Chair, Board of Directors
Rob Panepinto
Dear Friends of the Zoo,
It’s hard to believe another year has gone by. When I look back at how the Zoo has grown and what
we’ve achieved this year, I couldn’t be more appreciative of our community and the support we
have received throughout the last year. I am extremely proud of our Board of Directors. We have
illustrated that when we work as a team we can accomplish great things.
Last year’s accomplishments were many. Our greatest accomplishment was the completion and
opening of the new North American River Otter Exhibit sponsored by Sean and Nina Barth. With Sean and
Nina’s help and with the help of many other donors and community supporters, we were able to bring
this state-of-the art exhibit to the Zoo. The addition of this new exhibit has moved the Zoo in a new direction and has
given us the momentum we need to continue to improve the Zoo. Also in 2012 we held a successful fundraising event
featuring Jack Hanna as our guest speaker. We raised over $40,000 to bring an Indian rhinoceros to the Zoo which
resulted in the opening of the FAIRWINDS Credit Union Indian Rhinoceros exhibit that opened on March 15 of this year.
As we look forward it is natural for us to take stock of our accomplishments and set meaningful goals for the future. We
need to assess where we are, where we are going, and how do we get there. In the last year we have re-energized our
Board to stretch the limits of their ability to nurture those in the community to become supporters of the Zoo. In this task
they have excelled and with their continued focus on our goals we will move forward into 2013 and beyond.
Without the help of the Zoo staff none of this would have been possible. The Board of Directors would also like to thank
the dedicated staff for their commitment to moving the Zoo forward and for always remembering, as a Zoo, we are here to
enhance the quality of life for all who live in Central Florida.
We look forward to another successful year at the Zoo.
Warmest regards,
Rob Panepinto, Chair, Board of Directors
CEO
Joe Montisano
Dear Zoo Family,
What an incredible year it’s been at the Zoo. Last year we welcomed more than 250,000 guests of all ages. As many
of you who visited us this past year can attest, we were busy. More guests at the Zoo means more people are
connecting with wildlife and making a difference for conservation.
To provide the best experience for our guests, we have been working tirelessly to expand and enhance our programs,
create spectacular new exhibits including the North American River Otter Exhibit by Sean and Nina Barth, and
discovering new ways to engage our guests and provide memorable experiences. Through the many positive
comments we hear on grounds and the feedback we have received, you have told us we are hitting the mark! We
have a growing audience who loves the Zoo and values the work we do on behalf of animals and the environment.
As our audience continues to grow, so does the potential for our Zoo to impact the way people think about animals and
the environment, as well as their own role in protecting the natural world. I look forward to the coming year and the
continuing expansion of our Zoo, such as the recent opening of the FAIRWINDS Credit Union Indian Rhinoceros
exhibit and the purchase of the land adjacent to the Zoo for an African safari park. As we move forward we will stay
focused on the role our Zoo will play in inspiring conservation action locally and globally.
Best wishes,
Joe Montisano

Operations
The past year was one of many accomplishments,
large and small, that will benefit the visitors,
staff, and animals of the Central Florida Zoo.
Our reputation as a vibrant and engaging
facility to host parties and meetings
continues to spread throughout our
community. To better serve this growing
need, multiple electrical and lighting
infrastructure projects were completed
that will facilitate additional opportunities
to expand our ability to host special
events both during and after hours.
We certainly wish that all our guests take the
time to immerse themselves in a traditional
lowland, hardwood wilderness experience
along our Florida Trek Nature Walk. To encourage enjoyment of
this magnificent habitat within the Zoo’s footprint we added prehistoric artwork by locally renowned artist,
Rick Cannizzaro. Rick will lead tours of his colorful creations the first Sunday of each month.
Supporters of the Central Florida Zoo are well aware that we are home to one of the largest and most diverse reptile
and amphibian collections of any AZA accredited zoo in the state. To generate continued growth of this outstanding
collection, more quarantine space was needed to accommodate our incoming arrivals. This need was fulfilled with an
additional 440 square feet of sterile, climate controlled holding space for new animals. Accreditation standards
require a three month quarantine for this animal grouping. This new area allows more than adequate spaces for both
our new residents and the staff who cares for them.
Many of our wonderful and supportive partners now have more access to our guests via new advertising televisions
that have been installed at the “Champ the Train” depot. This attraction, popular with both our children and adult
guests, hosted over 34,000 rides in 2012!
Perennial animal favorite, “Sir Gus” the camel, moved to his new quarters late last year in the Animal Adventure area.
He really enjoys his new space amongst the other popular animals and can be viewed by all our visitors from the deck
at Animal Adventure or the boardwalk adjacent to the Cheetah Exhibit. This move was necessary in order to begin
work on the Indian rhino project on the east side of the Zoo.
And the biggest news for 2012 was the grand opening of our
North American River Otter exhibit! This custom habitat
was designed specifically for the otters and marks the
largest capital exhibit improvement in our recent history.
The Central Florida Zoo thanks board member
Sean Barth and his wife Nina for their vision and leadership
to help create this exceptional habitat for these active and
charismatic animals. Most notable is that our otter exhibit,
thanks to board member and local architect, Jorge Borelli,
created ample spaces for both aquatic and terrestrial use by
our new pair of otters. The size, scope, and creativity of this
habitat demonstrates our pledge now and in the future to
craft exceptional animal exhibits that create memorable
experiences for our guests and dynamic spaces for the well
being of our animal collection.
Our Board of Directors, staff, docents, volunteers,
contractors, and partners are very proud of our progress in
2012 and highly anticipate even more excitement for the Zoo
and our visitors in 2013!

