Farewell from
the Editor
Many of you are aware that I am
stepping down as newsletter
editor for the North Star Chapter;
a position I have held for the past
8 years. Some of you might recall
when I served as editor back in the
early 1990s as well. This is my last
issue and while I’m uncertain who
will replace me, I understand there is
interest from at least two members
to continue producing a news piece
for the club.
There has been a great deal of
satisfaction producing a publication
that is both informative and features
interesting stories about our membership and events. I realize that I
probably built this publication into
something larger than it needed to
be. But, at the same time, I felt there
was a need to provide a piece that
was of value to the membership and
showcased the North Star Chapter
to a broader audience. It was definitely an honor to be recognized by
the BCCA a couple years ago with an
award acknowledging our newsletter
as being among the best.
More importantly, I very much appreciate the input, article contributions,
and favorable comments that so
many of you have shared during my
time as editor of the North Star
News. As with any publication, it’s a
task that requires a lot of planning
to do it correctly. It’s also necessary
to gather items on a regular basis so
you always have material for future
issues. Without the contributions of
others, my job would have been
more of a challenge.
Thank you for the privilege of serving
the club. We will all need to support
the next editor in all areas.

Rusty Bunch at CANvention 45. Many NSC members made the trek to Milwaukee this year.
From the President
Well, here’s my last column as president. It’s amazing to me how long I have
been writing them (19 years)! It was never in my agenda to be the fearless leader
of NSC for that long, but that’s the way it worked out and I’m proud of all the
accomplishments the chapter has made in those years. Of course these things
could have never been done without the help of a lot of great people. Together we
all made the North Star Chapter on of the best chapters of the BCCA, ABA and
NABA. I think it was very evident again at GNT 42 along with the chapter’s other
events in 2015!
I want to personally thank everyone that has helped out at all our events during my
tenure — from our general membership to the board of directors and leadership of
all the national clubs. A few people though really went above and beyond the call.
My dad, Joe, and mother Delores (who passed away in 2006), were my biggest
supporters throughout the years. The club has also had several newsletter editors
in that time. Gerald Mitchell and Bob Jackson both worked hard to keep our
chapter’s traditions going. However, in my opinion, no one has done more and
influenced that position more than Brent Kastler! Without Brent our club would have
never been able to progress to the level it has in the last 10 years. I know how
much he gave of himself to keep this club on a strong path. Thank you Brent for
giving so much on a strictly volunteer basis.
Now it’s time for others to fill the leadership positions and I remain optimistic
that they can help keep the club strong, vibrant, and relevant into the future.
There are a lot talented people in the club!
Thank you Bob Jackson, Scott Kovar, Dave Sears, John Stejskal, Jeff Lonto,
Mike Mullally, and all the other past board members for your hard work and
dedication through my tenure. I’m confident that NSC will continue to be successful
into the future thanks to the people previously mentioned who paved the way for
new leadership and who will continue to help out.
Once again, I want to say that it has been an honor to serve this chapter for so
long. You are all like family to me and I’m sure we will remain connected by this
awesome club. To the new leadership — I will be your biggest supporter and
helper into the future.
Thank you all!

The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild
and the North Star Chapter
— a Great Alliance
by Jeff R. Lonto
One of the great alliances the North Star Chapter has forged
over the past few years has been with the Minnesota Craft
Brewers Guild. The Guild was founded in 2000 “to promote
Minnesota breweries, create an open line of communication
between brewers, and showcase local craft beer at our
events throughout the year.”
Two of the Craft Brewers Guild’s big annual events are the
Minnesota State Fair Craft Beer exhibit and the Autumn Brew
Review in Northeast Minneapolis near the Grain Belt brewery.
The North Star Chapter has had a presence at both of these
events, enhancing the Guild’s mission in promoting Minnesota
brewing by showcasing the history and heritage of Minnesota
brewing, with breweriana displays and presentations. Our
presence at these events have given the Chapter a tremendous boost in publicizing the club and the Guzzle ‘n Twirl
breweriana show to a whole generation of young adults
enamored with craft beer and the lore that surrounds it.
Dave Wendl has been displaying breweriana items from his
personal collection in locked display cases in the Craft
Brewers Guild section of the Agriculture Building at the
Minnesota State Fair for the past few years, and the displays
have been a big hit with the thousands of people who pass
through on a daily basis during the course of the fair. He
always makes a point of including a lot of Hamm’s Bear
items. That’s what tends to be most popular with the noncollecting public (as well as a lot of collectors). But he also
includes a wide variety of
items from all kinds of
Minnesota breweries big
and small, which strikes
further interest and
defines breweriana to
those who don’t really
know what it is. He also
makes flyers about the
club and for the upcoming
Guzzle ’n Twirl available
— and frequently has to
replenish them because
people snatch them
up quickly.

