From the Director’s Desk…
Hello All!
Last month in February, the Town sponsored a
wonderful challenge to all employees through their
Employee Wellness Program; “The Healthy Heart
Through Kindness Challenge.” I liked it so much
that I would like now to extend this challenge to
YOU! We can all work on keeping our hearts and
souls healthy by being kind to others. Try applying
acts of kindness into your everyday life for 10 days.
Keep a chart and track your acts of Kindness,
Gratitude, Forgiveness, Hope, and Love each day.
Make your goal be to fill in at least 2 of these
categories per day. We will have charts available at
the Senior Center for you if you would like one. I
found myself looking at the chart during the day to
coach myself, and looked forward to finding ways to
make a better day for others. Today’s Gratitude: I
am so thankful to work for a Town that values these
traits in their employees, and fosters a wonderful
work environment.
~Peace, Debi
Pass in your 10 day chart to us here at the Center,

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Linda Desrosiers
As many of you know, Linda Desrosiers is the Chelmsford Senior Center’s
Food Services Manager, but that title does not begin to describe the job she
performs. It might take the entire newsletter to do that, so you’ll have to settle
for a summary.
How long have you been in the food service business?
I started in 1978, when I signed up to be a substitute cafeteria worker in the
Chelmsford school system. At that time, my children were young and I
wanted a job that allowed me to be home for school vacations. Since I
always liked cooking, the school cafeteria seemed like the perfect job. By
November of that year, I was on staff at Parker School. I continued in the
school system for 15 years, in jobs of increasing responsibility. When I left, I
was the manager of the Westlands School cafeteria.
Why did you leave the school system?
My children were older, and I decided it was time to look for a full-time job.
At about that time, Lorraine Small, the Director of School Food Service
Programs, approached me about the position of Food Service Director at the
Senior Center. It was the perfect opportunity for me. I’d be able to keep
cooking and could also be more creative because I would be the one creating
the menus. I joined the Senior Center in 1993 and think I’m lucky to have a
job that I enjoy so much and that is so rewarding. Cooking and baking have
always been passions of mine, and I get to do plenty of that.
What kind of training did you have?
My earliest cooking lessons were in my mother’s kitchen. I started
experimenting with ingredients at an early age and discovered I had a flair for
it. The rest of my training was on the job, and I have plenty of that.

What are your responsibilities as Food Services Manager?
Menu planning is at the top of the list. For that, I collaborate with a
nutritionist at the Merrimack Valley Nutrition Project, who reviews the
monthly menu to ensure it meets all the required nutrition guidelines. I also
work with Natalie Dussault, the Center’s Program Coordinator, to tie the
meal-of-the-day to any planned activity, holiday or seasonal event.
I am also responsible for hiring and supervising the staff and volunteers. I
currently have a staff of three, each of whom has specific responsibilities.
The staff and I are backed up by a large number of volunteers who do
everything from peeling potatoes to washing dishes and manning the
registration desk. Most of the volunteers start out as participants in the Tax
Rebate program but remain after they have put in their hours because they
enjoy the work.
Other responsibilities include ordering supplies, banking — I even decorate
the kitchen area in keeping with the seasons. If one of the staff is out, I fill in
that position. I also take on special projects, such as the Chowder Fest, the
Veterans Breakfast, and other events.
How many meals do you prepare a day?
That varies from day to day, but probably more than you think. In addition to
the lunches at the Senior Center, we prepare close to 100 meals for the Meals
on Wheels program every day. On Tuesday, in addition to the hot entree, we
offer the soup and sandwich option. We also serve off-site meals several
times a week at three of the town’s senior housing facilities, giving residents
who aren’t able to come to the Center a chance to have a nutritious meal in a
social setting.
Next time you see Linda at the Center (where she spends a lot of time), be
sure to thank her for all the effort she puts into her job. Even though she
loves her job, it is hard work and it is always nice to be acknowledged for
your efforts!
The Senior Center lunch program serves a nutritious lunch
Monday-Friday 11:30am-12:30pm. Your $2.50 donation helps support
staff salaries, food costs and other operations of our kitchen.

Adult Social Day Program News
March 2015
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Many of you are aware by now that Maxine
moved back to teaching. However her presence still lingers on as we
continue with two projects that she left with us; hopefully we will be able
to do her justice as we complete these two endeavors. We want to wish
her the very best and thank her for everything she brought to our
program. While old man winter has slowed us down somewhat, we are
happy to report that we continue to have inquiries into our program and
we welcome all “newbies.” We are awaiting the jump into spring and the
rebirth and rejuvenation that we feel at this time of the year. We wish to
thank all of the hardworking folks who make our day program what it
is…….joyful. Have a wonderful month of March.
We want to be sure folks know about our cost-effective program ~ only
$30 per day ~ which is the best price and value in the area for an
active program offering peace of mind and respite for the caregivers. We
encourage you to come in with your family member and visit us to learn
more about what we have to offer.
The Social Day Program has openings for folks to enjoy these kinds
of activities and more! For more information please call Colleen
Normandy, Program Manager, at 978-788-6178.

Social Services
coordinated through the Chelmsford Senior Center
Please contact Elena Dear at 978-251-0533
or stop by our office to make a confidential appointment. Elena is available to meet with seniors to
assess needs, and to discuss services and programs available within our community.
Our goal is to help Seniors remain independent in their homes for as long as possible.
Services available include:
Meals on Wheels: Nutritious meals delivered to home-bound seniors. Call for qualifications.
Social Service Coordination: Home assessments, referrals and more.
Handicap Placards: We provide assistance completing the application.
Small home repairs serviced by volunteers: Free for Chelmsford residents ONLY; you pay for materials.
Personal Emergency Response Services: At the touch of a help button, you can summon assistance, even if you
are unable to reach the phone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program): If you are a senior, you may qualify for food assistance
through the Food Stamps program. Assets are no longer considered for seniors whose incomes fall within certain
guidelines. Food stamp eligibility is based on income and certain expenses.
SafeLink Wireless: This free cell phone and minutes program is for seniors who are INCOME eligible. You may
qualify if you participate in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid or Fuel Assistance.
Are you a Hospital Inpatient or Outpatient? If You Have Medicare — Ask!
If you’re in the hospital for more than a few hours, always ask your doctor or the hospital staff if you’re inpatient or
outpatient. Your hospital status (whether the hospital considers you an “inpatient” or “outpatient”) affects how much
you pay for hospital services (like X-rays, drugs, and lab tests) and may also affect whether Medicare will cover
what you get in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) after your hospital discharge. For more information, call
1-800-MEDICARE.
An Interfaith Day of Missions
Saturday, May 9th, 2015
West Chelmsford, Westford, Aldersgate and Centralville United Methodist Churches invites you to become part of
our community outreach Day of Missions entitled “Faith Works.” We started this program in 2008 and have met
many wonderful clients and families. We’ve installed handrails, replaced broken window panes, raked leaves, washed
some windows, repaired ramps, painted rooms and shared a meal with our new friends {we bring a lunch out for the
client}.
Client referrals are obtained through Social service agencies, Senior centers or personal requests and are reviewed by
our Faith Works Task force. Jobs are selected based on need. There is no cost to the clients or participants. All work
will be reviewed with the client before starting and afterwards to ensure the clients satisfaction.
All referrals must be received by April 13th. Please see Elena or call 978-788-6172.
Clients selected will receive a call and a home visit by members of the Faith Works Task force in the middle of
April to evaluate what they need done and if we can safely meet their needs.
Faith works and we plan to prove it!
