Welcome to fishing in
Vinje!
V
inje is the westernmost and largest
borough in the county of Telemark
– bigger than the county of Vestfold.
Hundreds of small and large lakes and
tarns cover a total area of 250 km2.
Vinje has three urban centres, Åmot,
Rauland and Haukeli/Edland. From the
low, forest-clad hills round Åmot, the

landscape spreads up towards the highest peaks on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The relatively calcareous bedrock means that the majority of lakes
and rivers in Vinje have been protected against the effects of acid precipitation,
which threatens inland fishing across the whole of south-eastern and southern
Norway. In most lakes, the fish are of good quality. With plenty of crustaceans
on their menu, the trout and char have lovely red flesh.
In this brochure, we demonstrate how easy it is to gain access to exciting and
varied fishing in the many lakes and rivers in Vinje throughout the year. Whether
you fish with a spoon bait, spinner, fly or worms, you will always find a place
where the conditions are ideal! For people who like fishing for char on the ice,
the large lakes are a source of extra food
and enjoyment all winter. In springtime,
the fishing is particularly good after
the ice breaks up, i.e. early in June.
Higher up in the mountains the ice will
usually remain until around 20 June and
often later. There is also a good fishing
season from July through to the end of
September.
For most people, fishing is about more
than stocking up the larder. People in
Vinje are proud of the combination of
nature and culture that makes this place
slightly different from anywhere else.

Everywhere you can see small traces of people who throughout the ages have
made use of the natural resources of the uncultivated land – in the past because
they had to. Today, anglers can enjoy travelling in a beautiful, often idyllic and
often dramatic landscape in varying light and weather, without needing to worry
about uncertain prospects of survival. And as for bringing wriggling, first-class,
raw ingredients for a princely meal straight out of the water, as people in Vinje
have done since the Stone Age, well,
that’s almost a luxury in our day and
age. For it is very important to treat
yourself to this proximity to nature. We
believe that this helps to create positive
attitudes towards the conservation of
nature and tradition. That makes it
easier for us to pass on these values to
those who come after us.
We offer you a warm welcome!
Good fishing!

The fish in Vinje
T
rout dominate in most of the lakes in Vinje. The trout populations can be
large, and the fish generally weigh between 200 and 400 grams. But it is not
uncommon to come across hidden tarns and lakes where the trout are fewer in
number, and therefore larger on average. Still, on the whole the fish are in good
condition, in the rivers, streams and lakes alike, with red, delicate flesh.
In the large reservoirs, the pelagic char have adapted so well to the changing
water levels that there are almost too many of them. This means that the fish are
relatively small, rarely weighing more than 100-200 grams. It has proved difficult
to ensure that the char fishing effectively improves the balance relative to the
food resources, but the small char are still tasty, have red flesh and are incredibly
popular amongst the many ice anglers who come each year from as far away as
Sweden and Finland. And occasionally someone catches a really massive char
weighing 2-3 kilos. That experience is worth a long journey!

Preparing and storing the fish
N
ot many things taste better than
fresh trout and char. Remember
to bring aluminium foil, some butter,
salt and pepper when you set out. You
will find the rest of what you need to
make a feast in nature’s own kitchen!
When you have cleaned and scraped
the fish, you season it with salt and
pepper, put a lump of butter in its cavity
and wrap it in the foil, with a sprig of
juniper if you like. Place the wrapped
fish on the embers of the fire for 10–30
minutes, depending on its size. Turn
it occasionally to ensure that it gets
cooked evenly. If you don’t have foil,
a damp newspaper can do the same job.
The method is the same. The fish can of
course be pan-fried or grilled over the
fire. Fresh fish tastes fantastic, almost
regardless of how you prepare it!

Trout and char of the highest quality.
Little tastes better than a newly caught
fish, whether it is fried in a pan or
grilled over a fire.
I
f you want to keep the fish for a while, you should find a cool place. Be
careful that the fish doesn’t come into contact with the earth, and thus with
harmful bacteria. A snowdrift, a marsh or a cold source of water can act
as a fridge for a few days.
Always wrap the fish up well before putting it aside like this!
Remember that you shouldn’t catch more fish than you need.
It’s better to put the fish back out!

