Background
The Santa Barbara Unified School District’s (SBUSD) students need a flexible way to complete courses
that they have not passed. This fall a credit recovery committee was formed to research online credit
recovery programs. Aventa Learning program was selected. Features unique to Aventa are the English
learner (ELL) support, and both the recorded and live teacher support. Online courses are a creative
and flexible way for students to complete courses during the school year or during the summer. In
addition, classes can be taken at school or at home.
Aventa’s online credit recovery curriculum provides schools with a cost-effective, comprehensive and
flexible program that offers a wide variety of subjects for students. The online courses are crafted to
keep students on task and moving forward, utilizing a “chunked” methodology to increase retention, as
well as pre-recorded audio, pre-teaching of vocabulary and if needed, ELL support.
Plan
Staff recommends purchasing a total of 200 reusable Aventa Learning licenses. The life of each license
is 365 days and most schools can use a license three to four times during that period. If purchased
before March 31, 2012, this package includes 10 free semester courses, which is a $3,290.00 value.
Fiscal Impact
The annual cost for 200 licenses is $20,000 and can be supported by Pupil Retention Block Grant
funding. Additionally, a one-time expense of $750.00 will be incurred from Title II funds to train the
teachers, administrators and counselors that will manage the online program.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Board approves the purchase of the Aventa online credit recovery program.

ONLINE EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ORDER
This Online Educational Products and Services Order (this “Order’), dated as of January 12, 2012
(the “Order Effective Date”), is between Santa Barbara School District, 2743 Glendessary Lane,
Santa Barbara, CA 93105 (“Customer”) and K12 Virtual Schools LLC ("K12”), 2300 Corporate Park
Drive, Herndon, VA 20171. This Order incorporates and is in all respects subject to the K12
Online Educational Products and Services Agreement Terms (the “Terms”) that is published at
http://www.k12.com/educators/sy2011_contract on the date that this Order bears the signatures of
both Customer and K12. All capitalized terms that are not defined in this Order will have the
meanings assigned to those terms in the Terms.

indicated herein, at the prices set forth below and pursuant to the Terms.

3. Description of Educational Products. Customer will be provided the Educational Products
specified in this Order.
Aventa Original Credit and Credit Recovery Courses.
The available Aventa licensed online educational courseware. Aventa may from time to time,
in its sole discretion, deliver or otherwise make available to Customer certain updated
courseware, which such updates shall also be subject to all of the Terms. Customer
acknowledges and agrees that certain courseware and updates thereto may be
designed to utilize separate textbook products or course materials and Customer shall
be responsible for procuring such materials. All materials, assessments, and teacher
guides provided directly by Aventa are included.

Description of Services. Customer will be provided the following Services under this
Order:
Instructional Services: Customer will be provided qualified teachers, licensed as required by
applicable state law, for instruction to enrolled students for selected courses.
Aventa Hosting Solution:
The set-up, configuration and hosting of the applicable courseware for the delivery of Aventa
courses, solely for the provision of educational services to its students in the Territory
enrolled in Customer’s educational programs.

Fees. For the Services and/or Products provided under this Order, Customer shall pay to
K12 and/or its Affiliates the following Fees:
Aventa Subscription License (Per Enrollment):
Aventa provides a 14-day grace period for students who enroll. If a student withdraws
within 14 days from when the student enrolls, Aventa will refund 50% of the course
fees but only if this withdrawal was received in writing by Aventa by fax or email
before the grace period ended. Enrollments under the subscription license model
will be invoiced on a monthly basis.
AP Online Courses
$329.00* / Course Seat (Includes course, Aventa Hosting
Solution, and Instruction)
*K12 will waive the cost of the first 10 AP Aventa Online Courses to the Customer for the initial
Subscription Term. For each Aventa course enrollment after the first 10, any additional course
enrollments will be provided at the standard pricing listed above. Promotional offer is not applicable
to a renewal term (if applicable).
Aventa Credit Recovery Online Courses:
*10 blocks at $2,000 per Block of 10 Reusable Annual User Seats. “Reusable Annual
User Seat” means a Student enrolled in an Online Credit Recovery Course (0.5
credit). Once a student is dropped or has completed the course, that seat is then
available for another student. Customer may at its option purchase Blocks by
submitting a purchase order to K12 indicating the number of Blocks purchased.
The parties agree that no terms or conditions set forth in the purchase order shall
be binding on K12 other than the number of Blocks ordered. The term shall be one
year from the date of the purchase order. Customer will be invoiced upon receipt

Credit recovery program. By its very nature if a student drops from a course the
concurrent user seat is then open for a new enrollment.
