Thursday, November 14th, 7pm,
at The Center on the Common,
(old Harvard Library), Harvard,
MA. Guests welcome! Here is
a unique opportunity for members to sell your wares, share
your business story and learn
more about your colleague’s
businesses – and have fun doing
it. Although not mandatory, you
are encouraged to bring whatever props you may need to
convey your work: displays,
actual wares, brochures, or just a
short talk. No probs, no prob. Do
come! Non members are welcome to attend to try out WBN,
but unfortunately displays are
limited to members.

evening will include soup by

Today is our birthday! Action Unlimited is 43 years old!
November 8, 1970 is the date of our very first paper. It is
always a time to reminisce. I remember my father helping
build out the boards for laying out the paper in our Maynard office on Nason Street. It was very difficult to leave them
behind when we moved to West Concord to a bigger office.
He did such a great job.
I remember some of our first advertisers who are really
responsible for Action Unlimited’s success. Sumner from
Maynard Outdoor Store was instrumental in getting the
paper started. He ran a full page in our paper each week.
Now, his daughter, Amy carries on the traditions he began.
Another supporter was George from Maynard Market. He
ran a ½ page every week until his store closed almost 30 years
later. Pat Forsyth ran a ½ page in the real estate section. He
struggled to gather all the information from his customers
because there were no faxes or internet in those days. Everything was done with pencil and paper. Acton Concord Chevrolet, under the ownership of Sid Laffin, took the first front
cover and now the tradition continues as Colonial Chevrolet.
I have a lot to be thankful for as we approach the
Thanksgiving holiday in just a few weeks. So many people
have helped make Action Unlimited successful. Barbara
B. has worked for me for over 40 years and Pam K just
celebrated 31 years at Action this week! Both have supported
me in so many ways throughout the years. Other employees do such a great job and help make Action what it is today. Thank you Joe, Barbara L, Jean A, Pam B, Claire, Leslie,
June, Nahid, Karl, Phil, Sarah, and all for your dedication to
making Action a success.
But, most of all, thank you READERS! Without your
support, there would be no reason to continue on. A lot of
changes have occurred over the years but one thing has not
changed: the need for your support. Your support of Action
and the advertisers who run in our paper each week make a
difference. It is unusual for a business to continue under one
ownership for 43 years. It only happens because you continue
to make purchases from our advertisers and let them know
that you love Action. You take the “Support our advertisers”
that we run in our paper quite literally.
Our newest product is the American made, locally sold product that we call a “Wish book”. Be sure and look for this year’s
Wish book at participating merchants in two weeks. In it are
local vendors selling American made products. We have a
local bank, Marlboro Savings, sponsoring the book and a
local grocer, Roche Brothers, helping us distribute it. By
purchasing from our local merchants you help the local
economy. Money spent with local stores stays in the area.
Thank you for helping us continue to carry on the tradition
of LOCAL and for supporting this paper with your purchases.
Action appreciates it and I know our advertisers do.

Center In November?
Restoration Project, www.restorationproject.org, is an award
winning nonprofit vocational
rehabilitation program for individuals with mental illnesses and
brain injuries. We recently put
Exercise and More… all ready
for you to stop by and enjoy.
How about getting in shape
for the Winter? Now that Fall is
coming to an end, it may not be
as easy as it was to go out for a
walk, or to work in the yard. If
you feel the need for some level
of exercise, we can help.
We have Senior Fitness classes that include weight training
and Pilates geared towards each
individual’s needs. If you are
a “working senior”, the classes
are held on Tuesday Nights at
5:30 PM . If you have time in
the morning, try Weds at 8:30
AM. On Thursday AMs, we have
CHAIR YOGA from 9-10. Have
trouble getting up off the mat,
NO PROBLEM. We use chairs
not mats. It’s relaxing and helps
with your flexibility.
If you want to get rid of
stress, we also have Qigong on
Mondays from 11:30- 12:30. It
helps your mind, body and spirit
to relax and feel free. It is also
is good for balance so you can
minimize the likelihood of falling when you are walking in the
snow/Ice.
Also important to seniors is
relaxation and socialization.

