The above opener was unknown before 2003 when it appeared in Dave Lendy’s collection. A circa 1900-1910 cast iron opener. Has anyone else turned up an example?
In the April issue I showed two variations of a B-13-4 Fink opener and said that the
one made by the Advertising Novelty Company of Chicago was rare. Then two members told me at Harrisburg, they had the rare version. It was amazing to me that the D
-5 Budweiser opener had not turned up before since Anheuser-Busch made so many
different openers and most D-5s that are listed are easily found. The next couple of
issues I will concentrate on showing some rare St. Louis openers.
——–—–2008 JFO Convention #30 April 16-20 St Louis MO—–-——
It is hard to believe six months have passed since Harrisburg and St. Louis is right
around the corner. Registration is on the last two pages of this issue. As of now we
are planing a couple of house tours and possibly even more. Art Santen will be doing
his open house to see his collection of 40,000 openers and corkscrews. Right now he
is asking that only members who have not seen his collection make the tour but we
can check attendance closer to the convention and hopefully allow anyone who would
like to go see his amazing collection. A local breweriana collector, Don Roussin, has
offered to open his house up for a tour and he has a super super collection of Missouri
breweriana with a lot of nice openers and corkscrews. The hotel, the Doubletree Hotel & Conference Center St Louis, is located in Chesterfield, Mo. at the junction of 40
and I-64. The direct number is 636-532-5000 for reservations. Be there !!!
————————————Member’s Update———–--———————
Russ Harding, long time JFO member, brother of Norm Jay’s wife, Judy, lost a long
battle with cancer on August 5th. He is survived by his wife Sylvia. Russ was a frequent participant in the JFO auction and collected breweriana in general.
——————–————Future JFO Conventions———–--—————
After a recent discussion with Scott Williams about going to Amana, Ia. in 2009 it
was decided to postpone Iowa until 2010 since the location is so close to St. Louis
next year. Several members have expressed an interest in three areas; Stan Summers
and Kurt Bachmann in Michigan, Jeb Burruss in San Antonio, Tx. and John Cartwright in Paso Robles, Ca. Whoever can get a hotel lined up first we will go with. If
anyone has comments or other suggestions please let me know. If not in 2009 or
2010 we can always plan further ahead. Send me your ideas!

Spouse’s Corner
By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse
Right at the onset of this column, you need to know that John Stanley does not like to get hot or dirty unless he is out in
the garage in the heat of summer polishing a new acquisition with polishing compound flying all over his body. You
will understand the significance of this fact as you read on.
This summer I saw a beautiful gazebo at Sam’s Warehouse that is 12’ in diameter. I drooled over it every time I had to
go get more toilet paper and paper towels (Mr. Clean panics if we do not have lots in stock). I even talked to the store
employee who assembled the dream house to see if someone who hates anything not ready for use could put it together
for his dear, dear wife..or if not for her, for Jazzy and Snazzy to enjoy.
I was told that it was easy to put together, so I made the plea. See my parents had a gazebo that I got when they retired
and moved to Florida. Such memories of good times drinking and laughing in that screened in retreat. And oh how I
enjoyed it on Sunday mornings after it became my haven from all the stresses of the world. When John and I married
twenty years ago next week, I had to leave it behind when we moved to his condo as gazebos don’t fit on balconies too
well.
Well, we couldn’t just put it on a fairly level section of the yard, he wanted to build a retaining wall into the side of a hill
and fill in the hole with dirt. Yes, dirt…lots of dirt to be hauled and dumped by someone who hates to be hot or dirty.
Time passed without the purchase as it had become way too complicated and expensive. My gazebo sold out. Then
John went to the Can Convention in Denver. I had to go to Sam’s to get supplies for a function at work. I saw the employee who had been so patient answering my questions and told him that I never got one and all the Sam’s in the USA
were sold out. Much to my surprise and joy he said they found one when they took inventory, but he had no idea where
it was now. He would need a stock # to locate. Then he looked over his shoulder and there it was, two boxes weighing
about 200 lbs each. Did I want it?? Of course!!! It’s fate!!!
Now Dave, my friend at Sam’s, was concerned about me hanging these boxes out of the back end of my SUV, each box
about the size of the table top of a picnic table. Oh, I would be fine, just fine.
Arrived home after traveling most level route I could go having the least traffic. Managed to push the first box onto the
floor of the garage, the front of the garage. Have you ever tried to push a 200 lb picnic table top box across concrete. It
doesn’t work! My dear neighbor who has rescued me more than once when I’m an opener widow, saw my latest predicament and came over. Now he is very smart and his plan to put broom handles under the obstacle and roll the boxes
to the back of the garage was perfect. Only problem was that about half the door step into the house was blocked, but I
would fix that before John returned.
Be prepared for a slight interruption as I go off on a tangent. When John went to NABA this year or somewhere…I
can’t keep up to his travels…I somehow rolled my foot over a single piece of gravel while walking the dogs and took a
nasty fall. Little did I know that the next time John left on a trip, I would do much worse. The dogs were barking and I
knocked on the garage door that goes into our kitchen to get their attention and tell them to be quiet. I was standing on
the step into the house and stepped back, slipping on that box and falling onto the concrete right on my hip!! Wasn’t too
excited about the gazebo then. I have good bone density tests and I certainly tested these old bones on this one. John
asked if I could just stay in one piece until he got home. In the meantime this bruised, beat up spouse had to walk the
dogs several more days before he returned. I did unpack the boxes and set up the panels against a wall in the garage
where hopefully nothing would happen.
Oh…another tangent must be addressed. I moved John’s new Expedition away from where the panels were resting as I
sure did not want to have them fall on a vehicle he picked up the night before he flew off to NABA He was having trouble getting out of that low car. Now I can be a passenger again as I avoided the little car as much as possible.

