OUR CAUSE
IN ACTION
CANANDAIGUA YMCA
2012 - 2013
Annual Report
Dear YMCA Friends:
As a YMCA Our Cause is to strengthen our community. Thanks
to your support together we’re building a stronger environment
to call home. By focusing on youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility, we enrich lives while addressing
critical community needs.
We believe in the strength and synergy that results from our
collaborations. We understand that no organization can do it
alone. As we look to the future we know that we can
dramatically increase quality of life around community issues
such as obesity, the achievement gap, chronic disease and
poor family situations, by coming together.
We have always believed that our work makes a difference in
the lives of those we serve and we are now able to focus more
intensely on the actual outcomes. Many of our members and
participants participated in the Base Metrics Survey
program of Seer Analytics. This new approach allows us to
measure our impact and improve over time. We hope to use
this information to gain support for new initiatives and
remain a strong provider of services that reflect our promise of
accountability and excellence.
Perhaps our most important accomplishment during the past
year was the outstanding work completed by our dedicated
volunteers. Our volunteers used a hands-on approach to take
on some large projects. Volunteers got their hands dirty, met
with candidates for financial assistance, held a stop watch on a hot sticky pool deck or helped seniors
enjoy a nice picnic outside. There is a seemingly endless list of activities that engage our volunteers and
give them a close-up view of what really happens around the Y. This is the kind of dedication that keeps
our organization vibrant and growing.
We hope as you explore our annual report, you will share in our enthusiasm for the many meaningful
ways our Y has served the community. Organizationally, this past year was filled with changes, a new
Senior Program Director, a new Director of Business and Finance and a new Aquatics Director. Exciting
times are ahead and we hope that you will continue to grow with us.

OUR
Our Impact
Between April 1, 2012 and March 31,
2013 we gave $113,343 in financial
assistance to 1,875 individuals, providing
life changing opportunities through YMCA
membership, programs and child care.
CAUSE
Our cause on fiscal due
diligence is found through our
mission, so that all may have
the opportunity to learn, grow
and thrive together.

At the YMCA we have the amazing
opportunity to watch children grow up.
Isabelle Kester is one of those children.
She began coming here at 6 months old
for swim lessons, now at age four she is
a Pike and has graduated from the 3’s
preschool program.
“We have always felt comfortable at the
Y. From the first time we dropped
Isabella off at child watch to her first
swim lesson,” her mother Alison Grems
commented. “It comes down to the
people; the people truly care about her.”
Isabella and her family use the facility
on a daily basis. If they aren’t here the
staff worry. Not only is Isabella in a
variety of youth programs, the family
enjoys Friday Night Family Nights!
“The thing that Todd and I love is the Y
is a safe family environment. We know
that she will always be taken care of and
she will enjoy her time at the Y.”
Children are our future, we need to
nurture their young
minds to lead us to
a bright future.
on YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
All children and youth should be
given the opportunity to reach
their full potential in spirit,
mind and body.
We’re here to help make that
happen.
Our Impact
The Y improves lifestyles for thousands
of youth members and program
participants.

During the 181 school days, we spent
more than 10,000 ‘quiet’ hours with kids
helping and encouraging them with their
homework. At the Y we believe a students
success is our success.
121 different families came to the Y for
Friday Night Family Night. Families took
this as an opportunity to come together
and enjoy each others’ company.
49 young minds in our preschool
programs taught the adults that the world
has endless opportunities when you imagine.
This past year we encouraged all ages to
live a healthier lifestyle. Through new
programming, 200 kids ages 6 months 4 years moved their little feet in Sports
for Sprouts, Gym & Swim and Wiggles and
Giggles.
1200 children 6 months to 12 years old
improved swim skills, built confidence in
the water and learned personal safety
techniques.
OUR CAUSE OUR CAUSE
Our Story
on Healthy Living
Last August, Mary Wangler’s 16 year old
daughter told her mother she was
concerned about her mother’s health. It
was the turning point in Mary’s life.
“I promised my daughter that I would go
to the Y and start exercising.” For the
past 10 months Mary stuck to her
promise, but it definitely wasn’t easy.
“It was intimidating and I needed a little
motivation.” To help her move past this
plateau Mary contacted Amanda
Petroccione, one of our personal
trainers in the wellness center. Now her
son, Eric and husband both come to the
Y and train with Amanda. “Although we
live less than 10 minutes from the
Pittsford Y, we drive 25 minutes to train
with Amanda.”
The whole family can say that exercise is
a part of their life. “I feel fortunate that
my entire family can take part in all the
Y has to offer.”
We help children, families and
individuals embrace and achieve
lifelong healthy living habits to
improve quality of life.
Our Impact
The Y improves lifestyles for thousands
of members and program participants.


Everyday we educated, encouraged and
provided 238 healthy snacks to our after
school youth.
We provided support and improved quality
of life for active older adults through
additional group exercise classes like
Standing Abs and special AOA events,
including educational seminars on
maintaining a healthy spirit, body and
mind.
130 kids trained, competed and built
lifelong friendships on the Canandaigua
YMCA Aquatics team. The team had an
outstanding season finishing 2nd at
Districts, 3rd overall at States (best finish
ever). 6 kids went to Nationals and 7 to
the National Age-Group Swimming
Association Showcase Classic (NASA).
Each week more than 30 individuals, ages
16 and up, were given an individualized
exercise routine, coaching and extra
motivation to reach their goals through
personal training.
In March, 30 kids and 50 adults took part
in the Indoor Triathlon. It wasn’t about
finishing first it was about taking on a
challenge and succeeding.
Our Story
This past year we helped 1,854
individuals achieve their health and
well-being goals by giving them financial
assistance to become members or
program participants.
Janet Mamula, has volunteered her time
over the past nine years to meet with
individuals who need assistance. She
ensures everyone has an opportunity to
lead a healthy, whole life.
“It has been an honor to see our cause in
action,” said Mamula, who is set to retire
from the board in June 2013. “The hugs,
tears, joy and excitement I receive
because I’ve given them an opportunity to
lead a better life, is priceless.”
Janet and her husband, Bert, began their
time with the Y back in 1975 as members.
They are a staple in the community and
our Y.
It is volunteers like Janet, who
enable us to help more children, adults
and seniors in our community.
on Social Responsibility
Our cause helps us support and
give back to our community.
Our Impact
The Y strengthens community by
collaborating with local
organizations, officials and
businesses to address issues and
needs.




In October 2012, we teamed up with
Constellation Brands Marvin Sands
Performing Arts Center (CMAC) and
Thompson Health to provide a free flu
clinic to our community. More than
100 adults and children took this
opportunity to protect from illness.
Each April, Y’s across the nation host
Healthy Kids Day, a free event
encouraging youth to move more,
learn more and build a healthier
lifestyle. Our event brought 300 adults
and children in for a fun-filled day.
For the 23rd year we participated in
the Ontario Charities Classic Golf
Tournament, which supports the
Geneva, Clifton Springs and
Canandaigua YMCA’s. It is always a
great success because we’re able to
bring a whole county together.
We offer other local non-profits like
Rotary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and
local schools a place to stay, activities
and fun for different events. 33
classes from Canandaigua City School
District enjoyed a year-end field trip
here!
