The Waiting Families program is open to all families (including parents) of deployed or geographically separated Soldiers. Waiting Families is a program under ACS’s Relocation Readiness and was established to provide “a bridge to fill the gap that military families must endure during times of mobilization and deployment”. Many events scheduled are free for families and include fun activities, like bowling and dinner. For more information, visit www.blissmwr.com or contact Cher Poehlein at 568-1132. December marks the grand opening of Fort Bliss’ “Yellow Ribbon Room” located inside Army Community Services (ACS), Bldg. 2494, Ricker Road. Thanks to a generous grant provided by the Permian Basin Area Foundation/TRIADFUND, families of deployed Soldiers now have a 1,240 square foot room to call their very own. Waiting Families’ Calendar of Events Waiting families can use their “Yellow Ribbon Room” as a home away from home to meet with other families who are experiencing and enduring similar hardships. Families will now have a designated, kid-friendly location to talk and support each other, write to their deployed Soldiers, email and see their Soldier on new computers equipped with webcams, designated especially for them. The new “Yellow Ribbon Room” has two video gaming areas with cozy sofas and wide screen televisions, a library area complete with books and audio books, ten computers set with webcams, a play area with toys and children’s furniture, and even a dining room table supplied with stationary for writing letters to their Soldier. If your Soldier is deployed or scheduled to deploy in the future, the Waiting Families group warmly welcomes you to visit and make this incredible space, your home away from home. Dec 14, 2007 - Holiday Celebration at the Centennial Club Thanks again, Permian Basin Area Foundation/TRIADFUND, for the giving contributions and effort in supporting Fort Bliss’s families of deployed Soldiers. Cher shares... Her personal story and deployment coping strategy Relocation Manager, Cher Poehlein, has been a proud Army wife for twenty-three years. Not only does she work directly with Waiting Families, she and her four children are also a family in waiting. Cher’s husband, SGM David Poehlein, is currently serving a two year tour in Korea. Time goes by much faster for the Poehlein family because of their dedication to keep busy and their involvement with all of the activities for Waiting Families. After twenty-three years of service, “deployment now is almost second nature” for the Poehleins. Cher also is “a firm believer in staying active, traveling, learning, and having fun”. Upon her husband’s return, the family will share all of their experiences with eachother. She imparts some valuable information that was once shared with her when she was newly married, “do not put your life on hold while your husbands are away. Keep living life to blissNOW www.blissmwr.com the fullest and expand your horizons” If Cher’s husband is home, “it’s icing on the cake but when he is away,” she states “life still goes on and the world keeps turning… and each day is an opportunity to embrace life.” Cher certainly does embrace life and remain busy. Not only is she currently a full time single parent, she is also attending graduate school, and working full time. She began working for ACS in 2000 as the Relocation Program Manager in Ansbach, Germany. She has been working at ACS here at Fort Bliss since 2002. As a result of the personal meaning that the Waiting Families program holds for Cher, she feels very “blessed to have the Waiting Families program fall under Relocation”; thus allowing her to directly work and relate with other families of deployed and geographically separated Soldiers. Fort Bliss Waiting Families program invites you to stay active by registering to join in the free fun with some of their upcoming events and the exciting grand opening of the “Yellow Ribbon Room”. Eastburn, Marketing Assistant F ort Bliss Veterinary Services, located at Bldg. 6077, Carter Road, offers a variety of affordable services and products for pets belonging to active duty military, families, and retirees. If you recently PCS’ed to Fort Bliss and live in post housing, you must register your pet within five days of your arrival.Vet services are also available to authorized families living off post. Although the clinic does not have the resources for emergency or inpatient care, the services they are able to offer are vital as they can save time and money, and prevent illness and fatalities of our furry companions. Now that the heat has temporarily subsided, Dr. Starr, one of three veterinarians employed, offered some advice for winter pet care; be sure