and head off to an event a local – or
better still, a not so local - group
has organised for us. Over the past
months I’ve been on a couple of trips
into the outside world with some of
these groups: The Bath Tub Clubs
Raid Imber and The Wye Knot’s Bob
Longworth Memorial Run to Goodrich Castle.
Honestly is there really anything as much fun
as being in the middle of a long line of 2CVs
on the open road? There was also an informal
gathering of 2CV friends at Ron Hiron’s funeral
in Redditch – a sad yet utterly uplifting occasion
where Ron got the sending off he would’ve
loved with an honour guard of 5 2CVs and a lot
of friends. I know that many readers of 2cvGB
News will never go to an event, whether it’s a
pub night, a scenic drive out or a big meeting in
a field. And that is absolutely fine and dandy - I
love to read about the history of London but I
have no desire to catch
the plague! The magazine
is here for you and always
will be, but should you
look through the events
list and there is an event
happen near you, I beg
you to consider even the
2cvGB News
Tailor your classic car policy to suit your needs.
oohoo! It’s Springtime and
W
that means for many of us
it’s time to hit the Queen’s highway
tiniest possibility of joining in. Look - I know
that many of us are British and that that the
idea of talking to people we’ve never met before
is about the scariest thing we can imagine but
really, it’s really not that bad! Sure, there will a
bit of awkward eye contact and a few mumbled
clichés like “You found us okay then?” but get
through that and I guarantee you will have
a blast. Do you worry they’ll be a bit weird?
Of course they will be – they drive 2CVs just
like you! Will they be friendly? Yes, very, and
genuinely pleased to make you and your car’s
acquaintance. Do you worry your car will be
looked down on because its either too shiny
or not shiny enough? Trust me, that’s not even
an issue. Are you worried about bloodletting
rituals for newbies? Don’t be –it’s quite rare
these days unless there are some Amis present.
Go on – you know you want to! And look – I’ve
added writing credits!

2016 NATIONAL MEETING T-SHIRTS
Featuring a 2CV against
Chichester Harbour’s shoreline with a basket of apples
and Chichester Cathedral in
the background, the design
for our T-shirts has been
produced exclusively for our
event by local artist Silke
Benning who some of you
will have met at Southern
club events in recent years.
It is printed in brown on a
high-quality sand-coloured
cotton shirt and is available
in 5 different men’s, ladies
and children’s sizes.
Having given up a Fine Arts course to
look after her daughter Sinead following
a brain tumour operation, Silke was keen
to use her art to raise money for the Brain
Tumour Charity and what better way than
by designing our logo, which will feature
not only on the T-shirts but also on stickers
(sponsored by Jeff & Chris at 2CV Graphics)
and rally plaques (sponsored by the 2CV

cars. SPOG,
having previously remanufactured
Dyane rear inner wings and pre/
post 1976 rear valances, can now
offer a complete royal flush with all
the necessary body panels required
to rebuild the back end of this A
Series icon. As you can see from
the accompanying pictures, a new
floor panel has been produced being
a direct copy of a Citroen original
example. With SPOG’s Dyane boot
floor panel all the strengthening
ripples are correctly positioned along
with the stiffening strip underneath.
Likewise, all the drainage holes and
fixing points have been accurately
reproduced. Similarly, the “ears”
in the two rear corners are in place
thereby negating the need for the
restorer to fabricate any form of patch.
However, to do all this I must firstly
thank and congratulate Members
of 2cvGB who, in earlier times, had
the foresight to acquire, Waxoyl and
store many Citroen original panels.
These wondrous items were initially

stored in various wooden lockups before being
moved to the shelves of the Ruskington Unit
during the build-up to our own World Meeting
at Kelso in 2005. In truth many of SPOG’s
current projects (this Dyane boot floor panel
in particular) would never have happened if it
wasn’t for such diligent squirrel behaviour. Well
done to all involved at that time. Therefore,
SPOG can now be a major player in Dyane
restoration in line with other marques as seen
recently on show at NEC Restoration Show in
Birmingham. And we have many other Citroen
original panels (yes, 2cv/van/Ami examples
too) in Ruskington for similar consideration at
a later date if so desired. Next I have to thank
all the 2cvGB Members who have invested in
SPOG by purchasing discount units since its
inauguration in 1994. Without such financial
support none of this would have been possible
either. Indeed, more of you seem to appreciate
what we are doing as the number of Application
Forms to join the SPOG scheme seems to be
ever growing. Again well done. Finally, though,
returning to SPOG’s new Dyane boot floor
panel, this will be priced for normal 2cvGB
Members at £168.00 including VAT. And, as
per usual, full SPOG discount terms apply if
you have bought into this vision of our future.
Only a short SPOG Article this month but Oh!
So sweet!

equipment from Ruskington, which meant
a quick dash up the A46 and a crash course
on how it all fits together (should have paid
more attention Mark). Sorted it. Friday
morning - set up day, arrived bright and
early at NEC after the usual formalities into
hall 7 and attempted to erect the backing
display. Fortunately, Mark, in his AK350,
turned up and between us got it sorted. All
cars, bar Ben’s from Penzance, were in by
12’oclock and looked just the part. Must
make a mention of the heroic dedication
of the Spog man David Eden, who despite
the Snow ‘up North’, during the night
drove down to the NEC for 10’oclock to
deliver the Spog parts for display on the
stand, including the newly manufactured
Dyane 6 boot floor, literally hot off the
press the night before. Well done David.
Over Saturday & Sunday the stand was well
attended by the general public and favourable
comments were heard by all. Many thanks
to all who helped man the stand over the
weekend and helped with the dismantling at
the end of the show – very much appreciated
by myself. Next up - la Vie en Bleu and the
classic car show in November.

That’s it for this month. Drive on the right!

