appreciate your co-operation.
PARK HOTEL
We have arranged with The Park Hotel that
all members would be able to avail of their Gym
facilities at a cost of €5 per visit. If you want to
improve your fitness before the serious training
begins, then this would be a good place to begin.
LOTTO
There was no winner of the lotto this week.
The numbers drawn were 2, 13, 17 and 29.
Winners of €20 were Evan Tobin, Ann Brien,
Fiona Tobin, Sophie and Dylan Mernin, Evan
Tobin. Next draw will take place on the 10th of
January and the jackpot is €3,950 and 3 tickets
for a €5. The draw will be in Kereen Bar.
FIT4LIFE
76 people showed up for the first Aglish Fit 4
Life, which is a huge number for the first night of
any event. To the 76 who turned up, well done,
to anyone thinking of doing it, head down to the
Aglish Community Hall at 7.30 pm, it will be great
fun. Due to the success of the first night, Aglish
Fit 4 Life is going to run on Tuesdays and
Fridays. Again, your level of fitness doesn’t matter, it the enthusiasm that counts. Participants
must wear Hi-vis vests, come along and bring a
friend with you, the more the merrier. More info
on Facebook aglishfunrun or 0868474285. Cost
is €2 per night with all money collected going to
the Children's Hospital, Crumlin.
GAA NATIONAL CLUB DRAW
The GAA has launched an initiative to raise
much needed funds for local clubs. These tickets
have been issued to players and committee
members, so if you want to be in with a chance

An
BRONNADH NA MBONN DO 2013
Ba é Liam Ó Lonáin, peileadóir sinsear le Port
Láirge, a bhí mar aoi speisialta ar an 30ú Eanair
i Halla Pobail na Rinne. Bhí boinn peile an chontae le bronnadh ar na peileadóirí mionúir agus fé
16 agus boinn an Iarthair fé 16 le bronnadh
chomh maith. I láthair chomh maith, bhí cathaoirleach CLG na Rinne Noel Ó Murchadha agus
thug sé ardmholadh do imreoirí óga chlub na
Gaeltachta as a gcuid iarrachtaí i rith na bliana
agus mhol sé do gach éinne a bhí i láthair
smaoineamh air go bhfuil an imreoir is laige
chomh tabhachtacht leis an imreoir is láidre ar an
bpáirc agus níos tabhachtaí ná sin arís, an cairdeas a thagann as a bheith páirteach sa CLG.
Labhair Liam Ó Lonáin faoin obair dian atá ar
siúl ag na hoiliúineoirí sa chlub faoi aois agus
ghaibh sé buíochas as an tacaíocht atá á fháil ag
na scoileanna Gaeltachta ó chlubanna na Rinne
agus an tSean Phobail. Mhol sé na imreoirí óga
as a bheith páirteach in imeachtaí an CLG, atá
sláintiúil agus go dtabharfaidh sé chun cinn iad i
ngach gnéith den saol.
Tugadh aitheantas do Chriostóir Breathnach
agus Bryan Frinseach, a bhuaigh boinn uile
Éireann i 2013. Bhuaigh Criostóir boinn iomána
le Port Láirge, Coláistí na nDéise agus Scoil na
mBráithre. Bhuaigh Bryan bonn peile le Coláiste
Abhaistín. Tugadh aitheantas chomh maith do
Mheánscoil San Nioclás as cluiche leathcheannais iomána na Mumhan a shroisint don chéad
uair agus do Scoil Náisiúnta Bhaile Mhic Airt as
an craobhchomórtas a bhuachaint don chéad
uair le os cionn scór bliain. Aithníodh go raibh
mí-ádh ar Scoil Náisiúnta na Rinne sa chluiche
ceannais iomána i 2013.
Bhí iar-chathaoirleach Bord na nÓg an chontae Seán Breathnach i láthair agus aithníodh a
chuid oibre le blianta fada dílis don Chumann
Lúthchleas Gael sa chontae. Toghadh Seán mar
leas-chathaoirleach ar CLG na Rinne le deanaí,
mar sin is deas a fheiscint go mbeidh sé
gníomhach fós sa CLG. Labhair cathaoirleach
na Gaeltachta Tomás Mac Craith faoin obair cóitseála atá ar siúl faoi láthair acu siúd a thugann a
gcuid ama go fial flaithiúilach do aos óg an
cheantair.
Ar deireadh, tháinig laochra na hoíche aníos
chun a gcuid boinn a bhailiú ó Liam Ó Lonáin
agus d'aithin duine nó beirt duine fásta a bhí i
láthair go bhfuil cupla orlach ar a laghad sa bhreis
ag na lads óga seo thar a muintir rompu. Chuir
rúnaí na Gaeltachta Fionn Mac Giolla Chuda
deireadh leis an oíche agus mhaoigh sé do gach
éinne go mbeadh traenáil ag tosnú arís go luath
don pheil, mar go mbeidh na babhtaí den
gcraobhchomórtas ag tosnú go luath i Mí
Feabhra.
PEIL FÉ 8
Ba iad an dream is óige - geall leis - an dream
is luaithe ar an bhfód do 2014, nuair a thugadar
cuairt ar Pháirc Uile Aimsire an tSean Phobail
chun seisiún peile a dheanamh le Liam Ó
Lonáin. Bhí deichniúir i láthair ar an lá, ach tá súil
againn go mbeidh sé seo ag dul i méid.
CRUINNÍU CINN BHLIANA 2014
D'fhill an AGM ar an Rinn arís i 2014, tar éis
dó a bheith i bPáirc Cholmáin i 2013 agus bhí
slua maith ann ar an oíche. Chuir an cathaoirleach Tomás Mac Craith fáilte roimh na baill agus
léigh an rúnaí Fionn Mac Giolla Chuda miontuairiscí na bliana do 2013, leanta ag tuairisc an
rúnaí.
Ansin, bhí tuairisc bliaintiúil airgidis an chisteora á chur i láthair ag Stiofán Ó Cuirrín agus
tugadh ardmholadh do as a chuid oibre cruinn,
soléir.
Aithníodh go raibh roinnt mhaith
infheistíochta deanta i 2013 i dtreallamh agus go
raibh laghdú ar an ioncaim ó na bailiúcháin airgid.
Mholadh go mbeidh géarghá le coiste imeachtaí
sa chlub chun dul i gcabhair le fiontair dá shórt
agus le cúrsaí bídh do bhronntaí, blitzes &rl.
Thug an cathaoilreach óráid misniúil uaidh ag
feachaint siar ar 2013 agus chun cinn ar 2014
agus cuir sé dóchas i mbaill an chlub go mbainfimís an méad is fearr as an mbliain do aos óg
an cheantair agus go bhfaighimís breis-fuinneamh a chur isteach i gcúrsaí maoinithe an
chlub.
I dtoghadh na n-oifigeach, chuaigh na daoine
céanna chun cinn don cathaoirleacht, rúnaí agus
cisteoir. Cheapadh Seán Uada mar leaschathaoirleach ansin agus dúirt an rúnaí go
mbeadh sé sásta cúram an OCP a thógaint ar
féin arís do 2014, ach le cead tacaitheoir a
roghnú.

