History of AMVETS
In 1944, while World War II was still rag­
ing in Europe and in the Pacific, thousands
of young men were being sent home with
battle wounds and medical discharges. These
veterans had a desire and felt a need to
stick together; therefore, they began forming
clubs which they called American Veterans
of World War II. Soon, representatives of
in­dividual clubs united to help veterans help
themselves; thus AMVETS was born.
On July 23, 1947, President Harry S.
Truman signed the Congressional Charter
and since then, AMVETS has amended its
charter in 1953, 1966 and 1984 so that
today, AMVETS is the only Congressionally
Chartered veterans organization open to all
honorably discharged veterans who served
honorably after September 15, 1940, plus
those personnel presently serving on active
duty or in the reserve component.
Through the years, AMVETS has proven
to be the most progressive veterans organi­
zation through exhibits of volunteer work,
programs and service to veterans, their fami­
lies and communities throughout America.

Editorial Criteria
The following are guidelines to aid you in pre­
paring
your articles for publication.
1 Typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of
standard white paper. Typewritten, doublespaced, on one side of standard white paper;
e-mail preferred.
2. Normal rules of capitalization and punctua­
tion should be followed.
3. Each photograph should identify the person(s)
or group(s) in the photo and the activity in
which they are involved. Please indicate the
article the photo(s) accompany.
4. Captions can be written on the back of photos
(please do not use felt-tipped pens as they
smear), on a separate piece of paper and
attach to their respective photo or at the bot­
tom of articles with the number of the caption
corresponding to the number on the back of
the photo.
5. Photographs should not be stapled to the
articles or each other (the staple marker will
show in reproduction).
6. Articles should not be written on the backs
of photos but on a separate piece of paper as
prescribed in Number 1.

Commander’s Welcome
I would like to thank all of you for supporting and encouraging me through the years
as I worked my way up to being your Department Commander. With your support and
cooperation, I am looking forward to a good year for AMVETS Department of Wis­
consin. Hopefully everyone had a good safe summer and I wish the same for this fall.
It is no secret that we are struggling financially and our funding is decreasing more
every year. We have made several financial cuts over the past few years and even more at
the State Convention in Manitowoc. We have cut things such as the amount paid to State
Officers, PDC’s and District Commanders for travel to meetings and more. Most of us do
a lot for AMVETS and veteran causes on our own dime without thinking twice. The cost
of most everything is increasing and in most cases income is not going up. This is making
it increasingly difficult for those with low income to attend or participate in AMVETS
activities. I do not want to see this organization turn into a “rich mans” organization so
we have our work cut out to figure out how to increase our general fund. Although we are

gaining a few Posts we have lost several over the past few years.
One way of increasing our funding is by increasing membership. This creates revenue from membership dues
and increases people resources and ideas for getting things done at the Post, District and State levels. Social media
such as Facebook has proven to be an effective means of recruiting new members – many who are younger. The
organization we use to solicit funding is not doing a very good job for us and I feel that the percentage that these
type of companies keep for their own profit is excessive. The checks we get from them are getting smaller and we
are not getting them as often as we have in the past.
There are grants available but it is very competitive to get them and almost impossible without a professional
grant writer. Professional grant writers generally charge a hefty fee for their services. If anyone has grant writing
experience or know someone that does and is willing to donate some time it would be greatly appreciated.
Fortunately, by working together we were able to secure locations for our state meetings this year at no cost to
the Department. Many hotels are now asking $500 and up for meeting rooms and they are adding fees for things
like projectors, microphones and even water. It is nearly impossible to find a lunch for under $10. It is nice to have
our meetings at a hotel but I feel it is no more than a convenience.
I am a member of Post 33 in Beaver Dam. We hosted a SEC meeting several years ago at the Beaver Dam Vet­
erans Center at no cost to the Department. Post 33 provided a low cost lunch that was mostly prepared by the Post
and we made a profit for the Post. I am asking the Posts that have a space large enough to host the state meetings
and are willing to put on a lunch as fund raiser for their Post let the state know so that they can be considered for
future meetings. If there is a Post that is willing to put on a lunch in Waupaca for the December 5th State Meetings
please contact me as soon as possible so arrangements can be made.

1st Vice Commander Membership Report
First, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support and I will do my
best to perform the duties Department of Wisconsin 1st Vice Commander-Member­
ship at the level expected by all.
As chairman of the New Post Committee, I will strive to continue to have new Posts
chartered in Wisconsin, and urge all District Commanders with a perspective new
Post and relatively new Post to try to attend those Posts monthly meetings for at least
1 year to ensure that said Post will continue to grow with minimal assistance and to
ensure that continued support is available to retain those Posts.
As 1st Vice Commander-Membership I will be looking over membership numbers
for all Posts in Wisconsin, whereby we will be able to see if any Post is having dif­
ficulty retaining members via renewals and new members and life members. So far
this year we have chartered a new Post at convention – welcome Post 654 with 32 new
members…5 new Life and 27 new Annual members.