36 years old (this October),
one owner from new...
owards the end of 1979, and after much
T
research and consideration, I purchased
a new Citroen Visa flat twin. Although very
suitable in most respects, it soon became
apparent that the vehicle had a major
manufacturing defect in the construction of
the body shell. Over the following ten months
the car was returned to the dealer on three
occasions, a different dealership on a further
three occasions and finally to Citroen U.K.’s
main centre at Slough on three more occasions.
Altogether there were nine failed attempts to
have the defect corrected. As a result of this
prolonged and distressing experience, I finally
came to the conclusion that were a similar
problem to be encountered with an ‘A series’
Citroen, it would surely be easier to identify
the cause and correct the fault, the car being of
bolt-together construction. The Visa was traded
in for the Dyane. Bought new on October 23rd
1980, this excellent, versatile vehicle is still in

‘daily use’ today. It is on its fourth time ‘round
the clock’, and has never been ‘done up,’ I have
just done my best to look after it. This Citroen
is a great joy to drive and continues to provide
both very practical utility, and much pleasure,
several decades after that critical decision was
taken all those years ago.
I enclose two photos, one shows the Dyane
taken last year at home, the other picture shows
the car touring Dorset in 2011.

Twelve Months in Plastic

Marmite quality due to the very things
which single out the experience of driving
it. If the 2CV can be recognised as a
24 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
Marmite car of the motoring world then I
would argue that the Mehari is the Marmite
car of the 2CV community. Having said
that, after twelve months of ownership I
am still a fan. Yes it is slow, slower than
any other 602 A-series I have owned, but
it is distinctive and a plastic fantastic Lego
like barrel of fun. I deliberately avoided the
word awesome there. (Well done! Ed)
Some say they are uncomfortable, but
the two longest journeys I have done in
the Mehari so far, one from Nottingham to
Swansea the day I picked it up in rain and
wind and other being to and from registers
day last year have, in my case, not caused
www.2cvgb.co.uk | APRIL 2016 | 2CVGB News | 25
this problem. We will see if a trip to the
German National later in the year changes
my mind.
Yes it leaks (how would I know it was an
A series if it didn’t leak?) but this problem is
solved by taking the doors off. Even in the
rain I take the doors off, the open feeling
seems to suit the character of the car so
well. In this situation you only notice the
water ingress when the wind blows from the
side. Around town or driving over mountain
roads it is as competent as any other car and
it attracts smiles.
There are some standard remarks which
I was warned to expect when I bought it.
“Did you make it yourself?” was the first
to arrive, “nice Mini Moke” is another, far
more frequent one. Have you compared the
look of a Moke to a Mehari? One Saturday
26 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
afternoon, sat at traffic lights outside
one of Swansea’s more alternative music
hostelries a gentleman left the beer garden
to stick his head through the doorless
aperture blocking my view of the traffic
lights to deliver the Moke remark. This
is the only time that being a left hooker
has proved to be a disadvantage, but he
did exit car quite quickly when I began to
move off.
So there we have it, I wanted one, took
the plunge even though many people
advised me not to and I am happy to
have done so. After all, to paraphrase Ian
Fleming, you only live twice, once when
you are born and once when you have to
complete an emergency stop in a drum
brake Mehari.

Bit of a delay
Being fortunate to own a DS, as
well as 2CV I get lots of reading
material through the post each
month. In the January edition
of the “Citroenian”, Nigel wild
published an article on fitting a
delay timer to a DS, as suggested by
Chris Wilson. I decided this was a
good idea and would also benefit
Dolly. The kit comes from Maplins
(Maplin code K2599, £12.99),
you can assemble it yourself with
a small soldering iron in around
half an hour, the instructions are
precise and, if followed carefully,
can provide hours of simple
amusement waiting for the timer to
operate. I chose to fit the unit in a
multipurpose plastic box (also from
Maplins, don’t forget to buy a radio

“piggyback” crimped terminals
and straight male or female

the black wire to the + terminal on the unit

from the blue wire on the switch to A on the

the white wire and take it through terminals

So there you are, happily waiting for drizzle

Fellow members. You are all aware of what
I have created over the years of which some
still have to appear in the mag. I am having
the last one done now The Citrus Opel WW
2 German staff car. I have a lot of parts and
complete vehicles left over. The vehicles are:
a rough complete 1972 Dyane, a 1980 Dyane
all there on a new galvanised chassis, a front
portion from B pillar forward with all bits to
make a pickup, the remains of the 1968 Ami
break with everything except the rolling chassis
which is for my last project. I also a lot of Dyane
sheet metal. If you’re interested email me on

In response...
Firstly, welcome Tony. It’s an excellent
publication and I wish you every success in
your role. Further to my letter, reproduced on
p20 of the February issue of this fine magazine,
re. “fitting larger oil filters to assist with engine
cooling” on A-Series vehicles, and David’s
response in March. Firstly, I sincerely apologise
for any offence given or implied - that was not
at all my intent. David asks “Are such views
based on experience, scientific data or simply
a matter of opinion?” It should not matter, as
any aspect of that presented should stand on
its own (Engineering) merit &/or historical
fact. But anyway. I do have a degree in Design
(Engineering) - Birmingham., and worked
in the automotive industry for sixteen years,
where I was instrument in the design, build &
development of prototypes. For twelve of those
years; my focus was on the A-series Citroens.
c.1981 I drove my Bamboo 2CV to Vienna and
then back over the Swiss Alps. Subsequently
in my A-series kit-car I’ve been across France
& Spain to the world meeting in Portugal, and
similarly through France & Germany to the
Octoberfest in Munich. Whilst ‘in the vicinity’
we took in a spaghetti, cappuccino coffee, and
Italian ice cream ..just over the Alpine border.
Amongst other things, I’ve built & driven
A-series cars with & without cooling fan &
ducts, converted 602cc to 650, tried twin
carburettors & a lightened flywheel, electronic
ignition systems, and nitro-injection. I’d also
‘enjoy’ my cars on ‘Track Days’ at Mallory Park
and Castle Donnington, never needing to use a
car trailer to attend. Subsequently, I ran a classic
car restoration workshop, before moving my
career over to marine. My own expertise was in
yacht layouts and their systems (30ft - 215ft). I
worked in the UK and abroad. I started off as a
trainee draughtsman and worked up to Head
of Design. I semi-retired a few years ago to
professionally restore post-war Sunbeam m/c’s. I
am now early-retired. But yes, what I wrote is just
an opinion. Re-reading the aforementioned letter
afresh I see nothing but my grammar needing
amendment. I would however add a reminder to
30 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
owners that; below 10deg C. (i.e., when you can
see your breath) then Citroen recommend you
fit the muff over the air intake grille. I might also
add that I have just bought an oil-filter adapter
from Chevronics for my recently acquired
Ami-super. However, this is not to increase
the filter’s capacity. It was done only because
the non-draining filters for the 1970’s 1015cc
have become less convenient to source. So, I’m
changing to an oil filter used on later Citroens.
On a final note. David’s response quotes “a
slappy tappet is a happy tappet”, and “I always
set the tappet clearance significantly wider than
the manual advises”. I’ll not say any more than to
note: this retards the opening of your valves and
shortens the time they are open. I offer a hand of
friendship to David. Best regards,