I speak, of course, of Niamh Briggs who has
graciously agreed to take time out of her busy
work and training schedule to join us on the night

to get back out there on the sidelines we hope to
see you coming along to get behind the lads
here. On a related topic we want to wish a swift
recovery to U-21 selector Michael O'Halloran
who got into a small altercation with a tackle bag

Date for Your Diary - Club AGM: The juvenile club invites all members and interested parties to the club AGM which will take place next
week on Wednesday, January 22nd at 7:30pm

possibly get. The election of officers will take
place on the night and we strongly urge as many
parents, coaches and volunteers to make their
way to the AGM if possible.
Back to the Playing Fields: After the Winter
break some teams are already back training in
preparation for their respective championships
and it will be primarily football that will be the
focus for the next few weeks and months. Please
keep an eye on the notes, Facebook and Twitter

Sean began his footballing career with the club

Kill in 1952 County Final in 1956 he won a
Phelan Cup medal defeating a Mount Sion team
0-8 to 0-4 and also in 1957 defeating De La Salle
on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-6 points. He played in

1960 keeping a clean sheet 1-3 to 0-5 points and
again in 1964 Ardmore giving a great performance in goal 2-3 to 0-8 points. Sean also played
in the County Final of 1966 they were defeated
by Kill on a scoreline of 0-7 to 1-2. Sean represented the club as assistant secretary, secretary
and a treasurer in the late 1960s to 1979 and a
Vice President in 1972. Sean was a selector on
a Railway Cup Football team that defeated
Leinster 0-10, Munster 2-14.

Mullins stars as
favourites dominate
at Navan
LAST Sunday at Navan will be a day the bookmakers won’t be keen to
remember, as only a last fence exit prevented the favourites from winning all seven races on the card. Willie Mullins proved dominant, with
Ruby Walsh riding Aklan to win the 2014 Navan Membership Maiden
Hurdle and Un De Sceaux to win the Follow Navan On Facebook
Hurdle, whilst Patrick Mullins rode Milsean to win the Trim INH Flat
Race.
The most valuable race on the card was the Foxrock Handicap
Chase and it was the Terence O’Brien-trained She’s Got Grit that battled
her way to a ½-length victory under Adrian Heskin.
Lordan doubles up
at Dundalk
WAYNE Lordan was the man to follow on Friday evening’s card at
Dundalk, riding a double on the night. He got off the mark in the
Crowne Plaza Hotel Race & Stay Maiden, riding the Eddie Lynamtrained Not Your Call to a comfortable 1¾ lengths victory.
The Lordan brace was completed two hours later courtesy of the
thrilling success of the Willie McCreeery-trained Tetard in the Crowne
Plaza Leading Jockey & Trainer Championship Handicap, with the
four-year-old getting up in the last stride to score by a nose.

Gigginstown at Thurles
BRYAN Cooper got his new
relationship with Gigginstown
House Stud off to the perfect start
at Thurles on Monday week last,
riding Toner D’Oudairies to win the
featured Listed Thurles Racecourse
Supporters Club Chase.
Trained by Gordon Elliott, the
seven-year-old was left in front at
the fourth-last fence and held on by
two lengths.
Elsewhere on the card, Willie
Mullins was in double form,
saddling the Ruby Walsh-ridden
Urano to win the thurles.ie Maiden
Hurdle and the Patrick Mullinsridden Beluckyagain to win the
Holycross Mares Flat Race.
THE sensational French mare Moonlight Cloud has been retired by her
trainer Freddie Head. The six-year-old failed to sign off her career with
a victory when she could only finish sixth in the Hong Kong Mile, but
before that had won three consecutive Group 1 races in France in sensational style.
Moonlight Cloud landed six Group 1 races in all and excelled at
Deauville, where she claimed three consecutive renewals of the Prix
Maurice de Gheest and a Prix Jacques le Marois, but perhaps her most
impressive display came in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in
October when she showed remarkable acceleration to score in spectacular fashion.
The Tullow Tank aims
for Leopardstown
THE Tullow Tank will have his next run in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at
Leopardstown on February 9th before heading to Cheltenham in
March.
Philip Fenton's six-year-old has won his last four races, including two
Grade Ones in December, in the style of a rapidly-improving horse and
will now aim for a top-level hat-trick.
Solwhit ruled out
of Cheltenham
SOLWHIT has been ruled out of an attempt to retain his World Hurdle
title in March by his trainer Charles Byrnes. Byrnes stated: "He's not
going to Cheltenham and he will have to get a longer break. I don't
know if he will be back later in the year - we'll see, as it is not a serious
injury.”

Vautour Grinds It Out
At Punchestown
WILLIE Mullins took centre stage at
Punchestown on Saturday, completing a double that included the
featured Grade 2 Moscow Flyer
Novice Hurdle with the promising
Vautour. However, despite his start-
ing price of 1/4, Ruby Walsh had to
work hard on the five-year-old to
secure a ¾-length victory.
The winner is expected to be a
leading Irish hope in the Supreme
Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham
Festival.
The Mullins double was completed
in
the
concluding
Punchestown Rated Hurdle, with
City Slicker grinding out a three
lengths victory.
SHARK Hanlon will definitely
run Hidden Cyclone, runnerup to Benefficient in the
Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet
Chase and the unsuccessful
subject of an appeal against
the result, in Saturday's
Sodexo Clarence House
Chase at Ascot.
The nine-year-old, who is a
11-2 chance for the weekend's big race with Paddy
Power, has twice picked up
some of Paddy's prize money
this season, having before
Leopardstown finished third in
the Paddy Power Gold Cup at
Cheltenham and the Carlow
conjuror thinks he may well
have a Queen Mother
Champion Chase horse on
his hands.
Hanlon said: “He'll definitely run and he came out of
Cheltenham well, but he's
come out of the Paddy Power
Dial-A-Bet Chase brilliantly
and very fresh and I'm very
happy with him as he's in
great form.
“The trip at Ascot will probably suit him because the
ground will be on the slow
side and from there I'm hoping that he will run well and
then we can go back to
England for the Queen
Mother Champion Chase.
“They didn't change the
Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet
Chase result, but it's very hard
for them to do that after the
decision on the day. I just
thought on the day if the two
horses had run to the line
straight, he would probably
have beaten him but it's water
under the bridge now and it's
onwards and upwards.”
Paddy
rates
Hidden
Cyclone a 10-1 shout for
Champion Chase glory.
Hanlon continued: “He'd
have to have a serious
chance on Saturday if we're
thinking of going for the
Champion Chase. There's no
Sprinter Sacre in there so
we'll find out how good the
horse is.”

SHORT COURSE LEAGUE
75 OUT of 91 runners all finish within a minute or our winner Ann O’Donovan
What a fantastic way to
start the Winter League in
2014, to predict your own
time! The clock started at 30
minutes and slowly but surely
the hall stared to empty out
with runners heading out the
Youghal road on their first
Winter League run this year.
The conditions were tough
with wind and rain however it
didn’t deter runners from taking on this challenge which
was a great race and very
tight at the finish line.
The winner on the night
was Ann O’Donovan who
clocked 0:00, well done Ann
super judgement! The top 5
runners faster than their predicted times were Angeline
Drennan
+1,
Eoghan
McCarthy +2, Majella Keogh
+2, Marie O’Donovan +2 and
Marian Kilduff +2. All of these
5 runners were within 2
seconds of Ann and judged
there run almost to perfection!!
The top 5 runners slower
than their predicted times
were Lisa O’Sullivan +3,
Eddie Dee +6, Tommy
Lenihan +10, Melissa Keith
+13 and Mairead Murphy
+15.
Well done, it’s not an easy
task and you came very
close. On another Nancy
Foley would have been
delighted with her run, running 3:45 faster than she
thought as would Ian Cliff
4:26, Stephan Lannon 4:54
and Bill Keevers 6:55, well
done ye were just running too
well!! There were 22 runners
slower than their predicted
time and 67 runners faster on
the night. 75 runners out of 91
all finished within a minute of
the winner Ann, so well done
to everybody on what was a
very close call.