Equipment and fishing tips
Fishing with spoon baits and spinners
Fishing with spoon baits and spinners is an effective approach throughout the spring, summer and autumn. It is also incredible fun when
you get a good bite! Most colour combinations can be used, and many
people have their own favourites. Red and copper, silver and red and
black and yellow are good combinations for the trout in Vinje. Wobblers
and herring baits can be real treats for the big trout and should be tried! 0.18–0.25
mm line allows relatively long casts. Spinners from 2-6 grams and spoon baits
from 4-12 grams are the usual sizes.
Fly-fishing
If you swear by flies, you also have countless places to try out, both with
a fly rod and a fly and float. Early in the season nymphs and mosquito
imitations can tempt the trout. Later, when the May flies start hatching,
you can go over to imitations of them. Then, when the caddis flies start
hatching, you can experience good fishing in the late summer evenings using
imitations such as Streaking caddis, Elk hair caddis, E12 and Goddard Sedge.
Other flies, such as Montana, Daddy longlegs and May fly and mosquito imitations
are good in most lakes. Fly and float fishing is sometimes effective. Two lures
ahead of the float is normal. Use floats that can be filled with gravel or lead, as
they allow long casts. A nine-foot rod is recommended for getting the flies far
ahead of the float. It is usual to use good traditional wet flies. Patterns that have
proved effective in Vinje include Black Gnat, Zulu, Zulu silver, March brown,
Telemarkskongen and Greenwell’s glory.
Fishing with worms
This traditional method of fishing still works well in most lakes and rivers.
Try both with and without a float. In rivers and streams, a worm with a
small lead sinker can really do the trick. Cast in waterfalls, behind stones
and in eddies, let the bait sink and reel it in carefully. The bite usually comes
suddenly, so stay alert! If you like dark August evenings, night fishing for trout
may be the thing for you. Here you draw a cluster of worms just below the surface
close to the shore. It can be totally dark, so when you hear a splash you must first
lower the rod for a few seconds, before reeling in.
6
- Fishing information for the Vinje district Ice fishing
When fishing for char it is normal to use various kinds of røyeblink (a type of
spoon bait). Most colours work, but red, white and copper are particularly good.
Some people also generally feed the fish with cheese, mushrooms, shrimp shells,
etc. a few days before going fishing. This means that the char gather round the
hole, and this can help you to get big catches. The trout is often harder to get on
the ice, but in late spring it is worth trying your luck. Marmooska jigs and worms/
maggots can be good choices for this. You should choose smaller spoons for the
trout, which are more easily frightened by the largest spoons.
Always remember ice picks, and stay far away from open channels. The spring
ice can be dangerous!
In Rauland you can hire equipment for ice fishing at the Rauland tourist office.

Fishing knots
A good knot is important to safeguard your catch. Who hasn’t experienced losing a big fish because the knot couldn’t withstand the monster? Remember to
check knots regularly, and moisten knots before you tighten them!
Trilene knot
The strongest and
best knot for spinners and spoons.
Some people use a clinch knot, but it
is nearly 40% weaker!
Blood knot
For joining lines.
The lines should be
of similar size.
Surgeon’s knot
A knot that can be
useful when you are
fishing with a fly and
float, and want the flies ahead of the
float.
Simple turtle knot
A knot to tie flies
to the leader with,
or to the line when
you are fishing with fly
and float.

Fishing is forbidden in two areas from 1 September to 31 October
inclusive. These are the area demarcated by the power line from
Brattland across Bernes to Lofthus and up the Tansåi to Tansosen,
and the area demarcated by a straight
line from Sporanes to Åmyri and up the
Bituåi as far as trout can run.
Fishing record: Pierre Aker took 1285
char in Totak in a single weekend!
“It was deep, but not too deep for me
to keep control. There were fish at all
depths and they often took the bait
before it reached the bottom. Fish after
fish came dancing onto the ice, often
two at a time. 1285 char caught by
one man in a single weekend must be
a record?”