As July 2015, we are down 62 members from last year at this time. We have 10
more MAL (Member at Large), 2 new Life and 8 new Annual members. I would like to thank the Posts that have
retained or increased the membership for doing an outstanding job, keep up the good work. It’s our responsibility
to encourage fellow members to renew or become Life Members.
I would like to see our membership increase over the next year and beyond. I suggest all members of AMVETS
to sign up a new member for the next year. Get the word out via public service announcements on radio or local
paper that your AMVETS Post meets on a day, time and location, welcomes new members and explain what
AMVETS is about and our mission.
Currently we have 2 prospective new Posts getting started. A new Post in Colfax will be submitting the neces­
sary paperwork to the Department; hopefully they will be chartered by the September SEC. There is also interest
in forming a new Post in the Hertel area as well. If you know of a location that is interested in starting a new
AMVETS Post please let me know or have person of contact get in touch with me.
In closing, let’s band together and keep membership in AMVETS growing for the next year and beyond.

Greetings from Your Department Officers…

2nd Vice Commander-Programs
Greetings Fellow AMVETS Family members:
Congratulations to all of the newly elected Department
Officers, especially Commander Peter. I know you will
serve us well. Also, thank you for showing your trust in me
to serve another year as your Second Vice Commander.
With the help of all of the local Post Commanders
and 2nd Vice Commanders, I know we can have a bet­
ter reporting year than we did last year, which was very
successful, thanks to all that report their activities.
For those Posts that were unable to send a representative
to the Programs seminar at the State Convention, there are
a few things of importance that you need to be aware of.
First of all, please add to the comments line of EVERY

entry, the month and year of the activity. (i.e. 7/15). This
is necessary in order for me to determine monthly totals for Post of the Year Awards.
Also those of you sending me your reports in the mail, be sure to use the most cur­
rent form available at the SEC area on the State web site (www.amvets-wi.org), then
click on the ‘Programs’ button on the left side.
I hope everyone is enjoying this brief Wisconsin Summer, and hope to see many of
you at the SEC meeting on September 26th.
Hello All and Good Health to everyone,
This is I, Kim Barbian, the new State President for the
AMVETS Riders of WI. I know I have tall boots to fill
following Tom Busse but, I know with the help of all the
new officers for the Riders I can live up to the challenge.
2015-16 elected officers: 1st Vice Ed Flint, 2nd Vice
Don Larsen, Sec. Todd Barbian, Tres. Kelli Koellner,
Sergeant-at-Arms Guy Mockler, Chaplin Tom Busse
and J.A. Ed Cadwell. What a great TEAM!
Right now we have 2 Districts very active and I hope
a new one is coming around! District #2: July 18th
helper with family day at Union Grove Family Picnic,
bringing patients out of their rooms to eat and play

games with their families. July 25th we helped with
game night for the Homeless Vets of Cottage 16 sponsored by the Auxiliary 60
women. We will be having another game night in September sponsored by the Rid­
ers and another sponsored by Auxiliary 60 in October. These vets really appreciate
these events. We truly value all the support to help the less fortunate!
August 15th was our big fundraiser at Ironwood Chophouse in Union Grove on
Hwy 11. I, personally, thank everyone that came out and supported this super event!
District 8 in Chippewa Falls had their fundraiser on July 25th, with a ton of raffles
and a ride as well. Fun was had by all and a lot of money was made to allow them to
make donations to various veterans organizations.

