The Academy of Magical Arts, aka The Magic Castle was established in 1963.
Fred and I have lived within a 2-hour drive of the castle during the entire time of its
existence, yet neither one of us have had the pleasure of spending a “magical
night” at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. We have heard all the glowing comments
about what an extraordinary experience it is to partake in all the magic shows with
their illusions, to admire the incredible architecture, furniture, and accessories that
adorn every nook of the building, to enjoy dining in an atmosphere of Victorian elegance, and to dress up in your finery of coats and ties for the gentlemen and dresses for the ladies.
Peter had hosted members of CCSB in a prior visit, but we had been unable to attend at that date, so we did not want to miss this opportunity. Saturday, October
24 Peter Mackins escorted Dave and Deb Hanks, Tony and Paula Megowan,
and Fred and Sharon Smith to the venue. Bob and Ivy Aanderud met us there.
With Halloween just a week away the ambiance of the mysterious was amped up
even more than normal and their use of wispy spidery webs was done to perfection.
Peter gave us a quick walking tour of the premises showing us the location of the
various rooms where the magic occurs. Part of the magic for me was to be able to
find my way back successfully to where we started from. Peter’s enthusiasm for all
things magic was contagious and it did not take long for us all to become immersed
in what we were seeing or not seeing as it were.
Prior to dinner we had choices of the Close-Up Gallery and the Parlour of Prestidigitation to begin our evening’s entertainment. The rooms are very intimate with limited seating which allows you to be close to the performing magician. However
even if you were in the row closest to the stage you still were clueless as to how
they managed to outsmart you. It gave us all plenty to talk about during dinner.

We had an 8:00 PM seating for dinner, and I felt like I was at Downton Abbey with
all the excellent wait staff that attended to our every need at dinner. You really did
feel like you had been carried back to a different time period. The lighting throughout the castle is dimmed and strategically placed to intensify the feeling of mystery
and intrigue. If dinner felt like Downton Abbey, then the bar areas, and parlours felt
like being in the early 1900’s.

After dinner we attended the 10:00 PM show in The Palace of Mystery. There were
three magicians at that show and again they were amazing. Ask Deb Hanks about
how she outwitted one of the magicians and made $5 doing so. After the main
show we once again returned to the Parlour of Prestidigitation for our last magician
of the evening at the 11:15 PM show. He personally amazed me as he had his
shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows so he certainly was not hiding anything in his
sleeves.
Thank you to Peter for allowing us to escape reality for a few hours and enter the
world of magic, mystery, and the pleasures of a bygone era.

Let me begin by saying thank you. First I would like to thank the Aanderuds, the
Franks, the Megowans, and the Smiths for allowing me to host them at the Magic Castle
the Saturday before last. The only thing that was better than the food and the shows
was the company of good friends. Secondly I would like to thank everyone who responded to my request for input on your likes and where you feel improvements could
be made in the Club. I did receive a number of responses and a lot of good ideas. I’ll
be taking to heart those things over which I have direct control and sharing the rest with
those who have the responsibility over other areas. Please understand that not all of
your suggestions can be implemented. In some cases to implement the suggestion
from one person would be the opposite of what another person desired. Even if your
idea is not implemented I valued your input and it is being considered. Finally, please
know I am always open to your suggestions even without the prompting of a questionnaire. At any time you can send suggestions to me or just give me a call.
Tony Megowan is organizing a planning meeting for the 2016 events and runs. He was looking at the week
after the November meeting and I have offered my place as the venue. If you would like to attend you all are
welcome. Tony will have the specifics soon and I will announce them at the meeting and either he or I will be
putting out an email with that information. If you cannot make it but have ideas or suggestions please send
them to me or to Tony.
One upcoming event will be the annual Christmas Dinner Party December 5th again at Mulligans. I will have
a sign-up sheet and more details at the meeting.
As most of you know, prior to September 11, 2001 the only attack within the continental United States took
place just north of Santa Barbara when, a Japanese submarine shelled a pier near Ellwood during WWII.
Though damage was minimal, it did have the effect of triggering a West Coast invasion scare. With that
background I’m very pleased to announce that Fred Lopez will be speaking at the November meeting on the
Marine Corps Air Station that existed at Santa Barbara during WWII. As you know Fred has had a distinguished military career and brings that as well a wealth of knowledge to share.
I’m looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday November 2nd at 6:30 at the Mesa Cafe.