post after the clock hit zero
last week and she hit the line
at exactly 0.00. Well done
Agnes. It was not easily
earned as there were so
many that were so close.
In fact, Nikki Kiely and
David Regan were exactly
spot on with their predicted
time as well but it was Agnes
who was first in the finishing
tunnel. It was a great night for
accuracy which was the aim
of the night as a grand total of
20 runners were within 10
seconds of their predicted
time.
It was almost a Modeligo
double as Niamh O’Donovan
finished the long route just
one second slower than predicted and it was her mam
Anne that secured the victory
in the short route, Vince is
certainly passing on all his
running expertise!! Well done
Niamh.
There were also a few
familiar faces in the top ten.
Yev Chizikov is always there
or thereabouts and he will be
well pleased with being just 2
seconds slower than predicted, Ray Burke was the
same so well done Ray.

An Ghaeltacht Aird Mhór AC Running quote
AN Ghaeltacht Aird Mhór Athletics Club will hold its AGM in the
GAA Clubhouse, Ardmore, this Thursday, 16th January at 7.00
p.m. We encourage current members to attend and parents of
children intending to join the Club this year are also very
welcome to come along.
We wish all our members and supporters a very Happy New
Year and we look forward to a successful and enjoyable
athletics season in 2014.
Michael
Coleman
and
Padraig Begley were just
three seconds slower than
predicted so they obviously
kept the training going over
the
Christmas.
Liam
Kavanagh and Tom Moroney
crossed the line together just
4 seconds slower than predicted and such was the pace
to get to the finish line Noel
Drohan, Brid Veale and Jim
Wilson were all clocked at 5
seconds outside of their time.
Commiserations to those
who had only just reached
home and as they crossed
the line they heard the clock
go off. Paul McGrath was just
one second faster than predicted and equally unlucky
were Josie Ui Chuirrin, Alan
Cullen and Tom Kiely as all
three were just twos seconds
too fast. Tom Leahy and Colin
Lyons were just in ahead of
them, 3 seconds too fast and
Paschal Proctor was another
to almost get it spot on as he
was just 4 seconds too fast.
Well done to all the runners and it’s back to the normal system for this week.

MICHAEL ROCHE CARPETS SERIES
26th ANNUAL KIELY MONUMENTAL COLLIGAN CUP
Ray Hahessy by a second
THE inclement weather we
have been experiencing
these past couple of weeks
continued in earnest again
Sunday afternoon for the 26th
staging
of
the
Kiely
Monumental Colligan Cup. A
little earlier the McGrath
newsagent’s Juvenile event
was postponed and will be refixed for another day.
With the difficulties securing race permits these days it
was decided that the Senior
race should go ahead, ironically by starting time of 2 pm
the rain thankfully had more
or less stopped and it made
for an enjoyable race for all
who participated.
So well done to all the runners that took part and thanks
to you all for supporting this
great race. Thanks also to the
spectators who withstood the
conditions and came out to
support the runners as they
covered the three and a half
laps of the wood.
By the time all runners had
been sent on their way by our
clockman Liam O’Donnell at
the start line and they had the
3 and a half laps covered
totalling a distance of 5 miles
they were well and truly
grouped together all were
within a couple of hundred
metres as they approached
the finish line.
It was a difficult Sunday to
predict times, with the under
foot conditions wet and
mucky and only 16 runners
were on the right side of the
clock and a whopping 88
were all too fast. Mixed
among those who were on
the right side was Ray
Hahessy who claimed victory
for the first time. Ray went
one better from his last year’s
performance when he was so
close finishing in 2nd place, a
second on the wrong side of
the clock but this year he was
also a second but this time he
got on the right side of the
clock to record a famous and
most popular victory and
become the 22nd annual winner of the event.
Conor Murray was 2nd
behind Ray, 12 seconds out
with Tom Moroney 3rd 18
seconds out, two of our
friends from Waterford AC
filled 4th and 5th places when
Keith O’Driscoll was 21
seconds out and Brian
Cuddihy 22 seconds off the
mark. Michael Dunford and
Colin Lyons were most
unlucky as both were just 2
seconds too fast. Next year
guys.
FIRST FIVE MEN:
Ray Hahessy
Conor Murray
Tom Moroney
Keith O’Driscoll
Brian Cuddihy
DIANE BEHAN CLAIMS
LADIES SHIELD
IN the Ladies shield race it
was Waterford’s Diane
Behan who claimed victory
over
West
Waterford’s
Corinna Walsh. Diane finished 6th overall in the race
and was 22 seconds off her
predicted time but on the right
side of the clock. Corinna
finished 10th overall 49
seconds
outside
her
predicted time.
Both these Ladies have
run on many successful
teams together over many
years and both are still as
enthusiastic for the sport as
ever.
The unusual stat from the
Ladies event this year was
despite the big ladies entry in
the race only Diane and
Corinna were on the right
side of the finish clock; in
other words all the other
female runners were all faster
than the times they predicted.
VICTOR MULLINS CUP
GOES TO KEITH
O’DRISCOLL
Victor Mullins was the creator of this style of race and it
was he who came up with the
handicap timing system
which has been used now for
the past 22 years in this
event.
Each year Victor presents
the Victor Mullins Cup to the
first person on the right side
of the clock that has never
ran the Colligan Cup before.
This year’s winner was
Keith
O’Driscoll
from
Waterford who was delighted
he made the trip to the event
as he was also among the
overall prize winners when
finishing 4th.
Our thanks go to Victor for
his help and involvement with
this race each year.
MANY THANKS
Our thanks to all concerned with last Sunday’s
Kiely Monumental Colligan
Cup race which was held on
a difficult day for anyone to be
out. A huge thanks to our
great sponsors and local
athletics supporters for 26
unbroken year’s David and
Margaret Kiely of Kiely
Monumental.
We thank Margaret Kiely
for her attendance on Sunday
to present all the winners with
their prizes. Unfortunately,
David was a little under the
weather on the day and
Colligan Wood wasn’t the
place to be last Sunday with
any kind of sickness.
To the numerous people
who looked after the entries
especially Brid and Megan.
Thanks to Liam our expert
chip timing operator another
successful event last Sunday,
not even the weather could
stop this man.
Thanks to Ann Dunford for
looking after the prizes for the
race. Thanks to Liam
O’Donnell who looked after
the race start, to John and
David Coleman for photos
and Conor and Jamie for
everything else.
Thanks to our stewards
who braved the elements on
a bad day to be standing out.
Our stewards never leave us
down no matter what the
weather, a big thank you
here.
Many thanks to John
O’Halloran and the staff at
Coillte who worked so hard all
of last week getting the wood
back in order after the huge
amount of damage done with
the inclement weather.
Without all their help we
couldn’t have staged the
event at all.
A special thanks also to
Pat Dunford who was out with
shovel and pick on Saturday
making the under foot conditions a little safer for us all in
the wood.

