Amarillo SPCA News This month we celebrate our senior furry Winter 2015 Amarillo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Visit us at: Amarillo SPCA 11901 S. Coulter Street Amarillo, TX 79119 806-622-0555 friends. We encourage everyone to consider adopting one of these gems and offering them the retirement they deserve. Seniors are usually overlooked at shelters even though they are often calm, gentle, loving, trained pets that know a lifetime of giving love. Starting this past spring we have expanded our attempts to find forever homes for our older dogs and cats (including old timers and long-termers at the shelter). We also received two donations for targeted senior advertising /promotion purposes to assist with our efforts. Thank you! We are thrilled to report that dogs Q-Ball, Tubbs, Belle, Bart, Homer, Sweetie, Blue and Katie found their forever families. Thank you to those that helped in finding the right match, and those that gave these adult dogs the homes and love they deserve. We still have fabulous adult dogs and cats who are older (5+ years old) or ‘Diamonds in the Rough’ who may have a few special needs and are waiting on their forever homes. Come visit them! Here’s a couple of special stories of our seniors retiring in style! Tubbs, a 9 year old Lab mix, was adopted late spring at one of our PetSmart Saturday events. This wonderful couple from Oklahoma already had an older dog, Millie, and wanted Tubbs as a friend and companion to their dog. Within a couple of weeks of taking Tubbs home, we received several pictures of Tubbs living the good life. Our shelter employees and volunteers were very excited for Tubbs and his new family. Bart and Homer, adopted in September, had been with the shelter since puppyhood and finally amarillospca@ amaonline.com www.amarillospca.net Shelter hours: Tuesday-Saturday 12-5p Also at PetSmart®: cats are available during business hours; dogs available Saturday 1-5p found their home at 10 (approx) year’s of age. Here’s how they are settling in. “Over the last month Bart and Homer have adapted well to their new home. During the first few days neither one wanted to eat very much, however that was due to the children feeding them an overabundance of dog treats. Bart and Homer typically enjoy being outside, although the yard is not extremely large they have created themselves a little sleeping area under some of the trees and can be found there most days. As their spirits have risen and they have become more comfortable with their new environment, even these two old men can be found to be running around playing in the yard. They have also adapted very well to the house rules typically indicating the need to go outside and relieve themselves and using their own beds at night. As Homer and Bart’s appetite returned to normal we have learned that, although Homer will eat in one spot, Bart must move his bowl all over and enjoys leaving it mostly in the primary walking paths around the house. Overall, Bart and Homer seem to be happy and enjoying their new home and family.” Mr. & Mrs. Rice Microchipping- $30 At the shelter Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5p Jinxy Cat-Travaganza! In November and December we ar e offer ing cat adoptions at a special price of $85!! At that rate, why not adopt two (or three!)? Jinxy is one of many beautiful cats waiting for a loving home to call her own. As you can see Jinxy (left) has regal markings and is a class-A snuggler! Perfect for those cold winter nights coming up. She is also declawed and won’t hurt your furniture. Really, what more could you ask for?! More loveable pets on pages 2 & 5. 1 Can I come home with you? You can also find pictures of our pets on facebook, petango.com, petfinder.com and Amarillospca.net. More pets located on page 5. It was their first ever Homes for Dogs National Pet Adoption Weekend and we were asked to join them in promoting the event locally. We were able to place 10 dogs that weekend from both PetSmart and the shelter. They have committed to help find homes for 20,000 dogs through a partnership with Adopt-aPet.com. They created a fun YouTube commercial to promote their campaign. Thank you for choosing us! Dylan F., from Mrs. Ferguson’s class at Green- ways Intermediate 5th grade CIA class, encouraged others to donate to the Amarillo SPCA. The response was great and they delivered many bags of supplies to us. A big thanks to Dylan for his idea and making it happen. A Bushland Middle School class held a musical fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the Amarillo SPCA. The event was the evening of May 14th and several of our SPCA Board Members attended the fun presentation. The goal was to raise $2,000 and they achieved $1,120 with ticket sales, art and DVD sales. The teacher said a grandparent of one of her students would put in the additional $880 to meet their goal. As shown, a check was presented to two of our Board members, just before school was out for the summer. We truly appreciate the hard work the teacher and her students put into the event and for the wonderful donation to the shelter. One day in September, these two young