2006 TEAM
All-Star
the
n mid-2005, when we introduced
the EVENTDV 25 to recognize the
25 hottest and most influential
videographers in the business, I
hoped we’d be selecting our event video
All-Star team on an annual basis, but
figured the chances were just as good it
would end up a one-shot deal. One
necessity for sustaining an awards program of this type is securing sponsors,
and the support of Grass Valley and
NewTek has been instrumental in making
the EVENTDV 25 a yearly undertaking.
Another thing we needed was a platform, and for two years running, the
4EVER Group has been gracious
enough to squeeze us into the awards
gala of their annual conference so we’d
have a big stage to recognize our honorees in front of their colleagues and
peers. But for me, the real question was
whether the All-Star team would catch
on with our readers and spark enough
interest and/or controversy to keep ’em
coming back for more. I’m pleased to
report we’ve had our share of both.
Last year’s EVENTDV 25 was selected
through a hybrid process, combining
online nominations from readers with
the efforts of a five-person executive
committee. Selecting this year’s all-star
team was a whole new ballgame. With
more awareness of the awards throughout the industry, I was confident we’d
get enough reader participation to turn
the entire selection process over to
online voting. So the 2006 EVENTDV
All-Star team—just like the major
league baseball all-star squads that
give us our theme—was selected

entirely by the fans. And it will suffice
to say that everyone who made this list
has a lot of fans.
One of the interesting trends that
emerged during this year’s online voting
was videographers “campaigning” for
themselves. For the most part, this is
legitimate—as long as the people who
vote are genuine videographers and/or
EVENTDV readers, and only vote for a
particular person once—but it’s also
quite transparent. It took me almost
three minutes to catch on to this trend
this year, but two things gave it away:
the same videographer receiving votes in
striking clumps (say, 10 votes in 15 minutes), and the comment field filling up
multiple times with the exact same list
of credentials—typos and all. The good
thing is, we required names and email
addresses from everyone who voted, and
illegitimate voters are easy to catch by
the way they identify themselves. (One
did make the mistake of pasting in not
just his candidate’s CV, but also the line
“or just cut and paste the following:”
just above it. Naughty, naughty.)
The majority of one candidate's votes
were submitted from a series of phony
Yahoo! addresses in rapid succession,
which was easier to dismiss. The most
bizarre case was a videographer who
has aggressively campaigned to make
the list two years running (and in fact
was the only person to do so last year,
even though I didn’t recognize it at the
time). Oddly, all but a couple of his/her
supporters this year identified themselves as friends, clients, and nonvideographer
colleagues
(event
photographers, wedding planners,
caterers, etc.), and in many cases, as
people who weren’t familiar with
EVENTDV at all. It’s flattering to me
that some people think highly enough
of the EVENTDV 25 that they’d work so
assiduously to ensure their inclusion,
and of course it’s great to have friends
and influence people. But the EVENTDV
25 is about influencing videographers.
To explain precisely how a particular
candidate is hot or influential among
his or her peers, we asked our voters to
explain their selections with a short
description of why they chose their
candidate. In the “baseball card” that
follows for each EVENTDV 25 honoree,
we’ve included the most eloquent
What the Voters Said:
“Pioneer of short-form wedding video. Master
marketer. So much more than a
videographer—a class act in every respect!”
• Introduced Wedding Podcast Network, 2006
quotes from the readers who voted for
them. And in addition to the career and
recent “stats” that appear below those
quotes, we’ve also included insights
from the honorees themselves. We
posed two questions to each honoree:
· What will be the key trend in the
industry in 2007?
· What will be the biggest challenge
facing videographers in 2007?
We’ve included the best sound
bites here, in part as a message
from EventDV to our new 25:
You’re all officially industry leaders
now, if you didn’t realize it already
(your peers certainly did). And as
Bruce Springsteen used to bellow
from the stage, “Did you think this
was a free ride?”
But enough with the preliminaries.
Presenting the starting lineup for the
2006 EVENTDV 25 All-Star Team . . .

Key Trend in 2007:
“Technologically, the wider adoption of highdefinition video will provide better image quality
and potential up-sell to brides who already own
HDTVs. High-speed broadband and H.264 video
will change how we distribute and showcase our
productions. Artistically, timeshifting will enable
us to use a storytelling style rooted in traditional
documentary techniques.”

What the Voters Said:
“Chris and his staff have created a new
category that he calls ‘Concept Video Love

Key Trend in 2007:
“Since most event videographers are still
shooting in SD and most TVs being sold are
HD, something’s got to give. The battle
between Blu-ray and HD DVD will have to be
resolved for the changeover to be complete.”

What the Voters Said:
“Edit 1 Media does truly original event video
work, and they are same-day edit masters.
They’re always willing to lend a hand and
raise the bar.”
Biggest Challenge in 2007:
“Authoring and delivering HD in the midst of
growing pains and a format war, and
explaining to clients why it’s worth the extra
cost. As an industry, we also need to
communicate with manufacturers to let them
know what videographers need.”

Key Trend in 2007:
“The switch to HD. We have to keep in mind
that HD technology is not going to create a
great product. It can only enhance a product
that is great because of its content—i.e.,
great shooting, editing, and storytelling.”
Biggest Challenge in 2007:
“The continued struggle of high-end wedding
cinematographers to get paid what they and
their productions are truly worth.”