22nd ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN
TEN MILE ROAD RACE
Minister Leo Varadker to lead
out 2,000 runners
WE are delighted to
announce that Minister for
Transport, Tourism and Sport
Leo Varadkar TD will be participating in the John Treacy
Dungarvan 10 on Sunday,
January 26th.
The Minister, a keen runner has very close family connections here in Dungarvan
will be among the 2,000 runners facing the starter’s gun
at 1 pm on the day. We had
had good elite fields in the
past, but this year’s elite end
of the business sees without
question the best of the best
in the country with both
national marathon champions male and female running.
There’s 4 sub 2.15 male
marathoners in the field and
to cap it there’s 6 sub 3 hour
female marathoners taking
part.
So the scene is set now for
the club’s premier road race
of the year and the race gets
under way at the Youghal
Road at 1 p.m. sharp. The
club and town are in an
advanced stage of preparation for our big day and its all
hands on deck now to ensure
that all race day systems are
in place.
It has been a very busy
few weeks preparing for what
will be the largest road race
ever held in the town as a
huge field of 2,000 runners
are fully signed up to run. The
race now in its 22nd year
pays tribute to one of the
great’s of Irish athletes our
own John Treacy. John plays
a hands on role in the event
and will participate once
again this year. Hopefully,
now the weather will play its
part too.
We are also delighted to
report that we have a huge
local entry which is very
encouraging and for all those
for whom this will be their first
ten mile, keep up the good
work your almost there now.

This means, of course, all
you have to do on race day is

pinned it to the FRONT of
your club running singlet.
When you have finished the

you will be asked to remove
your race number, on returning your race number at the
goodie bag area you will

bag with lots of treats for you
to enjoy after the race and
you will also receive a high
quality dri-fit Nike running top.
After the race refreshments
will be provided in the sports
centre.
On the subject of refreshments, just to say once again,
this is one race where the
club really relies on the goodwill and the support of our
loyal club members. This
race is the biggest undertaking by the club each year and
as a result we rely heavily on
your support.
At the winter league last
week and tonight forms were
handed out to all the runners
as we are seeking people
that might be in a position to
help out in any way. We need
people to steward the course
and also to make sandwiches
for after the race.
If you haven’t already filled
out one of these forms and
may be able to help out, we
would appreciate you filling
one out. Each runner is
asked to state in what
capacity they will be able to
help out and to give us their
contact details.
We will in turn contact you.
The club needs as many
members and friends to help
us make this a great race and
a great day for West
Waterford.
Athlete of the Year Winter
quarter winner
THE club’s athlete of the year
competition for the 2013
season
finished
on
December 31st. After the last
3 months, the winter quarter
we must congratulate Ray
Hahessy who claimed the
club’s athlete of the year
accolade for that quarter.
Ray had a very busy
quarter with notable performances in the club’s James
Hughes cross country race,
The Brickey 5, Turkey Trot
and Waterford half marathon
as well as the various
leagues throughout the 3
month period, Onra Power
also finished up with 13
points for those month’s but
as Onra is a previous monthly
winner Ray gets the accolade, Sharon Higgins and
Corinna Walsh had joint 3rd
placings with 12 points each.
We will shortly be
announcing the overall winner of athlete of the year for
2013. Incidentally, Ray
capped off a memorable
week as not alone did he win
this competition but on
Sunday he won the Kiely
Monumental Colligan cup.

GENERAL SPORT
Dungarvan draw away
to unbeaten Clonakilty
Clonakilty .......................... 0;
Dungarvan ........................ 0.
ON Sunday last Dungarvan
made the long journey to
Clonakilty through the worst
weather imaginable. After we
got changed, the rain wind
and hail stopped magically
and we did an intense warm
up. This game was our most
important game to date as
Clonakilty are just one point
ahead of us at the top of
league and they haven't been
beaten yet this year. The
game started at an unreal
pace with Dungarvan on top
and attacking for the first ten
minutes.
Dungarvan changed their
game plan this week as
Clonakilty have a first division
player who is Munster's top
goal scorer and she needed
to be marked out. This was
the tough job was given to
Aoife McGovern who had her
hands full but was more than
capable of keeping her under
control.
Emma Dunne slotted back
into midfield after being out
with injury, she played a wonderful game controlling the
midfield with her strength and
skill. Clonakilty played the
whole game at a furious pace
attacking in droves and once
inside the circle, they looked
very dangerous with some
close shots.
However,
Dungarvan's
defence of Lucinda Shrubb,
Tina
Landers,
Lindsey
Keane, Denise Egan and
Julie Harty worked tirelessly
supporting eachother and
cleared all of Clonakilty's
attacks effectively.
Twenty minutes into the
game, there was a quick pass
to the left winger who ran at
the Dungarvan goal and only
for the quick moving of
Lucinda who had to slide
tackle and take ball and
player out, to stop a certain
goal.
Dungarvan got one corner
in the first half, Aoife passed
to Lindsey who passed back
to Aoife however the
Clonakilty defence seemed to
predict the move and cleared
their lines. In the forward line
Ann Marie Tutty, Sharon
Duggan and Maria Conroy
played super hockey passing
skilfully amongst eachother,
but the Clonakilty defence
was so strong they continued
to keep Dungarvan out.
At half-time it remained 00, Lindsey gave us a good
talk to keep focused and
keep up the pressure.
Clonakilty had the tip off
and from the off they attacked
and won a series of short corners. This game was so
entertaining with end to end
stuff and neither side willing to
give anything away.The
umpire in this half gave
Dungarvan nothing and gave
Clonakilty so many chances
in total around 12 short corners from which they never
converted.
Dungarvan's defence for
short corners of Lindsey,
Aoife, Emma, Tina and had
their hands full to clear their
lines under pressure. On one
occasion Clonakility had a
direct shot on goal which
Lucinda saved but such was
the power behind the shot
that it reflected high in the air
and she had to palm the ball
from above her head for a
second save.
Aine Lynch and Olivia
Phelan came on in the
second half and both created
some super chances with
their fitness and skill rattling
the Clonakilty defence.
As time was running out
Dungarvan got a quick break
from our superb young midfielder Heather Shanahan
who gave a great pass to Lisa
Fitzgerald who in turn caused
hassle in the forward line with
her speed and won our second corner of the game. From
this, Lindsey made a perfect
stop but had her shot saved
as the keeper dived but as
lindsey tried for the rebound

Dungarvan Credit Union Racketball Final
the keeper stayed lying on
the ball which should have
resulted in a penalty flick but
Clonakilty were awarded a hit
out despite our protests.
Again Clonakilty attacked and
now both sides were getting
tired but not willing to give up.
When the full time whistle
went, we had to be content
with a draw.
Dungarvan should be
happy with their performance
as no player could have given
any more. Forwards came
back to support mid-field, and
the mids in turn supported
their defence, the fresh legs
coming on was invaluable
today in such a fast paced
game. Lucinda made some
wonderful saves to keep us in
it to the end. Overall, it was a
fantastic team performance,
well done to all.
Two
weeks
ago,
Dungarvan beat Waterford
3-0 at home, with great goals
coming
from
Aoife
McGovern, Elsa Griffin, and
Ann Marie Tutty.
We will play Church of
Ireland at home next
Saturday at 2 pm.
Team: Lucinda Shrubb
(goalie), Tina
Landers,
Lindsey Keane, Julie Harty
(captain), Denise Egan, Aoife
McGovern, Emma Dunne,
Heather Shanahan, Sharon
Duggan, Ann Marie Tutty,
Maria Conroy, Aine Lynch,
Olivia Phelan, Lisa Fitzgerald.
THE conclusion of the
Dungarvan Credit Union sponsored racketball team tournament took place at the centre
last Friday night, 10th January
when the teams of Ray Moore
and Paddy Walsh were in
opposition. This tournament
proved very popular with all, as
participants were guaranteed a
minimum of 5 matches as the
format used was 'round robin'.
With Ray ko'd, Paddy's team
were awarded the first rubber to
put his team 2 points ahead. At
number 3 Alan Manahan
returned the situation to parity
as playing very well as he has
done throughout the whole
competition he saw off the gallant efforts of Niall Fahey as he
won 15-2, 15-8. So with the
final finely balanced it all hinged
on the 2's for Ray it was Liam
Waters while for Paddy there
was Eddie Dee. This was one
of the most exciting and keenly
contested ties in the whole
competition and while the
record books will point to a 2-0
15-13, 15-11 to Eddie those
present will all agree it was
much closer than that as both
men sweated buckets for their
team in pursuit of glory but as
they say there can only be one
winner and on this occasion it
was Eddie and Paddy's team
that were victorious and
claimed the Credit Union
Trophy.
Raymond Moore on behalf
of the Credit Union thanked all
those who participated in the
competition which had run
smoothly over the last few
months, he congratulated
Paddy Walsh the tournament
director on a very well organised event and said that the
Credit Union were delighted to

