Hello to all. April was certainly a busy month with many
calls/visits about the closure of the COPs Office, our

Great news! We have a new Vice President, Robert

Enrollment for our summer camps at Braeside Before &
After School Care has now begun. Program excursions
include Kayben Farms, swimming, Heritage Park, and
more. September registration is also open for Before &
After School Care so please contact our program at 403258-0699 to register.
Our big event in July will be our annual Stampede Breakfast on Saturday July 9, 2016. Volunteers are needed so
if you can help out please give Linda a call at our office

Heritage Time Out
Artisans in quilting, knitting, crocheting, card making and cross stitching meet to learn and practice
their art in a community setting. No experience is
required. Come and learn from instructors, obtain
advice, but mostly enjoy the company of women
across the ages, make friends and have a personal
time out! Wednesday mornings, 9:00 – 11:00
a.m., March 30 – June 22. Registration preferred,
but drop in available, babysitting supplied. Please
contact Sarah at (403) 918-3421 for further details.
The Million Question Challenge!
What is a puppy? How many dogs are there in the world?
What would happen if dogs grew wings and could fly?
Calgary Public Library has a new summer learning initiative for school-aged kids called The Million Question
Challenge! Kids will ask a million questions this summer, sparking curiosity and wonder. These questions
can be about anything and everything – we hope that
the questions will be personal and meaningful to each
child, and will spur them on to finding some answers,
too.
The kid who asks the most number of questions this
summer will win a $250 Toys R Us gift card and get to be
the Kid Executive Officer (KEO)of the Library for a day!
We have a ton of fun reading activities this summer, too!
Kids from 0-12 can join the TD Summer Reading Club
again this year, and read to win prizes. Teens can participate in this summer’s Youth Read. Get ready to read
& win all summer long! Visit calgarylibrary.ca for details.
Can you help?
There is a group of seniors who enjoy knitting mitts,
scarves, toques, and afghans. They donate them to nursing homes and various facilities in need of such items.
If you have leftover wool that you no longer need and
would like to donate it, kindly drop it off at the Community Centre. For more information, please call the Community office at 403-253-4232.
Adults can find great summer reads in both the We
Recommend collections and the Your Year of Reading
guides, available at your community library.
Smile… You could
be on camera!
Security cameras are installed at the Community Centre.
They are set up to monitor activity around the building,
rink area and dumpster. This will enable us to identify
those who choose to vandalize or paint graffiti on our
building or deposit personal garbage in the Community
Centre dumpster and allow us to take action.

Another amazing year is winding to a close soon but
that does not mean Woodcreek beavers, cubs and
scouts stop being active. In fact they are busy as ever!
With the weather getting warmer the kids activities are
held outside more often.
The best camp of the year was held at Camp Valaqua
on the April 16-18 weekend. This camp is very special as
most of the kids from beavers, cubs and scouts attend
the same camp together. This year’s theme was Star
Wars! This is a special time for all of them, beavers see
the older scouts sleeping outdoors and making fires.
Joint activities and games are held where the older kids
have to learn to work with the younger ones. It’s an excellent bonding and learning time for all of them.

Some activities that the beavers have been busy with lately were electronics take apart night, rollerskating, building
a planter and planting seeds, biking around Bebo grove
and clothespin crafts. The beaver year official ended April
20th with a barbeque at the community centre.
The cubs have also been busy with sessions on how to
build a fast cub car (this is very important and the cubs
take this very seriously),working on black star requirements, swimming at Southland Leisure Centre, SPCA
tour, rollerskating, planning for the annual soap box
derby in May and hiking.
The scouts have had a bunch of fun activities also that
included bowling, geocaching in Fish Creek Park- www.
familyfuncanada.com/calgary/geocaching-with-kidsin-calgary/ working on badges and the annual 18
wheeler races, sports and games at the community centre, rollerskating, soccer and rock climbing.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who donated
bottles to our second bottle drive in April. This year was
the first time we held a second bottle drive. Your generous support is very much appreciated.
The Woodcreek group is stellar with amazing Leaders already busy working on a great program for next
year. If this groups activities sounds like something you
would like your kids or yourself to be a part of please
feel free to contact our Group Commissioner Tim Tratch
at 403-251-4878. I’m sure you will not be disappointed.
Additional information about the Scouting program in

