Welcome,
Bonsai Association Belgium gladly welcomes you to the
15th Noelanders Trophy.
Dozens of top bonsai enthusiasts and professionals will present to you their best bonsai
from all over Europe. We are grateful to all these bonsai friends who have worked for
years to show us their single most impressive bonsai.
We would be pleased to also welcome your trees at this extraordinary show. You can give
your own trees a place in the collective memory of the European bonsai community.
Remembering the success of last year, we will again have a trophy for the best deciduous
tree. Of course the other categories - the overall winner, the winning kifu, and the best
bonsai from a member of Bonsai Association Belgium – will also be rewarded.
Throughout this booklet you can find pictures of all the winning trees from the past 14 years. They give you a good impression of the quality of the trees that you can expect to see.
Because of the ever growing number of visitors, and as we want people to relax and enjoy
the beauty of our bonsai exhibition, we have decided not to allow photography anymore.
Looking at a bonsai takes more than a ‘click’ of one second. All the trees will be photographed professionally, and will be available afterwards in a full colour book for a price less
than a memory card. We are sure that every visitor will feel the difference in atmosphere.
Four bonsai masters will give simultaneous demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. They have been professionals for years and will share with you all their
experiences.
Start your bonsai year in January and make new friends over a pint of Belgian beer.
Bonsai Association Belgium is most grateful to all traders for their support. We provide the
pot (an old mining building) and the trees, but we need you as soil and fertilizer! Thank
you.

Demonstrators
Ryan Neil
Ryan’s career in bonsai began long before he made the commitment to a life with little
trees. Born and raised in Colorado, Ryan spent his youth amidst the fantastic array of
tortured and stunted trees that give the Rocky Mountains their splendid character. It
wasn’t until Ryan was in high school when he found bonsai, but his passion for the art
grew and led him to California. It was there he obtained an education in horticulture
and met Mr. Ben Oki, who proved to be the catalyst for organizing Ryan’s apprenticeship with world renowned master Mr. Masahiko Kimura.
Six years after stepping into the shoes of a bonsai apprentice, Ryan is now a bonsai
professional pursuing excellence in the art throughout the United States and abroad. His
travels have taken him as far as Europe and Asia. However, Ryan quickly contests his
most ambitious endeavors remain within the United States.
The Western world has yet to realize its full potential in the art of bonsai. Through the
coordinated efforts of respected professionals, dedicated enthusiasts, and like-minded
groups and organizations Ryan hopes to achieve a bonsai community capable of self
sufficiency. Only then will western bonsai truly be able to represent itself and give voice
to the amazing species and trees which characterize this culture.
Kevin Willson
Kevin Willson was born in Essex, England and moved with his young family to Kent
in 1978. His early career in gardening and appreciation of Japanese art and culture first led him to Bonsai in the early 1980s. With a sound horticultural knowledge
he began to develop his understanding of Bonsai from books and magazines.
He began to work with Yamadori Bonsai in the late 1980s and soon became recognised for his unique Bonsai designs. Following his early success as a Bonsai artist he
decided to set up a teaching facility. The Yamadori School of Bonsai was started in
1999 and has since developed many great students and Bonsai.
The idea of the school is to promote the use of Yamadori materials and to help develop a new generation of free thinking Bonsai artists.

Sandro Segneri
Sandro Segneri is a bonsai artist, photographer, sculptor and painter. He
founded a bonsai school in 1996 called the Bonsai Creativo School, the
first school dedicated to the exclusive formation of Italian bonsai instructors who applies the academic method with the collaboration of national
and international lecturers and instructors. In 2003, the Italian Association U.B.I. called it out as an official school for the training of bonsai
artists. From 2000 to 2005 students of Bonsai Creativo represented Italy
at the EBA New Talent Contest, capturing the first prize in 2003.

David Benavente
David Benavente formed his first bonsai at the age of 14. Later he became a potter
and for ten years he was curator of the royal botanical gardens in Madrid. David
followed masterclasses with Masahiko Kimura in Japan. He gives workshops and
demonstration and wrote a lot of articles in international bonsai journals. Some of
his creations were shown at the EBA exhibition in Munich.

BONSAI ASSOCIATION BELGIUM
Sinds 15 jaar promoot Bonsai Association Belgium VZW de bonsai cultuur in
Vlaanderen. Onder leiding van de voorzitter Marc Noelanders brengen we een
kwalitatief hoogstaand programma.
Alle activiteiten tijdens het jaar vinden plaats in het Cultuurcentrum Muze te
Heusden-Zolder. Elke eerste woensdag van de maand kan u vanaf 19.30 u een
demostratie of een lezing bijwonen door zowel binnen- als buitenlandse bonsaimeesters.
Met succes bieden we een basiscursus aan van zes lessen verspreid over een
heel jaar. U leert de eerste theorie en begint met zelf een bonsai te vormen. In
een vervolgcursus gaan we per avond dieper in op een bepaald onderwerp. Uw
eigen bonsai worden samen besproken en keer op keer verder afgewerkt onder
begeleiding.
Bonsai Association Belgium neemt deel aan allerlei andere publieke evenementen om bonsai meer in het daglicht te
stellen.
Met voldoening merken we dat de kwaliteit van heel wat privé bonsaiverzamelingen doorheen de jaren gestaag
omhoog blijft gaan.
