Cooper has "blown away" Hollywood insiders, and sources tell us, "He's read the Gotti script and already has great suggestions for the role." Levinson wasn't the only one eyeing Cooper: "Solitary Man" directors Brian Koppelman and David Levien were at the screening and rumored to be looking at the UK star for their adaptation of the pickup handbook "The Game." Casting agent Amanda Mackey Johnson, who stocked "New Year's Eve," was also trailing Cooper, closely flanked by his agent, Joel Lubin, all night. The "Gotti" team had also considered James Franco, Johnny Depp and Jeremy Renner for the John Jr. role. A rep for the project had no comment. Paz de la Huerta Is thWearing Some Super-Skinny-Cut Pants By: Alex Rees/ Tuesday, July 26 2011 Paz de la Huerta attended a screening of The Devil's Double in New York last night wearing a pair of skin-tight, reflective, light-blue pants, which she paired with a sheer black, lacy blouse and black wedge heels. Besides the fact that they bear a slight resemblance to Olivia Newton-John's sexpot leggings from the final number of Grease, are these pants just too tight and shiny to work? Or can Paz, being Paz, pull them off? Eclectic Crew Turns Out for The Devil’s Double th By: Elyse Knutsen /Wednesday, July 27 2011 Dominic Cooper and Paz de la Huerta ―What you‘re going to see today is equal parts audacious, shocking, um, decadent and wildly entertaining,‖ announced Lionsgate exec Joe Drake before last night‘s screening of The Devil’s Double. An eclectic audience—including Dame Helen Mirren, designer Cynthia Rowley, actress Zoe Lister Jones, Nicole Murphy accompanied by ex-Giant Michael Strahan, and dynamic duo Ice-T and Coco —packed themselves into the SVA Theater Monday evening. Guests shook out their umbrellas and took their seats, ready to see a film that has been dubbed ―the Scarface of Arabia.‖ We saw Patricia Field make her way into the building wearing neon-green eyeglasses and matching sneakers. ―What inspired the green?‖ we asked the colorful designer. ―The red,‖ she replied, referring of course to her signature red tresses. The movie, based on a true story, is set in Iraq at the start of the first Gulf War as Saddam Hussein‘s sadistic son Uday commissions a body-double to make public appearances in his stead. Mama Mia! alum Dominic Cooper showed his flair for the dramatic, playing both the fanatical Uday and his soft-spoken fiday (body double). The Scarface analogy is certainly apt. Uday, by all accounts a true psychopath, led a life of lurid excess. He complemented his fleets of Ferraris with an unending supply of cocaine, booze and women he had snatched off the street. With Uday‘s penchant for erratic violence, some (literally) torturous scenes in the film were difficult on The Observer‘s constitution. Mem Ferda, who played the role of Saddam Hussein‘s friend Kamel Hannah, had a more lighthearted take on the movie, however. ―I think there are a lot of kind of tongue and cheek kinds of moments. The film isn‘t meant to be taken seriously, even though it kind of is about a serious topic,‖ the actor explained. Fair enough, but Mr. Ferda‘s character is brutally (and graphically) eviscerated by Uday at a dinner party. After the film and some hearty applause, the audience filed out of the theater and into the unseasonably brisk night. Some hailed cabs while others dutifully hoofed it to the Boom Boom Room for the after party. As usual, a crowd gathered downstairs and waited to be ushered in via the at-capacity elevators. Upstairs guests were soon intoxicated by the elegant set-up, not to mention the requisite open bar. The room‘s oft-noted views of the Manhattan skyline were taken in with sips of Champagne as the elevators disgorged partygoers. Waiters waded through the crowd, holding trays of sandwiches and cheeseburgers above the throng of wellcoiffed heads, while waitresses in white dresses with matching hair-bows did their best to deliver drinks, and Red Bulls. We ran into to photographer and director Nev Schulman near the deejay booth where he snatched passing snacks. Asked if he liked the film, Mr. Schulman smiled. ―It was a great story!