RACKETBALL LADDER
The club’s very successful
Racketball ladder is now in full
swing as round 4 is currently
being played. Leading the way
is current Champion and number 1 Ger Foley who after an
earlier blip is outfoxing all pretenders to his crown. After 3
rounds the leaderboard reads
1) Ger Foley 12 pts, 2) Paddy
Walsh Snr 9 pts, 3) Michael
Walsh, Paddy Walsh jnr, Kevin
Tutty and Dave Power all tied
on 5 pts. Some early scores
from round four sees Ger keep
hid good form going as he has
defeated Paddy Walsh and
Kevin Tutty 2-0 while Kevin saw
off the challenge of Paddy 2-1.
It’s fantastic to see 2 former
under age Munster squash
players back on court in this
new code as Emmet Byrne and
Donnacha O’Dea make a welcome return.
I'm sure it won't be long
before they surge up the divisions and perhaps challenge
Gerry for the top spot. Emmet
had a fine 2-0 win over the very
fit Liam Waters, Eddie Dee had
a 2-0 win over Alan Manahan
and Joe Hart had a tough 2-1
win over Kyle Hackett a young
talented prospect who will be
hoping to emulate his grandfather Patsy on the Crystal
courts.
Back Lto R Alan Manahan, Liam Waters, Ray Moore (Dungarvan Credit
Union). Front Niall Fahey, Eddie Dee and Paddy Walsh.

WEST WATERFORD IN
TOP 10 OF IRELAND’S
HIDDEN GOLF
COURSES
An idyllic rural setting
makes West Waterford one
of the most peaceful courses
you’ll ever play. Those are
not my words but those of
Kevin Markham who has
published a book entitled
Hooked which he describes
as an amateur guide to the
golf courses of Ireland. Kevin
travelled the country to experience at first hand what the
courses had to offer. One
section deals with the top 10
hidden golf courses in which
West Waterford comes in at
number eight. Among his
comments on the course he
describes West Waterford as
having everything you expect
of a parkland: big trees,
slopes gentle hillsides,
doglegs, a river – but the
location, routing and variety
of holes gives it that something extra. Those of us who
know the course can appreciate the positive comments
made by Mr. Markham but if
you wish to enjoy the experience for yourself why not pay
us a visit. Only by doing so
can you appreciate what we
have to offer and experience
for yourself the renowned
West Waterford welcome.

WATERFORD WOMEN’S
LEAGUE
U14 Girls: Dungarvan 1;
Piltown 4
Piltown
leapfrogged
Dungarvan into second place
with a deserved win in Kilrush
on Saturday. It was the worst
first half performance by the
team since they came
together two and half seasons ago. Piltown went in at
half-time 3-0 and it looked like
the Blues might be overrun
after the break. But the girls
picked themselves up brilliantly and took the game to
the visitors throughout the
second half.
Emily had a close range
strike saved by the Piltown
goalkeeper early on and then
pulled one back soon after.
Piltown went further ahead in
the closing minutes but on the
second half performance the
girls will still be in with a good
chance in the away fixture.
SCHOOLBOY PLAYERS
PROFILES
an equaliser but then Railway
started to take control of the
game playing into the strong
wind and Jason O’Keeffe
scored what proved to be the
winner and our safe passage
into the next round.
KENNEDY CUP 2014
Tom Browne is back in
charge of the Waterford
Schoolboys Kennedy cup
squad for this season and we
would like to wish him and all
his backroom team the very
best for the season.
Hopefully, come June they
will be challenging for honours in Limerick.
UNDER 12
DEVELOPMENT SQUAD
Well done to Tireoghan
Flynn who has made the last
30 of the Waterford under 12
development squad. This
squad will be cut down to 18
next week and hopefully Tiger
will make that as he is a
player who has some great
talent and works hard at his
game.
FAI EMERGING TALENT
PROGRAMME
We have two lads on the
emerging talent programme
again this season. Andy
Molumby is part of the senior
squad and Jason Molumby is
part of the junior squad.
Both lads are fine players
and have been excellent all
season so far. We wish them
well for the remainder of the
programme.
ACADEMY ON
MONDAYS
On Monday evenings our
hugely
popular
soccer
Academy will continue in the

This Academy has been
going for many years and if
you look at our under 11 team
this season all have come
Kilmacthomas FC
DIVISION 3
Mooncoin ......................... 6;
Kilmac ................................ 1.
NOT the start we hoped for
but a brave effort was not
enough against the second
placed team. The boys continue to put in a good effort on
the pitch and are showing
very good commitment in
training.
DIVISION 2B
Tramore ............................. 0;
Kilmac ................................ 2.
A good start to the new
Year campaign and three
valuable point on the board
the lads were up for the game
and started in a good frame
of mind. David Power gave
us the lead with a powerful
shot after some good work in
midfield. We held the ball well
and tried to work openings
when ever we could. Our
defence were solid and dealt
with the Tramore attack with
ease. Our second goal came
from Martin Coffey who made
no mistake in front of goal.
Three valuable points as we
face a big test next weekend
when we take on leaders
Bolton.
NEW YEAR
GREETINGS
We wish all our supporters
well in the new Year and hope
it is a good one. Thanks to all
who support our weekly Lotto

JUNIORS BATTLE INTO
NEXT ROUND
Well credit is due to both
Railway and Kinsalebeg for
playing a fine game of soccer
last Sunday morning when
you take into consideration
the weather conditions. This
was the only game to survive
the weather last Sunday and
both teams battled it out for a
place in the next round of the
Ned Barry cup.
Railway were short a few
on Sunday but the lads dug in
and when Stephen Kennefick
scored with a great strike
after only ten minutes it was
the perfect start for us.
Playing with the strong wind
we struggled to get the ball
down and as a result didn't
add to our tally before the
break.
In the second half
Kinsalebeg threw everything
at us and were rewarded with
Helvick New Year’s Day Swim 2013 in Aid of Scoil Naisiunta Na Rinne. Pictured are Micheal Kiely
with Paudie and Aaron Crotty who participated.

