I
n this booklet we have attempted to list all the various
activities and events students were involved in last year.
It shows all their various successes.
It is inevitable that some students may have been missed out
and I apologise profusely for this. They have had an opportunity to check it, but I know some won’t have remembered to
do so!
Please note that this book will also be available to view and
download and save from the school website, particularly if you
want to print off any pages with photos on.
My sincere thanks to my secretary, Karen Ling, who has collated all this information and produced the booklet.
Most importantly of all, thank you to all students for doing so
well and thank you to all staff and parents for supporting the
children and helping them with their achievements!
Happy reading!

Miles’s New Wheelchair Appeal
Autumn Term 2014
Miles Alder is a wonderful student who was in Year 9 in 2014/15. He has
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is a degenerative illness and can be
tough for Miles at times. There is no cure. He has the most fabulous and
positive attitude and is a wonderfully cheerful presence around the school.
At the age of 10 he started to use a wheelchair .
The school began a fundraising campaign from the end of September 2014
to raise funds to help Miles to buy a new chair. A new chair would cost
£20,465. Miles’s family raised some money already with two charities and
raised £3,700 and found a charity that will pay for the upkeep of the
chair once it was purchased, but this left £16,765 to be raised.
The students wholeheartedly embraced this campaign and many events
took place in school including a non-uniform day, bake-offs, a sponsored
indoor rowing event and raising money through our Centenary Evening and
Super Rock.
£18,000 was raised by Christmas and Miles received his new wheelchair in
the middle of January 2015. Both Miles and his family were delighted and
the students had enjoyed themselves raising money for a good cause in a
short space of time. Well done!

Farlingaye High School’s
Centenary Event
21st October 2014
This was the most wonderful evening of individual and group performances to reflect
on events linked to war over the last 100 years. Thanks go to the students who
volunteered their time to prepare and perform willingly and to the various staff who supported it. We
were completely full. There were a variety of musical performances, from the various choirs singing, students singing pieces on their own and various instrumental pieces relayed, as well as poignant pieces of
text, or poems read aloud by students, and expressive dance and ballet renditions alongside drama pieces
too. Over £1200 for Miles’s Wheelchair Fund was raised from this event.

Art
Artist in Residence—Alfie Carpenter
Artist, Alfie Carpenter, spent a day in school with students creating mixed media landscapes
with unusual materials and expressive starting points. Students explored emotional connections with the landscape and how to explore this through paint and colour. Students in Years
12 and 13 art groups were involved alongside students from Years 7 and 9.
Year 8 Display for the Woolverstone Wing, Ipswich Hospital
In the Autumn, Year 8 students created an art display for Ipswich Hospital. The students
designed mixed media poppies looking at symbolism and reflections for the WW1 Centenary.
Some lovely comments were received from both hospital staff and visitors in response to the
work.
Doves for Ipswich Hospital
Over the Christmas period, students and members of the community, created doves using designs and materials of their choice. On the back of each dove was a personal wish for the future. These were displayed in the Woolverstone Wing at Ipswich hospital and provided a
cheerful decorative addition to the corridor, which has been appreciated by patients, hospital
staff and visitors.
St Elizabeth Hospice
Some students volunteered to go to the hospice and create some artwork for it and those that
did were a credit to the school. The hospice team were delighted with the positivity and creativity of our students and how fantastic they were with the members of their Art group.
There was such a lovely buzz of activity and everyone got involved with creating their pieces —
including some of the hospice staff!
Students involved were: Zoe Adlam, Maddy Allen, Kathleen Lewis, Abigail Radial, Hannah
Coles, Vicky Long, India Parkinson, Jamila Robson, Della Stiff, HannahTaplin, Livia Garrod and
Angus Hardy.
On the 24th of June students were invited to sing at St Elizabeth Hospice in a community performance as the culmination of a collaborative Arts project. The Boys Vocal Choir performed
beautifully along with the Senior Choir to an audience of patients and hospice staff. They
joined with members of the hospice team, patients and parents to sing a rendition of ‘You Raise
Me Up’. Patients in the wards opened their windows to let the music in, and some came out to
join in and sing. The hospice was presented with Artwork in the form of large scale figures of
dancers which students from Farlingaye produced with the Hospice art group, and a series of
canvases based on landscapes.