‖ he said after a few telling moments of silence. Paz de la Huerta, however, was quite smitten with the movie and its star, Mr. Cooper. ―I feel like Dominic is a tour de force,‖ she said, using the term obliquely. ―He‘s an amazing actor. If anything comes from the film, you know which I feel is a very important film, you know … that‘s something that has not been explicitly shown, the pain and the horror these people go through…,‖ she drifted off. Snapping back from her dazed reverie, she squealed, ―But this guy was a creep!‖ More articulate than Ms. de la Huerta, Mr. Cooper looked downright dapper in his trim suit. Chatting with us, he described the ethos of the film and the difficulty of playing an Iraqi psychopath. ―The honest truth is that I couldn‘t relate to his actions or anything that he did. He was repulsive,‖ Mr. Cooper said. ―I needed, in very small doses, to think about why the man was the man he was, why he behaved the way he did.‖ Playing the role of the body-double, Latif, Mr. Cooper said, provided a much needed psychological reprieve. Filming the two characters at once, however, was dizzying. ―There was no sitting around. I would literally jump from being in the most insane space in my head to being much more of an observer, and a caring and thoughtful man.‖ Mr. Cooper, bombarded by congratulatory guests, was barely able to leave the entrance of the club all night. He good humouredly chatted with everyone who approached, taking photos with starry-eyed and slightly tipsy revelers. A bevy of self-described ―models‖—who could have been members of a sorority headed by Coco—ringed a corner table. One of the ladies helped her friend mount the three stairs to the seating alcove, her dress being so tight as to prevent simultaneous lateral and vertical motion. Before long, the group, now sufficiently drunk, began dancing around the room. ―This is, like, my fifth glass of champagne,‖ a visiting Spainard in a see-through dress confided. Another, who had been repeatedly mistaken for hip-hop muse Amber Rose, grabbed hold of our arm, spun us around and critiqued our look. ―What are we going to do with you?‖ she asked rhetorically. ―Darker eyebrows and fuck the highlights!‖ she answered excitedly, giving our locks a tussle. (As it happens, we do not have highlights.) By midnight, the crowd had thinned out, revealing once more the familiar skyline. Shuffle. Cram. Elevator. Until next time, Boom Boom. A Charming Evil Despot th By: Jennifer Mascia/ Saturday, July 30 2011 After watching Dominic Cooper play the sadistic despot-in-training Uday Hussein, as well as his body double, in the film ―The Devil‘s Double,‖ it was somewhat jarring to find ourselves chatting easily with him on Monday night at a meatpacking district hot spot moments after seeing the wrenching movie. Guests glided down the red carpet at the premiere; Patricia Field flashed lime-green loafers at the press; and the newly minted reality TV stars Ice-T and Coco Austin breezed by without a word. Helen Mirren avoided the red carpet altogether. We chatted with Mr. Cooper at the after-party at the Top of the Standard. The performance had been so convincing that we were slightly scared that he might flip into the despotic alter ego at any moment. But he was pleasant as he chatted about his other film, ―Captain America,‖ which eclipsed ―Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2‖ last week at the box office. ―Well, seeing as I never got a job in a Harry Potter film, I‘m very pleased,‖ he said. (Was that rancor in his voice? Were we a goner?) And going to Comic-Con? ―The craziest thing I saw was Superman and Spider-Man passed out, vomiting on the street corner at 2 in the morning,‖ he said. (Because he‘d poisoned them? we briefly wondered, before reminding ourselves — again — it was just a film.) Aching for Amy th By: Tara Palmeri/ Wednesday, July 27 2011 Amy Winehouse seemed to be on everyone's mind at the after- party for the premiere of "The Devil's Double" on Monday night as her songs played at the Top of the Standard. British actor Dominic Cooper, who starred in the film, told us, "I live right next to her. I drink in the same pub that she drinks in and I lived where she lives. It's shocking." Cooper plays an Iraqi army lieutenant ordered to become a body double for Saddam