Spouse’s Corner (continued)
Back to the gazebo. John returned on a Saturday night around 10 p.m. so I could have bet my life that he would say that
he was tired, had been gone and the gazebo would just have to wait until sometime that would be probably next spring.
I am still surprised that he worked on it (his retaining wall approach plan) that very Sunday and Monday (Labor Day)
and a couple nights that week and the following week-end. Landscape businesses were closed, so although not very
economical to purchase dirt by the bag, I hauled 13,000 lbs of stone, soil and sand to the production line in the old SUV
(mine) to keep him supplied.
Not enjoying it yet, as the floor has been difficult to decide on and we have been traveling some and the newsletter is
behind partly because of the gazebo…hope you don’t mind. Today I think I found what I want, waiting for the quote to
see how many openers it takes for a pretty floor, a circular pattern. Hopefully we will be able to spend some time inside
the gazebo before long. I have purchased a table and chairs, we just need the floor.
Don’t blame the gazebo entirely for the newsletter being late. I attend a conference in the
fall in the mountains of North Carolina held at
an extremely nice resort. A few years ago
John figured out what a great place I was going and has been tagging along ever since.
Dinner on the porch overlooking the mountains is one of our favorite times.
This year we boarded the dogs for the first
time while we were in the mountains
(Asheville, NC) for the conference. It’s
about 3.5 hours west of Chapel Hill. That
week-end we had to be in Knoxville, TN for a
small reunion of what little family I have.
Knoxville is a couple of hours further west,
but we came all the way home first to pick up
the dogs as we didn’t want their first time
away from us to be too long. So we did a lot
of driving that Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
One trip was in the new SUV!!
But the dogs will be better prepared for us to
leave them behind in November when we
head to San Francisco, then again in April
when they can not come to JFO.
John also had a week-end at the beach with the “guys” he works with, so the newsletter is very late, but I’m sure it will
be worth the wait as he puts his heart into each page.
Looking forward to San Francisco when we not only enjoy a fun place to visit, but get to see Jack Ford, John Cartwright
and Pete and Angela Nowicki!! John says no bike trips this year!!
Then before we know it, the 30th Annual JFO Convention will be here!! I’ve had to fax information about the convention opener for John. It’s really exciting!!
Hope to see you in the Gazebo or at least in St. Louis.

P-80 Froedtert Malt Corkscrew & Bottle Opener
By Joe Young
I often wondered what Froedert Malt was and who made it. Thank God for Google.
I discovered that Froedtert Malt was a product of the Froedtert Malt and Grain Co.
of Milwaukee, WI.
Back in the 1950’s it was the largest producer of malt in the world. The president of
the company was Kurtis R. Froedtert. When he died in 1951 he left an endowment
of 11 million dollars to build the Froedtert medical complex in Milwaukee. It has
quite a fine reputation in the upper mid-west.
The corkscrew is somewhat unique in that it incorporates a bottle opener on the
lower portion on both sides of the cage. I suspect that it was patented. I believe that
it is American but I have yet to find a patent for it.
One side of the cage is marked
FROEDTERT and the other side
of the cage is marked MALT.