ladies operated a lemonade stand and brought their earnings to donate to the Amarillo SPCA. Iris H. and Hanna L. are pictured here with our Shelter Manager Debra, as they presented their $57.50 to help our dogs and cats. A big thanks for their thoughtfulness. LET’S EAT! Both On the Border and Texas Roadhouse par ticipated in a Give Back night where a portion of meal proceeds was donated to our shelter. On the Border hosted on September 25 for both lunch and dinner and Texas Roadhouse hosted October 26 donating a portion of dinner proceeds. Thanks to everyone that came out to eat and support us, as well as thanks to these great restaurants for recognizing our cause! Bed Time! Our gratitude to A big THANKS to Amarillo PetSmart for their donations of canned dog food after the 3day PetSmart National Charities Adopt-a-thon in May. We received approximately 500 cans of dog food that their customers donated for the shelter. Then in September after their 3day event, they gave us several boxes of canned dog and cat food for our shelter. All donations were from their customers for PetSmart Adoption Partners. We want to thank PetSmart and PetSmart customers for these donations. Sadie D. sold bracelets and held a bake sale to support the Amarillo SPCA. Here she is with the proceeds of her efforts to help our cats and dogs at the shelter. Big thanks to Sadie. We appreciate the giving heart. 3 Vanissa B. for taking on the renovation of, and purchase of, some beds for our big dog runs. We are always needing elevated dog beds. Vanissa did the leg work and volunteers Trevor and Brady did much of the labor. It has taken many hours of labor and love, but our dogs will be so grateful for a nice bed to sleep on during the cold winter nights. SPAY and NEUTER your pets! We received a grant designated toward low cost spays and neuters and are offering vouchers to the Amarillo area until the funds are used. Join us in preventing unwanted puppies and kittens and help us lessen the number of euthanizations at kill shelters. The numbers are heartbreaking! If your pet hasn’t been sterilized, please stop by the shelter and purchase a voucher or call us for more information. Vouchers can only be used at Lone Star Veterinary Services. Here’s some of our Muttfest winners: Muttfest 2015, Bark Trek, took us to new frontiers as the 21st fund- raiser of Amarillo SPCA filled Memorial Park with happy canines and their human partners. Our partners, 100.9, the Eagle, provided music and a live remote; Party Stop offered various spirits, delicious sandwiches were found at Rudy's Country Store and Barbeque, Lone Star Veterinary provided low cost vaccinations, plus services from several local groomers made the event an out of this world success! There were flying saucers in the form of Skyhoundz Disc competition and an auction filled with much sought after items. Dog Contests culminated the journey with many happy and talented contestants. Plans are under way for the next Muttfest to be held May 15, 2016 at Memorial Park. Lana G. was the winner of the $250 Visa Cash Card. Marissa F. won the Apple iPad Air 32GB. Poodle I am always amazed and surprised with the outcome of our annual garage sale! This year we had to battle some evening showers but the daytime heat was not too much of a problem. Thanks to all who donated items they no longer needed and to those who came and shopped. Nobody went away empty handed! So many people are responsible for making the sale happen. I can’t begin to thank everyone in this space but Shannon Lamb was again our angel who was overseeing the entire operation. She worked tirelessly for many weeks getting everything displayed. Kathy was invaluable in getting things priced and ready to go and our sales crew worked very hard with very little time to rest. Mark your calendar for July 8 and 9, 2016, and start saving those “treasures” now! - Peggy Tredway, Coordinator FIDO Friendly Magazine spon- Mrs. RB brought a group of 5th graders in the Gifted and Talented pr ogr am with AISD to visit our shelter in July. Students Max, Ivan, Didier, Canon and Kimberly were doing a PSA project and chose the SPCA as their topic. They brought their iPads to make a video during their facility tour and interviewed a couple Amarillo SPCA folks.. They got to love on some cats and dogs while spending about an hour at the shelter. We were pleased to show them around and help them with their project. We hope they enjoyed learning about Amarillo SPCA. sored the 7th annual Get Your Licks on Route 66 event, stopping in Amarillo Wednesday, September 23. It was part of their cross country pet adoption tour which stops at cities along Route 66 and promotes rescue pet adoptions and supports local pet shelters. There were lots of fun prizes, giveaways and pets for adoption. Lucky Trivette and Charlie found their forever home at the event. (right) Special thanks to Tripp’s HarleyDavidson for hosting this event for us at their I-40 location. Route 66 Grills & Grills Festival on 6th Street was held June 20, 2015. Hope you stopped by to see us at our table near the NAT. We appreciated the donations received and were happy to