LETTER FROM THE CHIEFS The UCSF Department of Anesthesia welcomes you to the 54th Annual Western Anesthesia Residents’ Conference. We are excited to have you join us in the city, which held the first WARC in 1963. Anesthesia residents Drs. Giles Merkel and Morley Singer organized the first conference at UCSF as a symposium for anesthesia residents to present original research and interesting case reports and to stimulate and be stimulated by their peers. We hope this year’s conference will meet those same goals. WARC 2016 would not be possible without the help of countless individuals. We would like to specifically thank the following people for their support: Dr. Michael Gropper, our department chair for his unwavering support; Dr. Edmond Eger, our distinguished advisor who has guided the WARC conference from its very first conference in 1963 through today; Drs. Manny Pardo, Kristina Sullivan and Mark Rollins for their leadership and assistance with planning this event; Melissa Patrick, our assistant director of education, for always keeping us on track; and the other members of the WARC organizing committee. We are delighted to have you join us at WARC 2016, and we hope you have a wonderful conference this year. Held annually, the conferences showcase academic achievements and discoveries intended to advance the education and practice of anesthesia. 2017 Oregon Health & Science University 2018 University of California, San Diego 2019 University of Colorado 2020 Stanford University 6 WARC 2016 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Welcome Welcome to the 54th annual Western Anesthesia Residents’ Conference (WARC). UCSF is particularly proud to host this year’s meeting, as WARC was established in 1963 by our own Ted Eger, who remains an active emeritus professor at UCSF and has been closely involved with the planning. We are also excited to share our beautiful city with the other WARC programs, and I know that our residents will prove engaging hosts for their colleagues across the West. I have the opportunity to attend many conferences throughout the year, but the WARC remains my favorite, as it reminds me of the bright future of our specialty. I particularly want to thank our chief resi- dents, Tina Dong and Jeremy Pearl, for guiding our preparations, in addition to Melissa Patrick, assistant director for education, for keeping us on track. I hope you enjoy your time in San Francisco, and I look forward to to a great weekend of science and socializing. Michael Gropper, MD, PhD Professor and Chair Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care University of California, San Francisco WARC 2016 7 perspectives A History of the Western Anesthesia Residents’ Conference By Tina Dong, MD Dr. William K. Hamilton organized the first anesthesia residents’ conference in the Midwestern United States in 1961. This meeting proposed to provide a forum for residents in which they would not be overshadowed by the “authorities” who conducted national meetings, such as the ASA. These residents’ meetings also would serve as an opportunity for residents to compare notes, to stimulate and be stimulated by their peers, and to learn about differences in approaches to teaching and research. The success of this initial meeting and the new development of academic anesthesia departments in the western United States led to its imitation on the West Coast. In 1963, residents 8 WARC 2016 Giles Merkel and Morley Singer, guided by Drs. Stuart Cullen and Edmond Eger, organized the first West Coast Anesthesia Residents’ Research Conference, a mouthful that persisted until the 13th conference. The current name, adopted in 1981, recognized that the participants were not limited to those living at the edge of the continent. For several years, WARC was held in the Bay Area because of its central location and the earlier development of strong academic programs in that location. The first and third meetings were held in San Francisco at UCSF with the second conference held at Stanford. As the variety and number of participants increased, it was felt that diversifying the host institutions would better serve the resident participants. Part of the benefit of the conference to the residents was learning how to arrange and run a meeting. Clearly, that benefit was limited if only programs in the San Francisco Bay Area organized the conference. Since this was to be a residents’ conference, residents assumed responsibility for its organization and conduct. Residents raised the funds needed to support the conference and made all local arrangements. They invited papers, composed and ran the program. The residents presented all the papers and moderated the programs. Faculty were encouraged to contribute but were (and sometimes still are) admonished not to speak until all residents who desired to speak had been heard. Five conferences organized and conducted by anesthesia residents presently exist in the US: the Midwest Conference (1961), the Western Conference (1963), the Gulf Atlantic Conference (1974), the New England Conference (2006), and the Mid-Atlantic Conference (2014). One might ask why these conferences have flourished. In part, the answer lies in the focus of the meeting. No other conference serves the residents and fellows in so many ways. WARC 2016 9 5th Annual Eger Lecturer George A. Gregory, MD Professor Emeritus, Anesthesia/Pediatrics University of California, San Francisco Saturday, April 30 12:30 PM Dr. George A. Gregory was born in Colorado and attended medical school at UCSF. After an internship at Los Angeles County Hospital, he was first a surgery resident and then an anesthesia resident at UCSF. Following a research fellowship with Dr. Edmond Eger, he joined UCSF’s anesthesia faculty and was assigned to work for one year in the newly developing neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). He actually worked there for more than 40 years. While there he developed methods for treating the often-fatal hyaline membrane disease, including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and other forms of respiratory support. He, along with others, developed new methods for monitoring sick infants and demonstrated the utility and safety of these methods. Dr. Scott Robinson and he demonstrated that anesthesia could be safely provided for premature infants using opioids, which improved treatment and outcomes throughout the world. Previously these infants received little or no anesthesia for surgery due to the erroneous belief that they did not feel pain. 10 WARC 2016 Following retirement (and for the previous 20 years) he has provided anesthesia for surgical repair of congenital anomalies and the aftermath of burns in developing countries with a group called ReSurge International (formerly known as Interplast). He has been the chief of anesthesia for this group for the past 10 years. A large part of his work in these countries is providing education. Anesthesia providers there are very hungry for further knowledge. The goal of ReSurge (and others) is to provide the education needed to allow local surgeons, anesthesia providers, and nurses to provide the care required rather than send American and other teams there to do the surgery. This approach has been very successful in at least 15 countries. Dr. Gregory is also determining the outcomes of the surgery provided by NGOs in these countries to see if outcomes can be improved. KeyNote Speaker Jesse Levinson Co-Founder, CTO Zoox Saturday, April 30 7:15 PM Jesse Levinson is the co-founder and CTO of Zoox, a venturebacked startup seeking to redefine transportation by creating ground-up, fully autonomous vehicles for point-to-point mobility in cities. Jesse is responsible for overseeing the company’s software, artificial intelligence, computing, and sensing platforms. Prior to Zoox, Jesse graduated summa cum laude from Princeton and then com- pleted a computer science Ph.D. and postdoc under Sebastian Thrun at Stanford. There, he developed algorithms for Stanford’s winning entry in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, and went on to lead the self-driving car team’s research efforts. Jesse also cocreated a popular mobile photography app, Pro HDR, that has been purchased by more than a million people.