A 20 Day Journey for Sandy and Pat - Fast Cars and Wild Animals
Day 1 Santa Barbara Air Bus at 5:30 AM, for a flight to Atlanta, GA and a rental car, sadly not a Vette.
Day 2 A visit to the wonderful Georgia Aquarium - huge and the displays are well done.
Next on the schedule was the Panoz Plant outside of Atlanta. We wanted to visit after Jerry LoMonaco brought one of their beautiful cars to a past club meeting and talked about
their history . We arrived 20 minutes after the showroom closed for the day but were graciously invited inside and given a private tour of the facility. There was a car there with
UCSB plates. It is a small world. The day ended in Lake Norman, NC.
Day 3 The weather forecast was dismal and it was raining but NASCAR fans always hope
the skies will clear for a race. A trip to the Sam Bass Gallery was eventful. We talked to
Sam while he autographed prints and we looked at his great artwork. The rain continued
but we went to the Charlotte Speedway still hoping there would be a race. Umbrellas are
not allowed inside the gate so as you can imagine
we were drenched in no time but still visiting the pit
area. The Mariano’s graciously arranged for us to have access to
the Speedway Club where we ate, shopped, and even talked and got
autographs from a WW2 Vet and Bobby Allison. We were wet but happy. The race was finally canceled at 7 PM and postponed to the next
day but the best was yet to come for us. There are several pedestrian
bridges to the parking area and we “luckily” took the wrong one. Dripping wet and Sandy's shoes filled with water, Pat not convinced where
the car was parked, asked a driver of one of the motorized carts coming
our way the direction of the VIP parking area. The man smiled and
asked if we wanted a ride there. Sandy looked at him and said
“CARL??” Sure enough it was Carl Edwards. For those not familiar
with NASCAR, he is among the elite drivers and as you might expect
very nice. He said he was just driving around for fun instead of sitting in
his motor home. The parking lot was filled with cars all trying to get out
to the street and at one point Carl asked a woman if she could back up
a little so we could squeeze through between two steel posts. She said
no because cars were behind her and then looked at him and said
“CARL??” Her next words were “How much room do you need?”. After
we got to our car and thanked him, Carl took a selfie of the three of us.
We sat in our car and just laughed after he left - quite a unique experience. Yes, we are now Carl fans and wished him luck.
Day 4 The rain moved out of the area and the race was on. We were sorry not to have seen a night race
and our favorite drivers didn't win but it was fun just to be there.
Day 5 With the race delayed a day our race shop schedule had to be revised . We only visited StewartHaas, JR Motorsports, Penske, Kasey Kayne, and Martin Truex Jr. We went to Kannapolis to the Dale Earnhardt Tribute Plaza where a 9 ft. statue of the legend is featured. We also stopped at the stadium of the Kannapolis Intimidators, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and founded by Dale Earnhardt Sr. Baseball season was over but it was a good photo opportunity. We went to the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame
in Mooresville before calling it a day.
Day 6 Michael Waltrip Racing is closing at the end of this season so we didn't want to miss stopping . It is a
very nice facility and sad that many people will lose their jobs. A visit to Hendrick Motorsports in Charlotte
was a must. It is huge with several buildings including a museum. Their current four famous drivers are featured beautifully with special tributes to Jeff Gordon who is retiring from racing. Rick Hendrick owns many
(some say 72) dealerships in 12 states and covering almost all car brands.

