SC ACTE – HSE Division Annual Conference When: December 4- 6, 2014 Where: Myrtle Beach Our conference in Myrtle Beach this year sure was a change of pace from last year. The change in the time of year to hold our annual meeting was a good decision. The weather was great and there were lots of perks to changing that the attendees enjoyed. Free parking, free WiFi and not to mention many conference attendees were able to do some Christmas shopping in the evening as stores stayed open later at this time of year. We began our conference on Thursday, December 4, 2014, with registration and warm coffee and muffins. Angel Clark, SCDE Health Science Education Associate, gave a brief update on what’s new for health science and HOSA. Our conference opening keynote speaker, Dr. Linda Karges Bone was a hit with her presentation “The Challenge of Motivation: Surfing the Brain Waves to Successful Health” After our keynote address during our awards luncheon, the executive committee had opening remarks and announcements. Attendance was good and there was a great audience to witness the winners of our division awards. The 2014-15 SC Health Science Educators Division winners were announced and awarded plaques: Teacher of the Year -Shana Lee Outstanding New Health Science Teacher - Teresa Hayden Outstanding Health Science Teacher in Community Service - Katrina Haynes Champion Advocate of the Year - Rhonda Evatt Award of Merit - South Carolina Hospital Association There were other recognitions at the luncheon that included past president awards. Those that were recognized during the luncheon for these awards included: President 2011-2012 Debra Dicks President 2012-13 Peggy Harrill President 2013-14 Susie Burgess Our Thursday afternoon general sessions included hearing from a few of our vendors. We want to make sure that we thank all of our vendors for participating in the conference this year. The teachers really enjoyed learning about the new materials and being able to ask them questions about programs and textbooks they were offering. We appreciate Pass Assured, Today’s Class, and Cengage partially sponsoring some of the delicious food that the participants had an opportunity to partake in. The afternoon sessions included presentations by: Nick Milasnovich – Pass Assured – “The Pharmacy Technician Program” Dr. Carrie Tucker – White Knoll High School – “What Page Is It On?” Diane Yeager – Electronic Health Records – “The Challenge, the Solutions” Peggy Albano - Today’s Class – “Team Based Learning” Toby Burleson – Pearson – “Effective Strategies for Teaching Anatomy and Physiology” With our brains full…we adjourned for the day to rest our noggins and to come back for more learning tomorrow. Friday, December 5th , started with a continental breakfast, welcome and announcements. For the first half of the day, group A of the conference participants were treated to the energetic and the sensible Starla Ewan of “Hands on Body Systems” . Starla, gave them lots of classroom management skills while teaching how life begins and the neural and physical process that goes with that…all with the help of clay. Our Friday general sessions included: • • • • Starla Ewan, Hands On Body Systems – “A single cell to body systems, the making of a human being” Lynne Clarke, Aiken Regional Medical Centers, A.R. Johnson Magnet School, Augusta, GA. – “Make your students multi-skilled” Kristen Medlin, Aiken Regional Medical Centers – “Current Hiring Practices in healthcare” Lorraine Faulds, SC Department of Employment and Workforce – “Gnarly Data Dude! Using Labor Market Information to Help Make Career Choices” Saturday, December 6th, began with a full southern breakfast followed by our silent auction drawings to fund the HSE/HOSA scholarships that are given to students at our HOSA State Leadership Conference in March. After the silent auction we held the business meeting for SC HSE where there was one position up for nomination. (President-Elect) One person was nominated for 2015-16 President – Elect position, a quorum of members voted and the motion carried to elect Shana Lee to this position. The new officers are listed below. Before our SC HSE business meeting we welcomed keynote speaker, Dr. Teresa Hamm, an instructional coach from Pendleton High School. Dr. Hamm’s keynote address is titled “CTE is the new AP: The Journey That Moves Us Forward.” Dr. Hamm was energetic, engaging and had a lot of information to share about the career and technology pathways. So for us, this hit home. After a quick break to check out of our rooms, our conference participants were able to visit our connection stations on a variety of subjects. Station 1- Janice Racoosin: Station 2- Lisa Hallman “FUNdraising Can Be FUN!” Station 3- Shana Lee “How to Utilize Technology in the Classroom” Station 4- Debbie Teusch “Incorporating Sochi Into Lesson Plans” Station 5- Jackie Cooley-Finger: "The Advantages of Joining SCACTE" Station 6- Katrina Haynes: "Technology Update from NHSE Conference Approximately one hundred health science teachers enjoyed the networking and professional development opportunities again this year. Thirteen vendors provided their latest curriculum resources in our exhibition area on Thursday and Friday.
