WELCOME
Welcome to the ParishEXTEND Summer Catalog!
At Parish, we believe exciting learning extends well
beyond the confines of the school day or even the school
year. Fueled by this belief, we initiated ParishEXTEND,
one of Parish’s distinctive signature programs, in 2010
as a means to offer innovative after school and summer
enrichment, challenge-based programs and academic
support services to students in a wide range of subject
areas.
The beauty of ParishEXTEND is in the richness of our
programming. We actively seek to form partnerships with
a host of dynamic local and national program providers
in areas such as the arts, STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math), fitness and academics. In addition, passionate members of the
Parish faculty contribute their talents. The result? A learning experience which taps into
your child’s interests and stimulates his or her mind outside the traditional school day
and calendar.
ParishEXTEND Summer combines the dynamic academic and enrichment
programming of ParishEXTEND with a series of summer camps to create a unique
array of options for your child. From our traditional all day camp featuring memorable
theme-based activities to half-day camps in athletics, the arts, STEM and academics,
ParishEXTEND Summer offers stimulating, fun and cost-effective learning and social
activities for your child.
We are equally proud that ParishEXTEND works in tandem with another of Parish’s
leading signature programs, ParishVirtual. The ParishVirtual Summer Academy offers
blended courses (many for credit) for Upper School students. You will find these
courses described in this catalog as well.
We are pleased that our incredible facilities remain so vibrant and alive during the
summer! I look forward to seeing your child and you on campus this summer enjoying
the ParishEXTEND experience!

WHAT’S NEW ?
WHAT’S NEW THIS SUMMER?
Level-Up-Village Parish Episcopal School is the first school in the U.S. to formally partner with
global educator Level Up Village (LUV). As a Founding Partner, Parish will offer four of LUV’s global
STEM-based courses including Global Change Makers in Training, Global Doctors in Training, Global
Inventors in Training and Global Scientists in Training. Each course includes hands-on scientific
exploration and the chance to communicate and collaborate with students at a partner school in
developing countries. Parish will operate as a year-round LUV program site.
Nike Field Hockey Camp This half or full day girl’s field hockey camp sponsored by Nike and
U.S. Sports Camps will introduce you to field hockey or take your game to the next level. Instruction
provided by prominent high school and college coaches as well current and former collegiate players.
ParishEXTEND Summer Arts Academy A wide variety of visual and performing arts classes
for Prek through 12th grade taught by arts professionals including Parish faculty Kevin Ash, Jeff
Crouse, Ingrid Geisler, Beka Johnson, Alyssa Kassler, Ruth Keefer and Jessica Jackson Robinson,

Big Bang Theory
Grades K - 4, 5 - 8
Week 9
In Brazil it’s called “Jogo Bonito – The beautiful game” and
this summer Parish Soccer has joined with Soccer Futebol
with the goal to bring every player closer to this ideal - with
an emphasis on fun first.
Focused on building individual skill and confidence on
the ball, this camp is designed to serve players of any
ability from beginner to seasoned veteran. Our camp’s
skills training focuses on: receiving the ball, maintaining
possession, efficient and creative ball movement, and
finding the back of the net! Using individual and small
group activities, we offer maximum touches on the ball
within fun, competitive games. There is very little standing
still. Our coaches are experienced with players of all ages
and will model the skills and effort we want to see in your
player. The camp is designed and run by Craig Savage
and Giampaulo Pedoroso.
Craig Savage is Parish’s head soccer coach and has 19
years’ experience coaching high school, club, and Olympic
Development soccer in Atlanta, GA., and Dallas. Many
of Coach Savage’s former players have gone on to play
in college, and a few of his Olympic Development players
have advanced to the professional ranks. All of them have
enjoyed improving under his tutelage. After winning state
titles and becoming the all-time winningest coach at Holy
Innocents’ Episcopal in Atlanta, Coach Savage moved to
Dallas, where his Parish Panthers have never failed to
make the playoffs.
Giampaulo Pedroso (“GP”) is a native of Niterói, Brazil,
and director of operations for Soccer Futebol. After a
decorated playing career at SMU in the early 1990’s, GP
enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a player in

Connecting the Dots: Pivotal Moments in
American Foreign Policy
Grades 10 - 12 Week: ParishVirtual Summer Session
Was the sinking of the Lusitania by German U-boats
the introduction of a terrible new kind of war that would
culminate in the first decades of the 21st century? Was
the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese aircraft the first of
a long series of intelligence breakdowns and form familiar
repeating pattern through the decades of the 20th century?
Did the Korean War bring into existence a new form of
American government, The Heavily Militarized American
“National Security State” unbeknownst to the American
people? Was the Cuban Missile Crisis an unintended
consequence of Kennedy’s “prestige race” for outer
space? Was the first war of the 21st century fought on
October 6, 1973? This course asks students to reflect on
these questions and others like them to provide historical
context for reasons explaining why we live in the kind
of world that we do today. This course will receive .333
credits in History.

