APRIL PROGRAM
Monday, April 25, 2016 @ 7:00 p.m., at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church
SPEAKER: Carol Taylor
President’s Column
Dearest Ladies,
I adore spring! I look forward to the pale
shades of green as the trees and plants start to
grow. It is a time of renewal. It is a time of hope
and joy. My prayer for all of you is for peace,
joy, hope and happiness in all you do this spring
and summer.
There are lots going on in our group this
year. As always, Robin is getting terrific
speakers and setting up wonderful workshops.
Please sign up in order that we can continue to
have these national speakers come. Do not
forget the challenge Robin and Gail are
promoting. I know all of you have a special quilt
in mind. Go for it! Do something different! Try
your wings! Go outside your comfort zone! I
am!
Angela has done a great job with our
monthly activities. They sure have been fun!
Thank everyone who is joining in the activity.
You ladies are so talented. I look forward each
month to see your ideas.
The generous gifts of your talent to the
community always makes me feel lucky to
belong to this group.
A special “thank you” to Dawn and her
friends for saving the Retreat. Thank you, thank
you Nancy and your super friends for heading
the Retreat for so many years.
Remember to mark your calendars.
September 30, 2017 will be our next Quilt Show.
Start your ideas for that quilt you have in your
head that you plan to enter
God bless you, my friends.

Carol Taylor website:

Internationally known, award-winning quilt artist,
Carol Taylor, approaches her quilt making with
intensity and a seemingly boundless energy.
Vibrant colors, striking contrasts, use of value,
as well as heavy machine quilting and
embroidery distinguish Carol’s quilts. She has
created over 500 quilts since she began quilting
in 1993. She also serves on the SAQA (Studio
Art Quilt Associates) board of directors.
Sensuous Lines and Curves Workshop
Do you love the look of those really skinny lines and
curves, but don’t know how to make them? Now is your
chance to learn. Carol shares the secrets of piecing
them, and you can make those practice blocks into a
lovely wall quilt (41 x 36) full of those “sensuous lines
and curves”! You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small
quilt, which you can do in any 4-5 basic colors you like.
Check Carol’s website (www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to
see how many quilts Carol has made using these same
techniques in her Linear Series, and then come make
your very own version.

May 23rd - Lecture
Awesome Activities!
Kate Eelkema, Finishing School for
Your Quilt
We had a great first two months of
the small projects challenge!
February’s small projects had 13
mug rugs exchanging hands. My husband
snatched the one I took home for his office (first
time wanting any quilted item!)
March’s challenge did not disappoint with 21
mini quilts made that will be going to the
Methodist NICU. Your votes for the viewer’s
choice was Sue Haug and her lovely cross stitch
bunnies. (pictured right).
NQA Certified Judge Kate
Eelkema has many
interests, but her two
passions are quilting and
children’s literature. After
raising four daughters she
enjoyed a career as an
elementary media
specialist, sharing great
literature with hundreds of students every week.
Since retiring she has been busy reading to her
grandchildren, updating the library at the
elementary school she attended as a child,
planning studio tours for the Minnesota Quilters
Guild, giving lectures on judging to area guilds,
judging quilt shows, and trying to get a little
quilting done.
Lecture:
You have taken a quilt project class, or followed a
pattern in a book or magazine, and you have a quilt
top completed - now what? How do you turn that
quilt top into a completed quilt? What about the
borders, batting, backing, basting, and binding?
What should you know if you are going to enter your
quilt into a show or competition? Join NQA Certified
Judge Kate Eelkema as she shares great tips and
hints for the quilt finishing process: information that
can greatly improve the quality of - and your
satisfaction with - the finished quilting project.
April’s small project
challenge will be 12 1/2”
unfinished blocks, pieced or
appliquéd, pastels and white,
a basket, flower, or butterfly
theme. There will be a
drawing and the winner will
take home all the
blocks. May’s small project challenge will be
pincushions exchange, any size or shape and
your choice of color.
UFOs are just getting started with 13
participants and many taking home an index
card to put together their list. There was also 2
UFOs finished off of those lists! Remember
you will get to pick a fat quarter from my
basket for completion of each UFO! Let this
be the year for getting UFO’s done! If for no
other reason than to make room for more fabric
and projects!

2016 WOW Quilt Challenge has been
posted. This quilt challenge asks the quilter/artist
Deane Gradows - batik scraps her own design
to select an artist or art style for inspiration and
create a quilt from a particular picture, the style,
color, shape, line, form, repetition, etc. Please don’t
create a literal copy but use for inspiration only as
this must be an original design. Copyright laws do
apply to this challenge.
Bring your $5.00 entry fee to the meeting to get the
application from Robin or Gail. The web site has the
size requirements and judging criteria. Quilts will be
due by July or later. The quilts will be judged by an
outside judge.

a place to be among people that share
the same interest of the art of quilting.
Meetings are held monthly on the 4th
