The
Club’s Annual General Meeting was well attended by 202
members on 11 September 2014, even though the AGM golf game
did not even get off to a start due to inclement weather. Nonetheless,
it was a good time to get together. One key feature that stood out
from the AGM was that the overall member satisfaction levels have
reached a record high. Well done to all the staff and management of
SCC. We would like to express our appreciation for all the feedback
and inputs given.
So as to upgrade the status of SCC, we would be hosting, for the first
time, the Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship in 2014. We
would utilise this event to level up our course markings to be on par
with national standards.
The year is coming to an end, do join us for the Chairman’s Cup and
the Countdown Party 2014.

Hello Everyone!
Once again, we find ourselves standing at the last quarter of the
year! It gets quite a bit scary when the months just fly by like that.
Where did all the time go? There were quite a few exciting things
that happened in the last few months, and many more things are
going to happen in the coming months. So let’s all take a deep
breath and take a look.
AGM 2014
Our Annual General Meeting was held on 11 September 2014.
The event was held in the Banquet Hall and was attended by
202 members, despite the inclement weather that completely
prevented us from enjoying the AGM Golf Game. This year, we saw
the re-appointment of some EXCO Members and the appointment
of some new EXCO Members. Among the new EXCO Members,
we are pleased to welcome on board COL (Ret) Alan Yeo Cheng
Ann as the Co-Chairman of the Engagement Committee, LTC
Ong Chew Meng as our Vice-Captain, LTC Chang Pin Chuan as
our Treasurer, and MAJ (Ret) Chan Siew Mun as our Assistant
House Member. We also welcome Mr Yong Shao Chang as the
new Competitions Convenor. We look forward to their guidance
and contributions as they bring our Club to greater levels. At this
point, I would also like to extend the Club’s sincere appreciation
to the EXCO Members who have served in the last term. They are
ME7 Chow Wai Yein, ME7 Lim Hoon Min, ME6 Sam Lee, and MAJ
Dickson Tay.
This year’s AGM saw the members being updated on the
achievements of the various committees, and also allowed the
EXCO to understand, clarify and address members’ concerns. It
was also very encouraging to hear that overall member satisfaction
levels have improved, and that we have reached a new high point
in overall satisfaction levels as evidenced by the Annual Survey
results. The AGM was followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner that
was part-sponsored by our F&B vendor, Oceanspoon.
Annual Survey 2014
In July and August this year, we engaged a consultant, aAdvantage,
to help us conduct a member satisfaction survey. First, let me
thank all of you who have participated in the survey. I understand
that some of you found the survey questionnaire long and tedious.
Unfortunately, this was necessary if we wanted to know precisely
what you were satisfied with, and more importantly, what you were
unsatisfied with. We therefore needed to go into some depth in

asking those questions so that we can take meaningful followup actions where necessary, to close the gaps in our service
standards. The other alternative would have been to conduct
many smaller surveys throughout the year, but we’ve decided
that that would subject our members to even more survey fatigue.
So I really want to thank you for taking the time to complete the
survey, and for being patient with us. Your inputs and feedback
are important to us, and would provide us with a catalyst to strive
for service excellence. The results of the survey were encouraging
and I’m pleased to note that members’ overall satisfaction is quite
high. In fact, this year, we scored the highest of the last three
years. It made all the effort that we had put in really worth it. It also
showed us that you were appreciative of the efforts we have put
in, and this spurs us to do even more and better for you. I’m proud
of my staff, and you should be proud of them as well – you were
the ones who gave them the good scores! As I’ve mentioned in my
speech at the AGM, we will not stop here and rest on our laurels.
We will take the continual journey of improvement and be even
better than we are today!
National Day Family Carnival
We held the National Day Family Carnival on 10 August 2014.
As the theme suggested, families were encouraged to come in
colours of Red and White. The whole Club was decorated with
buntings and national flags. The reciprocal golf game with KRTU
was also held on that same afternoon. It was really unfortunate
that CAT 1 lightning conditions affected the golf game and the
outdoor activities of the Carnival. But this did not stop the families
and children from enjoying the indoor activities. You could see
queues of people lining up for the free snack giveaways – ice
lollies, kacang puteh, and more. The art and craft stalls were also
popular with the kids as they created their own sand-art candles,
rainbow loom bands and charms, and bead necklaces and
bracelets. Despite the weather, the families had an enjoyable time
and are already looking forward to the next one.
President’s Cup 2014
The President’s Cup was held on the afternoon of 16 August 2014,
followed by a buffet dinner in the evening. Our Guest-of-Honour,
Club President and CDF, LG Ng Chee Meng graced the occasion.
We had very good prizes for both the golf winners as well as
the lucky draw – with prizes sponsored by Garmin and Cobra.
The participants enjoyed the beautiful weather, the excellent