Education
The Education Department continued to expand our programming
with the addition of new summer camps, school break camps,
Cub Club series, homeschool programs, Zoo after Dark programs
and more. In 2012 the Education Department staff and
volunteers interacted with over 134,000 children and adults
through onsite programs and outreaches in the community.
Our innovative programs are not only important to spark
excitement in science and help students understand
concepts; for many it is their only opportunity to experience
the joy of visiting the Zoo at all. With school budget cuts
affecting public schools across the board we are grateful to
all those who have provided support for free or reduced-cost
programming so no child is "left inside".
With support from Wayne M. Densch Charities, Inc. we were able to continue to communicate with teachers and activity
directors of Central Florida with our Education Resource Guides, fun fact animal posters, and Zoo postcards. In addition
Wayne M. Densch Charities, Inc. has been a major partner with regard to the disadvantaged youth of our community.
Their contribution has provided free admission to tens of thousands of students over the years.
With contributions provided by Ameriprise Financial, the Zoo continues to travel to Osceola and Polk Counties with our
Invincible Invertebrates outreach expansion program. Their continued support has once again allowed 30 schools in
Osceola and Polk Counties to receive free programs during the 2012-2013 school year.
This past summer, nine children in financial need were able to attend summer camp for free because of a generous donation
from Macy’s. We would like to thank all our Partners in Education who help make our programs possible.
We strive to create programs that will enhance knowledge of the natural world. Our mission is to inspire wonder, discovery
and responsibility. Adding technology into our programs is an exciting way to engage students and Zoo guests.
Contributions provided by Enterprise Holdings Foundation and Best Buy Foundation allowed the Education Department to
purchase three laptops and 4 Ipads.
In February of 2012, the Zoo began offering a free audio tour powered by OnCell. Using mobile technology we now
provide Zoo visitors a different learning experience with audio, images and video that they can access with their cell
phones, smartphones and tablets.
The Zoo is dependent upon our wonderful volunteers. I n
2012 the accumulated number of volunteer hours was over
22,000. This extraordinary group of people helps every
department at the Zoo. Their hard work and dedication do not
go unnoticed and we are proud that so many committed
individuals have chosen the Zoo to volunteer their time.

ANIMALS
Match-maker, match-maker make me a match….Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs do just that by managing over
500 cooperative animal programs throughout the network of over 200 zoos and aquariums. Species coordinators
review genetics and demographics of a population to make sound pairing recommendations to ensure healthy and
genetically diverse populations for zoos. The Zoo participates in 37 of these programs and two Zoo staff members
provide total over-site and recommendations for two species, the clouded leopard and white-cheeked turaco.
CONSERVATION
The CFZ continues to support conservation work right in our own backyard. Staff assisted the Florida Fish & Wildlife
Conservation Commission by surveying to catalog information on diseases in our native amphibian populations.
Education programs conducted by the Zoo raised funds to support international and local conservation projects such as
SaveNature.Org – Rainforest Center for Ecosystem Survival, Gopher Tortoise Council and City Bats Conservancy.
VET CARE
It takes a team to care for our animals. The Zoological Medicine Service of the University of Florida, College of
Veterinary Medicine assists Zoo staff in providing outstanding care for our animal collection. During their bi-weekly
trips to the Zoo the veterinarians and vet residents managed over 350 individual animal visits via hands-on exams,
visual exams, follow up visits and case reviews with our animal management staff.
MENTORING THE NEXT GENERATION
The Zoo continues our partnership with Seminole High School’s Allied Health Academy magnet program. These
students work along side our keeper, commissary and veterinary staff to observe first hand the responsibilities and day
to day activities required to insure our animal collection receives the best care possible.
Providing students the opportunity to explore the world of zoo keeping is a rewarding experience for all involved.
While our staff is able to share their knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm, students and interns gain hands on
experience that will assist them in advancing in the zoo profession. In 2012 our internship program provided 4,864
hours of experience to 19 interns.
Internships give keepers a leg up. Zoo employees Rachael Peck, Nicole
Geffner, Michele Schoebeck, Shannon McDonald and Ethan Anderson were
all hired through our internship program.
6
ANIMAL PROGRAM
The Zoo has a total of 604 animals on-site and a total of 14 animals on loan to other zoos. There are 193 species or

Significant additions in 2012: Jungle carpet python, Baron’s tree
racer, llama, alpaca, bushmaster, New Caledonian bumpy gecko and
North American river otter.
Significant hatching: Six Grand Cayman blue rock iguanas were
the first ever hatched at the Zoo. The Zoo is one of two zoos to
have successfully bred this species this year and we produced 6 of
the 12 young iguanas! This reproduction was very significant in
adding new genes to the rock iguana genetic pool.
Significant deaths in 2012: We were sad to say goodbye
to Clarissa, our 18-year-old female llama who was born at
the Zoo. She was a popular feature in Animal Adventure
and enjoyed delighting children and participating in local
parades.

