Halle Berry Cut From X-Men: Days of
Future Past? Not True, Says
Director Bryan Singer
Research Scientist Kumar Tiger is on a Mission
to Cure Diseases
By Shirley Hawkins
People frequently do double takes
when they meet 23-year-old Kumar
Tiger—dressed in a white lab coat
and intently hunched over a microscope, Kumar looks far too young to
hold the title of scientific researcher.
But don’t let his looks fool you. Tiger,
a senior at California State University at Dominguez Hills, possesses
a passion for curing diseases.
The budding scientist, who is currently majoring in molecular and
cellular biology and whose goal is
to become a biomedical scientist,
works as a volunteer participant in
Harbor/UCLA’s research science
program.
“People ask me why I don’t become
a doctor rather than a scientist, but
as a scientist, I will be able to help
treat many more people,” he said.
African Americans have the highest
incidents of health disparities and
Tiger wants to change those statistics. “I saw the health disparities
among people like me and my family and I was not satisfied with the
solutions being provided,” he said.
“I want to solve diseases such as
diabetes, hypertension and cancer.”
Tiger, who has worked on projects
involving genetic diseases like spina bifida, understanding proteins
involved in RNA localization, and
identifying how poison dart frogs
obtain alkaloids to defend against
predators, is currently researching
technology that treats limbal stem
cell deficiency.
“We are working on research that
will help restore vision in the eye,”
said Tiger.
The scientist is receiving student
funding from National Institutes of
Health (NIH) under the Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS)
and Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program.
“Because of their support, I can fully
concentrate on research,” said the
Lawndale High School graduate.
“The NIH also donates money to
help fund individual projects.”
Tiger said he thoroughly enjoys the
quiet intensity of lab work where
he spends hours developing research projects and testing various

Once Forgotten, Heroic Vets Of Three Wars Get Their
Due As Medal Of Honor Recipients
They were heroes who didn’t get their due.
On Tuesday, 24 ethnic or minority U.S. soldiers
who performed bravely under fire in three of
the nation’s wars finally received the Medal of
Honor that the government concluded should
have been awarded a long time ago.
The servicemen — Hispanics, Jews and African-Americans — were identified following
a congressionally mandated review to ensure
that eligible recipients of the country’s highest
recognition for valor were not bypassed due to
prejudice. Only three of the 24 were alive for
President Barack Obama to drape the medals
and ribbons around their necks.
“Today we have the chance to set the record
straight,” Obama said. “No nation is perfect, but
here in America we confront our imperfections
and face a sometimes painful past, including
the truth that some of these soldiers fought and
died for a country that did not always see them
as equal.”
The three surviving
recipients — Vietnam
veterans Jose
Rodela,
Melvin Morris and
Santiago Erevia
— received a
prolonged standing ovation at
Obama’s side,
their faces set in
somber acknowledgement of the
honor.
Rodela, now of San Antonio, was a 31-yearold company commander of a Special Forces
strike group on Sept. 1, 1969, in Phuoc Long
Province, Vietnam, when he and his company
of Cambodian soldiers whom he had helped
recruit came under fire from North Vietnamese
Army troops.

Daniel Beaty
Daniel Beaty is an award-winning
writer, performer, educator and
empowerment expert well-known
for his riveting monologue Knock
Knock, which has garnered over 1
million views on YouTube.
Daniel grew up in Dayton, OH, in
a home filled with addiction and incarceration. Since his father was in
and out of the US prison system 58
times Daniel relied heavily on his
mother for direction, strength and
support. Although his father was
unable to lay the foundation Daniel was looking for as a child, his
father’s absence did become the
fuel he needed to ignite a personal
pursuit to give voice to his creativity and empower change in others.
In the third grade after watching
a video of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.’s speech, I have A Dream, a
switch went off inside of Daniel.
From that point forward Daniel
used his words to express his
truths, empower himself and help
provide the tools needed for others to empower themselves as
well. Daniel began reading his inspirational poems at local churches, then regional gatherings and
eventually national conventions.
The words of a middle school child
from the inner city were starting
conversations across the country.
Daniel took his gift for speaking in
front of crowds and eventually attended and graduated from Yale
University with a BA with Honors
in English & Music and an MFA in
Acting from the American Conservatory Theatre. Since graduation
Daniel has written and performed
multiple best selling plays, received international acclaim as a
poet, and is also a successful motivational speaker.
Daniel has worked throughout the
U.S., Europe, and Africa performing various works that he has writ-
ten. His poem Knock,
Knock was met with
an unprecedented response from audiences
and garnered him an
instant global following.
He is a proud member
of New Dramatists and
an Adjunct Professor at
Columbia University.
Daniel’s first children’s
book based on his
poem Knock Knock is
slated to be released
by Little Brown Books
in December 2013 and
his motivational memoir, Transforming Pain
to Power: Unlock Your
Unlimited Potential will
be released March 2014
by Penguin Publishing.