to check your pet’s water bowl frequently to ensure it has not frozen and provide plenty of shelter from strong, cold winter winds. According to Dr. Starr, casualties are just as prevalent during the winter, as they are during summer months. If your pet starts to shiver outside, immediately move him or her inside. When asked what topic you would like most for Fort Bliss pet owner’s to become educated on, Dr. Starr did not hesitate with her response. She discussed both Parvo and Heartworms. She stated that both are seen quite frequently in their treatment facility. Parvo is a virus which can live in the ground for several years and can be deadly. Puppies who have not received at least three full sets of vaccines are most susceptible. Since military families often move in and out of housing, there is no way of knowing whether an infected dog has ever been present. Although there is no guarantee, Dr. Starr recommends bleaching the yard and home as much as possible to anyone considering purchasing a puppy or to anyone with a new puppy at home. Try to restrict the puppy to a small area and do not walk your new puppy in unfamiliar areas until all vaccines have been received. Since Fort Bliss does not have an extremely cold climate, mosquitoes are present year round. Pet owners should keep their dogs on heartworm prevention to prevent the spread of heartworms caused by mosquito bites. Bring your canine companion in for a heartworm test, if a dose of heartworm prevention has been missed. When heartworms are detected early, the chance of successful treatment increases. It is a requirement of El Paso and Fort Bliss residents to have their dogs and cats microchipped. It is a quick and inexpensive tool that can be used to reunite pet owners with their pets when they are lost or stolen. If you bring your pet into Vet Services on Fort Bliss for microchipping, they will also register the chip for their clients. Lisa, a vet technician on post, stated that many pets seen at the clinic may already have a microchip, but the clinic where it was purchased never had it registered. If a pet’s chip has not been registered, there is no way of being able to contact or match the animal with it’s owner. You do not have to go far if you are considering a new addition to your family. Fort Bliss Vet Services also offers an adoption program for stray animals found on government property. When a stray animal is brought to the clinic, the owner has three days to come in and claim their pet. After three days,Vet Services cares for the stray and then places them up for adoption. However, due to limited space at the clinic,Vet services can only keep adoption animals for a limited time. If the pet has not been adopted, then the clinic must turn the animal over to other adoption agencies, such as the Humane Society. Fort Bliss has many services to offer at more affordable prices than many off post veterinarian treatment facilities, including ultra sound and x-ray equipment, a pharmacy, microchips and vaccines.Visit www.blissmwr.com or call the clinic at (915) 569-2266 for complete pricing and additional information. www.blissmwr.com blissNOW bN | Larry R Price DDS Daniel M Allen DDS MS Quality orthodontics is more than just appearance We welcome new patients! Our Mission is Caring. To earn NAEYC Accreditation in the new system, The Main Child Development Center went through and extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the ten new NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the ten NAEYC program standards. NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years. In the 20 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. More than 11,000 programs, serving one million young children, are currently accredited by NAEYC – approximately 8 percent of all preschools and other early childhood programs. “The new NAEYC Accreditation system raises the bar for preschools, child care centers, and other early childhood programs,” said Mark Ginsberg, Ph.D., executive director or NAEYC. The Fort Bliss Main Child Development Center’s NAEYC Accreditation is a sign that they are a leader in a national effort to invest in high-quality early childhood education, and to help give all children a better start.” Bringing the NAEYC Annual Conference Home by Carrie W. Eastburn, Marketing Assistant This year’s NAEYC Annual Conference was held in Chicago, Illinois from November 7–10. Fort Bliss Child Care Directors,Virgetta Johnson, Main CDC, and Elvia Walker, Logan CDC, were given the opportunity to attend. As a result, they were able to enhance their knowledge on new child care methods of improvement, including topics on early literacy, infant care, school readiness, as