through our Academy which
is what it really is all about.
We will again cater for
Boys/Girls aged from 4 to 9
and will start with 4/5/6 year
olds from 6 pm to 6.45 pm.
Then we will have 7/8/9
year olds from 6.45 to 7.30. It
costs only two euro per child
up to a max of 5 euro per
family of three or more.
MATCH SPONSORS
This season we are having
most games sponsored and
we would like to thank everyone who has agreed to sponsor games for us.
For a modest fee you can
have your name alongside
our weekly match reports and
we will try and give you as
much publicity during the
season as possible.
For more information on
this you can get in touch with
any of our club members.
There will be a meeting
this Friday night, January
17th at 7.30 pm sharp. It will
be preceded by a committee
meeting at 7.15 pm sharp in
Lawlors Hotel. A full attendance is requested for both
meetings please.
CHRISTMAS TO FORGET
Along with all the fixture
congestion comes the overload and weird results (at
times) over the Christmas
peroid. This season however
United had a run of results to
forget. In every match there
was an argument for getting
what our efforts deserved.
We cannot hide behind losing
Old Trafford, just not acceptable. Hopefully, now we can
go on a decent run following
the home victory over
Swansea. The one plus was
the goalscoring form of
Danny Welbeck who has got
6 in 8 games while carrying
the forwards efforts while
short the services of Rooney
and Van Persie.
TRANSFER
WINDOW
The Transfer Window
opened on January 1st and
as yet we have seen no activity. It is dangerous to press
the panic button as David
Moyes knows who he wants
unavailable in Janurary. This
is not to say we wouldn't and
more importantly couldn't do
with some new faces or a
return to full fitness of the
WHOLE squad. We wait with
anticipation of these possible
sceniaro's panning out.

Dungarvan RFC under 16s defeat
Waterpark
SF Dungarvan 24;
Waterpark 10
Neil Montgomery (2 tries)
plus conversions (2), Dan
O’Keeffe (try), Jamie McKelvie.
(Try).
Following the disappointment in losing a league final
before Christmas the squad
bounced back in the best possible fashion with a win over old
rivals Waterpark. Despite missing several key players we
showed great heart and determination. Playing with a strong
breeze we were only 5-5 at
half-time. Waterpark pressed
hard in the opening minutes of
the second half and a tough
second half looked likely.
However, our forwards
played with conviction and our
backs ran into both the opposition and a strong wind a driving
rain. We added 3 more tries
and only conceded one try.
This was testimony to the
determination and commitment
we spoke about as a squad in
an honest review of what happened in Clonmel. Redemption
was our goal and we certainly
started after Christmas with that
in mind. Further opportunity
presents itself in the coming
weeks. As runners-up in the
East Munster league we qualified for the pan-Munster competition after Christmas. We
play Old Crescent, Tralee and
Muskerry in 3 successive
weeks commencing with the
Limerick side at home in
Dungarvan RFC on Saturday
next. Kick-off is scheduled for
12.30 p.m. and all available
players are requested to be at
training on Wednesday as a
matter of priority. Supporters
welcome.
U-16s squad on the day:
Tony Collins, Eoin Bray, Jamie
McKelvie, Jack Mullany, James
Ali, Cathal Dee, l Breccan
Gibson, Ben Hitchman, Dan
O’Keeffe, Larry Brazel. Douglas
Petit, Conor Hayes, Pat
Connors, Nicky Connors,
Jordan Corby, Fionn Gibson –
Kiely and Neil Montgomery.
Our u-15s played Youghal u15s (plus a few u-16s) in a
friendly match last weekend.
When our strongest 15 were on
the park we actually drew 2
tries each with Youghal which
was an excellent result.
However when we put on out
our smaller and newer players
we conceded too much pace
and strength despite the best
efforts of the players concerned.
Youghal ran in several tries.
As it was the first outing this
year for the u-15s it was actually a good result. With a full
squad (we are still missing a
few players) there is no reason
not to believe that we would
beat the same Youghal team in
the future and we hope to get
an opportunity to do so. It was
also a good warm up for a forthcoming u-15 league match
against Fethard which we have
a real chance of winning. This
would place us in a 3rd place
play-off against a less strong
team from the Northern Region.
Again training for all u-14s
and u-15s Wednesday at 7 pm
and Saturday at 10.30 a.m. A
gentle reminder to all players
and parents to pay overdue
subs and training fees.

Ballinroad FC
BALLINROAD YOUTHS
BACK IN LEAGUE
ACTION AGAIN
BALLINROAD 4;
FERRYBANK B 1.
After a seven week lay-off,
Ballinroad Youths got back
into action again with a 4-1
win over a strong but young
Ferrybank team on Sunday.
The game was in doubt after
a morning of heavy rain, but
to the credit of the ground
staff, the pitch in Ballinroad
remained playable. The rain
passed just as the game
started and within twenty
minutes the pitch was dry and
provided a good surface for
the important league game.
Ferrybank’s position at the
bottom of the B Division does
no credit to the quality of the
team. Their results record
shows a series of narrow
defeats to the top teams and
in blustery conditions on
Sunday they demonstrated
that they are well capable of
putting it up to the opposition.
The game started with a
good sweeping passing
movement from Ballinroad
which
saw
Anthony
Fitzgerald, playing in the
unfamiliar position of centre
forward, put through on the
goalkeeper who came well off
his line to intercept him. In the
ensuing tangle between
Anthony, the goalkeeper and
several retreating defenders,
Anthony kept a cool head
and slotted the ball through a
narrow gap for Ballinroad’s
first goal, within two minutes
of the start. The game continued in that pattern.
After twenty minutes
James Kennedy got on the
end of another through ball
and put away the second for
Ballinroad. At that point the
Ballinroad team seemed to
adopt a view that this was
going to be easy and went
through a long period of
sloppy play with several players drifting out of position and
over-carrying the ball. They
paid the price for their lack of
discipline when they stupidly
conceded a free kick on the
edge of their box and then
failed to clear the ensuing
shot.
Ferrybank pounced on the
chance and put the ball low
beyond the diving Kamil
Smolorczyk in goals to give
Ferrybank a goal they
deserved.
A firm talking to at half time
delivered a better performance from Ballinroad in the
second half. The back line of
Conor McCarthy, Jamie
Joyce, Tadhg Prendergast
and Conor Brennan were in
complete control in the second half and Ferrybank’s
chances were reduced to two
long range shots which were
easily dealt with by the
keeper.
The midfield of David
Looby, Ciaran O’Neill, James
Kennedy and Diarmud
Curran moved the ball
around impressively and the
two forwards of Anthony
Fitzgerald and Tom Daly continually split the Ferrybank
defence.
The inevitable third goal
came after twenty minutes of
the second half when Jamie
Joyce cleanly met a James
Kennedy corner at the far
post and headed home.
The substitution of Micheal
O’Neill, making his appearance for the first time in
almost three months after a
groin strain, and the swapping of James Kennedy into
the forward line and Tom Daly
out to the wing position
created a more familiar and
threatening set-up. James
got
his
second
and
Ballinroad’s fourth goal
straight after the swap, again
latching on to another good
through ball and comfortably
finishing with his left foot past
the oncoming keeper.
Daniel Flynn came on for
Diarmuid Curran on the left
wing with twenty minutes to
go and within a few minutes,
following another good passing movement, got on the
end of a great Tom Daly cross
but his shot just skimmed
past the post.
While showing definite
signs of rustiness after the
long break, when Ballinroad
got into their familiar pattern
in the second half they looked
like league contenders.
Ferrybank gave them the
tough game they needed to
get back into form in a good
natured solid game in very
blustery conditions. The
points, at one stage looking
like they might slip away,
were warmly welcomed by
the Ballinroad lads at full time.