The Hawkeye Beer & Soda Collectibles Show
Des Moines, IOWA July 26-28, 2007
By Ollie Hibbeler #149
Shirley was only on her tenth week of recovery from new knee replacement surgery. She was being more mobile and
both her and I were a little “STIR CRAZY”. So we decided to go to the Des Moines Show. Her doctor said that we
should stop about every hour so she could exercise by walking a bit. That was just fine as I could always find an antique
shop, mall or junque shop to stop at. Nothing too good for that gal! Found a couple of breweriania items to sell at the
show. My “FIND” was a large dental forceps for extracting horse’s teeth. Openers aren’t the ONLY things to collect!
We arrived Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Inn. Registered, rested (I’m 77 years old) awhile and went to the beautiful Prairie Meadows Race Track for supper and the horse races. I lost and Shirley won. She knows a lot about horses.
Some are brown and some are gray.
Friday some of the rooms were opened and the hospitality room opened in the P.M. Shirley exercised in the swimming
pool and hot tub. KIND of overdid it. Friday evening we returned to the racetrack. A repeat of Thursday evening.
Good thing I only bet two dollars a race. Shirley won again. What did I tell you? Saturday morning we set-up early at
the IOWA State Fair Grounds. We had a lot of competition for parking space as the JOHN DEERE collectors were at a
show and auction in the next building. Breweriania collectors are “PIKERS” compared to the John Deere group. Big
dollars change hands with that group. Never saw so much GREEN & YELLOW!
Fellow J.F.O. members John Mlady & Bob Post were in attendance. Bob told us that his wife Sara was recovering from
a double mastectomy. Let’s wish her the best and a speedy recovery.
I sold good enough to cover the trip. That’s all I ever ask for. But I did not sell very many openers. I did purchase six
openers that were reasonable. One from Missouri that I didn’t have, a B-18-701 Rochester Brewery, K.C., USA. I did
win two raffle items and also the grand prize, a “GARTEN BRAU” neon. A Wisconsin beer I believe. Not bad for a
guy who didn’t do well at the horse races!
We enjoyed the hospitality room Sat. night. Went to bed early so we could leave early on our 350 mile return trip. We
stopped at the beautiful town of PELLA, IOWA, Home of Pella
windows and doors. After making more stops along the way, we
arrived home at 9 P.M., tired and contented from a good time on a
long week-end. What more could a fellow ask for? One downside ~ $135.00 worth of gas!
Next a breweriania show on Sept. 15th in Council Bluffs, IOWA.
Put on by the good guys of Cornhuskers Chapter. Then a show in
Springfield, Illinois on Oct. 6th and then my 13th and LAST year
as a host for an antique fishing lure and tackle show on Nov. 3rd.
But looking forward to the J.F.O. show in APRIL 2008! BE
THERE!!

In Bob Roger’s newest book on Ice-Reducing tools I noticed on
pages 162-163 William F. Paradise’s patent for a mumble peg
toy and ice pick. It is US patent #1,956,875 issued on May 1,
1934. Does anyone remember playing mumbly peg as a kid? I
do, but we played it with a jack knife.
After seeing the patent (right) I remembered a similar piece in
our corkscrew/bottle opener collections.
The piece pictured at the top was a gift from Vic Keown at the
JFO Convention in Frankenmuth, MI, April 22, 1989. Since
then, we have acquired another similar piece. Both pieces have
advertising for ice.
The photo below shows our second piece. Both of our two
mumble peg toy/ice picks have elongated wooden handles
which incorporate a Williamson corkscrew/bottle opener in the
opposite end.
I had wondered if these two pieces were ever patented. Now I
know-- but not as a corkscrew/bottle opener but as a mumble
peg toy. I just though you would like to know.
Editor’s Note: Thank you Joe for the Froedtert and Mumble Peg Articles. For soda collectors the Mumble Peg patent is a style P502. I have the Pepsi-Cola advertising
opener/corkscrew/icepick (previous page).

some wheeling and dealing. I got to meet a couple of Jeb
Burruss’s trading buddies from Texas, Charlie Staats (see
Jay-Cee Bar Mount Article January 2007 JFO) and Jaime
Pina. Once again it was nice turnout by the JFO community.
The first and last of August I attended two national shows.
In early August it was NABA Convention in Bay City, Mi.
Thanks to a recent collection purchase by Norm Jay I did
add a few openers to the collection. Opener traffic was
okay but nothing great except for Norm’s room. He will
have most of this collection in St. Louis next April. NABA
always has lots of JFO members in attendance and Bay
City was no exception.
The one theme I heard at these two shows and have for
some time now is that most of the “small” collectibles end
up on eBay. It is just too easy to sit home and sell that
way. I will say it is easy to stay home but selling on eBay
takes time and effort. I have been listing 10 items per week

Below
Two homemade or altered openers. The I-7
(bottom opener above) was cut down including removing the can piercer point. I guess
easier to carry in one’s pocket? The B-19 had
the swivel cross piece added (left). What
function the cross piece was for I am not
sure.? Any ideas from the members?