Remembering One of Our Greatest –
John Schmidt
Being There-Reaching Out

Back in the fall of 2011 while attending
the annual AMVETS Department Campout, I was introduced to John Schmidt a
fellow AMVET from Post 7. We sat a pic­
nic table and talked for the better part of an
hour. John was an amazing man. His stories John Schmidt – “God Bless”…rest
of serving in the Army during WWII were in peace (1924-2015).
fascinating. He talked about his life work­
ing and the raising of his children. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchil­
dren. He beamed with pride of being a life-time member of AMVETS. He enjoyed
the AMVETS family life, which he referred to, as some of his best memories. He said
that Post 7 was the best post in Wisconsin. Of course, this was said with a broad smile
and a twinkle in his eyes. John was a true AMVET.
During the years that past, I have come to look forward to meeting John at the
many SEC meetings and state conventions. We would sit sometimes for a few min­
utes to chat but more importantly to just say hello.
At our most recent state convention, I happen to talk with John’s wife, Ellen about
John. She mentioned that he wasn’t able to attend due to health reasons. I wished
John my best. Unfortunately, I recently learned with sadness that John had passed
away. I also was informed that at John’s funeral the line was long of friends wishing
to pay their respect to a great man and fellow AMVET.
In the short time I have come to know John, my respect and gratefulness are happy
memories. He lived a fulfilling life enjoying to the fullest. John will be missed.
Founded in 2004 by Judith Singer, Being There-Reaching Out (BT-RO) is an
entirely volunteer-run nonprofit that financially, emotionally and physically assists
families of Wisconsin men or women who were lost in or due to war (such as sui­
cide). BT-RO brings together families to create connections and continue the healing
process in comfortable, private and safe environments. The organization also holds
a Walk for the Fallen every August on Milwaukee’s Veterans Affairs grounds, cre­
ates and decorates a float for Milwaukee’s Veteran’s Day Parade each year and hosts
regular retreats throughout the state. All BT-RO programs are free of charge with the
exception of hotel rooms (if needed), but no family is ever turned away and scholar­
ships are always available.
“Our volunteers are full time and the fundraising they do is the key to our organiza­
tion. We have no corporate sponsors, so they come up with the money for everything
we do,” Singer says. “The biggest healing is to be with other families. Participants
say the BT-RO’s gatherings are like a shot in the arm that keeps them going until they
meet up again. I just wish we would have been able to do this for vets of past wars.
Ideally, I’d like to see programs like BT-RO become available in every state.”
Currently, the nonprofit is looking for volunteers to join the board of directors, help
with fundraising and those with experience in grant writing. Additionally, BT-RO is
seeking businesses that are willing to sponsor gathering places for retreats/events.

**In the spring of 2012, an article was written for the Sound-Off. With fond
memory I would like to reintroduce John to you.**
John Schmidt was a Life Member of AMVETS belonging to Post 7 – Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. John was a member of the “greatest generation”, born and lived through
the Great Depression. At the time of WWII, he would have liked to have enlisted in
the Merchant Marines or the US Navy, but in the end, was drafted in the US Army.
John served for 1942 to 1946. His unit was the 3562nd Heavy Automotive Ordi­
nance. He was stationed the last 6-months of WWII in the European Theater in the
Nuremburg, Germany area. While returning to France, John was slated to be trans­
ferred to the Pacific Theater for the duration of the war. But with the surrender of
Japan, John stayed in France to enjoy the people and great wine country.
Upon being discharged in 1946, John returned to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He married and
had two children. He was employed at the Canteen Corporation for over 38-years then
retiring and enjoying life with his four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
John had been a member of AMVET for over 50-years. He enjoys his post and
attended regular meetings. John was happy that AMVETS is his family. He has no
regrets only wishing other vets would come into the AMVETS family.

We, the mothers, wives, widows, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, stepdaughters
and granddaughters of the American Veteran and female veterans, fully realizing
our responsibilities to the community, state and nation, associate ourselves for the
following purposes: To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of
America; to safeguard the principles of freedom, liberty and justice for all; to promote
the cause of peace and goodwill among nations; to maintain inviolate the freedom
of our country; to preserve the fundamentals of democracy and Americanism; to
perpetuate the friendship and associations of the American Veteran and to dedicate
ourselves to the cause of mutual assistance…this by the grace of God.
AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary has been serving their families, communities and
our nation’s veterans for over 50 years. All of our service is accomplished through
volunteer hours and contributions of our members and supporters. Because of our
members and people like you, who care and want to make a difference, we are able
to support our various projects throughout the United States. Donations to John
Tracy Clinic, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, PAWS With A Cause, and Freedom’s
Foundation enable each of these organizations to provide the care to those children
with disabilities and medical conditions, physically challenged adults and children,
and instill patriotism in the youth of America.

Why I Would Like to Represent AMVETS
as Miss AMVET White Clover Princess
I would like to represent AMVETS as Miss
AMVET White Clover Princess because it would
be a great opportunity and even a greater honor. My
grandfathers and step grandfather were all in the
military. Being the White Clover Princess is a way l
can honor them and honor all the veterans that have
served this country.
As Miss White Clover Princess, I would like to
further help veterans, their family members, and con­

tinue to do more community services. Through the
White Clover Princess AMVETS community, I have been able to do many
things for veterans. Examples are putting flags up at the
local cemeteries for Memorial Day, Clover Drive, and helping at community events;
I wish I could do even more. By participating in these events, I have had the chance
to meet many incredible veterans. I look forward to continuing to help veterans for
many years to come.

