Aldershot Garrison Show - Rushmoor Borough Council
Arena www.rushmoor.gov.uk Summer 2012 Aldershot Garrison Show PLUS Join in all the fun of the forces’ fair Be Inspired: Election 2012: Taking pride: Olympic-themed arts and sports events across the borough Boundary changes mean a new council for Rushmoor The latest developments in Aldershot and Farnborough Contents 3 www.rushmoor.gov.uk A bright and busy summer is beckoning By Cllr Peter Moyle, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council W elcome to the summer edition of Arena magazine. By the time you receive this magazine, we will be in the full swing of a busy year for celebrations and activities. As well as the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Olympics that are putting the UK on the world stage, we are proud that Rushmoor will also be in the spotlight with events, including the Aldershot Garrison Show on Saturday 23 June and the Farnborough Air Show, which takes to the skies from Monday 9 July. These promise to be excellent days and this year’s Garrison Show will be especially poignant, as it also incorporates our local Armed Forces Day celebrations in the 30th anniversary year of the Falklands Conflict. As I write this column, the Westgate leisure complex in Aldershot is taking shape at a tremendous speed. The contractors will begin fitting out the cinema and food store in the next couple of weeks and we are on track for opening this autumn. I can’t wait! I am also looking forward to work beginning on the refurbishment of the Queensmead shopping centre, which we hope will bring us a step closer to the regeneration of The Meads. See page 11 for details. As you’ll be aware, the local elections took place in May and my thanks to all who voted. The controlling administration is still Conservative. We are moving full steam ahead with council business and in this edition of Arena, you will also find details of all our councillors and how to get in touch with them. If you’re not sure which ward you’re in, you can check by visiting the ‘In my area’ feature on our website, www.rushmoor.gov.uk/inmyarea. This feature will also give you lots of handy information, including what day we collect your bins and where the nearest facilities are to your home. If you are looking for ideas to keep your youngsters amused during the long, summer holidays, we hope you will find some ideas in this magazine. Finally, I’m delighted to tell you that we are launching a new battery recycling scheme in Rushmoor to add to other recycling schemes. Collections start on Monday 9 July – you can find more details on page 14. Have a great summer! If you’ve been past the site recently, you’ll see how quickly it is now taking shape, with the development still on schedule to open this autumn. The multi-million pound development will bring a seven-screen Cineworld cinema, Morrisons food store, eight family restaurants, a Travelodge hotel and a new car park to the town. It will also provide around 450 permanent jobs to the area. Most of the jobs are expected to be advertised in the next two or three months, although Morrisons has already started recruiting for managers. If you are interested in working at Westgate, you can contact the companies direct. You can find their details at www.citygrove westgate.com – see the ‘occupiers’ section. Contact us To keep up-to-date with Westgate, see www.rushmoor.gov. uk/westgate New bandstand awaits its community Bands, theatre companies and craft markets are among the many groups that can use Aldershot’s new bandstand in Princes Gardens. Specially designed for community use, the bandstand was officially opened at the town’s Victoria Day Diamond Jubilee celebrations on 2 June. Buried below the new structure is a time capsule, filled by the pupils of Talavera Junior School. “We consulted widely on the design of the new bandstand, and feel it has a traditional feel with a contemporary twist,” said David Phillips, the council’s Town Centre and Cultural Manager. Any local groups wanting to use the facility should contact the Princes Hall on 01252 327671. Aldershot’s calendar competition returns Calling all amateur snappers who’d love to see your photos in print and help a local charity. The Aldershot Calendar Competition is back for the third year running and this time will be raising money for Aldershot charity, Parkside, which provides support for local children and adults with learning disabilities. You have until September 28 to send us your pictures of Aldershot – perhaps your favourite building, monument, garden, park, the changing seasons – anything that captures and celebrates the town. We will then choose the best 12 photos for the calendar, which will go on sale for £5 across the borough this autumn. Last year the calendar raised more than £900 for young people’s charity The Source Café. You can enter online at www.rushmoor.gov.uk/ calendarcompetition or send your entries to Carla Dale at the Princes Hall, Princes Way, Aldershot , Hants GU11 1NX. Unfortunately, we can’t return any of the photos submitted, so please don’t send your only copy. Once again, the competition is being sponsored by The Wellington Shopping Centre in Aldershot. We’ve received more than 430 pledges of community support in our bid for Aldershot to become a Portas Pilot. Retail