well as social and emotional development. Both directors will now share the data presented by the renowned experts from the conference with their staff to better prepare and enhance the skills of Fort Bliss’s early childhood professionals. The NAEYC Accreditation system has set voluntary professional standards for programs for young children since 1985. As of September 2006, the Association’s revised program standards and criteria have introduced a new level of quality, accountability, and service for parents and children in child care programs. The new standards reflect the latest research and best practices in early childhood education and development. NAEYC is committed in utilizing the newest studies and analysis on positive child outcomes to ensure young children continue to receiving the highestquality care and education possible. The NAEYC Accreditation system was created in 1985 to set professional standards for early childhood education, and to help families identify highquality preschools, child care centers, and other early education programs. To earn NAEYC Accreditation, a program must meet each of the ten NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards. Programs are accredited by NAEYC for a five-year period, with update reports required annually. www.blissmwr.com blissNOW 11 bN | officers’ club O’Club Holiday Pastry Demonstration It’s amazing how some things that are so simple can be made into the sublime. Make a toast to bring in the New Year with your family and friends. every MON & WED 8:30-10:30am at ACS SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT ORIENTATION every MON & WED 10am at ACS Goodbye to the old year and hello to the new… Even though the traditional New Year’s song written by Robert Burns “Auld Lang Syne” dates back to the late 18th century, many people either can only recall the chorus. This could be a result of the modern translations, the numerous versions, or because people are uncertain of the meaning in the lyrics. The title “auld lang syne” can be translated in English as “days of long ago” or “in olden days”. In America, it is mostly sung on New Year’s as to say goodbye to the old year, but in many other countries it is also sung at graduations and funerals. There are many reliable resources available to learn more about this song, as well as, other New Year’s traditions. One version is provided here, but make a resolution this year to visit Mickelsen Community Library to research other versions and learn more about this timeless melody. Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne? CHORUS For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup! And surely I’ll be mine! And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. CHORUS We twa hae run about the braes, and pou’d the gowans fine; But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit, sin’ auld lang syne. CHORUS We twa hae paidl’d in the burn, frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar’d sin’ auld lang syne. CHORUS And there’s a hand my trusty fiere! And gies a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak a right gude-willie waught, for auld lang syne. If you’re the type who likes to ring in the New Year with a list of resolutions, good luck on your new good habits! With them, why not add one more? How about going “Green”? Do you want to preserve more of nature and provide a healthier future for the next generation? Reducing the amount of excess resources you consume is the surest way to accomplish that. Simple actions are some easy ways to begin: There are three R’s you can add to your list to live by: 1. Reduce 2. Reuse 3. Recycle. Here are some great tips to add to your lifestyle: • Break the Bottled Water Habit - Switch from disposable to reusable water bottles, buy a filter for your tap water if necessary. • Turn down the thermostat on your water heater. A setting of 120° F is adequate for most home needs. • Clean Green – Cold wash your clothes and choose the no-heat dry cycle on your dishwasher. • Eat locally - Buy one pound of locally grown food a week. • Eat less meat: A plant-based diet generally requires less land, energy, and other resources. Crop-based food requires an average of 0.78 global hectares per ton of food, compared to 2.1 global hectares required to produce one ton of animal-based food. • Bring Your Own Bag – “The New BYOB.” • Switch out your incandescent light bulbs to compact florescent light bulbs (CFL’s) you can save money on electric bills, use less energy and reduce your carbon footprint. • Drop off old prescription or nonprescription glasses at your local LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Sears, Target Optical store, or give