Teachers: The purpose of this
lesson is for students to display
knowledge of a character’s physical
traits, personality traits, and choose
an appropriate quote or passage
from the novel to go with it.
This activity is internet-based,
so you must have access to
the internet and this website:
http://www.sp-studio.de/
index.htm
The website “SP-Studio” was
created by Janina Himmen and
is not affiliated with South Park
or Comedy Central.
Figure A: The home page of SP-Studio
Possible ways of use without a class set of computers or internet lab:
1. Use your projector and students take turns on the single computer.
2. If you have a SMARTBoard, you can project the website and have students take turns adding
traits to a character.
3. Have students draw their own characters similar to the ones from the website. They could trace
an outline of a figure on paper then add their own elements or use the template provided.
Teachers: Distribute the planning guide, then follow
these suggested guidelines:
1. Direct students to go to the website: http://www.sp-studio.de/
index.htm (see figure A)
2. Have them begin creating a character by clicking on one of the
elements they can add (such as “place” or “skin”).
3. Their decisions should be made based on the character from
the novel or story. You may have them select a passage,
chapter, or quote to use and cite their source, or give them free
reign.
4. If they need to delete or change an element, they can click on
it to bring up a navigation window (see figure B). The “x” deletes
the element/object, the arrows allow users to move the object.
Figure B: Click on the “X” to delete
an element/object or the arrow to
move it.
5. If they wish to add text, they should click on the “text” option.
Once they have the text as they want it (color, font, size), they
should click on the “OK.” They can move it later by clicking on
the text and using the arrow option (as shown in figures C and D
on the next page).

6. To save their final
character creation, they
should click on the icon
of the disc. It will
automatically download
the image to their
computer as “spstudio.jpg”.
7. Direct the students to
read the copyright
guidelines for usage.
They may use the
image on their personal
websites as long as
they create a link back

the artwork and upkeep
of the website is handdrawn and maintained
as a hobby and does not generate any income.
• I have created a student handout for online
directions that can be distributed or projected in the
classroom. You may add guidelines for the literature
requirements.
• I have also included a template handout students
can use if they do not have internet access.
Grading Rubric:
For these types of assignments I usually give a completion grade, based on criteria I set
beforehand. If you have specific guidelines, you should include those in your grading
rubric. Here is an example of a simple 12-point rubric:

-Personality