Hussein's son. th By: Carson Griffith/ Wednesday, July 27 2011 Dominic Cooper wants to set the record straight. "I didn't try to seduce Helen Mirren," the 33-year-old actor told us Monday at "The Devil's Double" screening at SVA Theater. Cooper said reports that he tried to woo the 66-year-old, whom he starred alongside in the play "PhŠdre" two years ago, were "taken out of context." "All I'm saying is she has absolutely no interest in me," Cooper explained, elaborating that he was "very annoyed" Mirren didn't "fancy" him when they worked together. It wouldn't have been the first time he romanced a co-star: The Brit dated "Mamma Mia" actress Amanda Seyfried for two years before the pair split. th By: Charles Thorp /Thursday, July 28 2011 Dominic Cooper greeting guests at the door of his Peggy Siegal Company-hosted party for the new Lionsgate thriller Devils Double at the Top of the Standard in New York. 5 Reasons to See „The Devil‟s Double‟: A True Story of Money, Power and Opulent Decadence th By: Haley Draznin /Thursday, July 28 2011 Tired of sequels, romantic comedies and just mindless movies? Check out Dominic Cooper‟s new flick! With all the summer movie talk about the thrilling saga of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, hotties Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis in romantic comedy Friends With Benefits, and funny flick Horrible Bosses … squeeze in some time to check out The Devil’s Double. HollywoodLife.com attended the NYC premiere of The Devil’s Double at the Peggy Siegal hosted screening on July 25 at the SVA theater. Dominic Cooper. Need I say more? The absolutely adorable 33-year-old phenomenally portrays Uday Hussein – the notorious ‖Black Prince‖ and son of Saddam Hussein – a reckless, sadistic party-boy with a rabid hunger for sex and brutality. Up until now, Dominic is probably best known for playing the (memorably shirtless) boyfriend, Sky, from Mamma Mia! and for dating costar Amanda Seyfried. Did I mention Dominic Cooper? Not just one, but two outstanding performances from the young British actor. In The Devil’s Double, as the title suggests, Cooper also channels Hussein‘s real-life doppelganger: Latif Yahia, a lookalike army lieutenant forcibly ordered to serve as Uday‘s ―fiday,‖ or body double. His dual role is a breakout opportunity for the star, who emerges as a riveting actor in the changes of vocality of the two men. The tone and pitch differentiates between them; Uday speaks with a higher voice, and properly because he‘s had a better education and Latif‘s voice is much lower to make him more stable and calm. Who doesn‘t love a good gangster movie? The film has been coined ―Baghdad‘s Scarface.‖ Distributor Lionsgate is marketing it as the second coming of Scarface, with a poster of a gilded Cooper holding gilded machine guns atop a throne. History Buff? The Devil’s Double is based on a true story. Set in decadent eighties Baghdad, the film takes you back to the lascivious, debauched, barbarous world of Saddam Hussein‘s Iraq. The luxurious lifestyle of the ―royal family‖ takes the screen. Armani, Cartier, Ferraris galore… The after party following the film was held at the Top of the Standard. Ice T and wife CoCo, Michael Strahan, and designer Patricia Fields were among the guests. The film hits theaters July 29 — this is sure to be one thriller that you won‘t want to miss. Coco Channels Barbie in Hot Pink Pumps th Tuesday, July 26 2011 Coco and Ice-T attend the New York premiere of "The Devil's Double" at SVA Theater on July 25, 2011 in New York City. No party night is complete without Coco and Ice-T! The dynamic duo attended the New York premiere of The Devil's Double in their signature style. Coco donned a pair of neon pink pumps and a psychedelic butterfly print body-con dress. Hot pink lips and matching earrings completed Coco's look. We've spotted other celebrities with similar heels, including Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, and Eva Longoria. John Gotti Jr: Could Be “Devil‟s Double” Star Dominic Cooper th By: Roger Friedman Tuesday, July 26 2011 The talk last night at the premiere of ―The Devil‘s Double‖ was about a very Oscar buzzed performance by Dominic Cooper as Uday Hussein. Cooper