L’amour

’m sure you are all familiar with the
IBriggs’
wonderful film adaptation of Raymond
‘The Snowman’, where a little boy
builds a snowman which comes to life.
He looks nervously out of the window to
check if he is for real and still actually
there... ‘What has any of this got to do with
2cvs?’ I hear you ask. Well, nothing really,
except I am now that boy looking out of
the window; only my object of admiration
is not a snowman, but my beautiful, fully
restored 2cv Special - of which more anon.
Where did this love affair start? Well, for
me, I need to go back to 1968 (yes, some
of us are that old)! My ‘other half ’ (three
years later to be my wife) had gone to Paris
to study French at the Universite (part of
the Sorbonne). So I thought, ‘what more
excuse did I need to go over there?’ I mean,
Paris!! Her studies were cut short by the
student riots that year, which I missed as,
by then I had returned to Blighty. This was
the first time I had left English soil, and
I immediately fell for everything French:
the wine, the food, Gauloises! (thankfully
relinquished many years ago) and,
naturellement, le Deux Chevaux! I soon
realised that, back on English soil that, if
I was to cut it as an ultra-cool Francophile
and aficionado of ‘la nouvelle vague’ of
French cinema, I desperately needed a 2cv,
if only to rest my ‘smoking arm’ on the
open window, whilst driving/changing gear
etc. with the other! So that’s when it all
started; my love of the tin snail: the iconic
design, the simplicity, the practicality, the
quirkiness, the bounciness, just the sheer
‘Frenchness’ etc. Since then, I’ve had a few:
a green Dyane, a yellow/black Charleston
(how I wish I’d kept that one), a red one, a
maroon/black Charleston (how I wish I’d
kept that one) and then in 2007, I bought
F300 GND. It was a Special, but not that
special! There always seemed to be things
www.2cvgb.co.uk | APRIL 2016 | 2CVGB News | 31
wrong with most of the
cars I’ve had and, not
being that mechanically
minded (yes, I know,
perhaps unusual these
days to own a 2cv and
not be continually
rebuilding engines), I
relied on friendly garage
men to put things right. Well, they may
have been friendly, but how much did they
know about 2cvs? Sadly, not a lot, in many
cases. But, I soldiered on with aforesaid car,
having managed to find a half-decent garage
in this neck of the woods - literally - the
beautiful Forest of Dean. However, even to
my untrained eye, it was becoming apparent
that the tin worm had started to eat its way
through various tasty bits of bodywork
(the chassis, fortunately was galvanised),
and I thought “do I just let it continue to
feast on my pride and joy, or shall I attempt
to kill it whilst the going’s good?” And it
was at that point, by sheer good fortune, I
discovered that a certain Pete Sparrow had
up-sticked from Wokingham, and downsticked to Hereford. Fantastique - an expert
virtually on my door-step! So I decided
to take the bull by the horns, and sign
over my trusty steed to him. Anyway, to
cut a long story short (which I am clearly
not doing), a familiar scenario started to
take shape. What initially, seemed like a
relatively quick ‘in-out’ job, turned out to
be, shall we say, somewhat longer! It was
obvious, on dismantling, that the tin worm
had had a more voracious appetite than
was first realised – lots of panels needed
replacing and even more welding needed
32 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
doing. Then there was the
decision regarding pretreatment. It could have
gone to be shot-blasted (the
less expensive option) but,
as we all know, 2cvs are not
made with the thickest of
metals, and Pete thought
this might be too invasive.
So the old axiom ‘if a job’s worth doing, it’s
worth doing well’ came to the fore, and I
decided to have the whole thing chemically
stripped and epoxy coated, which involved
(apart from quite a few extra pennies!),
a few early morning starts for Pete up to
Nottingham and back! Whilst all this was
going on, I was prevaricating over the final
colour; changing my mind several times,
before fixing on ‘Bleu Cyclades’ (1966-68)
for the body, and Blanc Meije for wheels/
bumpers etc. I had already ordered a navy
hood from Matt Damper, and then I saw a
picture of his seat covers.........well, it had to
be white with navy piping. And they look
fabulous - very retro! The body-shop just
down the road from Pete, did an absolutely
superb job on the paint-work, so that,
combined with Pete’s meticulous attention
to detail and dedication, means I now
have a car that might out-last me, and to a
standard that even Andre Citroen, were he
to come back from the dead, might exclaim
‘incroyable’! Ok, it’s taken not far short of
2 years to complete, and I’ll have spent the
kids’ inheritance - was it worth it? Is the
Pope a Catholic? After all, you are only old
once, and I can now start my love affair
all over again! Post-script. On the subject
of 2cvs in films, I see Mike Good has
compiled another
list, in addition
to Kat Parkins.
Could I add my
pennyworth, and
ask if anyone
out there is into
world cinema and,
more specifically
a propos 2cvs,
French cinema?
If you need to see
2cvs in films, look
no further than
numerous French
films from the
‘60s and ‘70s. I
would specifically
mention ‘Le Boucher’ by Claude Chabrol,
featuring the wonderful Stephane Audran.
An early ‘suicide door’ 2cv features
prominently,
especially towards
the latter part of the
film - great stuff!
Editor’s note: I
have seen this
beautifully tasteful
and thoughtfully
realised car at
close quarters.
If anyone ever
has to ask where
the money goes
on a properly
painstaking
professional build,
then you would
only have to look at the attention to
detail on Stuart’s car….