them to your local Lions Club. • Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle and reduce the amount that you drive- instead walk, cycle, carpool, or use public transportation. • Avoid purchasing disposable items with lots of packaging. Re-use items when possible, and always recycle items that are recyclable. • In good weather, consider hanging clothes outside and using totally free solar energy to do the drying. www.myfootprint.org www.newdream.org www.earthday.net www.idealbite.com www.seventhgen.com www.homegrownelpaso.com ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE every MON & WED 8:30-10:30am at ACS SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT ORIENTATION every MON & WED 10am at ACS SKIESUnlimited ACTIVITY CLASSES offered several days throughout the week, contact YESS at Youth Services ACS NEWCOMER’S ORIENTATION & RE-ENTRY WORKSHOP every MON–FRI 8am-4:30pm at ACS CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH every TUE & THU 8:30-10:30am at ACS PLAYGROUP FOR PARENTS & TODDLERS (18MOS-4YRS) every TUE & THU 10am-12n at the Bowling Center READ ME A STORY AUTO MAINTENANCE & SAFETY CLASSES every WED 6-7pm & every SAT 8-9am at Auto Crafts MONTHLY SEXUAL ASSAULT REVIEW BOARD MEETING every 4th THU 10-11am at Bldg 2, Rm 118 SEAFOOD LUNCH SPECIAL every FRI 11am-1pm at the Bowling Center KARAOKE NIGHT every FRI & SAT 8:30pm at the Bowling Center CLUB THUNDER ALLEY every FRI & SAT 10pm-1am at the Bowling Center SUPER AWESOME SATURDAYS every SAT 6pm-12am at SAS Logan Heights SKIESUnlimited FASHION MODELING every SAT 2:30-4:30pm at Youth Services every TUE 10am at Mickelsen Library, E-Wing of Bldg 2 FAMILY STORY TIME 1ST TERMER’S FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT every 2nd TUE & 4th BOWLING SPECIAL MON 9am-4pm at ACS SCHNITZEL LUNCH SPECIAL every WED 11am-1pm at the Bowling Center FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT WED 1:30-3:30pm at ACS every BOSS MEETING every 1st & 3rd WED 3pm at Armed Forces YMCA BEEF & BURGUNDY 6-9pm at the O’Club every WED every SAT 10:30-11am at Mickelsen Library (bowl 2 games, get 1 free) every SAT 11am-1am at the Bowling Center ROD & GUN CLUB IDPA DEFENSIVE HANDGUN MATCH 4th & 5th SAT of every month SUNDAY BRUNCH 2pm at the O’Club every SUN 10am- FAMILY FUN BOWLING every SUN 11am-6pm at the Bowling Center NFL SUNDAY TICKET every SUN 11am at the O’Club & Centennial A R a s s e t t e Homes Preferred Mortgage Source Your VA Loan Specialist FREE Pre-Qualifications ~ First Time Homebuyers ~ Purchases / Refinances ~ 100% + VA Loans "Always There for You" Carla Winters, VA Loan Specialist (915) 832-0540 fax (915) 832-0546 6600 N. There have been many great contributors to black America, but our students did not start learning about them up until recently in the 20th century when it was added to our history books. Blacks have been in American since the colonial times, but their stories are still not widely studied in schools outside the month of February. Dr. Carter G. Woodson named the second week of February “Negro History Week” because of two great men born that week who helped the cause of the black man in America. Frederick Douglass, an American Abolitionist, was one of the greatest anti-slavery leaders in America. Former President Abraham Lincoln, who held strong opposition to slavery, signed into law the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, ordering all persons held as slaves free. Both men became personal friends in later years. Other notable events that took place during black history month were: • • • February, 3, 1870: The 15th Amendment was passed, granting blacks the right to vote. February 12, 1909: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by black and white Americans in New York in hopes of ending racial discrimination and segregation. February 1, 1960: Black students in Greensboro, NC held a sit in at a segregated lunch counter during what we know as the Civil Rights Movement. Black history should not be limited to just February or black people, as blacks have helped mold the United States into what it is today. Let us not forget that after blacks first arrived in Virginia against their will in 1619, they have gone on to do many great things. Without Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, would we be able to wear the clothes we have on today? Without Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, would people still be in search of their freedom? And without blacks standing shoulder to shoulder with their white counterparts in every major U.S. War to date, would not we have the greatest Armed Forces in the world? In 1976, as part of the nation’s Bicentennial, Negro History Week was