Mexican Authorities Catch Alleged
Drug Cartel Member Trafficking
Human Organs
EYE
Freestyle Wrestling World Cup 2014
Police in Mexico’s western state
of Michoacan detained an alleged
member of the Knights Templar
cartel, saying he is suspected of
trafficking organs.
Michoacan state Public Safety
Secretary Carlos Castellanos
Becerra alleged that Manuel Plancarte Gaspar was part of a cartel
ring that would target people with
certain characteristics, especially
children, for kidnapping and harvesting organs.
He did not give any specifics or
present cases. He said investigators are looking into alleged cases
that occurred in previous years.
“We have several statements in
open investigations,” Castellenos
said at a news conference Monday.
Plancarte Gaspar, 34, was detained last week along with an-
other suspect in a stolen car. The
men were carrying cash and crystal meth, Castellanos Becerra said.
He said Plancarte Gaspar is the
nephew of Enrique Plancarte Solis, a top Knights Templar leader.
The federal government generally handles cases of trafficking
that have to do with cartels, such
as drugs and in the case of the
Knights Templar, iron ore.
Federal officials were not immediately available for comment
Monday, which was a holiday in
Mexico.
Mexican authorities have said
drug trafficking is no longer the top
source of income for the Knights
Templar, which was once a top
producer of crystal meth. The officials say the cartel’s main sources
of income are illegal mining, illegal
logging and extortion.

The University of California’s 13,000 Patient
Care Technical Workers, represented by
AFSCME 3299, have
voted 97% in support of authorizing an
Unfair Labor Practice
Strike, and have informed the University
of their intent to strike
March 24th-28th.
The strike stems from growing incidents of illegal, bad faith bargaining by university administrators.
This includes unilateral implementation of contract terms and benefit
cuts, and the university’s 11th hour
demands for sweeping new layoff powers, which could leave UC
Health facilities short-staffed and
patients vulnerable in the event of
medical emergencies.
AFSCME 3299 has filed Unfair
Labor Practice charges detailing
each of the violations with the Public Employment Relations Board.
Read the charges here, here and
here, and the strike notice letter
here.
“By repeatedly and illegally subverting the collective bargaining process, UC has created unnecessary
conflict and sabotaged our good
faith efforts to improve patient care
at UC Hospitals,” said UCSF MRI
Technologist and AFSCME 3299
ULP Committee member Randall
Johnson. “The frontline workers we
represent know that if left unchallenged, UC’s serial lawbreaking will
ultimately endanger the patients we
serve. And we are not going to let
that happen.”
Though UC has repeatedly suggested that financial constraints are
contributing to its collective bargaining practices [1], UC Hospitals netted over $632 million in operating
profit last year. [2] Since 2009, Annual Hospital Administration payroll
costs at UC have swelled by more
than $100 million, equivalent to an
increase of 38 percent. [3]
Two UC Hospital CEOs (Mark Laret
of UCSF, and Ann Madden Rice of
UC Davis) just made the Becker’s
Hospital Review list of CEOs of the
top 25 highest grossing “non-profit”
Hospitals [4], each receiving more
than a million dollars in compensation. Laret’s arrangement, in particular, includes six figure cash bonuses tied to profit goals. [5]
“It increasingly appears that UC is
willing to break the law and endanger patients in the pursuit of profit
and financial rewards for its highest paid executives,” said UCLA
Clinical Care Partner and AFSCME
3299 ULP Committee Member
Monica Martinez. “This would be
unacceptable for any hospital—but
it is especially deplorable when
it comes from a non-profit, public
health delivery system that is subsidized by California taxpayers.”
This is the second ULP strike by
AFSCME 3299 represented Patient
Care Technical Workers in the last
six months. The first, back on November 20, 2013, was in response
to a well documented campaign of
illegal coercion and intimidation by
UC Administrators against Patient
Care workers who had voiced concerns on issues of patient safety
at UC Hospitals back in May. That
matter is still pending before the
State’s Public Employment Relations Board.
The March 24-28 strike will impact
all five UC Medical Centers—Davis, San Francisco, Irvine, Los Angeles, and San Diego. As was the
case with previous hospital strikes,
AFSCME 3299 has voluntarily exempted 49 patient care technical
workers from participating in the
strike—Respiratory Therapists in
the PICU, NICU and Burn Units, as
well as several Hemodialysis Technicians. It will be forming a Patient
Protection Task Force to handle any
emergent medical needs that could
arise during the strike.

Halle Berry Cut From X-Men: Days of Future Past? Not
True, Says Director Bryan Singer
No need to cry a river, Marvel
Comics fans: There will be plenty of Storm in X-Men: Days of
Future Past!
Director Bryan Singer quashed
the rumors claiming Halle Berry’s character had been cut
from all but one scene of the
film. When Digital Spy tweeted
the X-Men exec, asking, “are
the rumors about Storm being
cut down to just 1 scene true?
:(,” he answered answered
bluntly, without wasting any
words, “No.”
The New York Daily News
claimed last week that Storm
“only has one line in the whole
movie,” and that Berry wasn’t
going to find this out until XMen: Days of Future Past hits
theaters in May. A source told
CCN this was “simply not true.”

hypotheses. He has worked in
labs at both Rutgers University
and Charles R. Drew University.
“I appreciate working alongside
like-minded individuals who are
there to help inspire me,” he
added. “It’s great to be able to
ask questions about science and
I love to hear about breaking discoveries—we are the very first to
receive all the information.”
As a child, Tiger harbored a fascination with insects and yearned
to be a scientist. “I knew I wanted
to be a scientist but I didn’t know
how to get there,” he recalls. In
2009, Tiger applied for the Louis
Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation and was accepted. The
program supports research activity and people interested in the
sciences.
“Science is always an evolving
field and I know I will never get
bored,” Tiger said, adding that he
is looking forward to making further strides in his chosen field. “I
recently applied for the PhD program in the Biomedical Sciences
as well as the Master’s Program
at California State University
at Los Angeles,” he said. “I am
awaiting acceptances so that I
can start in the fall.”