The next stop was the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte - so much
to see and so little time. Flooding had occurred around the Columbia
area so after listening to the news reports we skipped a planned Wilmington stop and went directly to Myrtle Beach, SC where we had a
great beachfront hotel room waiting for us. We walked around the
Broadway at the Beach area before calling it a night. Tourist season
is over so it was very peaceful.
Day 7 A stop at Darlington had to be skipped but we did have a great
experience riding in a NASCAR race car at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. Pat had quite a time getting in and out thru the window of the
car but with very kind and patient instructions she was able to do it. The next stop was Charleston with a
horse drawn carriage ride thru the historic district. Ellwood was our horse and our driver truly seemed to care
for the animals telling us how humane they are treated. The USS Yorktown is an aircraft carrier/museum at
Patriots Point and a very interesting self guided tour.
Day 8 Moving on to Savannah, GA with a stop at the Magnolia Plantation viewing trees, alligators and buildings. A walking ghost tour was in store for the night complete with stories of former house occupants of the
homes and park where ghosts now haunt.
Day 9 Continuing south to St Augustine, FL where we went to Castillo de San Marcos, America's oldest masonry fort (300 years.) An x-rated pirate ship/show was an evening adventure on the Black Raven in the bay
(Sandy loves pirates) Yes, it was raunchy and it is amazing what some people will do after having a couple of
drinks for beads (No, not us.)
Day 10 A trip to Marineland and swimming with a dolphin in 14 ft of water was
incredible and the trip highlight for us although Sandy said it almost tied with
the Carl Edwards connection. Dolphins are so intelligent and sweet. We
kissed, fed and touched our dolphin. Driving on to Daytona, where biker week
was in full swing (over 100,000 bikes) The drive on the beach included a stop
so Sandy could stick her toes in the Atlantic. We drove to Kissimmee where
Pat has a timeshare and stayed there for the next week (so nice not having to
pack up each night)
Day 11 We drove to Tampa for a scheduled tour of Big Cat Rescue which is just that. The caretakers are
very caring and love their beautiful animals who will spend the rest of their days enjoying life after being rescued from some sad conditions. The afternoon was spent at Busch Gardens including a private tour of their
Behind the Scenes Animal Care Center. Pat watches Wildlife Docs every Saturday AM so she was excited
to see their well equipped facility.
Day 12 Universal day which was very crowded. It is “fall break” in the area. We did ride the Harry Potter
train, drink Butter Beer, which is not beer at all, and went on a few rides with
shorter lines.
Day 13 A return to Busch Gardens for the Serengeti Safari tour which is highly
recommended. The giraffes come right up to the open bed truck and we all
had a chance to touch and feed them. The animals are free to roam and we
were impressed at how friendly all the employees were. They seemed to genuinely care about the animals as well as making our visit the best as possible.
Day 14 A second day visit to Universal proved much less crowded and easier to get around and enjoy.