The 2CV in
Papercraft
M
by Antonio de Fred
y wife informs me that paper cutting
is the new découpage (something that
only Kirsty Allsop truly understands...) so
I was delighted to discover a book which
might combine our interests and enable us to
spend cosy evenings around the kitchen table
hacking pieces of paper about. That book is
‘The Citroën 2CV in Papercraft’ by Antonio
de Fred. Many people will be aware that
for some time now cut out 2CVs have been
available to download on www.brusino.com
and this book is simply a collection of those
34 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
cut outs bound together in book form (you
remember books - they were what people
used in the olden days before Google) which
is especially handy if your printer has been
jammed up with jelly Peppa Pigs and hair
bobbles. The book contains 15 2CVs of all
shapes & sizes including an early prototype,
Dyane, Mehari, Ami6, AK, Dolly, Charleston
and an imaginary future 2CV. They
appear to me to be very accurately drawn
representations (but I’m sure the ripple
counters will probably disagree...) of very
simple, yet charming,
construction. From my
experience in building
the downloaded
versions, they are quite
fiddly to cut out and
glue so maybe before
cutting the book up you
might want to practice
your scissor skills! I
must confess to being
slightly disappointed
by the relatively flimsy
paper it is printed on - a
slightly heavier paper
or card would make
the finished models
feel more substantial
but the reproduction is
excellent and it even has
full instructions! This
book comes with a brief
potted history of the
2CV and a fascinating
and very useful paint
chart, listing 104 of
the colours used on
production cars and
detailing their paint
codes, models they
were used on and what
years they appeared.
Almost worth the price
of the book alone is the
knowledge that AC308
Jaune Dore was only
used on 1975 model
2CVs. The book is
published by Amazon
and is available online
for somewhere between
a fiver and a tenner. So
have we enjoyed those
cosy evenings bonding
“This book comes with a

over pva glue and
scalpels? No! I didn’t
realise that my wife
sees paper cutting as
a competitive contact
sport. This is not
really a good thing
where sharp blades
are involved so I
refuse to get involved
unless she promises
to play nicely. And
anyway, do I really
want to cut up a
brand new book?

everything from the camouflaged Dyane of
Ian Seabrook to Stuart Smith’s ‘fresh out of

infamous Sparrow 2CV/BMW hybrid to a brace
of Ami 6s in between. Wonderful stuff! In fact,
one local saw a few more 2CVs than he was
perhaps prepared for as, after wringing every
last horsepower from his Passat to overtake the
3 2CVs he could see ahead of him, he rounded
the corner to find another 10 of them all wafting
serenely along like a family of ducks out for an
afternoon swim! No, don’t laugh. He didn’t.
After the excitement of the drive in, everyone
was more than happy to decant to the excellent
café for coffee, cake and conversation. Lots of
conversation. So much of it, in fact, that I’m not
sure anyone actually got as far as visiting the
castle! After drinking the café dry (of soup) it
was time to move on like locusts to the nearby
Inn on the Wye for the odd shandy and mango
juice and, although sadly I wasn’t able to go
along, I’m sure a jolly time was had by all. All in
all, a grand day out.

We got the taste for concrete camping when

a couple of weekends away in Scotland. You
need to be warm and dry in winter, don’t
you? (Well I do). Because of the Scottish
success, Liz & Jim Rogers decided to test the

a big thank you, to Liz & Jim for organising
40 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
a superb hotel weekend at Portinscale near
Keswick, Lake district. The hotel coped
remarkably well, considering the invasion
of 2CVs, and the fact that, due to being near
lake Derwentwater, the lake had come to
visit the hotel in late December. All around
the lakes there are signs of flood damage,
the A591 from Windermere to Keswick will
be closed for quite some time as some fool
took down the trees, and now the river has
gone back where it used to live. Undaunted,
Liz & Jim quickly re-arranged our routes,
and took us across some spectacular scenery
over the Honister pass into Cockermouth.
On Sunday it was another spectacular
jaunt over Kirkstone Pass with a stop at
the top for coffee, then on to the Lakeland
motor museum, superb displays of Donald
Campbell’s Bluebird legacy and several
Citroens. Then would you believe it ?? the
shortest way to the hotel was back over
Kirkstone pass again. I don’t think I have
used second gear as much since we bought
the car. All in all, a brilliant weekend, with
even a village pub to escape the hotel. There
was a raffle to raise funds for the flood relief,
I’m not sure of the amount but I’m told the
government will match it, topped up with a
bit more when Jim got out his squeeze box
and begging bowl. Kind Regards (And carry
on camping, if you must)
Chris Bryant
(Actually, I’m not so keen on camping either,
Chris. It’s only the lure of the smell of frying
bacon wafting through canvas that’ll get me in
a tent at all. Editor)

EVENT REVIEW
Auld
Alliance
2cv Ecosse
rugby run Edinburgh
his is the third time this event has taken
T
place and it centres on the 6 Nations Rugby
Match between Scotland and France when it
takes place at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. The
idea was dreamed up by James Storrar as a way
of welcoming the French rugby fans when they
came to Scotland for the match. A convoy of
2CVs would tour Edinburgh’s city streets before
the match and park in the Murrayfield car park
thus giving the visitors a wee reminder of home.
The plan was to make up any French loss on
the field of play with this warm reminder of
our traditional everlasting friendship. Dating
back to 1295, the Auld Alliance was built
upon Scotland and France’s shared interests
in controlling England’s aggressive expansion
plans. Drawn up by John Balliol of Scotland and
Philip IV of France, it was first and foremost a
military and diplomatic alliance, but for most
ordinary Scots it brought more obvious benefits
through jobs as mercenaries in France’s armies
and of course, a steady supply of fine French
42 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
wines. To this day there is a traditional warmth
from the French to Scots visitors. The day
started well as we made our way to the meeting
point just South of Edinburgh at “The Steading”
in fine weather. A large room had been made
available for us to meet and have tea or coffee
and biscuits with a briefing on the planned
day’s events. James had everything well
planned as usual. He is a man of many useful
contacts which he puts to good use in order that
2CV Ecosse is guaranteed a good event. The
route through Edinburgh was planned by locals
Ron Pickles and Robert Cunningham. We all
were in possession of a route and map before
we set off on the one hour city drive. Fifteen
“A” series and a “D” snaking their way through
Edinburgh’s busy streets where we entertained
the rugby fans and plenty of locals to a cheery,
colourful and noisy cavalcade of our wee
French cars. We had flags of both nations flying
and were waving back as the crowds waved and
cheered as we passed. Our destination was the
Murrayfield Car Park where James
had prearranged a parking area
for our cars through his contact,
Colleen Williamson, who is the
Scottish Rugby Union “Events
Organiser” at Murrayfield and was
very helpful in arranging for us to
parade and park up at the stadium.
It is a tradition that people turn up
to park a couple of hours before
the match to indulge in picnics out
of their car boots. This produces a
very jolly atmosphere as you can
imagine. We were all parked close
together and soon had camping
tables and chairs set up for our
communal picnic. There was
plenty of time for visitors to walk
about and admire our cars. After
the picnic we did get a photo with
Colleen in the car park. My wife,
Zara, managed to get some shots
out of the open car roof during the
run of waving, cheering fans. Some
of us had tickets to the game and
the rest of us cleared up and set
off homewards. Altogether a most
enjoyable way to spend a day. So,
thanks James. We now have to
wait two years to do this again. Oh,
the score? Scotland won 29 to 18.