Lognvikvatn, Tansvatn and Podden
These three lakes are situated between Austbø in Rauland and Øyfjell in the
south-east part of Vinje. They have been regulated and the deepest spot is 74 m
(off Fundlid in Lognvikvatn). The trout and char stocks are strong; mostly char
in Lognvikvatn. The fishing permit is valid for both rod and ice fishing. Access is
at Øygarden in the east, near Podden and several places along road 801 (Austbø
Øyfjell). You are also recommended to walk along the old track beside the lake
(Lognvikstrondi). These lakes are also suitable for canoeing and kayaking, and
when the discharge is normal a boat can be rowed between Lognvikvatn and
Tansvatn. On late, calm summer evenings you can see beavers out collecting
food.
PS: It is not allowed to use your own boat, if it has not been disinfected.
Lognvik District Fishing Association
Lognvik District Fishing Association manages the eastern part of Lognvikvatn
(see the map). It has boats and nets for hire in summer and reserved places for
ice fishing in winter. Nets must be hired from Torbjørn Berge. You must not use
your own nets.

Møsvatn
Møsstrond Landowner’s Association was set up in 1972 and currently has
46 members who control about 95% of the rights on and near this lake. Møsvatn
covers an area of 67 km2 and is an upland lake containing both trout and char.
Just over 10 tons of fish are caught each year, including those taken through
the ice. The Association sells fishing permits that are valid for practically all of
Møsvatn. The area not included is shown on a map where you can purchase the
permit. Char dominate the lake and in winter you can often take good catches
of tasty char. Swedes, Finns and Norwegians return year after year to fish here.
Rod fishing in summer can give fine catches of trout and char. You can use your
own boat and you are allowed to fish with rod from the boat. If you want to fish
with nets, you have to ask the landowners!

The owners of Vierli offer fishing in two lakes located about 1000 m a.s.l. There
is little vegetation around the lakes, and they are convenient for rod fishing. The
lakes have fine trout, mostly weighing about 0.5 kg.
Uvatn: Trout fishing in a small part of the lake. A boat or canoe can be hired at
the lake, which is 300 metres from Vierli Cafeteria.
Oksatjønn: Trout fishing in the whole lake, which is in the birch belt, thus making
it well suited for rod fishing. Large, good-quality fish, often more than 0.5 kg.
A boat can be hired. The lake is about 30 minutes walk from Vierli Cafeteria.
The permit for Uvatn is valid for the area shown on the map below. The permit
for Oksatjønn is valid for the whole lake.

Vinje
Vinje Landowner’s Association sells fishing permits for Vinjevatn, Våmarvatn
and many tarns in the district. All these lakes are located below the tree line in
varied wooded terrain. Vinjevatn and Våmarvatn have both char and trout, but
the tarns have only trout. The fish vary in size, but their quality is good in most
lakes. The average weight of trout in Langesæ is 0.4 kg and trout up to several
kilos are taken by rod every year in Våmarvatn. The largest fish caught with a rod
in Våmarvatn weighed all of 9.5 kg! Most of the other tarns have good-quality,
well-sized, red trout. Rod fishing from land is good in all the tarns.

Tveitevatn
Tveiten Fishermen’s Association offers trout fishing in Tveitevatn (525 m a.s.l.),
which extends from Grungevatn to Edland. This nutrient-rich lake contains several
strains of trout, making it attractive for both ice fishing and fishing in summer.
The lake is only 20 m deep at its deepest. Otter-board fishing is forbidden. You

Welcome to Vågslid
and Haukelifjell
-with a fishing rod in your hand!
The Vågslid Landowner’s Association
welcomes you to fish in the area it
oversees at Vågslid and Haukelifjell.
About 70 lakes and tarns are located in
the area covered by the fishing permit,
and they are in mountainous terrain at
800-1600 m a.s.l. extending over more
than 130 km².
Photo: Halvor Vinje
The area offers some of the best fishing
in the mountains of southern Norway, particularly for those willing to walk a
bit in easy, beautiful terrain. Paths have been cleared and marked, bridges and
simple footbridges repaired, and cultural heritage remains restored. The main
road also runs beside a 20 km long
stretch of river and lakes that offer
excellent fishing.
Many of the lakes in the area have been
regulated, which means that several tens
of thousands of fish fry are released
there each year. Really big trout are
caught in many lakes every year.