Level Up Village: Global Inventors in Training
Grades 6 - 9
Weeks 2, 10
Students in this course will learn how to use the
engineering design process and knowledge about
electricity to create an invention for social good. They
will harness the power of 3D printing to prototype their
inventions and see how it might be used in a real life,
global context.
Students will explore electricity from many angles: From
the perspective of great historical inventors (such as
the Wright Brothers, and Thomas Edison), the vantage
point of their partner school students, and from a hands
on experience experimenting with how electricity works. 3D printing will both support and make this learning
applicable. During each class, students will learn how to
use a 3D printer with the design software, Tinkercad (or
another suggested CAD software) to support a handson understanding of the manufacturing phase of the
engineering design process.
Relying on the engineering design process, students
will synthesize what they learn throughout this course to
create a book light for use in their partner student’s home
community. Over the course of several classes, they will
prototype designs and put the iterative process to work
as they discuss, compare and contrast designs with one
another.
This class gives students the tools to be creative and
knowledgeable INVENTORS.

Level Up Village: Global Scientists in Training
Grades 3 - 6
Weeks 4, 8
Clean water. Nearly one billion people on our planet lack
access to it. This class arms young people to be a part of
the solution to this crisis.
We begin with an exploration of the unique properties of
water. No drop of what we drink of it is a new drop. It
has always been in our water cycle. Not to mention water
dissolves most basic rules of chemistry. Students explore
the special things that water can do at the molecular level
using hands-on experiments and 3D kits that make the
learning feel more like playing! They explore our global
relationship with water through interactions with their
partner school students. Together students move from the
theoretical to the applicable, constructing a working aquifer
to better understand how we get, use and sometimes
pollute ground water. Then our young scientists delve
into an exploration of the innovations that are part of the
solution to our water crisis. They will create two different
kinds of water filters as part of that process. Students
keep their aquifers at the end of class!

COURSE DESCRIPTION
ParishVirtual FAQs
What does the term ‘blended (or hybrid) learning’
mean?
Blended (or hybrid) learning is a combination of traditional
instruction in a classroom setting and innovative, online
course work.
How do classes meet online?
Online components of ParishVirtual courses are
asynchronous: students log-on whenever they choose and
complete their course work. From time-to-time, students
may choose to meet virtually (via Skype, for example)
to coordinate assignments and projects that require
collaboration.
How do classes meet face-to-face?
Classes meet typically for 1.5 hours on a weekly basis.
There is a set schedule for each class which can be
referenced on the website, www.parishepiscopal.org/
summerextend.
How much time do ParishVirtual courses typically
require?
Students should plan to invest approximately 5-7 hours
per week online to complete assignments in each course.
In addition, each course has its own expectations with
regard to the number of face-to-face meetings. While
ParishVirtual courses do expand the work and interaction
classes have beyond the traditional classroom, there are
still a minimum number of face-to-face classes students
are required to attend.
How are ParishVirtual’s blended classes taught?
ParishVirtual’s teachers create their own course materials;
connect students to relevant content gathered from a
variety of sources; and curate online material for students’
use.
Classes are delivered online using a learning management
system called Edmodo to facilitate engagement, interaction
and collaboration among students and connect students
to their teacher for structure and support. Edmodo also
enables teachers and students to connect efficiently to
a wide variety of online learning tools. Blogger, Diigo,
Google sites, Prezi, Slideshare, Wikispaces and Wordle
are among the more popular tools that enable students
and teachers to collaborate, create, and share online.
by-unit to help students manage their schedules and take
ownership over their learning process.
Do students earn credit?
Yes, students earn Parish credits that can be transferred.
It is up to school leaders at your school, however,
to determine what type of credit students may earn.
ParishVirtual course descriptions denote types of credit
earned at Parish: some courses earn credit toward
graduation; some courses earn departmental credit; and
some earn elective credit.
ParishVirtual courses are unique because they involve
blended learning: a combination of traditional instruction in a
classroom setting and innovative, online course work.
These courses are designed, developed, and taught by
teachers from Parish Episcopal School. Students will
receive Parish credit for each course – please check with
your school administration in advance to be sure that credits
transfer.
Courses listed below vary in length. Courses that earn .333
credits are equivalent to one trimester; courses that earn
.5 credits are equivalent to one semester; and courses that
earn 1 full credit are equivalent to a full academic year.
The dates listed as part of each course description refer
to the weeks in which face-to-face classroom sessions will
be offered. “Hours expected per week” is a guideline for
planning how much time to invest (both online and face-toface) in order to meet instructors’ expectations.
If you are interested in taking a ParishVirtual Summer
Academy course, please first consult your academic advisor
at school and discuss the choice with your parents or
guardians.
When you have questions about any of the current course
offerings please e-mail Marc Addington, Director of
ParishVirtual, at [email protected].
Online learning empowers students to develop flexible
schedules to complete assignments. In short stretches; for
hours at a time; early in the morning; late at night; at home;
on vacation: students can work anytime and anywhere a
connection to the Internet is available.
Classes are teacher-paced with soft deadlines: teachers
design activities and assignments that engage students
and encourage students to collaborate online. Teachers
offer pacing recommendations week-by-week and unit-