PRE-1970
2cv: Pre 1970
The 2CVGB Registers
afraid nothing of any significance has
Iyou’mhappened
recently which has come my way. If
are all sitting on secret and amazing stories
of your beloved voitures or your adventures in
them, then do let me know, else I will rabbit on
myself.
OK. Here goes. My first 2CV was a 1958
French jobbie which I bought for £100 in 1970
from a splendid fellow near Southampton who
repaired Citroens. The 2CV was to replace
my ‘sporty’ Fiat 850 Special, (twin exhaust
manifolds and wooden gear knob of course).
This was I great car. It could give a Mini Cooper
a bit of a run for its money up to about 60mph.
I had a Webasto sunroof fitted for £60, ready
for a trip to Italy. During this trip somehow I
became engaged and therefore the Fiat had to
go, (it cost £600 and I was still paying for it), so
I could save for a house.
The 2CV AZ was a revelation and I drove tens
of thousands of miles in it, frequently having
to bash the headlights or rear lamps to make
them work, or the regulator to make it charge.
Once, when driving from Exeter to Portsmouth
in the middle of the night, I dozed off just
before a very sharp left hand bend. I woke in
time to swing on the wheel and slid into the
passenger seat! At this point I forgot the car was
a LHD and vainly groped for a non-existent
RH steering wheel and pedals. No harm done
luckily– just a gentle meeting with a grass verge.
Cut to French/Swiss holiday 1972 after
the car had been liberally coated with blue
polyurethane paint. The Simplon Pass was
interesting. All the French and Germans in
their DSs and Mercs peeled off into the rail
tunnel – easy life. We Brits, (I think the £50
allowance was still in force), could not afford
such extravagance and pressed on for the
summit. A fully loaded 425cc 12hp car took its
time but got there without hitch. At the summit
there only seemed to be Brits packed in Morris
Minors, a Ford or two
and one valiant 2CV!
‘Twas on the same
trip that a Hook joint
gave up on the OS
driveshaft. We were on a
campsite and onlookers
from the nearby French
tents, wondering what
a Brit would do in
this situation, seemed
duly amazed when
I went to the boot
and summoning as

much sang froid as I could,
unpacked the necessary
tools and a replacement
driveshaft which I fitted
with encouraging ‘advice’
from the crowd and many
congratulations when the
job was completed. Later the
bonnet flew open and bent,
so there was nothing to do
but hammer it back into
shape again. Ripple bonnets
were not given much respect
then. Then there was the time when the brakes
overheated and failed coming down a mountain
pass...but that’s another story!
Meanwhile here are some piccies of my first
2CV, ROR 86G.
Time to go. The nurse is bringing me my
Horlicks. World Meeting is next year! Who is
braving a drive to Portugal in an oldie?
Keep calm - you’re driving a 2CV.

number plates by the looks!) Bob also has most
service history and old MOTs to go with it. PRV

when compared to ’T’ reg 2cvs.This could be
attributed to a seam of poor quality steel being
used by Citroen around late ’77 to mid ’78,
with many 2cvs (and Dyanes) sadly dissolving
at a much quicker rate. Which is a shame, as
this was the first full year of RHD production
in Paris (having been built up to late 1977 in

unmoved, since July 1990, a whole
twenty five years of dormancy! To
give it some perspective, it means that
this 2cv was locked away before 2cv
production ended in Portugal, Timmy
Mallett was in the charts with that
annoying Bikini song and Margaret
Thatcher was still Prime Minister.
And it had done nothing since; apart
from (sadly it would appear) getting
quite wet. So – what is it then? FYM
325V, a 2cv6 Club finished in Vert
Jade, registered in March 1980. This
was the first model year for this colour,
with Jade appearing in late 1979 and
replaced the earlier Vert Bambou, and
also more or less coincided with the
transition of the 2cv6 to 2cv6 Club
as a trim designation. Anyway. On
first impressions it appeared that this
poor little 2cv had seen a lot of action
considering it had only been on the
road for ten years, with every wing
badly dented, and the whole body
pock-marked with chips and breaches
to the paintwork, into which surface
rust had taken hold. This was likely
due to the garage being quite humid
or damp. But more alarming was the
state of the bonnet hinge and vent
shutter area, almost totally rotted
out, and further investigation also
revealed the cross member behind
was in a poor way too. The driver’s

were also some lovely colours around – Jaune

to name a few. You may remember in the last
instalment that I mentioned the discovery
of yet another Dormant Drummer, so here’s
the story! Word got out about a ‘rusty green
2cv’ that had been sitting unused in a garage
for a long time, and the house owner now
needed it gone as part of a larger clearance. It
transpired that the car had been in the garage,

footwell had been patched too, no doubt
as a result of water ingress from the above.
However, looking beyond this, the car was
actually in pretty decent condition, with all
other areas of the bodyshell being remarkably
good, including usual areas such as boot
floor, sweeps and rear heels. The chassis too
appeared to be in a good state, with only the
smallest bit of grot on one rear leg. The interior
was complete with original green stripe jersey
seat material reasonably intact, save for some
sunlight damage to the top of the rear seat.
The roof looked to be the original and carries
the supplying dealer window sticker, with
matching number plates. Amazingly, the car
rolled happily out of the garage with unseized
brakes, and all the tyres pumped up and held
air, albeit with fairly hefty flat spots! With a
little persuasion and some new
fuel the car fired up and ran,
and as the brakes appeared to at
least do something the plucky