Winter Workshops At
Artsnashoba
It has been a busy fall at
ArtsNashoba Regional Arts
Center for Youth, having enjoyed
GrotonFest early on, followed by
three workshops (one performing and two visual arts), along
with a full student art exhibit at
SpringHill Suites by Marriott in
Devens. The colder days aren’t
slowing this group down, however, as there’s much still to
come before year’s end, including three more workshops geared
toward young performers! To see

workshop “Monologues & Public
Speaking” with JulieAnn Govang
will be held in the Fireplace
Room at the Parish House, Union
Congregation Church, 220 Main
Street in Groton. Says Govang,
“Preparing for an audition,
speaking engagement, or class
presentation is NOT EASY!
Preparation of your material is
key, but what’s MORE crucial?
Preparing YOURSELF, especially for those who are a bit
shy or more introverted.” This
workshop is an opportunity to
take a short reading or monologue, present it to the class,
and discuss how to make it (and
you) as well-received as possible. Advanced memorization
requested, but not required. $10/
person. Recommended for ages
10 and up. Class Limit: 25.
Following on December 9th,
from 6:00-8:00pm, Govang
will conduct another performance workshop – “Building a
Character” in the Page-Hilltop
Elementary School Cultural Arts
Room, 115 Washington Street in
Ayer. Recommended for ages 8
to 13 (though all are welcome),
this “learning by playing” workshop focuses on being someone
or something else, and how a
young actor can help do that.
“Simply put, acting is pretending,” Govang says. “An actor
pretends to be someone or something else to fill a role in a story.
The trick is all in how the actor
‘becomes’ who or what they’re
supposed to be! There’s no
switch to flick or button to push.
They must build a character to
become a character.” This workshop will touch on the process of
creating a character, and then with games and activities - allow
young actors to create different
characters for different situations
and very fun ways. $10/person;
$7 siblings and Page-Hilltop students. Class limit: 25.
Closing out the workshops
for the season, an integral evening is planned for those who
may be considering participating in Spring school productions, or in ArtsNashoba’s inaugural full-scale musical coming
in March’14. “Auditioning for
a Musical” with music director Jason Whiting will be held
December 16, 6:00 -9:30pm, at
the First Parish Unitarian Church
Vestry, 1 Powder House Road in
Groton. This workshop addresses the questions, “Are you confident when you audition for a
musical?,” “Did you choose the
right song?,” “Are you presenting yourself well?,” as well as
“What is a director looking for
in an audition?” This workshop
will touch on all these things,
give an opportunity for participants to try out an audition*
that they’ve prepared, or learn
as a group singing together and
asking questions about the process. $15/person; $12 siblings.

4 chicken thighs, skin removed
Peanut oil
2 tablespoons Tim Love Poultry
Rub (or your favorite poultry rub)

2 cups large dice sweet potatoes

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 red chile, minced

large saucepan half full of water

Volunteers must pass a criminal background check and commit to attend one meeting a

tricks can help a popular comfort food—the grilled cheese
sandwich—come out great every
time.
For example, brush the tops
of your bread with ultrasoft or
melted, unsalted butter for even
cooking. Using quality bread is
important. You should shred or
grate cheese when it’s cold (easier to handle) but cooking cheese
at room temperature is best for
quick melting. A couple of super
meltable cheeses that are available presliced are Jarlsberg and

pan to get that crispy, goldenbrown crust. Always cook on

be held at the historic Williams
Barn at 160 Chicopee Row in

Servings’ annual fall bake sale,
now celebrating it’s 21st year!
Each November since 1993,
Boston’s best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels donate
thousands of pies that over 600
volunteers then sell to family,
friends and colleagues. Each pie
costs $25, providing a week’s
worth of hearty home-delivered
meals to a Community Servings’
client and a tasty Thanksgiving
treat to the buyer. Pie in the Sky
2012 raised over $575,000 with
$.93 of every dollar raised going
directly to Community Servings’
programs. Through 21 years
of Pie in the Sky, Community
Servings has raised $6.5 million
to provide hundreds of thousands
of meals to critically ill neighbors who are too sick to shop or
cook for themselves.
Team 3.14 is a family effort
started by The Murphy family of
Groton. Jake, Cooper and mom,
Beth Lindstrom are the team
members, although oldest son
and team member Cam Murphy
is at college now.