golf course conditions, and of course, the lovely dinner. And the
winners went home with really good prizes like Garmin watches,
Cobra golf equipment, and other electronic items. We’ll try to get
sponsors for the Chairman’s Cup prizes as well – so do look out
for that golf event. It was quite a tough competition, but we could
only have one overall champion. We congratulate MAJ Dickson
Tay, the winner of the President’s Cup 2014.
Official Opening of Members’ Lounge
New beginnings – that’s what excites people. Following feedback
from our members, and after some renovations to the KTV Lounge
and improvements to the KTV sound system, the KTV Lounge
was renamed the Members Lounge. The Members Lounge was
officially opened by our Club President and CDF, LG Ng Chee
Meng on 16 August 2014, in conjunction with the President’s Cup.
Now, members can enjoy a refreshed look, and an improved KTV
sound system. The Members Lounge now certainly provides a
better ambience for members to have a drink, relax, and belt out
a couple of their favourite songs.
Outstanding Staff Award
The Outstanding Staff Award is a quarterly award that will be
presented to staff who have provided good service to our members
and guests. The nominees were taken from the compliments or
feedback that we received through our feedback channels (yellow
feedback form, website, etc). The winners of the Outstanding
Staff Award were then selected by a Selection Panel comprising
members of the Executive Committee and Sub-Committees.
For the quarter of July to September 2014, the winners of the
Outstanding Staff Award are Jay from the Golfing Reception, Vijay
and Yeo Ah Soo from the Facilities Department, and Saran from
the Golfing Department. Congratulations to all of them!
Thank you for all your nominations, compliments and feedback. Do
continue to write in to us about any of our staff who has provided
you with excellent service, who has delivered happiness to you,
or who has gone beyond his/her call of duty to render assistance
to you. This would certainly encourage our staff to provide even
better service to you.

Christmas Light-Up
This year, in conjunction with the Chairman’s Cup, we will hold
a Christmas Light-Up in the Club. Come and join us as we
usher in the Christmas Season and the Magic of Christmas!
Christmas Golf
Christmas Golf this year will be held on 20 December 2014.
Come prepared to have some Yuletide fun on the golf course
with your golfing mates. And, by all means, dress up like
Santa or his elves!
Countdown Party 2014
This year’s Countdown Party will be held on 31 December
2014 in the Banquet Hall. We have already started discussions
with the Event Company to bring you yet another fun-filled,
boisterous and exciting Dinner and Dance to usher in the New
Year. The theme this year is “Rock and Gold”. As the theme
suggests, you are encouraged to come dressed in either
Gold, or in your favourite Rock & Roll togs, or just come in
Gold Rock & Roll clothes! The main thing is to come and have
fun with your friends and family, and together, to usher in the
New Year! Do keep a look out for the advertisement posters
around the Club House and in our various publications. Sign
up for an entire table and get a huge discount off the usual
price of the tickets. Don’t wait – call the Social Department at

Conclusion
It leaves me now to thank all of you, the members, for making
the events that we had organised so memorable. Thank you
so much for your support, and I look forward to more of your
support for our future events.
Let me wish everyone a Selamat Hari Raya Haji, a Happy
Deepavali, and a Merry Christmas! I hope you all have a
wonderful and enjoyable festive season ahead!