promote the SPCA at this fun day of cars and burgers. PetSmart National Adoption Weekend is November 13, 14, 15. We’ll be there; will you? 4 READER’S CORNER Volunteer Spotlight! “Dogs in Cars” by Lara Jo Regan Meet Jesse Romo; one of our wonderful shelter volunteers! Jesse has a fondness for cats and enjoys making sure our shelter cats are happy and feel at ease while they stay with us. He is involved in their general care, including feeding, cleaning cages & litter boxes, giving them love and working on any chores that may come up during his visit. He believes it’s important to come to ‘work’ in a positive state of mind as animals react accordingly to your behavior and emotions. “Unlikely Loves” by Jennifer Holland Francesco Marciuliano “I Could Pee on This; and Other Poems by Cats” by “Say That Again: A Little Girl's Love. A Dog's Courage” by N. Gemini Sasson “Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca” by Maria Goodavage “Cats and Daughters: They Don’t Always Come When Called” by Helen Brown Besides being a volunteer, Jesse enjoys photography, reading, aircraft and being with his kitties. He has a 12 year old cat named Duke L. Gato and a one year old cat with a deformed right paw named Bella No! He finds they create a relaxing environment and appreciates how they always know when you need a bit of extra attention. “Old Faithful: Dogs of a Certain Age” by Pete Thorne “Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World” by Vicki Myron and Bret Witter We’re looking for the perfect home. Is yours it?! He has been with us about two years and finds time to come 20-25 hours a month. If you happen to see Jesse when you come out to select a new cat friend, he will advise you to let it come naturally. You and your future pet will most likely make an immediate connection. Most importantly, he would like to remind pet owners that you are committing to being a forever pet parent….not just until they take up too much of your time. Thanks for your hard work! We now offer a discounted adoption rate of $85.00 to Seniors 65 years of age and over, and to Veterans/Military, both with proper ID. Yes, animals have coats, but that doesn’t make them suited to withstand harsh winter elements. If exposed for an extended period of time, they get hypothermia and frostbite just like us. If an animal absolutely won’t or can’t come indoors they must be provided with a dry, draft-free enclosure that is raised off the ground to protect them from the elements. Check everyday to make sure the drinking water has not frozen and their bedding is dry. Plus: KIBBLES PRESTON Clean paws after being outdoors. Salt and chemical deicers can irritate paws. Heavy snow and ice covering foot pads could make them limp and or cause frostbite. Keep pets dry. Once their fur gets wet, it loses its insulating abilities. Purchase a heated water dish. Fresh water is essential. DAISY A tiny amount of antifreeze can be dangerous. Wipe any spills immediately and wash paws that may have stepped in the solution. 5 Memorials & Honorariums In memory of William Wallace -John and Carol Blakley In memory of Tabby In memory of Earl Banick -Peggy Higgins In memory of Alene Goodman -Region 16 Education Service Center In memory of Lou Ellen Morris -Jerry and Mary Clark In memory of our precious Lolafaye (dog) -Linda and Lester Crow In honor of Peyton Williams’ Birthday -Lauren Williams In memory of Teenie Crider -Carla Hardt In memory of Munich and Berlin, beloved Dobermans of James and Whitney Koch -Carolyn Hudnell In memory of Chili Stokes -D. Larger dog breeds are seniors at a younger age. As they age, they may sleep more, have thinner fur and their hearing may not be as sharp. It’s important to watch for changes in health, behavior, diet and exercise and discuss your pet’s care at regular vet visits. Our dogs and cats use LOTS of supplies and we often run short on many items. Your generosity in keeping our animals fed and cared for is greatly appreciated. We have a crucial need for the following items: Quality dog and cat food (such as Iams, Purina One) Newspapers (or large rolls of nonglossy paper) Always needed….. Cat litter (clumping) Paper towels Laundry detergent Dryer sheets Bleach Small blankets Towels (new or used) Lowe’s gift cards Walmart gift cards Trash bags (52 gallon size and tall kitchen) Collars and leashes Dog beds Can’t decide? We greatly appreciate Cash Donations to purchase items we have not received. Last but not least, we always need more hands on assistance— Volunteer! 1-Regular exercise can help your pet live longer and healthier. 2-Set a tooth brushing routine (with pet toothpaste) to prevent professional cleanings that require anesthesia. 3-Comfort needs. Older pets don’t regulate body heat as easily and may need to be kept warmer. 4-Provide proper nutrition. There may be diet changes in a senior pet such as needing more frequent feedings due to digestive issues. Typically a senior formula food is suggested. 5-Consult your vet. They can advise you on the appropriate care and treatments for your pet’s personal needs. Information provided by National ASPCA. Calendar of Activities (Some dates TBD.