Communications & Community Resources Department
2012 was an exceptional year for the CCR department. The team helped to create awareness through 923
media mentions with much of the focus going to clouded leopards, Clarissa’s (our llama) passing, the
purchase of the adjacent land by the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners, the
opening of the North American River Otter exhibit sponsored by Sean and Nina Barth and we were even
highlighted in the Wall Street Journal thanks to Stan Van Gundy joining our board! With our community
marketing outreach we participated in 56 Central Florida community events; worked with stations on 23
planned television segments; hosted 8 VIP tours; and participated in 23 other events which include the
Institute of Healthcare Improvement excursions; Enviropals which continues to grow its viewership
worldwide; Harcourt Publishing and more. We also post to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Flickr
and other social media and blog sites. The direct total reach of these outreach events is over 152,000.
Thirteen of the viewing opportunities are unlimited in their reach as they are replayed multiple times
throughout the year. In addition, the CCR team produced monthly promotions in conjunction with the
United Nations International Year of the Bat and Bat Conservation International. Besides all that, we
radically changed the Zoo’s web site in Spring 2012, all while transitioning our donor/membership database
from a spreadsheet to an interactive online management and processing system. Memberships are up 3%
from last year. With this new system we will be able to steward our members and donors much easier and
with greater emphasis than before; in addition, reporting for the board will be easier and more consistent
than in past years. The communications team is also actively approaching new sponsors and donors and is
active in many civic and leadership organizations throughout Central Florida to identify new and potential
donors. Of this interaction we have received donations from organizations such as Industrial Lighting
Products, Real Radio 104, Lego Duplo “read! play! build! teams, How to Do Florida, and NC State Alumni
Association to name a few. In addition, we partnered to promote programs and events with FAIRWINDS
Credit Union, Fox 35, Magic 107.7, Orlando Sanford International Airport, Sanford River Rats, Crappie
Masters, Blue Spring Manatee Festival, Oviedo Chicks, and many more. Staff researched over 160
potential grant funders. We submitted 17 grant proposals, received 9 including the State of Florida
Division of Cultural Affairs and we have 2 that are pending from 2012.
The CCR team markets all events that the Zoo hosts for our guests each year, however, the team was
integral to the production of several events this year including:
Black Tie on the Wild Side 2012 – with the help of the board, we secured 26 corporate tables and
hosted over 300 guests. The team has been working throughout the latter part of 2012 to produce
official marketing pieces with evok Advertising for the 2013 event.
We also hosted the North American River Otter opening, a 3 day event filled with a donor party,
a media event and grand opening.
ZOOloween 2012 – the second year for this scary event! Utilizing new methods of engagement we
sold over 550 tickets (mostly the week of the event); handled all pre- and post-event details.
Brews Around the Zoo 2012 was a huge success with over 1,000 in attendance. Thanks to our
continuing partnership with Wayne Densch Inc. we continue to produce one of the most exciting
events of this type in the area.
We are now planning Zoo events 8 months out, therefore, many of the events above we are already
working on the 2013 details.

Communications Cont.
Finally some exciting numbers:
We advertised in 40 media venues including regulars like
Orlando Family, Lake Mary Life, Sanford Herald,
Daytona Beach News Journal and Orlando Sentinel, as
well as UCF Futures, Southern Living, and many more.
In addition to our paid media the Zoo also received a large
part of our advertising reach through unpaid earned media
coverage. In 2012 we were the recipient of 49 news
articles in local media with an earned value of $141,815
with a reach of 585,000 individuals per day. We also had
event listings, smaller articles and post-event notices in 26
venues with an earned value of $80,463 and a reach of
346,406 per day.
We were featured on five local television stations with an
earned value of $42,000 with a combined reach of over
650,000 viewers. Our partnership with the manatee
festival nets the Zoo approximately $82,000 in earned
value with their television advertisements on Channel 13
and Orlando Sentinel spaeda.
The impact of social media and the Internet are the areas
of our largest impact. We appeared on 343 websites and
blogs with an earned value of between $783,000 $6,264,000 with over 1,566,000 views/impressions. The
discrepancy in value is in the value of a click on any
particular website, which ranges from .50 cents up to $80
per click, depending on the traffic to the site. Even at the
lower end, the value is tremendous to the Zoo.
We have approximately 7,600 Facebook “followers/
friends” and in 2012 they shared information from our
Facebook page to 44,200 individuals which ultimately
shared information to 951,600 people with an earned
value of $1,018,212. We had 5,926 followers on Twitter
with an earned value of $166,742 and 46 YouTube videos
added with a value of $5,500 with 16,807 views.