Craft Brewers Guild section at the
Minnesota State Fair.
4 North Star News
And in the past two
years, I have been giving
presentations about
breweriana and the club
at both the State Fair and
the Autumn Brew Review.
(I’m not a professional
At this year’s Minnesota State Fair in the Craft Beer exhibit, I gave
a presentation on older Minnesota beer cans. I also gave a pitch
promoting the North Star Chapter’s Guzzle ’n Twirl show.
speaker, but I’m not deathly afraid of doing it either.) This
year, my presentation at the fair was a look at some old
Minnesota beer cans and a few words about GnT. At the
Autumn Brew Review, I did a presentation on the history
of the Grain Belt brewery, which seemed appropriate
considering the location and my own area of specialty.
Representatives from the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild
have told us they very much appreciate our efforts, and want
us to keep doing it in the years to come.
So the next time the Craft Brewers Guild is having an event
(which always includes the sampling of locally brewed craft
beers), come out and support them, and say hi to us.

BCCA CANvention 45
by Brent Kastler
BCCA CANvention 45 proved to be one of the best attended CANvention’s in quite a
long time. Many North Star Chapter members were in attendance, so it was a fun
time to see a lot of friends in a different setting.
The show floor was large and it took time to cover it. I should have had a
pedometer to keep track of how miles I walked during the event. There was a
lot to take in and scout out.
I am convinced there were more high grade and exotic cans at this event than
I had ever seen in one setting before. A terrific array of excellent trays, signs,
lithographs, and other unique breweriana also were at CANvention. Even if you’re
not a serious collector it was like perusing a museum of beer artifacts.
Other highlights like the craft beer night and the rocking entertainment provided by
the Rusty Bunch made the evenings full of fun and energy. In many ways I enjoyed
the social aspect of the evenings more than hanging out at the show floor during
the daytime hours.
It was a great time for anyone who likes beer and is interested in collecting
beer-related stuff.

some of the unique brews during the craft
beer night at CANvention 45.
Quart cones anyone?
Above is a small sampling of vintage beer advertising signage that was available for sale at
CANvention 45. There were many awesome pieces to look over. A lot of unique breweriana to
be dazzled by.
Memories of CANvention #2
from John Kieran
Back in the late summer of 1972, my every day car needed a ring job real
bad. So, I left it in Burlington, IA, while I drove my 1934 Plymouth to Lake
Geneva, WI, never thinking a 38 year old car would not get me there and
back. Total round trip of about 500 miles and all was fine!
You will recognize the custom made banner behind me, the one given to
each President at the end of his/her year in charge. There were so few of
us that the bunnies posed for a picture at
each table. After the Saturday night meal,
an announcement was made that you could
go to a certain table to buy the picture, if
you had $3. Wow! — a lot of money then.
I suppose a few passed on the purchase.

GUZZLE
’N TWIRL
Another GREAT Show
The North Star Chapter really does
have something going with Guzzle ’n
Twirl. Once again, this year’s show lived
up to nearly everyone’s expectations.
The show continues to be the largest
breweriana show in the midwest with
around 950 people being involved in it
in some way. The general admission
walk-thru attendance eclipsed the
600 mark again which is why vendors
are eager to buy multiple tables at
this show.
Friday afternoon and evening events
began when the first person opened
their door at the hotel for room-to-room
buy/sell/trade. If you don’t usually
42
by Brent Kastler
attend the Friday events at the host
hotel, you’re missing out on some
pre-show deals by the vendors. There
are quite a few items picked up by
collectors which never make their way
to the Saturday show. It’s true that the
room-to-room activity is down from
what it once was years ago, but that
doesn’t diminish the possibility of
finding something of interest.
Friday’s hospitality included a wide
range of snacks and pizza with soda
pop and beer also pouring freely in the
“beer hospitality room”. I always note
that many guests enjoy the social time
in this area each year.
Saturday’s show began with
the general public being
admitted at 9 a.m. A line of
no fewer than 75 people
formed before the doors
officially opened. And thus,
the energy began with an
enthusiastic crowd streaming in to scope out the
wide array of breweriana
on hand.
A mini-raffle at noon and
the traditional 2 p.m. raffle
of breweriana prizes was
again very successful.
Some top-notch prizes
were available so interest
was high with the chance
of obtaining a special item
without spending a lot
of money.

The Saturday evening
dinner banquet was well
attended and the buffet
drew quite a few compliments. This
part of the show activities is a nice
way to top off the busy two days of
show excitement for guests and NSC
members alike.
Dave Wendl was awarded a fine piece
of breweriana for his lengthy service to
the North Star Chapter. It was much
deserved for all of his hard work and
efforts in leading the chapter and
coordinating this event for almost
two full decades. Being close to the
preparation that goes into Guzzle ’n
Twirl, I can attest to how much planning
and follow-up goes into running a show
of this size.
During the course of a year, I know that
Dave and Joe Wendl are repeatedly
checking with the host hotel and other
service providers to make sure no
details are overlooked. And, that’s why

might have been talking about beer, but my
guess is they were comparing their
wardrobe. Keep on marching Mr. Yost!
Variety is a word that best describes what you’ll find at Guzzle ’n Twirl. This arrangement is
pretty typical of a table set up you might see at the show.
I believe people continue to come to
this show. Many come from long distances and it’s because they know it
will be good and they know they will be
welcomed — usually on a first name
basis. Yes, it’s true what Dave said at
the Saturday evening banquet, “Many of
you have become like family to me for
all the years of seeing you and getting
to know you better at Guzzle ’n Twirl.”