expert and TV star Mary Portas’ campaign will see 24 towns across the UK each chosen to receive £100,000 to rejuvenate their town centres. The first round of towns chosen for the pilot were due to be announced in May, as Arena went to press, with the remaining expected in June. The £100,000 funding would energise plans to make Aldershot the vibrant and exciting place local people and businesses want it to be. Local businesses and land owners have already pledged their support and agreed to be part of Aldershot's 'Town Team' to help deliver our vision for the town centre. Our Portas Pilot bid focuses on three areas: l Helping people to get into retail business. We want to make it easier for potential retailers and entrepreneurs to try out retailing through pop-up shops and marketstyle stalls l Supporting our existing retailers. We want to work with retailers to identify and cut down on red tape and barriers to growth l Making Aldershot known for its excellent customer service. We want to work with retailers and their staff and support training opportunities. The new national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) tells you the food hygiene standard reached by nearly 600 establishments across Rushmoor. The council’s environmental health officers have rated them all from zero to five. Zero means urgent improvement is needed, and five that hygiene standards are very good. You’ll find this rating on the FHRS sticker either in the window or door of the premises, displayed inside, or listed online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings. This is the first time a food-rating scheme has been adopted nationally, so you’ll know a four-rated restaurant or supermarket has the same standard of food safety wherever you are in the country. Top ratings: Domino’s (top) and Caffe Macchiato Town centre transformation Work is set to start this summer on the multi-million pound make-over to transform another of Farnborough’s shopping hubs. The Queensmead shopping centre is getting new paving and seating areas, a new square for markets, community and seasonal events, and improved lighting. A large tree, surrounded by seating, will provide shoppers with a convenient meeting place. This major refurbishment is another step in wider £250 million proposals to regenerate the whole of the town centre for both residents and traders during the next decade. More than £150 million is also being spent revitalising The Meads shopping centre. Contact us For more information, see www.rushmoor.gov. uk/farnboroughplans The ratings are made following unannounced food hygiene inspections of food businesses by the council’s environmental health officers. The businesses are rated on their standards covering food hygiene, structure and management systems. Food businesses also welcome the new ratings. “My customers can instantly see my standards,” said Jakob Czamecki of Café Macchiato in Aldershot, which has a five rating. “Inspections and ratings motivate businesses to keep on top of things. So it’s good for them and their customers. Everybody wins.” Dilip Sodha from Domino’s Pizza in Farnborough – also a five – agrees. “It enables customers to be confident in the take-away food they choose. “It’s also nice to have our name out there, listed on the special website.” Marking 40 years of twinning Happy birthday this year to 40 years of activities that continue to enrich the lives of residents young and old in Rushmoor and France. During the past four decades, thousands of secondary children from Rushmoor and Meudon have swapped places for a few weeks each year. Football and rugby teams from both towns have played in joint sports tournaments. Language circle groups in both are also very active, with annual exchanges. This year’s visit to Rushmoor included trips to Windsor Castle and a guided tour of the House of Commons by MP Gerald Howarth. “A new scheme is linking primary schools. In March last year, 40 children from St Joseph’s Primary in Aldershot visited a partner school in Meudon,” said Alison Boukhobza, from the Twinning Association of Rushmoor. “There are also Jazz festival in Meudon contemporary music links. Farnborough Sixth Form College jazz band, Prospect Five, played at a music festival in Meudon last September. In fact, the band’s saxophonist has been offered a place at the Music Conservatoire in Meudon. This is something of an honour as it is quite famous in France – and all through twinning. “And not forgetting Meudon's wonderful annual Christmas Market. Meudon always invites Rushmoor to man a stall selling English Christmas specialities which provides an opportunity for us to make new contacts.” 