The Chisholm Community Foundation (CCF), an affiliate of Minnesota Philanthropy Partners, is a permanent, philanthropic endowment for the enduring benefit of our community. It secures, manages and allocates investors’ gifts for charitable purposes in the Chisholm and Balkan areas, working to improve the quality of life for local residents. We have awarded approximately $840,000 in grants to various organizations in and around our community. With a history of philanthropic success, the Chisholm Community Foundation stands as a beacon among small community foundations in Minnesota—something of which we are very proud! The CCF is searching for citizens interested in serving on its board. A brief overview of the Foundation and board responsibilities is listed below. The Advisory Board meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m. at the CCF office. It is anticipated that all board members attend nine of the twelve meetings that take place throughout the year—one of which is the Annual Investors Meeting. Information discussed at meetings is e-mailed in advance, thus allowing time for review prior to meetings. Meetings usually adjourn by 5:30 p.m. Board members are also expected to participate on one or more committees, usually according to their areas of expertise. In addition, board members are actively involved in fundraising events, public speaking opportunities and other activities that promote the Foundation. Members may serve two three-years terms—a total of six years. The nominations committee continually accepts applications and nominations for the CCF Advisory Board. Anyone interested in applying for a board position can call or stop by the CCF office for an application. Applications are also posted on our website at chisholmcommunityfoundation.com. Feel free to contact the office at 218-254-1101 with questions or for additional information. Chairman of the Board Report Greetings Fellow Investors! “...together we can do so much.” It’s Saturday morning, April 6, 2013. It’s not April Fool’s Day, but as I sit at my desk and look outside at three inches of fresh snow, I have to wonder! On the one hand, it is beautiful and clean; on the other, I am ready for summer! Our Foundation is embarking on another year of some new and challenging endeavors. As you know, we started a scholarship program where we will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships—one to a male and one to a female student from Chisholm High School. These scholarships are made possible by your investment in the CCF. Education is the future of our community. Please consider supporting your new scholarship program with the CCF. ture of Chisholm. We have met and will continue to meet with these organizations to come up with innovative ideas on how to grow the CCF and our schools and community. Keyboard Liquor Holiday Wine Tasting Festival Paul & Suzi Ruper, owners of Keyboard Liquor, hosted the fifth annual Holiday Wine Tasting Festival on December 6, 2012 at Valentini’s Supper Club. Eight wine distributors provided over 40 different wines for sampling. An elegant buffet of hors d’oeuvres created by Valentini’s complimented the wines. The 90 people who attended the event were treated to some festive music provided by the Ivo Trio Jazz Band. Proceeds from the event, $2,435, were donated to the Chisholm Community Foundation. CCF Advisory Board members assisted the Rupers throughout the evening. Thanks for your support, Paul & Suzi. The history of volunteerism in the United States has been abundant since its inception. The first pioneers began volunteering as a way to survive while helping their community meet the many challenges that came with relocation. It is believed that philanthropy began in these early days and has continued to grow throughout history. In 1736, Benjamin Franklin started the very first firehouse. The City of Chisholm still benefits from this system today. The religious rejuvenation of the Great Awakening period in the 1830’s inspired people to get involved with religious and relief programs. In the early 1800’s, the YMCA was started. The Red Cross was established in 1881. During this period, many still recognized charities had their start. In the 20th century, the mainstream organizations really began to take off. In the early 1900’s, such organizations as the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Kiwanis were formed in short order. At this time, organizations were being established with the sole purpose of helping other organizations find their way. Volunteerism was seen throughout America in every region. Soup kitchens sprang up during the Great Depression, churches were opening their doors to the homeless—all staffed by volunteers. In the 1930’s, environmentalism found a way into the spectrum with the Conservation Corps planting approximately three million trees in a single decade. During WWII, most volunteer organizations needed to work to support both emotionally and physically the needs of servicemen and civilians. And in the 1960’s, volunteerism focused more on a political spectrum, a liberal one against poverty, inequity and violence around the world. The history of volunteerism in America is in a constant evolution. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the new generation is still compelled to cherish philanthropic efforts. These efforts, however, may center on environmentalism, equality regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation and animal welfare, just to name a few. We have been blessed to have such a strong network of volunteerism in the community of Chisholm. Throughout the community, you can find many ways to make a difference. Volunteering does not always require physical labor; it could be offering to do taxes or books for a volunteer organization or grocery shopping and delivering food for the elderly. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone chose at least one organization to volunteer in? Please consider volunteering on the Chisholm Public School Foundation board. We are always looking for new ideas, fresh perspectives and ambitious people to help make this fund prosper. If you are unable to give your time, consider investing in the Chisholm Public School Foundation. All grants awarded go directly to making a difference in a child’s life in Chisholm. Cost for a hole sponsorship is $75.00— a custom made sign with your name and/or your business will be placed on the course—it’s a great way to advertise.