Cappoquin Snooker and Billiards Club
JACK McCARTHY
MEMORIAL BILLIARDS
The draw for this season’s
billiards tournament has
thrown up some exciting ties
with the pick probably being
the game between Martin
McCarthy
and
Darren
Mason. This should be a
cracking game with the winner playing John Walsh or
Michael Casey in the semifinal. The top half of the draw
will see David Mason play
John McGrath with the winner facing Killian O’Sullivan in
the quarter final.
The final tie sees Aaron
O’Sullivan play Martin Reddy
with the winner facing one of
David, John or Killian in the
semi final. Some good
games to be decided over the
next few weeks in what
should prove another exciting
competition especially with
the new rules in place this
season for Billiards.
AA FIRE SAFETY
SCRATCH CUP
The draw for our AA Fire
Safety scratch cup took place
this week with some mouth
watering ties down for decision. One of the ties worth the
watch will definitely be the
game between the O'Sullivan
brothers Aaron and Killian.
This should be a very close
tie with Killian probably the
favourite but Aaron will relish
a crack at the older brother
and it could be worth the
watch. The full draw is
Michael Casey v Martin
Reddy
Tommy O’Sullivan v Ben
O’Keeffe
Martin McCarthy v John
McGrath
Aaron O’Sullivan v Killian
O’Sullivan
Keith Mason v Keith
O’Sullivan
Brendan Walsh v Darren
Mason with one quarter-final
tie which will see John Walsh
v Alex Hennebry.
MARKET HOUSE LEAGUE
The semi-finals of the
Market House League will
see Darren Mason play
Brendan Walsh in the first
semi while Ben O’Keeffe will
face Keith O’Sullivan in the
other. With the handicap sys-
tem in play for the league this
should make for two very
close games. Darren will
fancy his chances against
Brendan but if he does give
Brendan any chances then
he will be punished as
Brendan is one of the top
players in the club when he is
in amongst the balls.
Ben will be fancied to beat
Keith in the second semi-final
but Keith will not go down
easily and will battle to the
end. If Keith does win this
semi final it wont be too much
of a surprise as again he can
score well if he gets any
chances. Two games that will
be well worth the watch.

and will take part in a 10 day
training camp in the Sports
Centre.
On Sunday, the 26th the
Russian’s will be joined by the
Irish National Team who will
also take part in the training
camp.
The Irish Team will be the
Champions from the National
Finals which are on Friday
the 24th January in the
National Stadium.
The Russian Team will
return home on the 5th
February and the Irish team
will take part in a training
camp in Russia from the 19th
to the 24th February.
These training camps are
preparation for the World
Youth Championships in
Bulgaria in April.
There will be two TEST
MATCHES which will be
open to the public; the first is
on Thursday the 30th
January and Tuesday the 4th
February at 7 p.m.
This will be a great opportunity to see the best boxing
team in the World in action
against the best of the Irish.
The Russian Team
enjoyed their stay in
Dungarvan last year and they
requested to come back
here, they were offered other
locations but they chose
Dungarvan. The location of
Lawlors Hotel was ideal as it
was close to the Sports
Centre and the old railway
track in Abbeyside was excellent for jogging and outdoor
training.
The hospitality shown to
them by the Town Council,
the people of Dungarvan and
the local boxing Club was
much appreciated by the
BOXING FEDERATION OF
RUSSIA.
A letter of thanks was sent
to the Town Council.

Dungarvan Rugby Club Kilmacthomas trained horse wins
UNDER 18
Fethard 0; Dungarvan 7
For the second week in a
row we were away from
home in the under 18
Development League when
we travelled to Fethard last
Sunday. We already played
Fethard in the League at
home in November which
Fethard won by a single point
with the conversion of a last
minute penalty. It was the
second game on the Fethard
pitch that morning and with
heavy rain before and during
the game the pitch was just
about playable. Due to two
players picking up knocks at
Saturday training run by
Munster Coach John O’Neill
we again started this game
with 15 players.
Within a minute our numbers were reduced to 14
when one of our centres had
to come off when he picked
up a knock on the knee and
was unable to continue. It
was necessary to move one
of our second row players
into the centre and play with
7 forward in the scrum and
line-out for the rest of the
game.
We were playing into a
strong breeze and it was
impossible to get out of our
own half. There were only
two occasions when we got
into the opposition half. Time
and time again Fethard were
nearly over our try line only
for our defence to hold the
line intact.
Players put in tackle after
tackle over and back the field
to keep our line intact at halftime. It was great to see how
disciplined and organised our
defence was, keeping a
great flat line and when
Fethard tried to use the overlap and extra man we somehow got cover and the attacking player was driven into
touch.
At half-time we knew we
had a chance at 0-0 as we
would have the elements with
us in the second half.
The second half was
similar to the first but it was
Fethard who had to defend.
Time and time they kept
Dungarvan from crossing the
line. The pitch at this stage
was a mud bath and it was
getting hard for the players to
keep their feet. The ball was
covered in muck and hard to
hold especially with hands
that were muddy and cold.
Any ball kicked out of defence
by Fethard was swallowed up
by our full back who carried
back at the defence with
great support from backs and
forwards.
The pressure eventually
paid off and after we had
been stopped on numerous
occasions, we kept recycling
and a couple of great passes
put our out-half in to the left of
the posts.
The kick was converted
and we were seven points to
the good with 20 minutes left
to play. Fethard to their credit
tried with all their might to get
back into the game but great
defending and worsening
conditions kept them scoreless to the end.
Great credit to the two
teams who served up a great
game in the conditions but
especially to Dungarvan who
had to play 58 minutes with
only 14 players.
This was a fabulous team
performance and any one of
our 14 players could have
been man of the match.
Training with the senior
panel is at 7.30 pm on
Tuesday and Saturday morning at 10.30
Team: Patrick O’Dwyer, Jack
Hurley, Stephen Keating, Darach
Ó Cathasaigh, Simon Lawrence,