later established as Black History Month. The next time you wonder why there is a full month set aside to celebrate black history, think about the wonderful accomplishments of Black Americans. Think how rich our history is, and how well it meshes with the history of White Americans, Hispanic American, Native Americans, and even Asian Americans. You will then see why it is celebrated all over the United States, as well as nations abroad. Staff Sgt. Chance Finely, with the 1-204th Air Defense Artillery, National Guard, practices the squat bender during the PT course. Official U.S. Army Photo This is the last in a four part series on improving PT scores. This final segment is on improving your running time. Doug Briggs, Ph.D., CSCS Director of Strength & Conditioning-US ARMY/MWR and Pastor of the Steel Plates Fort Bliss, Texas W e have addressed the issue of weight loss, sit-ups, and push-ups in the previous three segments of this series and for a reason: with the loss of weight and the strengthening of the core, the body will be better at running.Your body should be lighter and stronger by now and ready for a training cycle focusing on running. So why the picture of squat benders you ask? By utilizing weight loss and strengthening the body, the result will be more forceful and longer strides. Running in and of itself is never enough; you must incorporate weight training as well, whether it is body weight exercises as in the squat benders or free weight exercises in the gym. When done correctly resistance training will go along way toward improving your time in the run. Try the above 5k training program to help you. 5k is equal to 3.1 miles. This program is from about.com, specifically, http://running.about. com/od/5kplans/a/5kadvbeg_2.htm. About.com has some great information on running, walking, and about anything else you may ever need to know. “Fartlek” in Swedish means speed play. On Week 1, Run 4, the chart says to do a 1.5 mile fartlek run. This could be accomplished by using the track at Stout PFC and alternating 1 fast lap and 1 slow lap. Run the 1st lap fast, the 2nd at a medium pace, the 3rd fast, the 4th at a medium pace, the 5th fast, and the 6th and last lap medium. You could also run distance on a road and vary the intensity from stop sign to stop sign. Sprint from the 1st stop sign to the 2nd stop sign, jog from the 2nd stop sign to the 3rd stop sign and so forth. The key here is to vary the intensity and make the body adapt to the constantly changing requirements you are placing on it. I give you my word that if you follow the above listed 5k Training Program your run time will decrease and you will feel great! Keep up the good work and remember; you and only you are responsible for your fitness level. Do not make excuses, but instead get the job done and take responsibility for your own action. My favorite saying is, “Weakness is a sin! Weight training (or in this case running) is your salvation!” My friends in Jamaica started calling me “Pastor” because of this statement. Have a great run and please feel free to contact me or my staff if you need help or have questions. Tips 1. Forget stretching; warm-up instead. Stretching can reduce muscular power output by 3-8% and has been shown to cause as many injuries as it prevents. When was the last time you saw a Cheetah get up and do a stretching routine before chasing its next meal? The Cheetah goes from 0 to Max almost instantaneously and with no injury. If the Cheetah stretched, it may not eat. If you have to stretch, do it at the end of your run or exercise bout. 2. Work on the mechanics of running. Have a track coach or someone familiar with proper form coach you on the mechanics of running. Concentrate on arm movements and movement patterns in your legs and hips. Do short distance bouts of highknees, ankle flips, butt-kickers, and so forth to work on your running efficiency. 3. Train by running longer distances than those you will be tested on. If you are being tested on 2 mile runs, train using variety and train using a distance of 3 miles. You will most certainly be able to run 2 miles faster than you can run 3 miles. 4. Eat something light about an hour before your test. I find something liquid with a high complex carbohydrate count and protein works very well. 5. Forget Gatorade, Powerade, and all the other electrolyte replacement drinks. You are only running 2 miles, not a marathon. For anything under 1 hour in duration, drink water! www.blissmwr.com blissNOW 27 bN | bowling Bowling Center Renovations The Fort Bliss Bowling Center is proud to announce that in pursuit of customer service and improved business operations the renovation of the snack bar, lounge and arcade.