ello all, with luck spring is finally with us,
although as it was the beginning of March
when I wrote this, there has been little sign of
it so far, despite some daffodils popping up in
January. I’m afraid the cold put us off going to
Firkin Freezing, the Derbyshire Firkin Flyer’s
excellent annual winter camp. The thought
of leaving a pleasantly warm cottage to live in
a frozen trailer tent in the Peak District, just
didn’t appeal for some reason. Must be my
age… Nothing of any particular interest has
happened with our cars either, they just keep
happily burbling on, bringing a little enjoyment
to winter motoring. It’s just been too cold to
tinker or make a start on rebuilding the everexpanding pile of old engines and carburettors
that are amassing in my lock-up. Mrs Goat’s
Dolly, Delilah, has her MOT coming up soon,

so I’ll probably give her a service beforehand
and with luck this will get me back to getting
my hands dirty and actually give me something
to write about. Although it is very gratifying
- and I know I’m asking for trouble by even
mentioning this - having two 30 year-old cars
in everyday use, running more reliably than the
modern(ish) Kia, is a bit boring when you have
a monthly column to write.
New Registrations/Updates
It has been a surprisingly quiet month for new
registrations and updates. With around four
hundred vehicle registration forms having gone
out with the March renewal reminders, I was
expecting rather more than just four forms.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind not having
anything to do, it’s just you will all suffer as I

desperately try to fill the blank spaces with my
deranged ramblings. This column is primarily
about your cars, rather than my unhinged
outlook on life.
It might be only four cars but they are rather
good ones this month. Firstly we welcome
Alison Tappenden and her 1986 2cv Special,
Lily Rose, C398 RJB to the register, still looking
good in red and white with a matching roof and
seats. Some of you may remember this car from
the cavalcade at Registers Day 2015 and the
August 2015 issue of 2cvGB News. Alison has
owned her since November 2013 and would
dearly love to find out more about her. This is
where I must ask for some help - does anyone
remember this car? She may have been a Dolly,
possibly in green and white. With 12 former
keepers it is hard to tell any more, but the
probability is that at some point a club member
(or two) owned her. Any information you send
me will be forwarded to Alison.
On the other hand, Mr D Moody
knows the entire history of E970 OFU,
his resplendent 1987 maroon and black
Charleston because he has owned her from
new. Judging by the ribbons in the picture
she is still good enough for wedding duty
too. Interestingly, although all the black
paintwork had been redone, the maroon is
original. Over the years he has had all the
usual work carried out to keep her in fine
fettle, a galvanised chassis, 1-2-3 ignition,

new wheels, seat covers and (I think it says
here) an external engine crankcase breather.
I presume he means a CPD (crankcase
pressure dump) valve fitted between the oil
filler/breather unit and airbox, I have one on
my car and I must say it works very well.
Next up is F300 GND, an update from
Stuart Smith who last registered this 1988
Special in 2008 when she was painted
in Ivoire Borely (AC084) one of the older
colours Citroen used on 2cvs in 1972-1974,
I believe. Since then she has been fully
restored by Pete Sparrow into the beautiful
car you see here, repainted in another longforgotten colour, Bleu Cyclades (AC622) from
1966-1968 and what a beautiful blue it is.
I imagine that it goes pretty well too, even
though Pete has managed to resist putting a
BMW engine into this one.
The other update is a rather special 1982
maroon and black Charleston, owned
by Colin Taylor. Now registered as HGD
839X, she was originally FGB 692X, wore a
cherished plate for a while and then received
her current age-related registration number.
Incidentally, this is another useful bit of
information to add to the register and I
am very grateful to Colin for supplying it.
Colin’s mother, Kathleen, bought this car
in 1984 when it was just over two years old
and had 15,400 miles on it. Colin took over
ownership last year but what makes this
car so unusual is that in the last thirty-two
years she has covered less than 12,000
miles! She is now showing 27,300 miles and
is completely original, even the roof is the
same one she came out of the Citroen dealer
in Glasgow with. This, I think, makes her a
very rare and special car indeed, there can’t
be many left not only untouched but with
so little mileage. The Taylor’s have certainly
looked after her very well.
Other Disc Brake News
Phil Bagley’s Bamboo, E524 ECK, you may
remember was mentioned last month.
This spurred him into sending me some

decent pictures and a bit more information
on the car. She has now covered 115,000
miles and was renovated back in 2001.
She appears to be in good order for a car
restored fifteen years ago. He recently fitted
new bumpers and repainted the wheels,
which helped smarten her up. This lucky car
has her mechanical needs looked after by
Ken Hanna, so presumably she goes 5mph
faster and uses at least 5mpg less fuel than
everyone else’s car.
Jeff Fox has been in contact about his
grandson Callum Lowe, who got a much
better eighteenth birthday present than I
did - this rather good-looking red Special,
C210 EKL. Here is a picture of the two of
them; apparently Callum is learning to drive
in his new 2cv, which is good to hear. He
might have a problem with trying to take
his test in it, as I believe the test car must
have headrests on the front seats, for some
bizarre reason. I’m sure this was the reason
my daughter, Emily, didn’t use my car for
her driving test but went back to the muchhated Vauxhall Corsa driving school car
she started learning in. Anyhow, Callum’s
very shiny car was supplied by the everindustrious Will Waldron of Cambridge 2cv,
someone I would happily recommend after
the lovely job he made of Delilah’s re-chassis
and the repair of her crusty underpinnings
last year. I would like a completed
registration form for this car please chaps,
as the VRN and ‘red Special’ is not really
enough information for a register entry.
Joe McGuigan has also contacted me about
his 1987 Plums and Custard Dolly, D68 XUF
and supplied this rather nice picture of it. She
was restored onto a new galvanised chassis in
2014 and looks very nice too, although I am
intrigued to see the winter grille muff fitted
and the roof rolled back. I would risk betting
that it is even colder in East Kilbride than the
Fens, but maybe Joe is much hardier than me.
Could I have a filled-in registration form for
this vehicle too so I can add it to the register,
please Joe?
I am more than happy to register your
vehicles from just an email, especially as it
is the best way of sending me a picture good
enough for use on these pages, but it really
needs to contain all the information asked for
on either the paper or the online forms (on
our website – www.2cvgb.com ) For some
reason I don’t always get an answer when I
ask for this in a reply to your original emails –
perhaps some of you have some overly sensitive
anti-virus protection that puts my emails into
your Spam box? I find it worth having a look
regularly in mine as some, but not all, of the
online registrations get put in there.
This technology that we are becoming so
reliant on gets me down sometimes. It is the
randomness of certain problems that gets
to me. For example, I can’t email Mrs Goat’s
TalkTalk email address from discbrake@,
(well I can, but she won’t receive it) but I can
from my personal one, despite them both
being Gmail accounts… Can anyone explain
why this is happening? As Simon said last
month, the club really needs a Web Manager,
someone who actually understands IT and can
come up with solutions to these endless little
niggles would be very welcome.
I look forward to reading about and seeing
some more of your cars over the coming
weeks. If you would like to see your pride and
joy gracing the May issue, the deadline for
registrations and pictures is the 8th April; this
gives me just about enough time to collate all
the information in time for my copy deadline
of the 10th. Earlier would be better.