Day 15 Disney World's Epcot was scheduled for the Wine and Food Festival & a concert by Fuel whose
songs were featured in Scream 3 and Godzilla. Sandy had escargot (not Pat)
Day 16 A visit to the Clearwater Aquarium where the Dolphin Tale movies were filmed and then a late afternoon visit to Pier 60 where we shopped and took pictures of the sunset from the pier.
Day 17 A long 600 mile drive from Kissimmee FL to Birmingham, AL was in store with scheduled
stops every two hours to break it up. One stop was the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala. Three
buildings are filled with drag racing and classic cars. Photos can't do this place justice. We also stopped at
Earnhardt Jr's dealership in Tallahassee where a rep from Hendrick talked to us and gave us souvenirs while
we looked at Dale Jr's beautiful 2007 custom truck.
Day 18 Race day at Talladega. We left on an hour motor coach ride
to the track at 7 AM and had pit passes including interviews with several drivers (Earnhardt Jr., Rusty Wallace, Kyle Bush, Kyle Larsen
and Chase Elliot.) Sandy got the peace sign from Kyle Petty when
he saw her taking his picture during the pre-race show. The race had
a very controversial ending with a new rule change and many spectators were unhappy including us because Dale Jr. had a chance to
win. Kyle Petty drove one of the many Plymouth and winged car classics that circled the track as a tribute to Buddy Baker. Our seats
were high with a view of almost the entire 2 ½ mile track. We were
amazed by the 1000's of campers/tents outside of the track for the
weekend activities.
Day 19 A rainy day for parts of the trip back to Atlanta. Sandy photographed falls colors along the way.
Sandy photographs everything, even a parked car covered with yellow leaves!
Day 20 Breakfast at hotel before returning the car and heading to the airport for trip home at 12:30 pm.
Sandy was in charge of finding interesting places to eat/drink and she did a great job. Included:
The Varsity in Atlanta – the world's largest drive-in restaurant serving people since 1928.
Whiskey River in Charlotte, owned by Earnhardt Jr. and we were there for fan appreciation night.
Brickhouse Tavern in Davidson, Tony Stewart part owner – more of a sports bar than a car theme

It was a fantastic trip thanks to “Daisy” our GPS girlfriend who does not like parking lots or roundabouts. We
got used to her recalculating and always came through when Pat messed up. Sandy did an incredible job in
deciphering Daisy's directions. We were tired but it was a wonderful and unforgettable 2700 miles.
Hib was happy to have his wife home safe and sound and Pat had her four legged Toby waiting for her.

website recently now is a good time to visit.

It has been redesigned and looks much more polished than the previous version. Everything seems to be in the same places but you may
have to look at a drop down or two to find what you are looking for. It is
much improved.
You will notice on page 6 that there is a full page ad for Bunnin Chevrolet here in Santa Barbara. Bunnin has come on board with a full
page ad for a full year thanks to Fred Lopez who made contact with the
dealership and worked out the details. We welcome Bunnin to our
newsletter pages. Thank you Fred
For those not familiar with Bunnin, you should really drop by and say
hello. Let them know you are from the Corvette Club Santa Barbara.
As most of you know they purchased the dealership from Dick Graham
in 2014. Bunnin came to the aide of Corvette Club Santa Barbara by
hosting the kick off party for the 2014 National Corvette Caravan to
Bowling Green, KY in August. We look forward to a long relationship.
Preview of the Petersen Museum that reopens in December! If this is
what the outside looks like, I have to see the inside...
I received an email addressed to webmaster this week that is worth
sharing. It is from a Professional Photographer that specializes in Automotive Photography. She does nice work and there are literally thousands of photos of every car imaginable. Take a look, her work is not

Minutes of September 1, 2015 General Meeting

1. Meeting called to order 6:30 pm by Peter Mackins. Guests tonight Bill Barrison
brought his friend Ed again and two UCSB students Vincent (who has a19 79
and Adam came to visit club). Full house tonight. Had to move chairs around.
2. Secretary’s Report distributed and approved.
3. Treasurer’s Report distributed and approved. Fred Lopez reports. To get a hold of
Bunnin Chev about advertising in newsletter. (Andrea)
4. Membership Report: Pat Bloom reports. 96 members with 75 cars as of today.
Check roster to make sure your information is correct especially your email
addresses.
5. Bragging Corner: Please email Pat Bloom on anything interesting happening to you for the
next newsletter column ( trips, family things, etc.)
6. NCM Ambassadors Report. Frank LoMonaco reports Museums Motorsports Park is in a legal
issue with neighbors. Frank received Master Ambassador Award. Fred Smith won award
for Best Website in all clubs International and in US. Congratulations.

12. 50/50 Raffle: Pot $43. Lanie Medina won. Split with club. Gave away two memberships.
Sharon Smith won but declined. Already a member. Lanie Medina won again. Bill Barrison
won the second membership.