Dear Sembawangrians,
We just had a successful Annual General Meeting on 11
September 2014. It has been a great privilege for me to
serve the Club and members over the past few years.
I will continue to do so with my committee for the next
term. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome
on-board LTC Ong Chew Meng, Vice Club Captain, and
Competitions Convenor, Mr Yong Shao Chang. My heartfelt appreciation to ME7 Lim Hoon Min and MAJ Dickson
Tay for the dedicated service to the Club and the Green
Committee. Both of them will not be continuing their term
as Vice Club Captain and Competitions Convenor.
I have reported during the AGM the work of the GC and I
think it is useful to recap them here.
Improving our Golf Course
We have paid close attention to the course maintenance
in an effort to enhance your golfing experience. We have
taken a further step to dispatch our water and soil for
analysis for better understanding of the health of our
greens. Appropriate cultural practices, such as periodic
hollow-coring, pencil/needle tinning, fertilising, spiking,
rolling, closing 1 fairway per 9, periodic trimming of the
plants and right pitch mark repair technique were put in
place this year to maintain our course better. We have also
actively sought out and learnt from other clubs the best
course maintenance practices and these cross-sharing
of experience have been valuable.
We have made several improvements to our golf course.
Namely;
Hole 12
In the area between Hole 12 and 13, we have re-turfed
the soggy/waterlogged areas, and planted additional
trees to enhance the safety of players in the tee box of
Hole 12, against the pulled drive from Hole 13.
Hole 7
On Hole 7, the bushes behind the putting green have
been replaced by Zoysia grass, and the cart path has
been widened to provide for an easier drive, and a
smooth traffic flow.