at last. We met up with a lot of fellow eccentrics
at Goodrich Castle on 28th February. It was
a jaunt organised by local group Wye Knots
2CV, in memory of Bob Longworth. Many of
them met at Hereford, but we joined the splinter
convoy which was headed by Gary Dicks as
they went past our home town, Monmouth. We
all joined up with the peloton at Goodrich. Kate
drove our daughter Sarah in the Acadiane and I
drove our son Tom in the Mehari, Rufus.
It was a lovely afternoon. Something like
22 Citroens parked in a row and we chatted,
then had refreshments in the very good café at
the castle. There was a queue but the food and
coffee was worth the wait. We had to go to a
birthday party in the afternoon, so missed the
meal at the pub, but we had a great time. Many
thanks to all who made the effort to travel and
to Jenny Tipton for organising a lovely day out.

realised that it’s not difficult to put a mattress
across the shelves in the back of the Acadiane.

and for that matter the insurers, will say about
the idea of her taking on such an adventure. I’d
personally love to go with her in convoy, me

friction damper and batteur suspensioned,

Xavier is the car in which Sarah and I went for
the day (very slowly) to the wonderful ICCCR
in Harrogate in 2012. Xavier has no radio, so
Sarah played the ukulele and we had a singsong
to while away the long return journey. Mr.
Google tells me that Middachten Castle is 497
miles from Monmouth via the tunnel. That’s a
long way to drive at 45mph…especially when
Sarah and her Uke are in another car.

for the benefit of all those who follow. Once
lost, these subtle variations are usually gone
for ever. Please don’t think I am not suggesting
that we should ‘list’ cars. A Citroen Mehari is a
mass produced item, after all. It ‘belongs’ to the
owner, who must be allowed to do with it what
they will. All I would advocate is that if original
parts of a car which are no longer or likely to
ever be available are to be replaced, they are
kept safe and offered to those pedants like me
who prefer to see or carry out gently authentic
repairs rather than wholesale restorations.

have found some more Mehari websites that
may be of interest. They are becoming more and
more difficult to find. Please could you send

HY There
y all, first a worrying story from Jay Jones,
H
he emailed me saying: “I am writing to let
you know my Citroen H Van has been stolen
from Birmingham on 24/01/2016. I would just
like to make you aware in case anyone tries to
H VAN
and the whole car has never been on the road
or registered. So, I’m trying to decide what the
plan is. Admittedly I’m not likely to get round
to doing it until the winter but that should give
me time to find parts etc. It has been cleaned
up (the combination of farm yard and scrap
yard has been cleared from inside the car)
and rolled under my demountable lorry back
store to keep it dry. The first question is what
I do engine wise. As the fitted 1300 GS engine
fitted is seized and not in particularly good
conduction. The 3 options as far as I can see
are: 1) to do a complete re-build the engine on
the engine I have. At a quick look, its missing
its front cowlings, the carb looks to be in a very
bad state and generally everything which isn’t
aluminium has a lot of rust on it (i.e. I wouldn’t
trust things like the oil feed pipes). Pros of this
are I should end up with an as new engine.
Cons: it’s not going to be particularly cheap,
I’ve never been a fan of re-building engines
and to be honest the engine that’s in it doesn’t
seem to actually fit that well under the Falcon
bonnet. 2) find another second hand Citroen
4 pot engine and do a straight swap. Pros are
that it will probably be the cheapest and lowest
hassle option, cons are that you never know
quite what state a second hand engine is in, you
still have a heavy lump up the front end and
again the engine fitting well issues. 3) Go all
out and fit the BMW R series engine I’ve always
sort of fancied. Pros are obviously performance,
performance, performance. Cons are that it will
be more expensive than either option 1 or 2 and
is going to probably be the most like hard work
to fit. I am currently veering towards option 3,
on a bit of a “do it once and do it right” kind of
ticket and that it will then be rather silly fun
to drive, but I’m open to thoughts, suggestions
or people offering to sell me the parts I need
to do any of the 3 options! Other than that,
the body shell needs some tidying up, and
putting back together but is basically all there.
It is slightly wider than my green Falcon, so
there is actually enough space to fit the pair of
proper bucket seats I got for my old Falcon but
were to wide. I also hope to actually manage to
get a hood made for it - something I never did
with my old Falcon as I was never convinced I
got the body good enough to warrant it! Being
an Ami super it has the wider rims and front
anti role bar. Though saying that, the rims
are not all quite the same - there are 2 of one
pressing and 2 of another! It also has the Ami
sell it on your website. If you do
see it please contact West Midlands
Police and myself on 07739530874.

The theft was also reported on the BBC

Birmingham & Black Country website:
“A stolen 1960s van, used as gourmet
pie shop, has been found thanks to a
social media appeal. Sandie Harrington
noticed the Citroen H van, nicknamed
Claude, in her pub car park in
Warwickshire. The van, belonging to
Birmingham-based Pietanic, was stolen
over the weekend from its storage unit
in Highgate. Owner Jay Jones, who had
had to cancel forthcoming events as
his equipment was inside, said he was
thrilled to get it back. Ms Harrington
said she had been looking through
social media and saw the appeal on the
BBC WM Facebook page to get the van
back. “When I looked at it I realised it
was actually sitting in my car park. I’ve
noticed it over the last few days, because
I thought what a cute little van.” The
pub is in a small village and people use
the car park all the time, so she did not
think anything of it, she said. She called
the police and spoke to the owner who
was “over the moon,” she said. Mr Jones
tweeted to thank all the people who had
shared his plea to find the van. West
Midlands Police said it could not yet
confirm the van had been found as the
owner or police had not yet seen it, but it
did sound as if it had been”
Well that’s great news lets hope Jay’s
van is returned quickly undamaged.
It does beg the question that since the
rise of interest and value of the Van,
due to the amount of street food/coffee
vans popping up all around. Does this
make our vans a target for unscrupulous
people. If anyone has thoughts about this please
write in, it could be a good debate.
On a lighter note I’ve had one registration
this from Victor Chen the year of his van is
1969 but he doesn’t know what type, I’m still
waiting for some pictures, so if they arrive I’ll
send them in next time.
As Jay tubed it and didn’t lose it lets hope this
is a one off.