is just terrific in ―Devil‘s Double,‖ which launches on Friday on a wave of good talk from Sundance. But wait: the talk was also that Cooper, who‘s actually been turning down roles all spring, may join Barry Levinson‗s ―Gotti‖ as John Gotti Jr. This means he‘d play the son of John Travolta. What a great idea. ―Gotti‖ — rewritten by James Toback– is turning into a much better project as it nears its shooting schedule. Adding Cooper would be a stroke of genius. The Gotti‘s may not be sympathetic, but cast with good actors this movie has a chance. Levinson and Toback have really upped the game. Cooper is free at the moment, having finished up ―Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter‖ with Ben Walker. Meantime, ―The Devil‘s Double‖ gang got a great premiere last night with a party following at the Top of the Standard. Ice T, Michael Strahan, and designer Patricia Fields were among the guests… “The Devil‟s Double” Revs Up Manhattan th By: Nigel Smith/Tuesday, July 26 2011 Dominic Cooper (right) joined Lionsgate president Joe Drake (right) last night at a special New York screening of Lee Tamahori‘s brutal and exhilarating thriller ―The Devil‘s Double.‖ In the film, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, Cooper does double duty, playing both Iraqi army lieutenant Latif Yahi and Saddam Hussein‘s psychotic son Uday Hussein, whom Latif is ordered to impersonate. French actress Ludivine Sagnier also stars as Uday‘s seductive mistress who falls for Latif. The night kicked off with a packed screening at the SVA Theater and was followed by a suitably glam party at the Top of the Standard. Uday would no doubt approve. Among the guests that showed up in support of Cooper‘s great turn: Paz de la Huerta, Charles Ferguson, Patricia Field, Will Frears, Ice-T and Coco, Nikki James (Tony Winning Actress), Jeremy Kost, Barry Levinson, Zoe Lister-Jones & Daryl Wein, John Buffalo Mailer, Kevin Manno, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Missoni, Peter Riegert, Cynthia Rowley, Michael Strahan & Nicole Murphy, James Toback, and. Vicky Ward. ―The Devil‘s Double‖ comes out in limited release this Friday through Lionsgate. The New York Red Carpet Screening of THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE th By: Mara Siegler/Tuesday, July 26 2011 Where: SVA Theatre/Top of The Standard Who Was There: Dominic Cooper, Mem Ferda, Paz de la Huerta, Charles Ferguson, Patricia Field, Will Frears, Ice-T and Coco, Jeremy Kost, Zoe Lister-Jones & Daryl Wein, Kevin Manno, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Missoni, Peter Riegert, Cynthia Rowley, Michael Strahan & Nicole Murphy Other Details: British cutie and Amanda Seyfried ex, Dominic Cooper, who sang his way into our view in Mama Mia, shows off his darker dramatic side in this film about Saddam Hussein's psychotic son, the notorious "Black Prince" Uday Hussein and the man who played his double, Latif Yahia. Based on the true story, it also takes liberties, turning the tale of brutality into a Middle Eastern version of the gangster flick replete with women, fast cars, and gold plated trinkets. Dominic, playing both parts, shows he has real acting talent and the flick keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. It's good. I saw it and most often I'll always tell people to wait for DVD, but this is well worth the price of a ticket. After the film, guests head to Top of the Standard for drinks. Paz De la Huerta was there, proving she is not banned from the spot after getting in a cat fight with Samantha Swetra there, and, dressed conservatively in pants and a blouse, that she can make it through an evening without a nipple slip. Maybe court scared her? Not quite The Devil's Double: Dominic Cooper looks dapper at premiere of film in which he plays Saddam Hussein's evil son th By: Chris Johnson/ Tuesday July 26 , 2011 Suave: Dominic Cooper arrives to the New York premiere of his film The Devil's Double in which he plays Saddam Hussein's sadistic son Uday and official body double, Latif Yahia With his quiffed hair and trendy tuxedo suit, Dominic Cooper put in a suave and debonair turn at the premiere of his new movie, The Devil's Double. There might have been nothing