Volume 31 No. 9

From the Desk of Susan Dillon
Hello to all of our Ela 55 Plus Members,
On a cold January morning, Ela 55 Plus staffer, Connie Bellio
was leading her Sit N’ Be Fit class. Upwards of 50 older
adults were in our center exercising that morning. As class
ended, one woman started to feel “off”. She seemingly
melted to the floor, while an alert peer noticed and was able
to catch our friend before she fell completely back towards
the floor. In a flurry, Connie ran to her aid, the crowd of
concerned folks was dispersed and 911 was called.
Meanwhile, a fellow staff person immediately ran to our
member file cabinet and pulled out the ailing member’s
waiver and medical information sheet. Our member had since
become sick to her stomach, short of breath and ashen
colored.
As the AED was brought to the scene, the paramedics
arrived. All of this had transpired in short minutes. When
the paramedics asked of medications the member might be
on or medical conditions to be considered, the staff quickly
checked the medical information sheet only to see that none
were listed. Immediately, the emergency contact listed on
her sheet, her husband, was called. He informed staff that
his wife was indeed on high blood pressure medication….a
fact that was vital to her treatment according to the
paramedics.
The member’s husband had no idea of the medication name
or dosage...or even where his wife kept it. The paramedics
told us this was not unusual, continued treatment and
eventually transported our member to the hospital where
she received further treatment in the CCU. Luckily, all was
well.
I would love to tell you that this was a “one time”
occurrence. However, realistically we all know that the
possibilities of these types of emergencies at our center,
FOR OLDER ADULTS, is an every day possibility.
For this very reason, and this reason alone, we must insist
EVERYONE, who comes into our center or participates in any
of our programming, fills out a waiver and medical
information sheet.
We do not share your information with anyone other than
emergency medical personnel when needed. Quite frankly,
we do not have time, nor do we have the desire to sift
through all of the forms to see who is taking what!
As the paramedics themselves have stated to us on more
than one occasion, “having the patient’s medical information
written and at our fingertips saves valuable minutes at a
critical time of care”.
Please take this request seriously as a prompt to come in and
fill out your medical information sheet or to simply update it.
It could be the information that saves precious time when
trying to help you!
Thank you

Pilates presents a method as the art of controlled movements,
which should look and feel like a workout (not a therapy)
when properly manifested. If practiced with consistency,
Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops
control and endurance in the whole body. It puts emphasis on
alignment, breathing, developing a strong powerhaus, and
improving coordination and balance. Pilates' system allows
for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty
from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over
time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

Brain Tricks
In honor of April Fools Day, we will talk about our
brain and how it continues to trick us on a daily
basis. We will learn all about optical illusions, why
we convince ourselves that you get what you pay for,
and discover how we justify the behavior of ourselves
and others constantly. Our brain can be our best
friend, and our worst enemy at the same time.

Differences Between Men and Women
A revised topic from a previous class, we will once
again delve into the differences between the brains
of men and women. Why do they behave and
communicate differently? Why does my husband
refuse to listen? Why does my wife obsess over
details that don’t seem to matter? A lot of it has
to do with the brain!
Wednesday, June 17
1:00—2:00pm
Brain Limits
As amazing as our brains are, they obviously have
their limits too. We will learn what happens to our
brains with sleep deprivation and try to look into the
more paranormal workings of the brain. Can people
really have a 6th sense? Are psychics real? Is there
such a thing as having a photographic memory? We
will look into all of these things and more!

RULES OF THE ROAD
10:00—11:30am
Super Seniors is a convenient and voluntary program for driver's
license renewal, which includes Rules of the Road classroom
instruction, and a vision-screening exam. The Rules of the Road
Review Course also includes a review of safe driving techniques and
Illinois driving laws. These services are FREE for those 65 and older.
Does your license expire within a year? A Secretary of State Mobile
Driver Services Unit will be available for participants to renew their
driver's licenses, unless you are due for a driving test. If you are age
65 and older you may obtain a free, non-expiring State of Illinois
photo ID card, all others are $15. Drivers age 75 and older are
required to take a driving test to renew their driver's licenses;
therefore they must visit a Driver Services Facility.
Free: Registration is required.
Completion of this two-day driving technique course often
provides savings on car insurance rates. Participants must
attend both days to be eligible for a class certificate.
Fee-$15.00 AARP member, $20.00 if not an AARP member.
Checks must be made out to AARP.
Registration is required.

Christy’s Corner
The noise and dust of construction will soon be
a memory and your newly remodeled library
invites you to celebrate with a grand re-opening
on Saturday, May 2, 2015 2-4pm. For those of
you who frequent our Children’s department
with small friends, a whole new experience
awaits you! Interactive panels, face out shelving
of picture books, new toddler play areas and so
much more await discovery. Upstairs in the
Reference department you’ll find more small
work spaces as well as glassed in quiet rooms to
study or read. Charging stations for lap tops and
cell phones and improved lighting are also
upgrades in the Reference area. Forge, our new
Makerspace takes those who enjoy crafting, or
experimenting with new technologies to a whole
new level. Come and witness a 3-D Printer
create objects while you watch or better yet,
learn how to use the software to send your own
images to be printed into a 3-D object. With
several sewing machines available we plan to
offer instructional classes in the Forge along with
many other hands-on classes. Specific class
offerings and times when Forge will be open for
experimentation will be available later this
spring. The Forge is located on the main floor
where the Teen area used to be.
Summer always includes the library’s annual One
Book One Reading Community program. We
asked our patrons to vote from a field of 5 titles
last fall and the winner is… “The Girls of Atomic
City: the untold story of the women who helped
win WWII” by Denise Kiernan. The book reveals
how the young women recruited for a top secret
project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee unwittingly
played a crucial role in one of the most
significant moments in U.S history. Available in
audio, large and regular print formats as well as
on the library’s Nexus tablets, the One Book
program will begin in May. Watch for many
related programs during the summer months as
well.
Senior Book Discussion
Join us at the Ela Area Library for a lively
discussion and debate over some of the
latest and classic reads. Join us in Meeting
Room A. Registration is required.
The Remains of the Day
By Kazuo Ishiguro
Monday, April 27
10:00-11:30 am
The Remains of the Day is a profoundly
compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of
his fading, insular world postwar England. At the end of
his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens
embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back
over his career to reassure himself that he has served
humanity by serving “a great gentleman.” But lurking in
his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord
Darlington’s “greatness” and graver doubts about his
own faith in the man he served.
NO MAY MEETING DUE TO
MEMORIAL DAY
Sally Ride:
America’s First Woman in Space
By Lynn Sherr
Monday, June 22
10:00-11:30 am
In Sally Ride: America's First Woman in
Space, Lynn Sherr writes about Ride's
scrupulously guarded personal life, with exclusive access
to Ride's partner, her former husband, her family, and
countless friends and colleagues. This is a rich biography
of a fascinating woman whose life intersected with
revolutionary social and scientific changes in America.
Sherr's revealing portrait is warm and admiring but
unsparing. It makes this extraordinarily talented and
bold woman—an inspiration to millions—come alive.
Happy Reading!
(Note: The group meets the 4th Monday of the month)