or usual? I have had a look around online and
couldn’t find one anywhere so I hope it’s not
broken! If I have confused you then I’m sorry!
I’m not sure if I have explained it very well,
in the instructions I have followed he said
to be careful with them as they are handed,
which I understand but might help you better
understand the bit I mean! Also - the rubber
on the end of the drive shaft had a hole in it
so whilst I was ordering the brake parts I also
ordered a set of inside and outside rubbers.
Could you give me a pointer as to how to
actually fit them? Do I need to remove the shaft
or can I take the cv joint off the end and slide
them both on from there? I have more questions
but I will hang on and not bombard you! Thank
you very much for letting me pester you a bit!”
That ok Chris that’s what we’re here for! Hope
you get it all sorted, if you do please let me
know with pictures of course.

The last word ...
the February edition of your News
IandtthatwasmeI inrelated
what happened to Flossie
in Gloucester a fortnight before
Christmas and how we managed to get home
after changing the regulator, begging a jump
start and then conserving the lights on a 30
mile journey up the M5. Well I now need to
finish the story. I hardly used Flossie over
the Christmas and New Year period and
what little use she did get was in daylight
so no need for the lights and the wipers,
well they were just slow. It wasn’t until the
second week of February that we discovered
what the problem had been. Pete Sparrow of
Sparrow Automotive had been doing some
mechanical work on Flossie and I mentioned
the problem to him on one of my visits. He
immediately diagnosed inadequate charge
from the alternator which was remedied when
I got home by the simple expedient of fitting
of new contacts, the old ones having very
uneven wear. Anyway no more problems in
that department since. However, it is not all
good news for Flossie has a persistent and very
irritating noise which sounds like it must be
coming from the transmission and which has
resulted in the gearbox being dismantled and
rebuilt twice without any noticeable benefit,
so it must be something else, but what. She
is perfectly useable so I keep driving her but
I am going to have to embark on a serious
programme of investigation just eliminating
62 | 2CVGB News | APRIL 2016 | www.2cvgb.co.uk
one possibility at a
time until I find the source. Hopefully I will
learn something in due course in which case
I will share it with you. An up side of this
mechanical nonsense is that I was lent Sparrow
Automotive’s courtesy car whilst Flossie was
indisposed. I know that some of you will be
aware of this car but for those of you who are
not I can say that it is a very interesting device.
It looks far from standard as you can see and
it certainly turns heads and gets lots of smiles
but the really interesting bit, the bit you can’t
see, is the 1100cc BMW motorcycle engine
under the bonnet. You really don’t need to be
concerned about holding up traffic even on the
steepest of hills which in a strange way makes
it more relaxing to drive than a standard 2cv.
It is noisy, the suspension is very firm and
it corners flat but so what, it is a bit of fun.
Recently I have been turning my attention to
other Citroen interest and have been relining
the front brakes on our Light 15. Fortunately I
have a garage which provides me with plenty
of room for working undercover but it is not
very comfortable in the winter because it is
cold and it takes the concrete floor a long time
to warm up as we move into spring. However
as I write this piece the relining job is nearly
done and the car will be out on the road again
in the next few days and I will then be able to
turn my attention to some welding that needs
to be done to Henry the H, not anything too
extensive, fortunately, but necessary to pass the
MOT. That work will have to be done outside
because my garage doors are not high enough
to accommodate Henry, so dry and not too cold
is the order of the day. Fortunately, the weather
has looked up in the last few days, spring has
definitely arrived.
One day last week I was interrupted from
my labours in the garage by a knock at the door
and was greeted by Jonathan Barwick. Many
of you will know Jon of course. He used to live
in Worcester and was a regular visitor not just
to the WyeNots and WASPS but to other local
group meeting around the country. Three years
ago he moved to Shetland, not just Shetland
but to Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland
islands and therefore the most northerly part
of the British Isles, so he is the most northerly
member of 2cvGB and his green and white 2cv
is the most northerly 2cv in Britain. He and his
2cv had just travelled down from the Shetland
Island ferry terminal at Aberdeen. And here he
is with his car outside Snigs End. You will see
that the car sports the badge of the Shetland
Classic Car Club quite a rare item in this part
of the world. Of course the islands host a
classic car show every other year and the next
one is this summer. I am told that it is a very
popular event which attracts people from far
and wide. Search Shetland Classic Motor Show
and download the brochure. Maybe you could
combine a visit to the show with a visit to our
representative in the northern isles.
The spring like weather tempted me out
into the countryside last Sunday to an event
at the Shelsley Walsh hill climb. This is the
home of the Midland Automobile Club and
is, apparently, the oldest operational motor
sport venue in the world having opened in
1903. It is in a spectacular location on the side
of the valley of the River Teme in North West
Worcestershire. Apart from all the usual race
and other activities, once a month they host a
Breakfast Club which is open to all. However,
you are advised to check out the arrangements
by visiting their web site: - www.shelsleywalsh.co.uk. Apparently it is very popular and
they seem to have started a booking system
recently. It is definitely worth a visit. As the
guide books would say, it is worth a journey.
Flossie was the only 2cv on site and was parked
in the adjoining field but Darren and Sheena
Howard were there in their Pembleton and they
had booked to park in the paddock. It was a
very enjoyable morning and the full English
was very good. The next one is on the 10th
April. That’s all for this month, Go safely
Simon Saint
From the editor: If I might add to this
Worcester-centric celebration, I must
agree with Simon that Shelsley Walsh is
a magnificent place to spend a Castrol R
scented Summer Sunday. And if you go on
Classic Nostalgia day you might just be
able to blag your way into the concours
d’elegance, as an unwashed and dog eared
Earl Grey did a few years ago. Predictably
he was beaten by pretty much everything
but he made people – including Sir Stirling
Moss – smile so I wasn’t too upset.