There’s also an exciting new short
film, co-written by Jimena and noted cinematographer Alfredo Estrada, coming your way later this
year. Directed by Ricardo Braojos, known as one of Mexico’s
best filmmakers, the story follows
a young jazz singer pursuing her
dreams, with sensual and passionate scenes, and an intriguing plot
twist. Assisting Braojos on this
project are photographers Esteban De Llaca and Miguel Bracho. The picture features a soundtrack
of songs from My Swing Moods,
and is currently in production. Jimena continues to reach new
fans, and she was prominently
featured in a recent issue of the
national music journal Hip Hop
Weekly along with Pop Couture
stars Beyonce, 2 Chainz, Ashton
Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, Nicci
Gilbert, Toni Braxton & Marc John
Jefferies. Social awareness is
also a central theme in Jimena’s life and career. Last year,
she joined the United Nations’
Say NO, Unite To End Violence
Against Women in Latin America
campaign. “I was very honored
to become part of this campaign,
to send a message around the
world to stop the violence,” Jimena
states. “Violence against women
in Latin America is a severe problem, and we shouldn’t be afraid
to say it out loud.” The program
encourages Latinas to stop the
cycle of abuse through education
and understanding that they can
get away from their abusers. Participating in the UN campaign is an
important part of Jimena’s professional life. “Women need to see
that there is a better life for them
out there.”

21, 1969, during a search-andclear mission near Tam Ky, South
Vietnam. He was a specialist 4
when his battalion tried to take a
hill fortified by Viet Cong and North
Vietnam Army soldiers. The Pentagon says he single-handedly silenced four Viet Cong bunkers.

According to his Medal of Honor
citation and supporting documents, the battle lasted 18 hours
and 11 men in his company were
killed and 33 others wounded.
The citation states that late in
the battle, Rodela “was the only
member of his company who was
moving and he began to run from
one position to the next, checking
for casualties and moving survivors into different positions in an
attempt to form a stable defense
line. Throughout the battle, in spite
of his wounds, Rodela repeatedly
exposed himself to enemy fire to
attend to the fallen and eliminate
an enemy rocket position.”
In an interview with the Army News
Service last December, he said
simply, “We trained for this and I
would have done it again.”
Morris of Cocoa, Fla., was a staff
sergeant during combat operations on Sept. 17, 1969, near Chi
Lang, South Vietnam. According
to the Pentagon, Morris led soldiers across enemy lines to retrieve his team sergeant, who had
been killed. He single-handedly
destroyed an enemy force hidden
in bunkers that had pinned down
his battalion. Morris was shot three
times as he ran with American casualties.
Morris received the Distinguished
Service Cross in April 1970. That
same month, he returned to Vietnam for his second tour.
“I never really did worry about
decorations,” Morris told The Associated Press last month. But
he said he fell to his knees when
he received the surprise call from
Obama with news that he was to
be honored.
Erevia, also of San Antonio, was
cited for courage while serving as
a radio-telephone operator on May
Scott, Douglas Storm, Martina
Sykes and Galen Williams.
The First National Tour begins
performances April 22, 2014 at
the Oriental Theatre in Chicago
before continuing to cities across
the country.
Directed by Charles RandolphWright, MOTOWN THE MUSICAL
is the true American dream story
of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s
journey from featherweight boxer
to the heavyweight music mogul
who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson,
Marvin Gaye and so many more.
Featuring more than 50 classic
hits such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t
No Mountain High Enough,” MOTOWN THE MUSICAL tells the
story behind the hits as Diana,
Smokey, Berry and the whole
Motown family fight against the
odds to create the soundtrack
of change in America. Motown
shattered barriers, shaped our
lives and made us all move to the
same beat.

the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that John Donahue be
appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of
the decedent.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under
the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will
allow the personal representative to take many actions without
obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important
actions, however, the personal representative will be required to
give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice
or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files
an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court
should not grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held on April 16, 2014 at 8:30
AM in Dept. No. 9 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA
90012.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be
in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the
personal representative appointed by the court within the later of
either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a
general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the
California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing
or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the
California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights
as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person
interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for
Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided
in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form
is available from the court clerk.

Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property
lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on
the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction
does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership
of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being
auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off
all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can
receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that
may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s
office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge
you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold
more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of
Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee,
Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of
the California Civil Code. The law requires that information
about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you
and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed,