Storheller
Storheller is a mountainous area in the north-western part of Vinje. It covers
62.5 km2 and extends from the north end of Songavatn to the border of the
county of Hordaland. Previously, the area was mostly used for grazing, and
there were 14 shelters where shepherds could sleep at night. These were in
places where there was not only good grazing, but also good hunting and
fishing.
The approximately 15 large and small lakes, situated 1000–1200 m a.s.l.,
contain fine trout. Several of the lakes have boats. Three well-equipped huts
are available for renting, and these contain all you need for your stay, including
wood for heating, propane gas for cooking and solar panels to provide lighting.
In addition, two of the shelters have been renovated to provide basic accommodation for 2 or 3 people.
It is allowed to fish from the bank and from a boat with a rod. When you rent a
cabin, you can use a boat for free.
Otter board fishing is allowed. For net fishing you have to ask the landowners!
You can hire a boat for Lake Songa to get to the cabins. Price 700,- NOK for one
week without petrol (ca. 5,20 m, 20 hp).

Berunuten West
Berunuten vest is an area in the mountains north of Songavatn owned by Vinje
Borough Council. It covers about 90 km2 and is situated between 900 and
1400 m a.s.l. Angling, small game hunting and the 7 huts spread over the property
are available to everyone. About 15 lakes have trout stocks of moderate to good
quality. Some have large, splendid fi sh, whereas a few contain too many fish,
which are therefore fairly small. The usual size is from 0.2 to 1 kg. In addition
to these lakes, the River Songa and its associated lakes bordering onto Hardangervidda have many fine fishing spots that can provide good catches of excellent trout. All these lakes are in open, upland terrain, and are therefore well suited
for all kinds of rod fishing. There is only birch wood along the River Songa and
Lake Songa.
Vinje welcomes you to a fantastic area. Good fishing!

The Vinje branch of the Hardangervidda Landowner’s Cooperative is trying to get
as many members as possible to belong to a scheme of joint fishing permits.
The following privately and publicly owned properties have joined so far: Storheller,
Berunuten vest, Austre Vollane, Mogen, Li and various small properties in and
around Bitdal, as well as Rauland Statsallmenning.
All the lakes carry only trout, and almost all are situated above the tree line.
The fish usually bite best in late summer, but may bite well just after the
ice breaks up. Their size varies from lake to lake, but most lakes have
good-quality fish. The lakes above Mogen deserve special mention since
they are among the best on the whole of Hardangervidda. If you are
lucky, fish weighing a kilogram or even more will sit on your hook.
IMPORTANT: During the reindeer hunting (from 20. Aug) is fishing in
some areas not desirable – especially in the area Austre (eastern) and

Argehovd
Argehovd Farm (1000 m a.s.l.), at the north end of Møsvatn, has the following
to offer:
Trout fishing in the River Kvenna
This river, which is protected from development, has large trout that feed on char
in Møsvatn. Normally, the fish in the river weigh 0.2 to 2 kg, but trout as big as
7 kg have been taken by rod. The fishing permit covers about 10 km of the
river.
Three lakes of varying size, Urdevatn, Midttjønn and Skartjønn, lie west of the
Kvenna at a height of 1100 to 1300 m a.s.l., and they only contain extremely
good-quality trout. They normally weigh 0.5 to 1 kg. You need to rent a hut to
be able to fish these and several other good lakes in the area. Boat transport and
accommodation can be arranged.
The permit for the Kvenna can be bought at Argehovd and Mogen Tourist Hut.