12 What’s on The listings June 13 – July 11 Mini movers Aldershot Library and Learning Centre Wednesdays 9.45am - 10.30am For ages 20 months - 4 yrs. £18.50 01252 322560 or email [email protected] June 22 SNAP Disco. Despite the hosepipe ban, those taking part in the competition are already proving to be very inventive with ways to conserve water and still produce beautiful displays across the borough. And with 14 categories to enter, from Best Front Garden to Best Wildlife Patch, Most Water Efficient Garden and Best Newcomer, there’s certainly something for all types of gardener. You can enter online at www.rushmoor.gov.uk/ rushmoorinbloom or pick up a form from the council offices. Judging takes place between July 9 and 18. “The judges are looking forward to seeing the Residents will be able to recycle their batteries from July 9 when the council launches a new household battery recycling service. Some of this year’s judges at the Rushmoor in Bloom launch at Squire’s Garden Centre(l-r): Rosemary Posse, Hen Howard, Stephen Dawson, Caroline Elpelt, Colin Balchin and Frank Rust. entries and appreciate all the hard work that has gone into each and every one,” said competition coordinator, Susan Jones. “We are also very proud of our entries into the South and South East in Bloom campaign,” she said. The Aldershot Allotment Society and Rowhill Nature Reserve are also keen to show the South and South East in Bloom judges around for the second year, as well as Shaftesbury Court in Farnborough, which last year won a distinction in the Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards. And Aldershot hopes for town centre award Have your fingers crossed for Aldershot in this year’s South and South East in Bloom competition. The town is being entered into the ‘town centre’ category of the competition for the third year running, with the South and South East judges touring the town in July. Aldershot scooped a silver gilt award last year, and we’re hoping to at least match that success this time round – or better it, of course. Sponsored by Southern Water, the competition encourages everyone to get involved to improve the local environment. The local community, retailers and volunteers have all pulled together over the last year to make the town look and feel at its best. The results will be announced later this year. Help us save water and keep Rushmoor green With the hosepipe ban set to last for some time yet, there’s lots you can do to save water at home and in the garden. We are affected by the ban too, so we’ll be using our water supplies very carefully over the summer. We’re watering the borough’s newly planted trees, bedding, hanging baskets and repairs to sports pitches using water from our bore hole and, for the time being, from Cove Now you c Brook and River Blackwater. We’ve also asked householders who have a new tree outside their home to help us by watering it with ‘grey water’ – their dish and bath water. At home, the drought means you can’t use a hosepipe to water your garden. However, there are lots of simple steps you can take to help save water, including fitting a watersaving device to your toilet; making sure you have a full load in your washing machine or dishwasher; reporting leaks; using a water butt to collect rainwater and mulching your plants to lock in moisture. If you are a blue badge holder, you can apply to South East Water for permission to water your garden with a hosepipe. For more advice or to find out about hosepipe concessions, visit www.southeastwater.co. uk/drought We will be delivering three battery-recycling bags to homes in the borough during June for you to start collecting your used or discarded batteries in. Simply fill up each bag to the top, seal it, and place it on the lid of your blue bin on collection day. “These bags are just to get you started,” said the council’s contracts manager, James Duggin. “It will probably take a normal household about six months to fill one up; they are quite big. Once you’ve used Price freeze fo Prices for our garden waste recycling service have been frozen for both this year and next year. More than 6,200 householders across the borough are already taking advantage of the service, saving them time and petrol on trips to the dump with their garden prunings, lawn cuttings and leaves. A 240-litre brown bin costs £38 a year, a pair of 90-litre bags £30 a year and bundles of single-use sacks £8. Collections are fortnightly and concessions are available. We take the garden waste to the composting centre near Basingstoke where it is turned into the soil conditioner, Pro-Grow. This determines where we send them to be safely recycled.” People across the UK currently use more than 600 million batteries every year – that’s an average of 21 per household. A staggering 582 million of these end up in landfill, with harmful chemicals leaking into the soil. “That’s the simple aim of our scheme – keeping these batteries and their toxic chemicals out of landfill or incinerators, “said James. “We would like to see everyone taking advantage of this new scheme.” Still time to insulate your home for free There’s still time to make your home ‘toasty’ for free in time for winter. Thanks to extra funding, households now have until September to apply for free loft and cavity wall insulation under the Insulate Hampshire scheme. Not only does the work keep homes warmer in winter, but also cooler in summer and saves on average some £300 a year on fuel bills. Insulate Hampshire is a joint scheme being offered by 12 councils across Hampshire, including Rushmoor Borough Council, and Hampshire County Council, with funding from Scottish Power. These community volunteers are among those helping to introduce wildlifefriendly plants into urban areas – such as those pictured here, on the corner of Grosvenor Road. The new plants will provide food for wildlife, such as nectar and berries. For the rest of us they’ll be pleasing on the eye.