Hole 11
On Hole 11, the railway sleepers have been enhanced
with two planks running down the track to provide for a
smoother drive into the fairway.
Hole 16/17
We have planted a few Palm and Tembusu trees along
the fairway of Hole 16 and Hole 17 tee boxes to provide
the additional shield for the wayward shot landing onto
Hole 17 tee box from Hole 16, while improving the aesthetics of the course with these trees.
Hole 18
Two Palm Lillies have been planted near the Black tee
box of Hole 18, to provide just that little bit more shade
for golfers waiting to tee off on our signature final hole. It
also serves as a good photo point for all.
Inclusive Golf for Golfers of All Standards
This year, we have seen a more cohesive Inter-Club
League team. SCC participated in the Singapore Senior
League (SSL) and this event is held monthly over a period
of nine months. The GC will be conducting a review if
the club will continue to participate in the SSL along with
other clubs in Singapore.
It gives me great pleasure to mention that our SCC and
Ladies Open held on 13th October 2013 was a resounding success with maximum attendance and good
sponsorships.
This year, we will be hosting, for the first time since we reopened our new course, a major SGA-sanctioned event
– the Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship
(SOSAC) in October 2014. We are utilising this event to
ensure that our course markings are on par with national
standards since professional referees will be here to survey the course before the event.
This year, we started the Captains’ Game (Ladies vs Men)
Captain’s Column
and the event was well received by members. This event
was initiated to better integrate our ladies members with
the men. The Ladies Subcommittee inaugurated the
Ladies Cohesion Game and two events have been
organised thus far. We have since seen several new
ladies members, which is a welcoming sign. The Ladies
Captain, Emily Lee, has worked tirelessly to bring the
SCC ladies closer together and her efforts, together with
her team, are commendable. Kindly continue to give her
team your support.
The GC also organised the Staff/Committee Cohesion
Game and it was a good event for all the staff to come
together, have fun and get to know each other better.
Together, we are able to serve the members better.
We have reviewed our Monthly Medals several times and
finally decided to provide some makan kecil after the
event. Since the unveiling of the improvements in
February 2014, we have seen near-full participation rates
for our Monthly Medals.
Providing a Diverse Golfing Experience - Spreading
Our Wings
In an effort to provide our members with a wider variety/
selection of golf courses to play in, we have established
reciprocal arrangements with almost all the clubs in
Singapore. The most recent addition to the list is
Marina Bay Golf Club (MBGC). Our members will be able
to play in MBGC on a quarterly basis with just payment
of buggy fees. The first of such arrangement started on
16 S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4 . B a s e d o n f e e d b a c k , s u c h
reciprocal arrangements are most welcomed by
members. As a SCC member, we not only get to play
in nine other clubs in Singapore but also many overseas
courses as well.
Enhancing Golfing Experience
We started the balloting system for the booking of
reciprocal club instead of queuing up on Saturday
morning. To reduce staff effort and ease members
booking, we have also reduced course booking to one
day, which is every Thursday at 5.00pm. New scorecards
and flag sticks were launched. To better recognise guests
and visitors on the golf course, we now have yellow flags
on their buggies to identify them. This allows our
marshals to ensure better golfing experience and
etiquette.
We encourage our members to submit their scorecards
after each game to ensure fair and accurate handicap
maintenance. We track members with Excessive P Score
(did not submit six scorecards out of 20 rounds) and
reminded them to do so. An education and information
package was also launched for our members to inform
them of basic golf rules, good golfing etiquette,
dangerous play and potential watch areas on our course.
The Golf By-Law was reviewed this year and it was an
effort putting them together. The SOP for the Disciplinary
Committee was also reviewed and the Committee/Management now has an updated document to work with.
Strengthening Communications
For communications, we have sent seven GC updates to
members, in addition to the quarterly Captain’s Column.
Notices were put up for course maintenance, golfing etiquette, lightning risk, major works on the golf course
and other useful information for the members. We
conducted one golf forum for members this year. Many
of the GC members also take the initiative to engage the
members to listen to their feedbacks and suggestions.
Based on the number of “yellow forms” we received, we
think we are doing well in engaging the members. We will
continue to do so. Key Focus Areas for the Next Term
The GC, together with the golfing staff, will focus on three
main areas this term: Enhancing Course Maintenance
Knowledge, Strengthening Communications with
Members and Strengthening Cohesion between
Committee and Staff. We believe these focus areas will
bring together a better golfing experience and a better
Club for all.

Ladies League Team
2013-14
The SGA Inter-Club League spanned six months from
March to September 2014 and we’re into our second year of participation.
Our team of 12 ladies had spent countless hours of training in preparation for the
stiff competition. The “A” Division ladies had to face the national junior squad
players whilst the “B” Division players were equally challenged by the opponents
from the 12 other clubs. Great sacrifices were made, such as taking leaves from
work to train, and re-adjusting family or personal schedules for competition on
Sundays were truly remarkable and commendable. We may not have been the
strongest amongst all the 13 league teams but the passion, dedication and fighting
spirit displayed by the team is already a glorious triumph.

Singapore Senior League (SSL) 2014

This year saw the forming of a league to cater to the senior golfers from the various clubs
in Singapore. The players were categorised into three groups depending on their age.
The groups were: A Division - 55 to 60 yrs old, B Division - 61 to 65 yrs old and
C Division - 66 yrs old and above.
The league was played over eight legs at various courses throughout Singapore. The
format of play was Stableford and it took the best two scores from each age group
division to make up the team score for the leg played.
Seven of eight legs were completed; the fifth leg at Jurong Country Club was abandoned
due to inclement weather. The other legs which were played at Keppel, Raffles,
Sembawang, Sentosa, Seletar, Changi and SICC were played without a hitch.
The aim of the SSL was to foster closer ties among the senior golfers around the island.
After each leg played, there were presentations that varied from investment to physical
well being. After the games, meals were provided and prizes were given to winners from
each division for each leg.
Throughout the SSL season, players from Team Sembawang featured in the winners
circle for the various division. Team Sembawang came up against stiff competition from
Seletar Golf Club. From the third leg onwards, Seletar took a slim lead over Team
Sembawang and they maintained that lead till the last leg, and ended as the overall
winners of the Inaugural SSL 2014. Team Sembawang played well and finished as
creditable runners-up.
Well done to those of you who played and represented Team Sembawang in this
inaugural SSL. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