evil-looking about the 33-year-old actor at the New York event last night. But on screen he plays the part of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's sadistic son. In the movie, based on real life events, Cooper takes on the role of Uday Hussein as well as his official body double, Latif Yahia. Uday is said to have snatched girls from the streets of Baghdad to rape. He was eventually killed by U.S. forces in 2003. The movie explores the relationship between Uday and Yahia, an Iraqi soldier who was forced into the highest echelons of the Hussein regime and ordered to act as the Black Prince's doppelgänger. Yahia's role was to protect Uday from assassination attempts by standing in for him at certain events. He finally managed to escape from Uday's clutches in 1992, after fleeing. Yahia was captured by Kurdish rebels, who initially mistook him for Uday. But he was eventually released and granted asylum in Austria. In an interview with the BBC in 2009, Yahia called Uday Hussein 'worse than a psychopath' relating an incident where he mutilated a woman, who was later murdered and her body dumped. The Devil‘s Double, directed by Lee Tamahori, is released in UK cinemas on August 12 and in the U.S. on July 29. Spot the difference: Uday, who was killed by U.S. forces in 2003, pictured left in 1997 and, right, his official lookalike Latif Looking smart: Cooper slipped into a tuxedo suit teamed with silvery grey shoes and a quiffed hairstyle In character: Seen here in a still from the movie as the evil trendy Uday Dominic Cooper in The Devil's Double th By: Regina Weinreich/ Wednesday, July 27 2011 Mamma Mia's pretty boy, Dominic Cooper, turns ugly -- twice -- portraying the evil Uday Hussein, Saddam's sadistic psychopath son, as well as Latif Yahia, the Iraqi army lieutenant tortured into service as his body double. In sharp Armani suits, Cooper maintains a brutal edge for Iday, an enraged wounded soul for Latif. This accomplished performance, the first Oscar-worthy Best Actor of the year, begs the question, can an Academy Award go to a portrait of a despicable character? Yes, Forest Whitaker won for his deft portrayal of Idi Amin. At Monday night's premiere Patricia Field, Paz de la Huerta, Charles Ferguson, Peter Riegert and many others averted their eyes at some of the onscreen violence. Balancing Uday's outsized cocaine-fueled slaughter of anyone who crosses him, his abduction, rape, and murder of schoolgirls, his "seizing" whatever -- just because he can -- are glimpses of an exotic terrain and gangster-style Arab culture we rarely see. At the Standard Hotel after party, Dutch producer Michael John Fedun told me the film was shot in Jordan and Malta, near enough to Iraq to get the dry heat. Cooper was at the center, with filmmakers Barry Levinson and James Toback chatting about possible roles. The French actress Ludivine Sagnier, so good in Francois Ozon's The Swimming Pool, gives a fine performance as Uday's mistress who ends up fleeing Baghdad with Latif. She is a composite of several key women in the real life Latif's story on which this riveting film is based, as scripted by Michael Thomas, and directed by Lee Tamahori. Even now after Uday's death, Latif lives in fear of some maniac's reprisal for a history that is simply too out there to hide. While Dominic‘s ex Amanda Seyfried may still be nursing her broken heart after splitting with Ryan Philippe earlier this summer, Dominic seems to be stealing female hearts everywhere, especially after walking the carpet last night. Joined by hubby Ice-T, the 32-year-old reality TV starlet kept it relatively tame as she checked out the new Lee Tamahori-directed action flick that offers a chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein coming to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein‘s sadistic son. Meanwhile, it appears Coco is fan of demeaning and misogynistic comments. Last week, the busty beauty was spotted showing off a whole lot of skin as she sunned herself in a tiny string bikini in Miami. Days later when video of her vacay outing was aired on TMZ, one of the resident commentators went on and on about Coco‘s famous derriere, suggesting he‘d like to find a home inside of it.