MUNSTER COACHING
John O’Neill a coach with
Munster Rugby came last
Saturday morning to coach
our under 16 and 18 teams
between 10.30 and 12.00 in
what turned out to be a very
informative training session
for our younger teams.
He will also be coming
again to help coach the other
age groups.
Kilmacthomas Badminton Club
KNOCK-OUT CUP
Three of our four teams
have now been in action in
the Knock-Out Cup competitions with Kilmac 2 and
Kilmac 4 playing their opening games last week. The
Kilmac 2 team of Thorsten
Konekamp,
Jason
Kavanagh, Ian Kearney,
Fiona Kiely, Natalie Brown
and Rachel Walsh traveled to
Dunmore to take on
Dunmore 2. The team knew
a tough task lay ahead playing in Dunmore. Jason and
Thorsten got the team off to a
winning start with a straight
sets win in the opening game.
Fiona and Natalie follow on in
similar fashion with a win in
first ladies. Thorsten and Ian
made it 3-0 to Kilmac, with
Fiona and Rachel making it
4-0. The mixed games
proved to be the most exciting of the night, with both
games going to three sets.
Jason and Natalie got off to a
good start winning the opening set, but had to fight hard
to in the third set to ensure
victory. The final game saw
Ian and Rachel play together.
The pair had a tough battle
on their hands losing the first
set, but fought back very well
to claim the final two sets and
give the team an impressive
6-0 victory on the night. The
home leg of the match takes
place
in
Kilmac
on
Wednesday, 15th January at
8 p.m.
Kilmac 4 played their
opening game at home
against Ballyduff 2 on Friday
night last. The team started
very well winning the opening
three games, with Bryan
Kavanagh and Michael
Brown winning first mens
doubles. Bridget Walsh and
Edel Firth followed this with a
win in first ladies doubles.
Brian got his second win of
the night when he partnered
Padraig Lenane in second
mens doubles.
Unfortunately Bridget and
Niamh Flavin did not have
such luck in their ladies doubles with the Ballyduff team
claiming their first point. It was
one game each in the mixed
with Michael and Edel unfortunately losing out, but
Padraig and Niamh managed
to have an impressive win in
their mixed game. This gives
the Kilmac team a 4-2 lead
ahead of their away fixture in
Ballyduff on Wednesday next
at 8 p.m.
Team: Bryan Kavanagh,
Michael Brown, Padraig
Lenane, Bridget Walsh, Edel
Firth and Niamh Flavin.
JUVENILE COUNTY
CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Saturday last January
11th the Under 13 and Under
17 County championships
were held in Kilmac. Our only
representative in the U-17
competition was Irinel Lineen.
He competed in both the singles and doubles, and had
some good performances in
both. There was a large club
entry in the U-13 competition.
In total we had ten boys and
four girls competing. All our
players put in a great effort
throughout the day, and in the
plate singles we saw two all
Kilmac finals, with Aoife
Scurry and Mide Delaney fac-
ing each other in the final.
Mide was victorious on this
occasion. In the boys plate
final. Daniel Delaney and
Sean Walsh faced each
other. After a very good
game, it was Daniel who
emerged victorious. Well
done to everyone who took
part and to those who helped
organise the competition on
the day.
Our competitors were:
Alan
Mulcahy,
Louis
Gallagher, Jack Wickham,
Cormac McCarthy, Dermot
Behan, Marty Morrissey,
Sean Walsh, Pa Skehan,
Daniel Delaney, Declan
Keane, Eve Halley, Tao
Behan, Aoife Scurry and
Mide Delaney.

Open lightweight race at Tinahely
By Dick White

WHAT
a
day!
Congratulations
to
the
Shillelagh and District Hunt
for their trojan work in staging
the first point to point of 2014
in the Eastern Region. With
conditions pretty atrocious as
had been promised by Met
Eireann they managed to
deliver a seven race card on
the day.
The entry level at 101 had
clearly suggested that few if
any divides would be required
but with a near 75% declaration rate overall the 7 year old
and older maiden was
divided giving us our seven
races. Despite the heavy rain
the track stood up the racing
pretty well with most horses
able to get through it easily
enough.
Given the weather and the
attraction of staying indoors
the attendance was a little
sparse, but hey that was their
loss!!
The racing highlight was
the Slaney Foods sponsored
Open Lightweight where 7 of
the original entry were
declared.
With
neither
Nedzers Return nor The Last
Derby racing the warm order
on the day was the County
Waterford trained Boxing
Along. This former track winner notched his sixth win
between the flags here after
leading all of the way.
Ridden by Paul Power and
trained by Vincent Halley in
Kilmacthomas,
County
Waterford the Witness Box
10 year old was very impressive here. Speaking afterwards his winning trainer
stated "Yes he did that well,
he was fresh here today and
jumped well. He had a little
cut and didn't race since mid
December, but the break
seemed to do him good."
Halley who trains the horse
for his father Laurence indicated afterwards that the winner would go to Thurles next
for a Hunters Chase at the
end of the month. This puts
Halley level with David
Christie in the National
Trainers championship and
he might well have more winners to come!
Power is an important part
of the Halley operation at
present with the 26 year old
riding out 2 days a week at
the yard. With 16 track winners and just 50 point to
pointer winners to his name
the Waterford City based
Power is an accomplished
amateur jockey.
His career has seen him
qualify as a Quantity
Surveyor but it is to racing
and the horse industry that he
is now focussed. In addition
to working for Halley, Power
also rides out 3 days per
week
for
Henry
De
Bromhead’s
County
Waterford yard and he also
works for Kieran Purcell at his
County Kilkenny base.
14 of the original entry of
16 horses faced the starter in
the
ultra
competitive
Woodenbridge Hotel Winners
of One contest with the market leader Venitien De Mai
maintaining his unbeaten
record here.
Owned by Alan Potts of
Sizing Europe fame and
trained by the legendary Jim
Dreaper, the French bred 5
year old son of Network was
always prominent under a
good ride by Jamie Flynn to
win from Bally Beaufort.
Dreapers son Tom indicated
afterwards "That was perfect,
he looks like a fair horse, we
will stay point-to-pointing and
go hunter chasing with him,
as we did with Gooyella"
Racing opened with Jamie
Codd cementing his lead in
the jockeys championship
when winning the Casey
Enterprises 5 and 6 year old
mares maiden. Here the
Mayglass, County Wexford
man won on Scarlet Feather
for County Westmeath based
William Ross.
Owned and bred by
Salome Brennan who is a
long time patron of the Ross
yard, plans for the 6 year old
Flemensfirth mare "could see
her return to the track but she
would prefer a bit of better
ground" according to her
trainer. The horses went a
good gallop in this race but a
tightly bunched pack were still
in contention 3 fences from
home with Codd asserting to
win.
Brightwells
Bloodstock
sponsored the 5 year old
geldings maiden and this
went to the Steven Clements
ridden Blacklion for Colin
Vincent Halley and Paul Power after winning the Tinahely Open.
McKeever
and
WW
Dennison. This Kayf Tara
horse had the form of the
race with a nice third at
Lingstown on his last start.
McKeever commented: “He
has had two good solid runs,
he scoped bad the last day
and it was treated. He is a different horse now, but the
ground was a bit soft and he
will go to the sales.”
Noel Dooly is a Co.
Waterford man that has
moved to Courtnacuddy in
Co. Wexford where he now
trains a string of 15 horses
which includes 2 point-topointers. Dooly and a large
welcoming party were on
hand to welcome Grand Isola
back after winning the Central
House sponsored 6 year old
geldings maiden in the hands
of Patrick O'Sullivan.
O'Sullivan a 21 year old
had been a conditional jockey
on the track but reverted back
to the amateur ranks and the
Kerry native now based in
County Wexford is hopeful of
riding further winners following this first winner of the season.
The Older horses maiden
was divided with the
AgriMaster Farm Insurance
seeing J. J. Slevin take the
first divide on Amithereyet for
his father Shay and his
mother Liz.
This race saw Slevin bide
his time as Harley Dunne set
a scorching pace on Gray
Mick. This horse couldn't
keep the gallop up in these
conditions and had been
passed before falling at the
last. Slevin came home a distance clear on the 7 year old
son of Saffron Walden of the
second with Shay Slevin
commenting "The famine is
over, we will go for a winners
next. He ran well here a year
ago and he cant have it too
soft".
Michael McConville was
beaming from ear to ear after
winning the last race of the
day, the second divide of the
Older horses maiden on his
own horse Kerrib Castle.
One of only 4 horses
trained by his father Stephen
at their Portadown, County
Armagh base the winning
jockey was recording his fifth
career win on the 8 year old
Winged Love gelding. With a
second placed effort in a
Hunters
Chase
at
Downpatrick to his credit he
was the stand out choice in
the race and so it proved.
The
25
year
old
McConville works full time in
the family’s construction business but he hopes to stay
point-to-pointing and try
another Hunters Chase with
this horse.