10 August 2014
On 10 August 2014, we were hosts
to Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara to a
friendly game with us at our golf course!
It was quite a sight to see a mixture of
green and red on the golf course, as
KRTU members wore green, while SCC
members wore red!
Though the game was met with a
downpour, the spirits of the golfers
were definitely not dampened as the
camaraderie continued with drinks and
karaoke singing at our newly renovated

Pitches That Drop And Stop
Control the loft with one hand

The simplest way to hit a high pitch shot that lands
softly is to focus on your left hand. Keep the
knuckles of that hand pointing to the sky as you
swing through impact (right). Or you can think
about keeping the logo on the back of your glove
facing up. Either way, the clubface will be open, so
it can slide under the ball and propel it upward.
Now, say you need a pitch shot that runs instead
of stops. Simple: Turn the knuckles of your left
hand to the ground through impact. That closes
the clubface, and produces a lower, stronger shot.
OK, go make the putt.
DON'T DITCH THE PITCH
The most common pitching fault is making too long a
backswing so you have to ease off at impact to avoid
hitting it too far. Problem is, when you hit the brakes
like this, the club keeps going and flips forward (left),
producing a weak strike or mis-hit. Instead, make a
shorter backswing and accelerate through the ball.
Even on the softest little pitch, you want to be able to
swing through. Tailor your backswing so you can do
that without fear of going over the green.
BEATING THE BURIED LIE
Here's a good rule on greenside lies: The more the ball
is sitting down in the grass, the steeper you need to hit
down on it. That's because you want to trap as little
grass as possible between the clubface and the ball. If
you make a sweeping swing, you're going to plow
through a bunch of grass before you get to impact. That
sweeping motion can work great when the ball is
perched up, but when it's down deep, give it more of a
chop.

Turn your shoulders all the way through

At the Memorial Tournament last year I saw
Nick Faldo give this tip to the governor of Ohio,
John Kasich, who was struggling to get the ball
out of the bunker. He would swing off his back
foot and flail at the ball with his arms. He had
very little body rotation and kept hitting too far
behind the ball. Nick told him to get into his
setup but without a club. He then had him
cross his arms, putting his right hand on his left
shoulder and his left hand on his right shoulder.
From there, he told Kasich to turn his shoulders
away from the target and then toward it. The
idea was to keep rehearsing this turn back and
through until he could feel it in his swing.
What Nick was getting the governor to do is
use his shoulders to drive the motion. The
arms follow this pivot, swinging low and left of
the target. If you incorporate the feeling of this
drill, you'll continue your shoulder turn through
impact and avoid leaving the ball in the bunker.
ELEMENTARY WATSON!
What do you do when your ball is buried in the sand and the pin is fairly close?
Lee Trevino taught me this shot. Weaken your grip, open the face of your
wedge, play the ball forward of center with your weight on the front foot, and
swing steeply into the sand right behind the ball. You have to swing hard to
generate enough speed to produce a soft shot that stops quickly on the green.

even grandparents! The Clubhouse was a buzz of excitement and we were happy to see

booths! We definitely look forward to the next Family Carnival and hope you do too!

We are proud to announce that we have revamped our Members Lounge!
The Members Lounge Opening Ceremony was dovetailed with the President’s Cup on 16 August 2014
and was officiated by the Club President for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Here are the new changes:
The seating capacity has been increased with the introduction of new lounge chairs and tables;
The partition in Room 2 was removed to create a bigger and more spacious lounge;
The KTV system has been upgraded.
We hope to see you drop by for a drink and a song with your families and friends!