Calgary’s economic downturn is hitting people hard. The
baby and personal care items we have in stock are dwindling rapidly. We are in need of the following to share:
newborn and sizes 1 to 6 diapers and pull-ups, formula
and baby shampoo; for children, youth and adults shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste tooth brushes, bar soap
(Dove recommended), feminine hygiene products, deodorant, disposable razors, men’s shaving cream.

ANAM KAZIM
BRIAN PINCOTT
What does it mean to be flood ready? Higher river
flows typically occur in Calgary from the middle of May
to middle July. However flooding can strike any Calgary
community in any season, often with little or no warning. Interestingly this has less to do with spring run-off
from the mountains, and more to do with precipitation.
The City has plans in place that guide our response to
floods of various sizes. Every event is different and actions leading up to and during a flood depend on the
specifics of each event. In general, as a City, we take
these actions to mitigate the impact of a flood:
• Manage the flow of water out of the Glenmore reservoir
• Close the gates on storm water outfalls to prevent river
water from entering the storm system
• Deploy temporary lift stations to supplement pumping
• Deploy temporary berms, flood tubes or sandbags to
critical locations.
Last month, the City of Calgary held two open houses
to provide information to residents about on-going
2013 flood recovery efforts. This information is available
online if you missed the session at Calgary.ca/flooding,
along with resources on preparing yourself and your
community in the event of a flood.
Community building in your neighbourhood! June is
a busy month for Ward 11 communities. Be sure to check
your Community Association for their family-friendly
event listings – festivals, bike parades & Neighbour Day
events – just to name a few! Community clean-ups are
also underway from now until September. They are a
great way to meet your neighbours, and take a burden
off of your spring clean-out. See the full schedule at Calgary.ca/cleanup.
As mentioned last month, my team and I will host a community information session on Little Free Libraries on
Thursday, June 9th at 6:00 pm at the Voltage Creative
Garage, 2101 – 34th Avenue SW. Light refreshments
will be provided. We hope to see you there!
Remember to sign up for Ward 11 updates to receive
information on upcoming events, City programs, and
public engagement opportunities relevant to you at
www.ward11calgary.ca.
Dear Constituents:
The budget was announced on April 14th, 2016 and I would
like to highlight important aspects of the budget that are avenues towards Alberta’s success. Also, I would like to shed light
on my participation in the house during the session.
Budget 2016 Highlights:
Budget 2016 contains cost-savings measures, including freezing salaries for political staff and government managers as well
as reducing the number of government agencies, boards and
commissions to control the growth of operating spending.
At the same time Budget 2016 also introduces the new Alberta
Jobs Plan to help encourage job creation, business capital investment, and economic diversification. This plan has four pillars:
• Supporting families in times of hardship with new supports
and better access to training/ education;
• Continuing to invest in Alberta’s infrastructure through the
government’s Capital Plan;
• Diversifying our energy industry and markets by putting a
price on carbon, in addition to working to getting the best
value for our natural resources
• Supporting Alberta businesses with two new tax credits to
encourage access to capital and a tax cut by 1% for small businesses as of Jan 1, 2017.
My Participation in the House:
I was successful to have Motion 503 passed in the house which
is about making prescription drugs more affordable for lowincome seniors. To watch the debate please scroll to 4:57:37

I stood up to speak in favour of Bill 204: Alberta Tourism Week
Act to specifically promote Heritage Park, North Glenmore Park,
South Glenmore Park, Glenmore Sailing Club and Weaselhead
Park in our beautiful riding of Calgary Glenmore. To watch my