Riverside Plaque Project
On Tuesday 30th June, visiting artists Roger Hardy and Emma Robertson worked with students in
Years 12, 10 and 9 to create a ceramic plaque for the Riverside Theatre in Woodbridge, Students
worked together to create separate pieces of a 107cm diameter ceramic work incorporating a
range of textures and sculptural clay techniques. The plaque will be fired, glazed and mounted onto
the front of the theatre building as part of their centenary celebrations. Students who took part in
the day were:
Miranda Simmonds, Ella Hall, Lucy Collins-Ward, Sophie Lawns, Karyna Mizyuk, Marshall Sykes, Emelia Garvie, Elizabeth Brisbane, Tom Fletcher, Barty Thomas, Helena Houston, Ellena Sneath, James
Catling, Ethan Dixon, Jasmine Gedney, Hannah Coles, Elena Stuhler and Millie Ewings.
On Saturday 26th September 2015 the Riverside Theatre held an unveiling ceremony for the plaque
which was attended by the Mayor of Woodbridge and Deben Decorative Fine Arts Society amongst
others. The Mayor said the plaque was a boost for Woodbridge.
Riverside Logo Competition
Students were also asked to design a logo, so the Art Department ran a competition for this. These
students worked in school with local artist, Roger Hardy, to combine their ideas to create a professional logo design for the Theatre to use. Roger Hardy is a successful sculptor and painter who has
also created logo designs for clients such as ‘Walls’ and ‘Formula Oned’. Students across year groups
submitted ideas and the winners were:
Livvy Sutcliffe, Andrea Hammersley, Katya Bathgate, Betty Freeland and Emilie-Jane
Osborne.
Most-Able Day
Students in Years 8, 9, 12 and 13 took part in a day working with concepts about bringing the outside
inside to create collaborative artworks. Students worked in teams to design landscapes based on
their own drawings and research. They worked with textile techniques and mixed media layering to
fill large canvases with images of beaches, mountains, forests and fields. These artworks will be
installed in the St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich in the main foyer. Students commented on the day
‘It was a great day!’ and ‘It was fun to do a variety of things especially for a good cause’.
School Art Visitors
Sadie Coles came to the school to talk about her experience in the contemporary Art world
and spoke of how she built up her own business from scratch, owns 3 contemporary large art spaces,
organises the Frieze International Art Fair and also has links with Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons. She
spoke of ways to work in the art world and the best route to becoming a professional artist.
Christine McKechine and Sue Cranwell and Madeleine Nightingale also came to the school to offer
classes after school with regards to collage pictures and a fabric dyeing workshop.

Young Carers
The FHS Young Carers Group, with over 70 students,
meet regularly to offer each other support and to
share a lunch. They meet experts from outside school
including the Autism Society, the school nurse to discuss medicines, and have also done a lunchtime of first
aid … practising bandaging and putting each other in
the recovery position.
The students involved also have some aspect of responsibility at home, helping with chores, or spending time
with a sick or disabled relative. During the year they
have been supported by Suffolk Young Family Carers.
To mark Young Carers Week this year the students involved decided to ‘go the distance’ with activities involving painting, cycling, wearing very brightly coloured
laces on Sports Day and raising awareness of what a
young carer means. The week of activities was closed
at the end with an afternoon tea at the Strawberry
Café and the unveiling of their fantastic painting. (Copy

Go-Karting
We had 4 teams compete in the local semi-finals
at the Anglia Indoor Karting Centre. All teams
drove really well but only one team managed to
make it through to the regional final at the
Daytona Race Track in Milton Keynes. The team
consisted of 3 drivers: Fergus Glazier, Nathan
Thurlow and James Clarke. All three drivers
performed really well. James Clarke won one of
his heats. Although the team finished some way
down the order, the boys had a great day out and
represented the school really well.
Golf
Our team finished 12th nationally in the
schools team competition.
The team were:
Harry Fricker, George Fricker
and Max McGreal.