Judy Berna and sister Abby. Judy
is a member of AMVETS Auxiliary
Post 7. Judy’s Father was member of the Army National Guard,
her Stepfather was in the Marines
and Emily’s Grandfather, on her
Father’s side, was in the Navy.
So they had most of the branches
of service covered. Emily is being
sponsored by AMVET Post 7 in
Oshkosh. Emily, or Emmie as
she likes to be called is 16 years
old. Emily is home schooled so
she should be available for most
invitations.

parade in Watertown on July 4th.
After the parade
they had the opportunity to have their
picture taken with the Milwaukee Brewers Famous Racing Sausages. The Sausages came to town to be in the parade to entertain parade goers with their running
and joking antics. Members of the Color Guard unit included from left to right;

this is a great honor to represent the AMVETS of Wisconsin.
Union Grove Facilities - Cottage 16 – Homeless Veterans
Hello, Oh Boy game nights go over very well at Cottage 16, Just
ask Jim and Marvell Ruppel how much the veterans appreciate us
coming out there. Some nights have been sponsored by the Rid­
ers District #2 and Post 60, the Sons 911 and Jim Fabian, and now
the Auxiliary Post 60. I hope more Posts and Auxiliaries will start
to sponsor this great event. A small donation of $50 will provide
food, soda and support to the homeless veterans who are Drug and
Alcohol FREE, trying to change their lives for the betterment of the
communities that they reside in.
I listen to the stories the vets tell me of how they became homeless and it is heartbreaking. They really have endured far more that most of us. They come to Cottage
16 to get help with their benefits, schooling and social support. It is a path to become
the strong individuals. They go out into the world and are proud, strong and productive
individuals in the communities they live in. I am very PROUD of some of these men
who are able to overcome a terrible weakness.
As most of you know, I am the liaison for The Homeless Veterans at Cottage 16,
they are in need of some items for the upcoming winter season! And you know how
unpredictable Wisconsin can be! Sometimes very cruel also!
If anyone can help with donations it would be greatly appreciated, and I am sure God
will look favorably upon you for helping our Vets that are less fortunate than some of
us. Warm coats, hooded sweatshirts, long johns, socks, fleece pajamas, backpacks, ear
buds, flash drives, day planners, head phones, Clorox wipes, dryer sheets, laundry soap
(powdered), bath towels and wash cloths and Wal-Mart gift cards as well!
Along with these items I am looking for Christmas cards, so I can give them to the school
children I work with to fill them out for our vets. I put those in gift boxes at Cottage 16. I
also share some cards with Charles Roth in Tomah, along with Richard Bills at Zablocki.
So please help with old unused Christmas cards you may have. It is very much appreciated.

VA Serves Older Veterans
Did You Know…about 9.7 million Veterans – more than 44 percent of all Veterans –
who are 65 or older. Veterans of any age may qualify for VA benefits, including health
care, home loans, and pension. Spouses and family members caring for older Veterans, as
well as older survivors of deceased Veterans, may also be entitled to VA support.
In gratitude for your honorable service to our nation, VA provides benefits to help you take
care of your family; buy, retain, or modify a home; earn a degree; start a career; stay healthy;
and do so much more in life after the military. Here are a few ways VA serves older Veterans:
We’re equipped to care for you. Through, geriatrics, extended care, home health
aide and care services, telehealth, and other programs, VA addresses Veterans’ com­
plex health and personal care needs in home and community-based settings, and at VA
medical centers.
We can bring care to you. VA has many options for older Veterans to receive care at
home, avoiding regular trips to the doctor or longer stays at medical facilities. With homebased primary care, for instance, eligible Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare services can
receive certain health services at home.
We provide you with tools to cope with vision loss. With therapy and cutting-edge
assistive technology, Veterans who are legally blind or who have low or damaged vision
can stay active. VA’s blind and vision rehabilitation programs, available through outpa­
tient clinics, intensive training, and home care, make it easier to live with poor eyesight.
We increase your options. If you’re eligible for or receiving a VA pension, larger
monthly payments may be available under the VA pension aid and attendance and house­
bound programs; for instance, if you need help performing daily functions or you cannot
leave your house due to a disability.
We protect your VA benefits. If it’s hard to manage your VA benefits due to injury, age, or
disease, the VA fiduciary program can find and appoint someone to help handle your affairs.
We support those who care for Veterans. VA offers resources to help caregivers stay
strong and organized on behalf of Veterans, including a free six-week online work­
shop for family members called “Building Better Caregivers.” Call 1-855-260-3274 for
information on other VA caregiver benefits. VA also offers several forms of respite care
services for caregivers who need a break.
